Best Thing/Worse Thing and What did you learn today? Part 8

Victoria Harbour, ON

Tangiegirl...how wonderful of you to join us..know it's difficult sometimes, you read threads and can see the friendship amongst the posters and you feel intimidated..I'm sure it's not so with all threads but here, we welcome everyone..so here's a BIG WELCOME from all...
We love to chat, some more than others..(that means me because the position I have at work gives me about 6 hrs. of play a day and so love checking in with all my friends) ...

Darius, not so...we just love you..got to watch over you because you take on much toooo much...

So now for my posting...

Best thing that happened to me today was of course 'friendship', Arthur and Lisa - they left this morning..was so much fun having them, then June and Alex dropped in..he's still not feeling well..heart giving him major problems, but, he was on an outing and lucky me, they dropped in...Anne is here for the week and she dropped in for a visit..Darlene just called and we gabbed for 1 hr....and Mom called me twice...told me she was treating me this week with $1,000.00...said I'm always working around the house and I'm to use it for 'treats'...then she called me with other news..she's been loosing her balance of late..were leaving the cottage and she went to supper herself on the floor lamp and broke a few pieces of the crown..I just finished this stained glass lamp so I'm hoping to find left over glass to repair it..that made her feel better......

Shar..missing you..know you had your tests and have a headache..do hope you will be feeling better by morning...

Worse..well, getting anxious for construction company who is doing house next door to bring in equipment to move all the rocks so I can complete my pond..but (Darius - you'd know about this) got anxious and over I went picking up large boulders..now tonight my right backside is paining like the dickens...couldn't stop at 1 or 2 or 3 rocks..had to do about 15...so I deserve it...

What did I learn today..boulders are heavy!

Remember I said I stunk/stunk of swamp..hadn't accounted for my shoes, they are work shoes and I had them on while I've been in and out all day so baths weren't working and I couldn't figure it out..mystery solved...shoes off to the garbage...

Well dear friends..I've chatted ever so much all weekend, guess it's because I've had 4 days of...now it's all your turn because it's your 'July 4th' holiday...

Enjoy the evening, and God willing I'll be with you tomorrow...

Hi everyone. Welcome to the thread Beth. How's everything going up there in OR? How are your AVs?

OK, everyone, I have some pictures to share. Since y'all are gardeners, you will hopefully appreciate what you see. My pictures are of our house 8 yrs ago this month - when we first bought it and now. We've done a lot to the house and the yard as you will see.

The first ones are from 1999 looking at the front from across the street and from the very back towards the house.

Now from the back.....

Can I just say that the first things to go when we closed were the blue shutters and the spindly crab apple tree in the back yard! The lot the house is on is a 1/2 acre which for a neighborhood around here is large so when I saw that the ladies that lived here didn't do anything to the landscaping, all I saw was a blank canvas. All my DH saw was bankruptcy court!!

Here's the front now....same view

Welcome Jan. I hope you make yourself at home here. I find it hard to keep up sometimes but I do love the wonderful people who post here. I often learn a lot.

I have to charge some batteries for my digital camera then I'll post some pics of my new jewelry. The tv show that I host is for the Moose River Broadcasting Association. The show is called 'In Focus' shown every second Sunday on the local community channel. We don't have a newspaper here, instead we have two community channels that simply post notices and advertisements and run a weekly bingo. The show I host is a current affairs show and I just introduce each segment. There's also a youth show that has segments geared toward the younger crowd and one of the high school students hosts it. It's just a volunteer thing and I have to do all of my own hair, makeup and wardrobe but it's been a really cool opportunity.

It's funny because sometimes people think that living in Moose Factory is a big hardship because it's fairly isolated but I've been able to do things here that I would never have done in the city like host a show, eat beaver, sturgeon and wild goose, have a tipi in the back yard . . .

On that note the best thing that happened today was visiting with a couple of friends who dropped by. I watched their baby for about an hour and then they came in for a visit when they came to pick him up.

I can't really think of a worst, perhaps DS tracking mud into the house.

What I learned: DS + water + dirt = mud tracked in the house

Oh, and I think that I forgot to post that Ella's first tooth came in last Thursday - quite exciting.

Beautiful!!!!! what great results....looks very inviting. and what do your neighbors think now??

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

We cross posted.....but wanted to also say, beautiful little ella, too....such a sweetie...thanks for sharing her with us.

Wow Gardengirl, I love all your trees. I've never understood why people tend to chop all the trees down around houses.

Thank you Betty, for understanding so perfectly. I'm far from shy (too far, some would say lol) but have no wish to be intrusive.

gardengirl...great before and afters...what a difference you've made there.

Thank you gilli...Ella is beautiful! How old is she? My youngest grandchild, Addison, (Addie) is six months old. I love her to pieces and wish we lived closer.

Here is a picture of her taken on Fathers Day with my DFIL, who just turned 90 in February. He still gardens, too!

Cardiff, ON(Zone 4a)

Addie is such a sweetie. Sometimes I wish that we lived a lot closer to our family. DH's parents haven't even had a chance to see Ella yet and she'll be 8 months old next week. My parents were here for her birth but thats it. We'll be seeing everyone in a couple of weeks though. DH's family will be coming for a family reunion we're hosting and my parents are coming for DD1's baptism that we're having at the same time.

Betty - that is too funny about your shoes.

Sharron - Jazz is sooo cute.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

The babies are so cute. the house before and afters makes me jealous, nobody here cares about their yards at all here, with the desert critters eating and killing everything they just give up. I wish I could, it would be easier sometimes.

glad things have been so busy for you Betty, it seems like you really have to be doing something all the time and stay busy, I admire that. I go in waves and then I have to stop or take a trip or I`ll go nutts.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Welcome Jan and all the nubies here, so nice to grow our crop circle here.

Good morning, go to bed early and see what happens ...lots of interaction...I'm just so excited to start my day of with friends...so much to post that I will wait till I arrive at work...didn't sleep most of the night and can't move too quickly so it will take me longer to get myselft ready...talk to you all about 9:30am....

Chester County, PA(Zone 6b)

Good morning all!

Betty, so sorry you did not sleep well :o( Hope your tiredness doesn't follow you throughout your day.

So nice to wake up and see the warm *welcomes* from all you regulars (who stayed up much later than I did last night) for all of us new people.

It's too early yet to pick a best/worst for today but my definite *Best* yesterday was finding this thread and all of you.

If there was a worst yesterday, I can't remember it now lol.

What did I learn yesterday? That my world just got a little larger....and that's a GOOD thing.

Here's my *Pink Climber Bed* this morning, which is also the view from my back porch. You can see how tall and green the corn in the background is.

*Sigh* Life is good...Hope everyone has their very own perfect day!

Best - I found green tomatoes on my plants, things are happening down in the garden

Worst - my neck is killing me, two days in a row now

Learned - more than I wanted to know about the urinary system!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Tangie...beautiful picture, what is that plant in the lower right corner? I have that and am not sure what it is....has yellow clusters of blooms later? what is that?
sharon

Chester County, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Sharon. BTW: Jazz is too cute! Gotta love the kitties.

That is tansy....DH just whacked that clump back by half a few weeks ago...it's a runner in my garden, but not too hard to keep in line so I leave two big clumps of it in that bed. I love easy keepers and tansy is that.

Hi bluekat...I am new but not very shy :o) Hope your neck feels better soon and that you learn about something more fun than UT's today...

Jan

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Betty, sorry that you were unable to sleep well.....
I am outta here for awhile, I have to take down a gallery show and get another ready for hanging, so will check back in later in the evening.
You folks have a great day....sunny, and NO HUMIDITY here today...YAYYYY!!

Yep!!! Tansy, that's it. My uncle gave it to me years ago, and I had forgotten its name....thanks!!
And Jazz thanks you too.....

Morning, we did not arrive to office until 9:30 this a.m. as traffic was bumper to bumper....so now I've done my work for the day lol..it's 10:30am and have all day to play..ordered western sandwich as my tummy's hungry...looking for pain killers as well...

Shar...How are you feeling today? Hope better..now when will you get the results? How can you not smile with Jazz around..isn't she just adorable..settled in now I'm sure...

Jeannine..I'm in awe of what you've accomplished since purchasing your home...beautiful home and look at the gardens..stunning...I'm envious of the gardens shown here..I keep wanting the mature garden but it's only been last summer and this summer and a few of the beds I've just created in May soooo I'll have to be patient and see what each year brings... Your home looks soooo inviting, bet the neighbors are envious.... thank you for sharring...

Gillibean ...you have a beautiful daughter...oh how I'd love a grandaughter...love grandsons to bits but so much I could share with a grandaughter...If I'm lucky I'll be around for great-grandaughter..lol other than being away from your family, I think you've made the correct choice for your family..it's getting crazy around here...
News this morning made me sad, a little 16 month old girl was visiting her grandparents and their tied up 1/2 rockwhiler and 1/2 sheppard killed her...not know to be a vicious 10 year old dog..but maybe it was jealous .. no details as yet but isn't that tragic? those poor grandparents and parents...

Dawn it must be so difficult and frustrating to garden when you've so little rain...do you also have a water ban or are you on a well system? As for the go/go/go..think it's something my family all have in common...we've always projects galore to do..not happy unless we're active and doing things...

Jan are those butterfly bushes...I have 2 that look like yours but no signs of flowers as yet...look at the wonderful view you have...I'll have to get out my map and see where you are located...actually was thinking of it this morning...purchase a USA map and put stickers to show me where you all live...that would be fun...

Kim, will you shortly have enough tomatoes to bring to the market? why are you learning about the urinary system???? Is that for farming purposes...or human purposes???? Now what did you do to your neck...chores that are much to heavy for you I bet...

Shar..organizing a gallery..oh what fun...that should keep you out of mischief for a few hours...last night I filled the screw holes on the back of muskoka chair and put it out to dry, sanded it, but took a few minutes to relax on the couch with an afghan cover over me and that was the end of any more work..lol..

Laura, maybe you could tell me what sort of things you would like to learn and I can teach you by posting instructions...might be a challenge but, could work..taught some other ladies a Christmas project via posts and photo's...their finished projects were amazing..af for Herbie (Frank) not sure where he is, perhaps we've frightened him off...miss his stories and comments..so Herbie, IF you are out there, please join us...we need a man to keep us under control with his wit!!

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Thanks so much for the warm welcome to this thread! It surely is a lively one and if you miss one day, it takes a long time to catch up!!! So I'm not caught up yet.

Worst yesterday: Feeling so sad over missing kitty.
Best yesterday: Seeing my pregnant granddaughter and helping her and her husband move into their apartment.
What I learned: "This too shall pass." Eventually.

Chester County, PA(Zone 6b)

Ahh, Murmur, you certainly speak the truth....

So sorry kitty is still MIA...hope she comes home today! I'll keep a special thought for you.

May I ask when GD is due? And do you know if you will be having a little girl or boy to spoil?

Betty, hope you've hunted down those painkillers by now. I've dealt w/arthritis since my late twenties (a VERY long time ago, I assure you) and pain is NOT your friend :o(

Is there a picture posted anywhere of the chair you restoring? I'd love to see it/them. I hope you are doing before, during and after photos? And yes, those are butterfly bushes...they started blooming here about a week ago. An atlas with sticker markers sounds like a great idea. If you happen to get truly bored (and already, I can tell that's not even a remote possibility for you!) and want to pinpoint me, google my zip....19344.

That is so tragic about the little girl...do you know how or why the child was allowed to be with the dog without proper supervision? With a dog that size and age (ten is pretty old for large breeds) it could very well be a medical cause that triggered the "attack". Pain comes to mind and they are also treating many older pets for a cognitive disorder very similiar to Alzheimers in humans. Abnormal aggression is one symptom. I know things happen no matter how much care is taken and am not placing blame, but tragedies easily avoided haunt me.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Murmur...kitty WILL be back in a few days...just taking a vacation...they have been known to wonder for a few weeks..will pray she returns..I'd be lost without my 2....won't it be great to have them nearby....maybe you can get some babysitting in?

tangiegirl..the chair I'm doing is brand new..we call them 'Muskoka chairs' not sure what you call them...I will post photo for you to see....

This is the set I painted for my son and his wife...

I will post the one I'm doing for myself to give you an idea of what I'm trying to achieve....

Ah....I see....pic won't enlarge for me but they look to be what we call "Aidirondack" chairs. They are much more comfortable than they look; aren't they?

Have you painted a scene or design on the back slats? If I squint, it looks as though you have. If so, what a fabulous idea! Very creative. Perhaps more pics when/if you have a chance?

Jan

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

yep we call them adirondack chairs her, it does look like a scene is on them.

Murmur, we had a cat that dissappeared all of a sudden after we got a new cat because an old one died, that seemed to ruffle her feathers so she vanished, first for a week and then she`d come back and the next time for two weeks and later we noticed her ears were cleaned and another time she had a collar on, so she moved in with another family too. Cats are wierd kids, they usually come back. Hope so. it is so emotional if they don`t.

Kim what happened to your neck? Is it off topic?

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

hi there, cant sleep so thought i would pop in,

what were the xmas projects betty????

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

I get so involved in reading this thread, then I forget what I was going to say to each person.....rats!!! Gonna have to start taking notes.
will start with the gallery.
when I retired after 37 years of teaching art, the county judge executive asked me if I had ever considered having a gallery to show the work of local artists. In this entire county there is no art gallery. Of course there was lots of gallery space at the school where I taught, so I didn't think beyond that. anyway, I told him I would be interested in such a gallery, particularly since I know every artist in the area...had 'em all in school at one time or another.
In the meantime, the county had built a new judicial building, and the city that the county seat is located in had built a new city hall....so that left the 100+ year old courthouse sitting fairly empty except for a few offices. On its second floor is the old courtroom, complete with the old, old, old, wooden benches, etc....he asked if that room could be turned into a gallery space. Of course i said yes....so by last september we opened with the first show....lovely work from folks throughout the county. they had added lighting, and wood strips around the walls for hanging....so I had no expense. anyway, we did a christmas show just for kids work....then did a little "stitch in time" show so that we could include needlework that the older folks had done....and several others in between. so I just direct the gallery. Had neglected it since my husband died in april, and decided it was time now to put up a new show....so that is where I have been today. got the old show down, the new show is half up.....all is good. Will send photos when it s finished...OK? fun thing for an old art teacher to do.
Just got home a little while ago, so will end this post for the moment and will return later when kitties have settled down and i have grabbed a bite to eat...
shar

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Posted some photos of the gallery on the Kay/Sher thread in the Prayer forum......they are photos of shows last fall and Christmas. will post the new show on this thread if my feeble brain lets me remember. Hate to post the same things twice......and you would get bored seeing them.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Good evening all..it's almost bed time but thought I'd post first..

Had friends for supper..spaghetti..made enough on Sunday to feed an army..could invite friends each night this week and not have to cook..lol...so that was fun..we all played t.v. bingo and none of us won...
they've just left so have to clean the kitchen and tidy up..girls come to paint tomorrow night so I don't want to get behind in my routine...

Best thing that happened to me today is I picked up my new car..it's a fun little car..suits my needs...not fond of the goldish orangy yellow, but as long as it's safe it's ok...they say it's the colour of the 'year'

Worse thing that happened to me today was the pain in my back shoulder...tonight it seems better..will take pain killers (gggeeezzzz almost said birth control) now where's my mind tonight...lol...

What did I learn..some individuals probably thought me odd for sending d-cards as we've never posted on any threads together..was fun to do...

Sooooo dear friends..I'll respond to your posts tomorrow..it's Betty byes for now...spending money tires me out!!!

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

B which one did you end up getting? The one you wanted originally? I expect you`l be bopping around the country now real cheap, if that exhists anymore. Liz keep us posted as to what is going on with you.

shar that is a worthwhile endevour, the gallery

Wonder i hope your relaxing now and have a nice night sleep. It is so hot in the days here, thank God the night is cool or we would never sleep.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

betty, when you

Quoting:
Had friends for supper
... how did they taste?

that was an old saying from an aunt who always tried to teach us 'proper' usage, saying 'friends TO supper', unless you actually planned to eat them, LOL.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

I do like this thread!!

Best thing today: Dinner with three gf's - fabulous restaurant, expensive meals, and we're worth it.

Worst thing today: Kitty still not back - I don't know if I mentioned that some of his fur was on the front lawn so he got into some sort of trouble, not just wandering. Plus he's the ultimate homebody and is always close by me when I garden.

What I learned: That I haven't quite given up hope on Prints aka Bigfoot returning.

My gd is due on Halloween and it's a boy. My youngest dd is due September 1st and it's a girl. So I get to be a grandma for the 5th time and and great-grandma for the first time in less than two months time!

Gardengirl, my goodness - miraculous change in such a short time!

Tangie, beautiful grandbaby!!

Gillibean, beautiful little one!!!

Betty, you are an artist in so many ways - that pond is going to be the ultimate.

Shar, I am looking forward to seeing photos of the galleries - and hearing about them is marvelous as well. Jazz is precious!!!

Sorry I'm not responding to everyone - I'm starting to get confused . . . lol!!

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks everyone for the great compliments! The last 8 yrs has been a labor of love for our yard. The one thing I do each year is divide stuff up and move it around to fill in spots. I also mix herbs in where ever I can. But of course, like any gardener, everyone else's gardens look so much more like what I want to achieve. I want that "English garden" look where every inch of the garden is taken up with one plant or another. Back in May, I went to New Orleans with my DH on a biz trip and volunteered at the City Park (Botanical Gardens) while he was in meetings. Their butterfly & cottage gardens were gorgeous and just what I want mine to look like! And considering all of the damage that had taken place due to Katrina, it was amazing how the city and the volunteers go the park back up and running. I highly recommend a visit there if you're ever in NOLA. I met some of the volunteers at the park and they were just wonderful people and so highly gracious for everything the American people have done for them. I can't wait to go back!

Here's a few pics from there.....
