The Best Thing/Worse Thing and What did I learn Today..Pt 9

Victoria Harbour, ON

Gardengirl.....congratulations..88% that's almost genius I'm sure..how wonderful for you..what's the next step in this process? Before you know it you'll be graduating...I'll have to play on that computer site but don't have zip codes...

Judy, I'm knitting the sleeves, neckband and waistband which will be used for a quilted sweater jacket...

Well the ladies have just left..they are quite the bunch..Shawnee is painting a muskoka chair back with a Schnauzer on it..she's getting $400.00 just for the painting...June is painting same pattern on hers that I painted on the weekend, Rita decided to do a 24 X 52" insert of a down east ocean scene of Martha's Cove...Pat is doing a bluejay in winter setting...and Betty..she's just shaking her head...so it makes for a long day 4:45 am and by the time I get to bed it will be nearing midnight..Greg (eldest son)has been working on boat all week after work hoping to get her into the water...tabs for the lower unit needs replacing or repair..hate to know the cost of either..oh well, we've gone to far bringing the Foxy Lady back to tip top condition..guess one more thing won't kill us...bank account is looking mighty slim...lol

Best thing..nice evening with friends!

Worse thing.....Greg just told me that his best friend Lloyd's wife is having their 2nd child..went to the doctor's yesterday for her regular testing and was told the baby had died...he wasn't sure what the process was or how many months she was...he knows it was at least 5...

What did I learn..People grieve in different ways...Shawnee (lady who was painting this evening) lost her husband last fall, they were quite well to do, mostly inheritance on her side...he watched the pennies, but since his passing, she's spending it quicker than she can get to the bank..it's her way of dealing with grief...

So dear friends, it's of to Betty byes..talk tomorrow...

Pacifica, CA

evening all,

betty what a wonderful lady painting all those soilders
no granny does not live with me she lives alone two blocks from the ocean in pacifica its about 25 minutes away she is 90 years old still has her wits about her loves to argue and make someone mad to get in a fight i guess what im trying to say as embarrasing as it is she loves drama, in 1990 she told me to pick out a house and it would be my inherantance
and be her tax shelter so in 17 years she has not done anything to the house so it needs a roof and a paint job so we have to gather a few estimates to present to her but there will be a argument behind it because she still thinks labor is still in the 1940's...lol it drives me nuts
but after she makes us feel bad then she gives in i guess its about having the upper hand
she retired two years ago being a beauty operator for 70 years she is very independant but stubborn as a mule we love her just the same

best:ordered from a competitor halloween nail polish, like a bunch of kooks were testing it and running in the bathroom with out lights to ooh and aww the glow in the dark omg

worst my reserve overflow tank sprung a leak antifreeze in the driveway have to order the part arrrrrrrrrrr

learned: i think i need to get a regular car that dont cost a whole lot of money when something goe's wrong
sorry for my spelling but im off to bed have a good evening all liz

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Such talented people - delightful!!!

Best: Got to see my granddaughter and her dh, and visit a bit (this wasn't planned so extra nice).

Worst: Too hot today.

What I learned: Having my granddaughter close by makes life a lot better!!

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

OMG betty, i finally got the chance to watch that video,,,, awesome!
Now that to me is God....
giving out of what you have and some times even what you dont have.... to me is God...
Your gift to me without a second thought, the brushes given from your friend and paid forward... that is God....
People say there is no God.....I see him every day.....
I visit him every day..... right here.......
I see him in your gifts people, the way you care, the way you support, forgive. love, make me laugh... hear me cry.....
you cant tell me thats not something very special..... sigh... i am so blessed.

I am going to pay it forward too betty!
I have a lady at work who just retired and she goes and plays bingo. Now bingo over here is a game you pay to play where basically you buy a book of numbers, a person calls them out as a machine randomly picks them, you mark them off and when your book is full you call BINGO! and you win the prize pool. Its anywhere from $30 to $10,000! depending on the game. A bingo box which i will be making and decorating is a box like a pencil box. its about 7" wide and about 10" long and has a lid that slants down. you rest your books on top as you mark it off or attach them with a clip so they dont move and keep your pens and things inside.
i am going to make and paint one for her as a gift, thus paying it forward.....
so your friends love and generosity along with yours is now going to travel australia, and i will tell her the story so that she knows, i am paying it forward.

best thing? im on holidays for 9 days as of today.
worst? for a change there wasnt one....

i am enjoying the peace and happiness i have found here, thanks

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning all...not the nicest looking day out there but it's not raining...I'm sitting here jotting down my list of 'to do's' for this weekend..another non stop weekend (lol)..girls last night told me to find myself a boyfriend...have no idea where I'd fit him in..lol..

So far, I'm on a mission .. shopping spree tonight! NEED to find a 50th birthday gift for Darlene, an anniversary gift for SIL/BIL for Monday, picking up hanging solar lights for Roger's gravesite..his birthday is Wedn. promised to pick up gift certificate at 2 different places for friends as gifts for Dar...stop over in Michael's for supplies, Curries Art Studio for frame, Home Depot for sod and Canadian Tire for 2nd chair I would like to paint on the weekend....

Tomorrow..working from home till 1:00...go into town to have photo taken for passport/
drop into car dealership/ meeting with insurance company re changes I want to make/p.u. cement for the yard art I want to make and cut the grass (now that's 2 - 3 hrs) depending if I weed whack...put the muskoka chair together and base coat back white....
surely it's bedtime by now....

Saturday...going to do Barrie yardsales as I'm looking for pieces for a country setting on back deck..50th birthday party at 2:00pm

Sunday...painting a batique watercolor picture for my living room - class 8-5pm

so, now I'll see just how much I'll accomplish now that I've put it in writting..sometimes I just have to challenge myself..

Laura..I mailed your package I believe it was Tuesday and they said it should arrive within 10 days..so here is hoping...and thanks for 'pay it forward'..I feel that I've been so lucky with the kindness and friendships and acts of love I'VE received that I must do same...and you are correct..looking around in everyday life occurences, you see "GOD"
We'll all want to see photo's of your 'Bingo' boxes...

Murmur I'm so please that you've someone who drops in or you can drop in on who is now close to where you live...little unexpected visits bring so much 'sunshine' into our lives...

Liz..nice that you still have a 'granny' with you..sure do miss mine..she was one of the nicest persons you could ever meet..I don't think I ever heard her say a negative thing about anyone, don't even think I saw her angry...sure do miss her..she always made me laugh! Remember when I had the tombstone put on Roger's grave I brought her over to show her, don't know why I think because they are elderly they don't understand..the scripture at the bottom on the tombstone said "As long as I am remembered in the hearts of those I leave behind, I will never be forgotten" so I went on to explain the meaning of this statement, she looked down at the site, up at me, and said: 'that's true, but that won't make him dance..you need someone to dance with for the rest of your life"...so cute....

Hmmm everyone running about doing their work today..busy day for them and here I am, playing on computer with you all, eating my western sandwhich..knitting away, tv on in the background...kind of feel guilty, but boss says I'm doing wonderful job, so who am I to argue...lol...hand shakes sometimes when he gives me my paycheck....

Morning All. It's a beautiful day here in central Virginia - but going to be a hot one again.

Betty, my zip is 23233 (an area called Short Pump) so you can see that on the map. As for school, this is only my first of what will probably be 15 to 17 classes to ge my Landscape Designer certificate. Since I can only take one at a time, we're looking at maybe 3 years to do it all. I'm waiting for the school to list their fall "continuing education" classes so I can sign up for the next one.

I actually learned something very interesting last night in class. Do you know how a plant leans towards the sun as if it's reaching for it? Well, this is because there is a hormone in the plant called 'auxin'. Auxin is light sensitive so when you put a plant in the window, the auxin moves to the far side of the stem (for example). Auxin is a hormone that promotes growth. It is what makes a seed germinate. Anyway, when the auxin moves to the other side, it is concentrated in the cells on the "dark side" and make those cells enlongate. Because they grow longer, the stem on that side grows a little more then the other side so the stem starts to bend making the plant appear to be reachuing for the sun. The same hormone is present in plants that have TROPISMS (growth from stimuli). This can be found in plants with tendrals like peas, clematis, etc. When the tendrals touch something, the auxin moves away from the touch, enlongating the cells on the opposite side and making the tendral turn towards the object it touched.

I just thought this stuff was so cool! Next week is the reproductive system....of plants!!!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Quite interesting..you'll be able to apply a lot of what you learn to your own garden...that should be fun....wow..that's a lot of learning...I give you credit girl to take on such a task..go for it..know you'll get good grades...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Jeannine...what 'weather channel'...not sure the site I can access to put your zip code in..will be a fun thing to do...

Chester County, PA(Zone 6b)

Very cool, gardengirl.

Have fun shopping Betty. Reading your weekend schedule tired me out. I'm off til monday after today...looking forward to getting the rest of my baby plants into the ground.

Murmur...glad GD is near to you.....stay cool. It's been really hot and sultry here most of the week but today is mid 80's and not a cloud in the sky. Gorgeous!

Be well, all....ttyl, Jan

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

It should be just www.weather.com

Victoria Harbour, ON

Thanks 'sweetie'...that might entertain me for the afternoon...lol

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

I love playing on it!!! Another one is www.terraserver.com

Chester County, PA(Zone 6b)

Betty....just a quick note...I saw "your" car a few moments ago while out to lunch. The picture you posted doesn't do the color justice....very cool!

Jan

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

I like google maps, easy to use just click on maps at google and type in the address or zip code and then click on hybrid. Can get in pretty close too!

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Acutally, these are satellite photos so you actually see houses, trees, etc. The Terra Serva one is obviously not too current cause my trees don't look that big. It's from the last 4 yrs sometime cause our shed is in our yard. :)

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

googles is up to date, cause it shows our new roof from after the hurricane

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

cool - I'll check theirs out! Thx

Victoria Harbour, ON

Jan, so funny, here we are talking about satelite and saw your words 'just saw your car' and without reading any further I'm thinking 'OMG that's amazing' lol

Jeannine..think you have to pay to join before they allow you to see it...I was on a couple of sites earlier today but when you zoom in - they say they can't give you that much clarity..will continue playing though..

Thank you everyone, you've given me something to play with this afternoon...45 min. and home I go till Monday.. you are all soooo much fun!

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

We actually looked up the stellite photos of our house before buying it, it was on the county site (I think, lol, a few years back), pretty neat

Gonna go ahead and:

Best: well this was kinda yesterday but time is relative. I think it was really neat that there are several ladies on this thread that all devote some part of their life to the same thing, whether it be painting, camping, the Grateful Dead (lol)...checking out satellite photos..lol

Worst: I just try not to have these

What I learned: Today I learned that no matter who you are or where you are from , if you move to the South, it rubs off on you. I was talking with someone that moved here from New York, (normally I'm suspicious but she's a cool person..lol) and she cracked me up so hard. I can't describe without giving private details away but we laughed!

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

For some reason, TerraServa doesn't show my address. The google satellite does though!. I looked up the Eiffel Tower on Terraserva and the pyramids - very cool! I checked out New Orleans and it is definitely after Katrina - sometime in the winter cause the trees have no leaves

Nipomo, CA(Zone 8a)

WOW! Is anyone else sweating after reading Betty's to-do list? Girl you are nothing short of amazing!

Betty, being up there in Canada, do you have See's Candy? It is the best chocolatetier (spelling?) anywhere. We can pick up gift cert. from Costco and save something like $3 a pound. It is the perfect gift! Chocolate is a one size fits all.

It is odd, some address come up so so close on TerraServa and others not so much. I typed in a friends address, and it got so close that I could see the licence plates on her truck. That is a wee bit scarey!

Best Thing Today: There are so many today.
Took dh and young son to camp, so it is just me and older son. YEAH!
Got not one but TWO boxes from the UPS guy, one a fundraiser item for PTA,(so tired of the same ones over and over again) and a box from QVC with a paint roller and trim set.
Worst Thing today: Young son went to camp. I will miss him. Not his dad, but him :(
What I learned: Balancing the PTA checkbook is a lot harder than one would think. (I am working on hour # 8 with this thing)
Hope to bop back in soon.

Well, I've just got home and thank goodness..spent my allowance and it's only Thursday..went to Canadian Tire and picked up the chair, Home Depot for 6 rolls of sod..still need 3 or 4 for the corner walkway, off to Michaels, purchased a gift for my girlfriend..they had 1/2 price little 2 wheel bikes out of metal..front carrier for plants and 2 metal saddlebag type boxes for plants as well, so will just have to shop for plants and that's her gift, oh yes, did I forget to tell you that it was the cutest thing so I said to myself 'self, I think you deserve one also' so 2 came home with me..then went to Walmart and bought SIL/BIL a nice gift..(boo hoo not me), then off to Curries art store..didn't find what I was looking for so back to Michaels and I purchased 2 balls of wood, ran out today and a large 24" x 36" frame for Sunday's project..Carol tries to sell us the frame and matts but she wanted $225.00 ... no way, I'll pay for the course and supplies but I'm not daft.. then dropped in to a decorating shop, closed my eyes tightly and purchased the gift certificate for Aline...home I came, put the sod down, brought in all the goodies and it's almost time for bed...spending money tires me...lol

Soooo, the best was finding nice gifts for friends and treating myself..I always spend $100.00 a week for a special treat for myself..someones got to do it...I'm excited with my purchases...enjoy pretty things...

Worse thing..guess it could be I overspent big time...AND, didn't look at my list and forgot the hanging solar lights for Roger's grave..so another trip to town tomorrow aft....

What did I learn today..it's only money, here today and I might be gone tomorrow, so why not enjoy it!!! Probably you ladies will agree!!!

Off for my bath..will talk to EACH and EVERY one of you in the morning or tonight if I can't sleep....

Hope you are all healthy/safe/ and enjoying the evening...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Thought I'd post the bikes..they are over 2 1/2 ft. tall..cute..can't wait for tomorrow to fill their little pots...also I forgot..the cutest little side table water fountain that house 2 candles jumped into my cart as well..oh well, guess I'll keep it..to far away to return it..aren't I bad..think you are all leading me astray! lol

how cute, my sister has this huge patio and stuff like that looks so good on it, I think if I get to go home this summer I'll have to take something like that with me. She's a wiz at crafts etc but never thinks about plants and things. She has a wonderful backyard...here's a few pictures..I could have so much fun with it LOL...btw the stunny pooch is Passionata.

Gorgeous/gorgeous..does she do 'weddings' ... what a lovely yard...

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

She had a wedding for a friend of her stepson a few weeks ago. She let them have free run of the house and such but doesn't do it other than family friends. LOL she can't cook so if she ever offers you food RUN! Can't boil water, guess it evens out since I can cook anything but couldn't even sew on a button. This is the front of the house, taken last Thanksgiving.

Victoria Harbour, ON

A mansion to say the least....can you imagine living in such a beautiful home...lucky lady!

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

I can only see the bills that go with it...lol I'd hate to pay the house payment and electric bills etc...much rather have a more modest house but she and I have different views on what we want out of life and that makes her happy. It is a beautiful house inside and out, the inside is strictly because of her work, she has your knack for things and it shows. She made all the window treatments and has covered several items to match etc. All the little touches that have given it some warmth.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Know my sister has home very similar, paid an interior decorator to come and make it a showplace..pool/cabana etc.etc. She's on her own it must get lost in it, but I always feel like I'm in a showcase home and cannot feel the warmth...she often says how country, cutsie my place is and how she feels the love and warmth that she doesn't have in hers...dah/dah big time...you can't get that with interior decorators...lol...but I'm proud that she has such a home...she breeds/trains and showcases miniature Esquimo Dogs, only thing I see out of place is the white hair...hmmmm

She did though adopt a little Inuit girld about 12 years ago..she's gorgeous..they just got back from Las Vegas..were there about 2 weeks as Nikki (niece) was doing some modelling/acting classes...

So as you say, we all have our own needs of life..mine is simple, my family, they go for the better things of life..or maybe they've got it wrong, and I have the better things of life..lol..but am sure it all works out in the wash...

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

I found this today and figured I'd post it, in case any of y'all appreciate Motown. There was another one with better sound quality, but I figured y'all might appreciate the video ;)

Going to be partying this weekend with a 3 year old, so will not be checking in often, but since I have neglected you for this past few days, I thought I should warn you that I am OK, just tied up (literally ) in grandson's b'day stuff.
You all have a great weekend, and I will be ready to post on sunday evening, I am sure....with pictures!!
Hugs,
sharon

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

lol don't know if your ready to party with the Big Dog's yet Sharon...those 3 year olds can really throw down. Hope you can keep up (I've tried but I konk out about 8 o'clock with the toddlers still going strong) and take lots and lots of pictures.

Betty I agree, as much as part of me would love to have a bigger house I'd never want one THAT big. I mean two of us in in a 6000 sq ft house? What do you need that kind of space for? I'd like half of that and I'd be happy...which is just a bit larger than what we have now, just like a better layout as I have no storage space. And since I'm a bit of a decorating freak I need space for my holiday stuff. Much rather spend my money on doing things with my DH that we both enjoy and that we could do together. *G* And heck I hate cleaning the one I have now lord knows I don't wanna double to clean.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

when you have a house like that i guess you don't worry about bills just like you don't worry about the price of gas when you buy a hummber. LOL the house is fantastic. thanks for the pictures.

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

i love a cottage home too. mine is tiny but i like to get that home kina feel to it. maybe i will post a pic for you.

Well betty i got some birthday money early yesterday and went out and bought some painting gear. 21 paints! they were on special. i got a pallette and gold relief as i like to work with that, ummm no brushes as instructed :0) some sealer, paint retarder, chalk pencils and things. I am going to start a couple of bird houses and i have a calligraphy box i am going to do. i dont do calligraphy but i really liked the box! i will be doing the bingo boxes as well. really looking forward to it! come on mr postman!!! (jumping up and down on the spot)

heres a pic of a bingo box, it has a slanted top the is hinged and opens. like a pencil box old style.

Thumbnail by The_Wonder_Downunder
Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

what is a bing box??

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

like an old fashioned pencil box except they put bingo supplies in it.

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

A bingo box which i will be making and decorating is a box like a pencil box. its about 7" wide and about 10" long and has a lid that slants down. you rest your books on top as you mark it off or attach them with a clip so they dont move and keep your pens and things inside.
playing bingo is a big thing down here. where as i think over there they mark off numbers on cards with chips and such, we have books of tickets with 15 number printed on them. each book has 15 tickets for 15 games. as the caller calls a number, you mark it off.

some people play 6, 8 books! I dont know how. all the books are printed joined in losts of 6 so if you do buy multiples you dont get repeated numbers and its easier to check. on lady tho always bought 8 books out of sequence so she had to check each book and played then upside down!! i kid you not... she was amazing.

so there you are trying to hang onto your books while marking them off. if you have a bingo box, you can keep your marking pens inside, clip the books to the front lid so they dont move while you play....

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

yes araness!!!!! exactly
