July 21st West Houston Meet

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

My salad is potato salad. :-) I haven't gotten outside to figure out what plants I can bring, though. I'll do it tomorrow and report back.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

I have an Indiana recipe for a corn cassarole that I was going to bring. It is eaten hot or cold so I thought it would be good but now I'm thinking that might be too dinnerish....(new word). Does that sound too heavy or solid? Should I think of something that is to be eaten with the fingers?
LMK

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I think it sounds delicious!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok, I think we need to make a formal decision...

Do we want to bring real food, or plan on eating out? This is sort of turning into a plant nursery/thrift store/whatever-else-looks-like-fun-along-the-way tour of the Heights, with a plant swap and wine tasting before/after at Randy's house - and that sounds like a blast!

If we are just going to meet at Randy's house in the morning and then go out playing, maybe we should plan on eating lunch while we are out and about, and just have snacky sorts of things for the afterglow.

Alternatively... the folks who want to do the touring can do that in the morning and we can all meet later in the day (for lunch or late afternoon/evening?) for the official potluck/plant swap. Meeting too late will make an awfully long day, though, especially for those that have to drive quite a distance and are going home Saturday night.

What'cha think???

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

It's like my Momma told me when I was growing up, if you give 'kids' too many choices, they want to do it all! Of course, 2 or more kids want to do them in different order!
I plan on doing all I can if it takes for 9am til 9pm. And.........
I'm a kid that is sitting down & being good so I can go, when the 'adults' make the decision!
Adults! LMK
:~)

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Well said, Smockette.

I guess we should wait on Randy to make 'an executive decision'. I'm so flexible that all ya'll have to say is what time to be there, I'll come with 'stuff' and go with the flow.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm the same as Knolan (which is convenient since we're riding together) - super flexible and ready and willing to go with whichever flow everybody likes! Stay, go, eat out, eat in - whatever!

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

As long as I can be there and we swap, eat, talk, drink, swap, eat, talk, drink I don't care where. Just need an address, time and really good directions......

Ann

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Okay, here's a way to get a clearer picture of what people want to do. I made a poll for us that will count up what people would like to do with regards to food.

Please take a moment to vote:

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I just discovered you can do Clematis from cuttings. I can try to do some of these if anybody wants them. Here's what I have:

Claire de Lune - http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/122508/ (Note: This is a new plant in my garden and hasn't bloomed yet, so as far as I know it's Claire de Lune, but....)

Viennetta - http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/130682/ (same note on this one)

Cassis - http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/159394/

Missouri City, TX

Well, since it seems like an all day affair - I'll stick with my opening offer -
Cheeses, crackers, some snack meats, and a couple bottles of Circle S wine.

Would be good anytime - morning break, afternoon, or twilight.

If anyone wants rosemary for drying or cooking (not potted), I have plenty.
Also cilantro, dill, chili peguin, gourd - seeds.

Bill

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Bubba,

I just ate at your restaurant. MmmmmMmmmm.good!

Digigirl, I'd love a cassis!

Missouri City, TX

Thank you, Kristi.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I'll pot it up for you, Knolan!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, I'm inclined to agree, keep it simple, a pot luck will have food available to match anyones schedule of arrival and departure. Having said that, lets keep in mind what time we're starting, how hot it will be, how excited everyone will be and plan proportions accordingly...It sounded to me a ham and what was planned was already quite a nice pot luck!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I think we'll have plenty of good stuff. We still need volunteeers for the paper items and utensils.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I'll bring plates and utensils.....what will we need....service for about 400? I'll check back later....DH is watching movie (Departed) and I 'm covering my eyes so I don't see it.
I'm taking some hibiscus cuttings and I hope they'll root in time for the swap.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Thursday I am taking cuttings of hibiscus and althea and anything else I can think of that someone might not have. I will pot up a nice variety of jades. I have so many little pots (I just can't resist them) and a whole bunch of jade. It seems to thrive on neglect. :-)

I am so looking forward to meeting all of you folks.

Janet

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

You too, Janet! Can't wait to meet ya. I've got your name on my jade!

BB - thanks for offering to bring the paper goods. I have no idea what our headcount is up to yet. Digigirl, were you keeping track of that or just the food items (nice swap poll, btw....I liked that)? I hate to start another thread asking how many heads we are but maybe we should just to have folk say "I'm coming + one" and nothing else (yeah, right....we like to talk too much).

Also, it seems like there are several people interested in several tours. I'm happy to host a "cooking tour" to Penzey's Spices and a restauant supply warehouse and, if enough time, a little venture to Lucia's Herb Garden (I'd have to see the interest first before I call them). Would anyone else want to host a tour to the thrift shops and another one to the wonderful nurseries in the area? We could schedule those for the afternoon. Anyone that wants to go on the cooking tour....dmail me so I can get a headcount.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes afternoon will be good for tours, it gets hot (er) in the back garden from about 1pm-6:30pm.

we can post a roster something like (not an official time schedule)

Swap & Greet 9AM-11AM
Lunch & nibles 11AM - ?
Zone9tropicals 12:30PM
Other: 1:00Pm 11th street, Penzeys, thrifts, nurseries

Great itinerary! Great food list!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Don't think I didn't consider putting in

Nap 4P-6:30P

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

After all that food, you'd better factor in a nap!

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Man, I wish I had internet at home. Whenever I log on there is so much to catch up on.

Long exciting day. I may stay overnite so I don't fall asleep on my way home. Anyone in that area can recommend reasonably priced motel? I may even do some Houston sightseeing the next day. I don't get away much - this will be a treat.

Maiden: I just started making them. It's a lot of fun, but it can be messy - so I do all stepping stone projects in the carport.

Better take us off your list. Maybe Smock and/or Smockette can come by my house to pick up and deliver whatever I have or will receive from this swap. From the looks of things I will not be recovered enough to attend and I am very unhappy about all this. Have Fun for me!!

Ann

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Ya'll still want greens & ham hocks? Looks like lighter fare on the menu. Let me know...

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh, Ann. I was so looking forward to seeing you there but I'll be glad to come by & take whatever & return with yours.

I do, I do! But I'm only one of 25+

Yes, please!

Missouri City, TX

I try to stay on a see food diet - if I see it I will eat it. LOL.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Definitely bring the greens, Gymgirl! A mix is what makes a potluck fun!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Anne, I'm so sorry we won't see you. I have a few things started for you so I'll try to get them to you. Prayers on the surgery and the recovery!

Gymgirl....you can't back out of those greens. Uh uh, no way.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Wow! I haven't checked in in a while and I'm overwhelmed!!! I'll bring some kind of tuna/chicken/meat pasta dish. I love casseroles. Like, maybe mac and cheese with chicken in it. Yummy. Can't wait to meet all y'all!
Do I put my wish list of trades in here? that Almond Verbena sounds wonderful.

It's going to be so much fun! I've shopped with the tropicals folks before and lust for everything they have. Can't wait to meet them, too.

Margaretx

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Margaret, I'll start an Almond Verbena for you too! Glad you are coming.

I'm bringing a greek chicken pasta salad but I think we could definitely use two with the size of our group. That sounds perfect!

Houston, TX(Zone 10a)

checkin in... :)
