July 21st West Houston Meet

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

see..that's what I'm saying ..bring your extra stuff..and I'll put it on the non pre traded table!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I have a ton of 'extras'......mostly succulents and cacti. Some I've rescued but really don't have a place for them. Gotta clear that back porch off.....hubby's having a hard time getting to the grill.

I started another flat of cuttings a few days ago. Some will have taken by the time we meet, others will just need a little tender loving care for a week or two.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Kristi, I was just talking to my dh about putting cacti in the side bed under our bedroom windows. I can't wait to see what you bring! :-)

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, Ms. Marilyn, I think they have your name ALL over them! I sure wish I hadn't dug up all my agave and giant aloes now. (Those aloes were so pretty when they bloomed). But wait! I know where I can get you some for free! And spineless prickly pears. If you're interested in any of those, let me know ASAP....my buddy who has them is joining me that day for the swap and I'll ask her to start them for ya tomorrow. They grow big fast.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Sas will be bringing all cactus! If you are interested. She is like Karolyn & doesn't get on the puter except @ work & that isn't internet! lol

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Smockette, you are one great gal! That's for sure!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm just checking in here this morning. I have out of town friends that are taking some of my plants back to MS. After that, I'll know what I'm taking to the swap, but I think I'll just show up with "stuff" instead of trying to keep up with any requests.....When I read over the thread, it looks like a feeding frenzy. Can't keep up...
I'm bringing plates, forks, and napkins. Probably some dish to pass. Oh,... and a husband. Do not talk plants with him! His eyes will glass-over. Now if you want to know how the grass is growing...well....
Looking forward to meeting all of you. Hope it doesn't rain too much.
Sandi

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, the prickly stuff is going in a fairly narrow bed between our house and the house next door. I don't want the plants to reach out and snag anyone unless they are getting too close to our windows. (I'm not implying anything icky about our neighbors, just about the prevalence of icky people in general...). The big agaves I've seen would probably be too wide. I have aloes there already and they don't bloom. What's the secret?? Maybe mine don't get enough sun? Spineless prickly pear sound great! Thanks, Kristi. I'll be looking for Sas' stash, too, Smockette. Thank you!

Maybe I should take a trip over the the cacti and succulents forum, huh? :-)

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Sandi,

Hope to see you and DH there (only the "happy hour" if that..daughter "rules" this weekend!).

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

There will be more plants than we can handle!

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8a)

I plan on being there and will bring cheese, Wheatables, grapes, Special K Bars, if they turn out, and brownies and some for swapping). Hopefully, the rain will not cause flooding. Has there been a head count lately? Randy, are we allowed to bring our cameras? I have been reading your diary in amazement and am eager to see all your plants and meet everyone. Will bring cuttings, plants and seeds that I have.
Carol

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Carol, how polite to ask, but of course you can bring your cameras!
There was a DG Houston Nursery tour that ended the day at the house a week before Rita visited town. Here are pics from that..
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/545887/
If you can't see it ..go to maggiemoo's sticky of Texas Garden events...scroll down to Sept 17th Houston Nursery date, click completed in pictures.

Course, it's changed quite a bit since then...It will have changed from your visit this weekend to next weekend probably...Always changing something.

Speaking of head count...is it possible to get a list of real names next to the DG garden names?
I've got name tags...

Got the Garage cleaned out today, thought I could make a hang out area in the event of rain.

You are the most organized person I know.

Kristi Nolan and with me will be
Karolyn Brown

Missouri City, TX

Bill & Linda Grasser

We will load a few more items in the trunk, too. Canopy I use for the fish-fry's, lawn chairs, TX umbrella. A couple of plastic plant-flats, too.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

If y'all like, you can just d-mail me your name and I'll edit the list. That way, there won't be 4 bazillion answers with names, just a nice concise list!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Okay..cool...thanks

Houston, TX(Zone 10a)

Lisa Runfalo will be bringing
Kailea Elizabeth (age 3)
Miranda Renee' (age 14 mos)

as far as what i'm bringing, it's sort of a jumble as of now, these two little ones have shook up my world a bit and they are no 1 priority now

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Kristi-
it's merely the "appearance" of seeming organized. I have a helper doing the name tags...yes..delegate..delegate...

I've been getting most of my tasks done at night...has anyone noticed? It hasn't been raining at night ...at all...

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Uh oh! Apparently, there's now a per-day edit limit! It won't let me edit that post anymore today. So I have to start a new one.....

Consequently, I'll be saving up edits rather than doing each one as I get them. So if you don't see your name appear right away, be patient! I'll get you on there as soon as I can.

Hi all I think I am going to try to crawl out from my house and come. The depression has been overpowering and I tend to stay here even when I know getting out is what I should do. But it has a grip that is unfightable most of the time.

I don't have any plants to bring and said I have enough to plant already but temptation is getting the best of me in the last few posts. a sweetie Gymgirl dmailed me over 2 weeks ago to meet up somewhere and carpool. I will bring something even if it is a pkg of cookies :O). I need some of that wandering jew please digigirl.

Hope this is ok to be a last min party crasher.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

RJ............................i see that p is going to make it to Houston..............soooooooooo sorry i am not, but we are trying to plant a trade get together in south Texas the end of September..................you might want to come...............have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Rj, I'm over on the S Tx Swap thread. Excuse to go see baby brother in Pt A. Also, my place to crash. Don't want to do that drive RT in one day, AGAIN! Once was enough!
Well, we are migrating all babies to the carport. I think I must have gotten 3-4" of rain fr the looks of my 5g buckets. Got to survey all going into to the CR-V b4 I can start loading it! Planning on doing that in the PM. Not good @ that type of stuff in the AM.

Additions that are not totally drowned:
Blue Pea Vine, White Tx Star, Wedelia, Cypress Vine

Seeds: Sophora Tomentosa, fresh Zephyranthes Grandiflora, Red Tx Star fr mqiq77 in GA.

Sandi, we are bringing you a couple of China Dolls & a couple diff kinds of 'Jew'.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes..that would be fun! I definately am in for a trip to S. Texas.

I planted 6 Firemans cap seeds at the beginning of the week, and they all sprouted...for whoever wants.

You better come............we need some laughs!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and plants!!!)

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm not Carol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We could change that up a bit & make a song....I'm not Lisa! lol

Rj, can you find a pix of your 'powder puff' to send me? Not sure which one you have. Inguiring gardeners want to know!
:~)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Smockette = Prince. :-)

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Hahahaha.

I've got the pesto made and the chicken marinating. Should I bring garlic bread?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Before I forget to ask, can I take the empty wine bottles after the wine tasting? Fly_Girl is making a bottle tree and she needs the bottles to accomplish it. Hopefully, we'll have some colorful ones. I've got one really pretty cobalt blue one for her and a couple of the standard greens. If any of you have colorful ones floating around that you don't want and would like to donate to the cause, that would be great,

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8a)

I bought name tags as well earlier today. Am trying to convince DH he should go as well, but who knows. If he should show up unexpectedly, we can just throw him a doggy bone. :) And, if he doesn't, he may end up on a cactus.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

ya'll are funny...Randy, you got a speedboat dock? Break out your life preservers, too!

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Ok, I've searched the other thread and I can't find what I'm looking for, so I'll have to ask. Which one of you mentioned the Cafe du Monde coffee? It was only ONE of you that mentioned it...

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I am bringing fruitless pomegranate cuttings, Red Cascade cuttings, evergreen wisteria cuttings, Possibly little red, a double off white, and a double peachy pink oleander cuttings. Let me know how many of each oleander as I am just going to bring a few of each. I have some baby mimosa trees growing. And if I find more it will be a surprise as I don't want to over work myself and be tired tomorrow.

reat Smokette, will be looking forward to seeing the wandering jew and china doll. Thanks

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

You get to edit just a few times in 24 hours, Valerie. I can't remember how many... 3 or 5? I run into this problem all the time, too. :-)

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Bill and I would like some oleander cuttings prob. a few of ea. if you can. I am bringing some light pink crepe myrtle cuttings and can bring white and lavender ones as well if anyone wants them.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I Sure can. I would like a few of each one of yours. I don't have them. Are they the really tall like mine or the shorter ones? And I have never rooted them are they easy to root?

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I've never rooted them either but i've been told that it's do able. And yes the whites are the tallest, but these pinks are about 15 - 20' tall as are the lavenders.

Anne

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8a)

TO ALL and IloveJesus99: I would love any/all cuttings you might like to bring.
(IloveJesus99: Think I met you several years ago at Maas Nursery
tour. Right or wrong? Well, will let you know tomorrow :)
I will bring: cuttings: wax myrtles which the cardinals love
double-red hibiscus
night-blooming jasmine "ah, the scent"
nandinas
blue passion vine
rueilla (Mexican petunia)
pink ice plant
hens & chicks
red crape myrtle
bulbs: red amaryllis (limited)
plants: one bromeliad
polka dot cactus (bunny ears)
unknown succulent: sends up stalks w/ beautiful
pink hanging flowers in the winter; will spread.
I keep mine in pots.
seeds: numerous ones including the beautiful Mexican flame vine
ground cover: an unidentified one with small yellow flowers.
If anyone can skateboard over to the i.d. section, maybe you can i.d. two or three plants for me. If not, doesn't matter.

I have read to always attempt to take three cuttings (pencil size in diameter) cut right below the leaf node of each plant; better success rate. Hopefully, I will have 3 of each but may not make quite that diameter. If not will bring what I have.
As you can see, I'm not particular about plants. I can beg for anything that grows :) -- cuttings, plants, seeds, etc.

If you have any other suggestions/instructions in taking cuttings, let me know.

See YA'll tomorrow. Can't wait. If I take all these cuttings and Houston floods, I'll be in deep disgust.
flowerette, carol
