Thanks knolan. I'll check it out.
I went to the roundup in College Station in the fall and had a wonderful time. I'm looking forward to meeting more fellow Texans and re-meeting others.
RJ, MWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA That's a waybigo kiss for letting me know about the duranta needing to be in a pot. It's blooming like crazy right now.
Janet
Houston (and surrounding area) meetup/swap meet
LOL...
You guys were right on top of the list for me to get a hold of...!
Oh coooolll! the Duranta is blooming..isn't that the oddest thing? It's usually the other way around.
Outside of being lazy, I've been working alot of overtime...House Taxes and unrealistic escrow stupidity.
I have a box for you that's been sitting on the floor for a few weeks..I"m going to put it by the door now. I don't think you should wait to pick it up here, as your garden has had reservations for sparkly hour quite some time.
In case ya'll are wondering...they are the last of some mirror mobiles I snapped up at a hardware store in the neighborhood. Every afternoon, bits and pieces of sunshine dance all over the garden...Sparkly hour!
I really liked the way the sunlight hit those mirrors so I'm looking forward to sparkly hour!
I haven't had a chance to check the other thread yet, but will try and get that done today so we'll know what to bring.
Janet
Just updated the summary on the other thread. Please take a moment to check and make sure I haven't missed you and your contribution. Please note that we lost one of our main dishes, so if someone can bring another, that would be great! Let me know if I've missed anything!
Thanks!

ooo when is sparkley hour? Is it late afternoon/evening? if so could that be the time of our gathering? sounds really cool... what do ya'll think? or...even 9/10 am- ish could be ok too......sometime when it's not too hot.. although it sounds like dinner type foods we got...you know choc choc choc lol... i haven't tried the dipped leaves yet, i think i'll wait to mow the lawn so the neighbors loose mint that got in my yard will be big... I'm online this eve, moving is, wierd...kind of a long story anyway. Does anyone know about jack fruit?
This is kinda weird to plan, isn't it? Since we're doing a plant swap/wine tasting and meal, all combined (Randy, speak up here) and it's so darned hot in the afternoon, it would make sense to do early am or late afternoon. The heat, tastes of wine and full bellies....Randy might have folks napping on his couch. Then again, some folks are coming from distances and we don't want them driving home late. Maybe the plant swap and tour around 9:00 or 10:00 am, lunch right after and the wine tasting for those who want to participate in early afternoon. This would get everyone on the road back home at a decent time withouut being overly exhausted.
I would also be willing to bring an ice chest full of bottled water. I think we're going to need that.
I do agree that the morning is our best bet for anything resemblng cool, The way these things usually work is people drift inside and hang out in the ac for a bit, and go back out and this seems to be a ratio of half the group. Then there are those of us who like being outside most of the time. I am so flexible about the time though, lets hear from folks that have a little driving time to put in? I figure that I'll have it opened up here early and all are welcomed to arrive early or at their pace.
Yes sparkly hour takes place in the morning and evening. Less so in the morning this year as I just put up a canopy in the seating area. I've been working alot the last couple of days.. I'm trying to figure out the details on a shared file system at work in my spare time..I'm thinking it's rather safe to assume that this event will be held here, so will be busy plotting and planning.
9:00 a.m. That's my vote!
I second the motion!
What is the address? I live in Magnolia. I think it would be closer if I spent Fri nite @ the Farm to get there! lol
Let's see! Leave @ 7:45 fr home & hope to be in town by 8:45 & head which direction? lol
Randy, I have a 10 X 10 gazebo tent thingy that hasn't been out of the box yet. Would you have any need for more shade, and a place to put it up? I'd be happy to tote it along.
Janet
I do have one set up on the deck already, but it wouldn't hurt to bring it. It is shady in the back garden until aroun noonish.

I asked b4 if we might need some box fans for outdoors in case there is no breeze. Got extention cards also.
Want me to bring them?
Yes that would be great. I am also going to try and borrow a home made fan my friend made.
I'll bring it along with me. Is there anything else that we can bring? Just let us all know and surely someone will have whatever is needed. But we won't know if you don't ask. :-)
We're looking forward to this get together.
Janet
ps Are there any thrift stores close to you? IjesHadt'ask! HAHAHAHA
Thanks..yes I'm looking forward to it too. I have plenty of chairs, but if you have a folding chair or something like that, that might be handy.
Now Janet, of course there are Thrift stores close to here. I could keep you busy for several days there are so many close to here..
I have camping chairs...Also we could stick a cooler of ice (opened of course), or a towel dipped in icey water- in front of a box fan. To have a bit of "ac" outside ;)
That's exactly what I had in mind, protable small.
I've got 3 of those automatically folding canvas chairs I'll bring also.
That portable cooler sounds like an excellent idea.
Connie and I will be counting on your "knowledge of the vernacular of thrift stores" that will be close to you. Somehow, some way, we'll have to fit that into our trip. Afterall, we wouldn't want to waste gas when there are places to shop and treasures to find. :-)
Janet
I will point you to an area where there are about 1 per block, you won't have to travel far to the next shop.
Thanks Randy!
That will be excellent. We want to spend as much time visiting as we can. :-)
oh yes, the thrift shops in the heights..you can park and then just walk across the street to go to one, then go back to your car, then cross the street a different way, then go back to car , then the same... its fun
Y'all just quit!!! I'm hyperventilating just imagining it all! HAHAHAHAHA
Breathe Janet...breathe !
You're going to have a blast out there. Have you ever been junking down on Harwin? There's a lot of junk but there's some cool stuff too.
I'm breathing. OK.... much better. Thanks Connie.
I went to Harwin with my boss one time, after a convention we went to in Houston. My boss wasn't the easiest lady to have any fun with. I'm sure it would have been much more fun with Connie! All I really remember about it was lots and lots of jewelry, some expensive and some cheap and gaudy. Of course, that was about 10 years ago, and I've slept many times since then.
There's a bunch of crap and then....when you least expect it, you find something good! Always an adventure but, yes, you must go with someone willing to have a little fun. The Heights is more fun. Here's another good place, it's on the tip of my tongue, oh let me google it and I'll get back. It's a church out in River Oaks that puts things on consignment. They list 3 prices, for two weeks apart. If the item doesn't sell by the first date, the price drops 30%, if it doesn't sell by the second date, it drops another 30%. But on Saturdays and Sundays, you will have to park several blocks away. All the interior designers get there first thing in the morning, just looking for that special buy. There's everything from china, to furniture, to really expensive jewelry, purses, etc. I bought a sapphire ring that was appraised for $450......guess what I paid.....$16.50. Yup, a great place. Let me look it up.
Found it.....
http://www.theguildshop.org/
This place is pretty cool if you happen to be there at the right time.
That sounds like a place to go when we have more time. I like the idea of them being close enough to walk from one to another so I think we'll stick close to Randy's.
What we need to do is come up with a list of the thrift stores and map us out a "treasure hunt". :-)
I told you guys..come here..use the house as base camp...shop, come back to camp, lunch, wine, ice tea..shop more.
Who else do I know would offer their place up like you are doing, Randy? I plan to do a little shopping myself, that day (like at Penzey's and perhaps the restaurant supply place right around the corner......I could spend hours in there...the prices are incredible...I want an asparagus steamer!!). A woman on a mission and not willing to pay Williams Sonoma prices.
Unique, The Guild, if you ever decide to go, is not far from Randy's place at all. There are so many places in that area to visit that it would take several weekends to go to all of them. And somehow, they're all worth a visit to. You'll have fun browsing from place to place that you can walk to. Later, if you get the time, a driving tour of the area is fantastic. I was lucky enough to spend a lot if my childhood in that part of town. I miss Kaplan's!
Ooh, is this near Penzey's? I want to go too. And Knolan, I'm all about seeing that restaurant supply store, too! Glad I'm carpooling with you! ;)
Wonderful, Digigirl! I wasn't sure if I was going to have carpool buddies or not.....glad you're on board. Yep, Penzey's isn't far and it's sooo much fun. I love smelling the spices rather than ordering from a catalog. If you want to go, we'll make a special trip there as well as the restaurant supply. I bought some great things at some great prices about a month ago. It's well worth the trip.
Sounds like a lot of fun. Can't wait!!
Oh, I forgot to say that, if you stop by some of the shops, like 'Buchanan's' and some other places, they have a little kiosk with maps to all the little thrift shops. It's usually where the newspapers and magazines are.
That's useful information! Thanks Kristi
Okay, I want to come to the Houston Swap if it's not too late. Want to meet all of you. Going to bring my designated driver along. Sooooo......need to know motels in area. DH might not want to talk plants all morning! We'll make a weekend of it.....maybe do a little shopping too.
BB - you're on board!!!!! Yeah! That just gave me goosebumps! I can't wait to finally meet you.
Randy probably knows the hotel situation on that side of town much better than I. If you don't mind staying on this side of town (Sugar Land)...dmail me.
Better look at our trade lists on the other thread......I'm happy to start some new cuttings for you.
Yeah!!!!
Super! I'll have to poke around yard tomorrow and find some things to take. We just had a garden club sale and I donated a lot of plants. At least there's time to start more. Can't wait to meet you too. I'll look at the trade list tomorrow. Sounds like such fun!
Sister gave me a red El Capitalio hibiscus. I've never tried rooting hibiscus but would try if anyone wishes. I have other hibiscus but no "named" ones large enough for cuttings.
The only time it will be too late to attend the swap will be July 22nd...haaa Lol
I will have a stack of the magazines with shops and maps at the house. Remind me please Kristi!
I love Penzeys spices..it spoiled me to the point of passing the spice section in the grocery store in a rather disdainful and snobby like way..lol...spoiled.
I went over to Waynes last night (zone9tropicals) and we did some poison arrow cuttings. It seems to be coming a Sunday thing...glass of wine, do some cuttings, check out the lates plants.
