Houston (and surrounding area) meetup/swap meet

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I'll remind you, Randy.

Your Sunday tradition sounds like a lot of fun.

I know, Penzey's does ruin it for the rest of the spice world, doesn't it? When the catalog comes in my DH tells me I don't need anything else! Yes I do.

Houston, TX(Zone 10a)

That sounds like a lot of fun.... what is this penzey place? Is it in town? If you just want a basic Motel there is one on I 10 and washington next to a Denny's, I think that would be close. If you want something Fancier I'd google places on Allen Parkway. Although Randy would probably know what is closest to him tbh (to be honest)

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Manic - Penzey's is this fantastic spice store. If you love to cook, you need to check this place out.

My UPS man came ! They're here Randy! Woo hoo! I'll be havin' a sparkly hour this evening!! Thank you. :)

The cuttings are planted for the shrimp and the seeds are planted for the double purple devils trumpets.

Boy ! all this stuff to do we might have to do more then one day Janet!

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I tried to tell you that Connie. HAHAHAHA

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Can you believe how long these threads have gotten?

And we still have over a month before we get together....

Houston, TX(Zone 10a)

Yes! isn't it wonderful.
I do love cooking, I try to grow my own herbs if I can though... Although I still have a whole cabinet full of bottles. Thanks for the head up, and that is on my way home from where I work on Fridays.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Your welcome.

I'm not so familiar with the hotels. I might have to grab my Heights magazine and map. There are a couple of hotels on Dallas off Montrose...they are close to Down town.
The Heights has alot of Bed and Breakfast.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

We don't need a hotel...just a motel, or B&B would do. Just need somewhere convenient to put my guy if he decides gardening is not his priority on that day. Too bad it's not a football day......sigh.....

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Okay ...I'll look around...I will start here first ..this is the Heights web site. I think it has all that stuff Kristi and I were talking about as a matter of fact...
http://www.houstonheights.org/index.htm

I only found one place in that link, but it is very close to my house..5 minute drive or less...15-20 minute walk

This is a list of hotels in the area. My zip is 77008, and there are a couple listed there. 77007 is close too.

This looks nice for a B&B!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yep..that's the one...

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Heck, I might stay there! LOL. Looks like a great place to get away from the kids and animals for a night.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks! I'll start looking right now!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

It'll be a weekend party. Happy hour 8pm...the garden lights up at night with a variety of cool lights with the greenhouse glowing with blue and green florecent lights.
Then we could do Java Java Breakfast, and shop 19th street, Heights Farmers Market, Nurseries, Thrift stores..
Too bad this isn't on first saturday...We have what we call First saturday in the Heights, and a trolley runs to all of these places...it'scool.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh Randy, I didn't even think about THAT. That would have been great.

Ya'll check out the other thread and see what I posted about the menu. After I posted I really started thinking that maybe it would be better if we all just brought finger foods instead of trying to do a full meal. If we do that, the items I bring will be a lot different but I certainly don't mind. I love coooking up yummy fnger foods.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I suppose it will depend on what time we start and it seems like 9:00 AM is the one I've seen so far.
If it makes any difference, Berry Hill Restaurant is a 1/2 a block away as an alternative - also 11th Street Cafe, is 1 block, Di Cappos accross the street from that...boy.....I think I"m lucky!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hmm.. would that be ok with everyone, if we switched to bringing munchies and planned on eating "out" instead of doing a full potluck? It sounds yummy to me, but if it makes it too expensive for someone to come, we can go back to potluck. I'm happy either way.

Beaumont, TX

Fine by me! We got a whole month so surely no one has started preparations. LOL

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm riding with Connie and I'm all for that. We could "do some plants" in the morning, go out and eat lunch, shop, then "do a little more plants". Let someone else do the cooking and cleaning up! HAHAHAHA

Janet

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

You are lucky! Eating out sounds good to me, too! I can really go with the flow of what everyone wants to do (and can stay late for the happy hour). I'm happy to bring foods or go out. It ALL sounds like fun.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

MTS - I made my chicken pasta salad yesterday. What? It won't be any good by then? ;>}

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

The inspiration for my baked ham came the other day when I baked a Black Forest Ham to slice up for sandwiches.

I'm really easy too. And will go with the flow.

Janet

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey, the B&B looks great. I'm going to check on it in the morning. Had company tonight and couldn't get back to computer till now. Thanks for tip!

Beaumont, TX

LOL Not hardly knolan! Better get to eatin'! !

So Janet...Go Saturday come home Saturday night...
stay Saturday night, come home Sunday? or go Friday and stay thru Saturday? Stay Friday Saturday and come home Sunday???

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Janet - if you do the baked ham, that should be plenty for a main dish since we're all bringing sides. I could make the brisket if our headcount is really large. The more I think about it, since everyone might be coming at different times of the day, it might be hard to plan a meal at a restaurant. Randy, what do you think? Here's a suggestion.....we all bring lunch and those that are staying over into the evening hours, go out for dinner after the wine tasting. Just a thought.

BB - I hope this will be a suitable place for you or that you find something in the area to your liking. My DH won't be joining us that day but if your DH might like someone to pal around with, I'm sure my DH wouldn't mind hosting him at a sports bar or something. He's pretty fun like that.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Connie, if we did an overnight thing, (which you KNOW I'm game for) it would have to be Friday to Saturday because Jennifer and Curtis are leaving for Vegas on that trip they won Sunday and I've already promised to watch the kiddos for a few days.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Knolan...that's so nice of you to offer up your husband! I'm going to have to convince him to stay at the B&B. He saw pics tonite and said to wait till morning to book. That always means something else.... Sure looks like it's convenient to the gathering spot! I l thought it looked kinda cool. Well, I'll be content to stay anywhere close....or far....just as long as we go. More tomorrow, still have to clean the kitchen....

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I certainly know how hard it is to convince them to stay at B&B's.......trust me. It's that 'not again.....' that I dread. There's so many places in the Houston area, you're sure to find something suitable.

Connie and Janet, I'm sure ya'll will find great places to stay too, when you decide what you're going to do. Let us know your final decision and we'll all accomodate you're desires the best we can. Sounds like you'll have maps and the like to take ya'll wherever your hearts desire.

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi, Y'all. Just a note to let you know that I will not be checking my email or DG for at least a week - maybe 2 - because I have to go into the hospital for surgery tomorrow, June 20, and will be in the hospital for at least 6 days after that and some recuperation at home. After surgery I usually don't like getting on line 'cause I'm usually "doped up" and really not myself. I will check back in w/y'all soon as I can.

Ann

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Take care of yourself and we'll be waiting for you to come back. We'll keep you, your family and the doctors there in our prayers Ann.

Many hugs and wishes for a speedy recovery.

Now, Ann, you be a good patient & get recovered real soon cause we want to see you on the 28th.

Went to a little store in Big D while I was waiting for City_Sylvia to get home Friday nite. I found some cute little glasses for the tasting. I'll admit it, I'm a wino! These are not for winos but they are just the right size for tasting! I bought all they had which was only a dz. They are so small & cute I just had to get them. hehehe

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Take care of yourself, Ann! We will be praying for you, too.

Psst, Smockette... it's the 21st!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Just wanted to see if ya'll were awake. hehehe

But Ann, I want to see you on the 21st, for sure! :~)

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

You're good, Smockette!

Anne, you're in my prayers too. Hoping for a speedy recovery.

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

Y''all are so kind. NOW, the hospital calls and tells me that the surgery has been rescheduled for next Monday. I put in a call, post haste, to the surgeon and all they could say is that they had to talk w/the dr. to see if my cut up could be moved back up to tomorrow. I still get to do pre-op today. Wheeeeee! Lots of fun. I'm really trying to make it to the meet as you can see. Gotta be there and in good shape. HaHa

Ann

just editing to say I just got word from the surgeon's office that I get to have the surgery on Monday, June 25. Wait some more.......but at least I know that soon I'm going to have it done and over with.

BB - there'll be some men there, and other subjects besides plants that will be discussed, I'm sure.

If ya'll are staying till Sunday, I'll put in a plug for fo our place for Sunday breakfast - at least the champagne is free. Only day I cook there - except for the Fish-Fry holidays.

Bill

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Okay...I'm back....and now I have to ask.....is it better to stay over Friday nite and be there early Sat morning.....or be a little late, stay over Sat nite, and get to eat at Bill's Sunday morning?? When is the lighting of the garden??? I don't wanna miss it!
I don't think I can make DH stay over two nights!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

That's a good point about the pot luck, it';s economical and the food is around for whenever anyone is hungry, less strategical planning getting people somewhere to eat etc etc.

Friday night I'm working until 11pm, although I will be putting in for a day off, that's not awarded until 3 days out, so it's not practical to plan for anything.

Shall I have the sports bars mapped out for Bill?
