Kristi, did I ask for the Almond Verbena already? If not, I'd love a cutting of that also.
Ann, I'm so sorry that you won't be able to join us. You'll be there in spirit though so it'll be OK to talk about you. Right? HAHAHAHA I'm just kidding! We'll all miss you there. Your health is the most important thing though. I started your althea the other day. I'll be sure to send it with Smockette.
July 21st West Houston Meet
Janet - I had to go check. Yes, I started one for you. As of this evening, it looks like half of them are healthy starts and the other I might have to try again. C'est la vie. I've tried to expose the cuttings to morning sun and keep them shaded from the afternoon. Seems like cuphaea's, porterweed, pineapple sage and all the various hibbys are happy. The vines seem reluctant (all passies are looking poorly), the dutchman's pipe is iffy right now. I am trying some 'special rose cuttings' that will be a surprise .Anything that doesn't perk up in another week, I'll try again and if they don't take I'll have to give up. The heat we are experiencing is really inhibiting the cuttings, I think.
Perhaps, if we make this an annual thing, it might be better to do in May? (Randy, I'm certainly not volunteering your place year after year....we can find lot's of places). What do ya'll think? I just seem to have better luck with cuttings when it is not so horribly hot. Anyone else experience the same? The only BIG problem I see is that it might interfere with the CS roundup. I wouldn't want to take away from that. Perhaps we could convince Dave to visit us? We're so large a group! Dave....you out there? Why don't ya'll come on down?
Thanks Kristi. This is my first year to try cupheas and I really love my little bat face mice. I smile every time I see those little ears. :-)
I started up some cuttings myself last night. Coleus, althea, lipstick plant, night blooming jasmine, durantas and a few other things. I made enough "beds" to take many more cuttings. I'll go around the entire yard tomorrow and round up some goodies. :-)
Talk about me all you want. Just spell my name right HaHaHa. If I'm at least w/you in spirit that's all I could ask. Thanks so much for everyone's concern.
Ann
Hey, y'all - check out this classified ad for a deal at Maryott's Daylilies:
http://daylilygarden.net/davesgardenoffer.txt
He's got a list of daylilies that you can get for $4 for a double fan. Shipping is $9.00 plus $1.35 per plant. These prices are good through 7/31.
I would like to order a couple but there's a minimum order of 8 double fans, and I was thinking that if others who are going to the get together wanted to also, we could combine the order, have it shipped to one of us (we can request a ship date) who would then bring them to the get together and distribute which would save on shipping for everybody. I'd be willing to coordinate.
Anybody interested? If so, rather than posting here, please d-mail me so we don't make this thread even more huge!!
OK. 1 order of greens and ham hocks coming up!
Awww, Ann, we won't talk about you....we'll be missing you! What is the final date of surgery? Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!
If they can get my blood pressure down out of the stratosphere, I am due to be at Katy Memorial Hermann @ 1:30 pm MOnday, June 25 for approx 3:00 pm surgery. About 2-3 hours for the surgery and in the hospital for at least 6 days. ?? recuperation at home w/a wound V.A.C. as the surg. will not close me up completely and that stupid wound V.A.C. weighs 4-1/2#. You can see I am in for a real "picnic".
Thanks to all of you for the good wishes. I probably won't be getting back on DG for a couple of weeks or so after Monday morning but I'll be thinking of all the great people here.
Ann
Will keep you on the prayer list, too! Godspeed and good recovery!
Linda
Ann,
If there's anything we can do to help you, please let us know. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Many hugs,
Janet

Oh Ann! I know this must be disappointing. But you'll be better than new after this surgery ! My prayers as well. We'll miss seeing you.

Smockette, I would LOVE to have a China Doll!
What kind of roses do you have?
what is a bump?
It's where you make a post in a thread, so that it goes back up to the top of the forum due to recent activity. Makes it easily viewable.
Well, back in the70's there was this dance we did......
Kristi, I KNEW you were older that dirt, tee hee
hey...vossner..guess what...small world...I've been chatting with trackinsand in Floridas..says you guys are good friends..
My firemans cap tree went to seed!
Please!!! I want some of those seeds!!! Randy I saw the tree in someones yard when I used to take my daughter to school. I had never seen anything so beautiful. They had no idea what it was because when I stopped to ask one day after seeing someone in the yard. It was there when they bought the house. So I googled and googled images for trees with red buds and FINALLY saw the tree !
A nursery nearby has a fireman's cap. I wanted one till she showed me the thorns.
Hahaha Vossner! I took a risk with that one, heh? ''that's the way..uh huh, uh huh...that's the way.. I like it"
I love my fireman's cap! I have to get another for the front yard.
howdy randy. I love tracks. she is the most wonderful lady! I don't know if you heard my fireman's cap started getting eaten up w/ something. I applied Sevin and that thing bounced right back. I'm been meaning to take a pic, it is looking so pretty.
I was at Enchanted Forest the other day and they have one that is simply monstrous! If mine gets even 1/2 the size I'm in trouble, lol. Theirs was absolutely gorgeous.
Thought about you the other day. I went to Pennzeys to get the mexican cinnamon (sp?) and some other goodies. Then went for shrimp enchiladas at Tampicos. yum!
Okay ......my experience with the seeds is that they are pretty good at propagating.
aah..sorry I missed you...that is pretty close by!
My firemans cap ..goes back and forth..will look pretty ..then like doo doo...I think it prefers to be isolated, and not so crowded like it is at my place. I've never seen them very big, so that one you saw must be ancient.
Actually, the huge one at Enchanted Forest is only 3 years old. I had to ask! And Voss is right, it's humongous! They have 2 of them that are really big. I planted mine only a few months ago and it's almost doubled in size.
huh....the ones I have seem to be much slower than that!
the one I saw there was in full, brutal sun. So is mine. Randy yours is in shade right? I would say mine has double just like Kristi's.
I can't believe that thing is only 3 yrs old.
I couldn't believe it either. That nice guy that's always there told us how old it was.
Honestly...I can't believe it either...
Mine is in mostly sun, east side. I have a tropical firemans cap next to it...It should be in bloom for the swap weekend.. It's more spectacular than the hardy.
no seeds from that one yet.

K, if you're referring to the soft-spoken, older gentleman, that is Gary, Betty's husband and co-owner.
Yes, that would be Gary. Honestly guys, he said 3 years. My mom heard it too!
Guess where it was grown? 2002 was the first time they bought them fr us! hehehe
Inquiring mind had to find out! lol
Thankyou, Smockette! I knew I wasn't crazy!
Hi Guys,
I've just now heard about this meet....and will already be in Houston for a few days in a hotel on the west side. So... will not be able to bring plants, but WINE for sure...my DH is a wine guy, so we have hundreds of bottles!
I'm not CertaiN if I will be able to come bc I already told my daughter that the "weekend is hers" but she "might" let me come for a few hours!
What time is the "happy hour"? Let me know where and what time. Can't wait to put faces to names after a year...
Connie
Hi Connie,
This is the schedule set up now. I haven't heard any problems with it so far...sooooo...this is pretty good I think. Of course with this many people a schedule is merely a guidline I think

Just off 10th and Studewood. The street starts as Montrose street in montrose, becomes Studemont, then Studewood. just over the bridge of White Oak Bayou which is also the beginning of The Heights.
Land Marks are:
10th and Studewood : Glass Wall Resaurant
11th and Beverly : Berry Hill Restaurant
My house is the second to the last house before you hit Beverly, so the closest cross street to my house is
10th and Beverly. If you were to turn right on Beverly you would find Berry Hill Resaurant 1.5 blocks away. There is a 10th 1/2 street..Beware. Beverly then hits 11th which is a main arterial. Berry Hill is 11th and Beverly, 1 block from Buchanons Nursery. (if anyone is familiar with Buchanons.
