Nice Peony. I think you mixed me up with grammy - the wheelbarrow was her photo!
June Flowers Are Bustin' Out All Over - cont. from May
Alas, the wheelbarrow is also in my photo and that pile is not getting smaller while I'm inside !
"I think I have more [emotional associations] with plants than I do with food."
Me too Alyrics, by far.
We're all doing a good job at getting confused lately. What thread am I on anyway? Was it my wheelbarrow full of daylily roots in an empty garden or the wooden one with impatiens? Or as usual do I not know what anybody is talking about? Is it the other gram? alyrics - beautiful peonies. My mother used to have peonies in her garden. She gave me a couple but they did not transplant well and I killed them :-(
HI Grammyphoeb - I think the former owner here bought one of those packages of 6 different peonies - they are all planted together in a nice bed and are still not very big. ( prob Van Bourgondien with their test tube sized seedlings ). I brought a whole bunch of different ones with me when we moved that were from our family. I never intended to have all these peonies, it just happened that way. I think a couple tricks with peonies are
- only transplant in the fall - I don't know why but they don't seem to make it if moved in other seasons.
- they like composted manures as a side dressing - better than chemical fertilizers. I also use Bulbtone on them - they do not do well with high N fertilizers - treat them like a bulb rather than a regular perennial.
- I cut off the peony foliage and put it in the trashcan in the fall rather than composting or letting the foliage lie in the bed over winter. I always read they are very susceptible to botrytis which I already have in my garden and I try to keep the peonies clean.
Did I ever tell the story of buying a $10 pack of 3 clematis from Van Bourgondien? I think it was 6 or 7 years ago, and the Nelly Moser just bloomed for the 1st time this year - I've lost track of these threads too - the pic might be above. The jackmanii and an Ernest Markham - I'm still waiting to see what will happen this year. Those clematis literally arrived in a test tube with a gel medium - they were like just germinated seedlings. Needless to say I didn't order there again. I was so peeved I was determined to see if I could get them to live. They were so tiny I put all three into a clay pot and sunk it in the garden for 4 years till they were big enough to handle. They ruined me for mail order thats for sure.
I knew I should of bought Niobe! It's really lovely....do you have it in part shade? If in full sun, does it hold it's color well?
I have it growing up my two Paw Paw trees. Since this is only the second year, they are only just getting high enough now where they will end up in full sun. The one under the other tree is much higher and will be flowering in full sun. When it does I will take some shots. I'm curious about that myself.
Thanks Victor, I'll be looking forward to the photos and seeing how sunfast it is.
Or moonslow??
Thank you pirl, I see it holds it's color pretty well.
Wow, there's a slight difference!
I whacked that plant back unmercifully this spring. I should have done it last June but it was one of those things that weren't a priority at the time. The fact that I got any blooms at all was a shock.
Pirl, some sources show it as either group 2 or 3 so it must grow some on new wood.
Actually the trellis is old wood.
(Sorry but I couldn't resist.)
Very good pirl.
Pirl is always very good.
The color does change from year to year. I have noticed that with mine.
OK - I thought maybe I had done something to it! (I still may have done something to it!)
My Nelly Moser is ultra pale this year, too. Another Nelly is normal. A blue one is bluer than ever and a pink is darker than ever before. Two that are always open by May 27th don't even have buds. Jackmanii is late - all five of them. The doubles are so huge - bigger than ever. A very odd year indeed.
It really is a freaky year all around. Hope we get a good soaking tomorrow night.
Me, too. Regardless of how often we water there's nothing like a good rain and we need it.
Good job, Kassia!
Nice Kass!
