Thanks so much! I do hope I get to come! I"ll know in a few days (left daughter a message).
Connie
July 21st West Houston Meet
We hope you can come too, Connie! I know there's a lot of us looking forward to meeting you. If not the plant swap, then another time.
About the fireman's cap.....I reconfirmed myself. The large one planted in the parking lot is only 3 years old! The even larger one by the building is 5 years old. This tree grows so fast. Ann, my small one has the thorns but I did not notice thorns on the large tree itself. Then again, I'm pretty short and don't have the greatest eyesight but I sure don't see any thorns up there.
hmmm...the ones I have are slow.. I've grown about 6 or 7 and they all were slow.. then again they were all from the same tree.
Saturday 21st forecast
Scattered T-Storms, 60% chance Rain. Still have a few days for the percent to change.
It could be the amount of sun and just the minor climate difference. And soils.
Everyone had better bring an umbrella, just in case.
Rain?
I'd rather it do it Friday and get it overwith but it'll be alright... at least we won't have to worry about plants getting watered at home while we're at the swap. :)
Hey! I just got a couple of Wandering Jew plants (http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/596/) for hanging baskets on my porch. While reading up on them, it says they are "ridiculously easy to root from cuttings." Does anybody want one for next week?
Warning - they can apparently be quite aggressive, so should be in pots only, away from soil where they can "jump."
That's really pretty, digigirl! Before long, it will be weeping out of the basket and looking lovely!
ok, due to some family events i am now gaurdian to 2 of my nieces, would ya;ll mind if i bring them along ?
please pardon grammer , i am not sending this from a reg computer
As far as I'm concerned...children are ALWAYS welcome in the garden. We have to pass it down to them! We can make it fun for them too! How old? I'll bring some stuff to make it fun.
knolan....well said! so true!!
Yep. Bring the kids. How old?
Sure.....kids love the jungle here...
If anyone wants to bring plants not on their trade lists, I'm setting up a "free for all" table. Yeah...People "think" they don't want that plant until....it's there...looking at them...sending plantelepathy....take me home...taaake me hooooome.
So is the food subject all taken care of then? The driveway will be clear for loading and unloading. Ideally one can back in right to the car port, where there will be an area for plants, a table to put the food on (for unloading) and another to unload miscellaneous stuff- chairs, fans...
RJ, you're a Gem of the First Water for having this gathering at your home. I like the idea of plantelepathy. I've started a whole lot of plants and will bring them along for anyone that wants them.
I'm curious as to where everyone will park their cars and trucks, once they are unloaded. Your street will have cars all the way to the main road! HAHAHAHA
Alot of people park at Berry Hill just around the corner on Beverly. But, wouldn't be the first time the street was taken up for an event here!
they are always welcome in my garden as well, just didn;t know how ya;ll would feel about it...thank you, one is 16 mos , the other 3 years , they both love 'playing' in the garden with me, i just have to watch the lil one super close, she thinks its funny to eat wierd stuff- typical i know, but live frogs ???-her mom found her once with half a frog once- so i try to keep her busy with the cheerios
ewwww!
Want to make that funny noise again, Digi?! :)
I lived in the great city of Houston in 1980 when my son was born. I saw him "exploring" in the corner of the kitchen one time, picked him up, and found a roach leg dangling from the corner of his mouth...just the leg...
I fished in his mouth for the rest but it was gone...I"ll never know...!
Okay, more ewwww!
My boyfriend is sitting here and tells me that when his sister was little, she ate a bunch of dead flies, thinking they were raisins (she had just finished a box of them).
Ewwwww!
Ya'll are too funny! Just think of it as.....protein.
hahaha, yuck
I had a friend whose daughter loved to eat the giant grasshoppers. The ones that are brightly colored??? She found her several times with half a grasshopper hanging out of her mouth. Yuck!!! She always told her to either swallow it or spit it out. I'd have died if I saw one of my kids with half a still wiggling grasshopper in their mouth.
slight change of subject...but.. my cat was going around with a cicada in his mouth most of the other afternoon. It was like his own buzzing, moving toy. Till it got tired of buzzing and moving........then it was supper. ewwwww
Would anyone be interested in Clerodendron Ugandense cuttings? I've got more than I can deal with!
I had to look that one up. It's beautiful! I'd be interested for sure.
Sounds wonderful, but could not find it, Smockette. I'm not very good with flowers.
I also have some big Ugandense plants..They were cuttings last summer...
I'll bring a double handful. If you aren't familar with it, Randy has some @ his house that you can see Saturday.

Smockette - that is beautiful - I'd love to have one of the cuttings.
This is getting close and I'm really excited about Saturday! The rain and lack of sun did in my cestrum starts and the bush looks almost dead. I guess it's not a good swamp plant... and my back yard now fits that definition.
My back garden was muddy too. I just put down 3 tons of pea gravel along the pathways....A vast improvement.
Hoping this link works...this is the Ugandense. You won't miss this one, it's next to the steps of the deck to the garden, and you'll have to move the branches out of the way. There is a clematis vine that grows in it, and there is some dramatic effect when both are blooming.

Scroll down to May 1, 2006 & click on the pix to do Randy's hard work justice! It is close to the bottom.
Bringing enough for everyone!
:~)
Cleredendrum Specieosissimum looks cool :)
That is beautiful, Randy! The clematis really pops out in there. I love it. Thanks Smockette and Randy.
I haven't been saying much, 'cuz I haven't been sure if I'd be able to come after all. So far it all looks good, though. Yayy! I just went out and weeded (don't even ask me how long it's been.. yikes!) and took stock of what I have to bring.
monkey grass... LOTS and lots of it!
TX Mountain Laurel seedlings
Impatiens balsamina 'Camellia Flowered Mix' seedlings and seeds (http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/124441/)
Boston fern
Japanese Painted Fern - Gymgirl, Randy
Southern Maidenhair Fern - Gymgirl
One sweet little white vinca (the periwinkle kind, not the ground cover) that doesn't particularly like where it is planted, but is trying valiantly anyway.
Someone asked me for a heuchera earlier, but I can't find the post now. Sorry! Serves me right for not writing it down! Speak up, whoever you were. I have a few extras, too, so I'll bring them along. - Gymgirl
I've still not tried to do cuttings, and it is obviously too late to get them really started. I'm sorry about that, too. I do have several salvias and a Epiphyllum if anyone wants fresh cuttings.
Epiphyllum hookeri: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/2100/ - Randy

Oooooooooooh Marylyn_TX,
Can I get some of the Japanese and Maidenhair Ferns, and a small piece of huechera? If someone else wants the huechera, give it to them first. I'll be happy with the two ferns! Thanks!
I would like the painted fern too, and the Epipphyllum hookeri ! You can shop for things you like when you get here..

I got to looking at my Crepe Myrtles today. One is putting off little starts. It's my understanding that these can be rooted. It's a light pink one and I'm just going to cut them off and toss them. Unless of course anyone wants to try to root it. If so let me know.
Anne
I'll try to remember to bring some Avon Skin So Soft for the skeeters.
AuntAnne, stick them in some water & 'bring 'um on down'!
The best & most rewarding of my playing in the Garden, is trying to get something, (anything) to grow. But I am getting better! Now, I want it to grow & bloom! lol
