You're so good, Randy!
BB - that's a tough call! If I were you, I'd drive in Saturday and stay the night Saturday night (that way you can participate in the fun evening festivities and see the lighting). If you get there in the afternoon, I'm sure there will be some of us hanging around and others coming back. I'm marking all of the plants I'm bringing for trade so, if it has your name on it, it's going home with you regardless of what time you arrive. And I really plan to be there most of the day. I just want to venture to Penzey's and the restaurant supply. If you're inclined to go on that trip, I'd be happy to wait until you arrive. BTW - look at my list and see if there's anything you want so I can get it started asap. It's over on the other thread.
Houston (and surrounding area) meetup/swap meet
I'll go look at the other thread. We'll just get an early start Saturday, and plan to stay overnight so we can go to breakfast before heading home. glad I checked...don't want to miss anything!
Ann I hope all goes well next Monday...
Now I'm thinking bringing a breakfast type of food like a quiche... mmm I don't know, D'Cappios...the coffee place.. who needs food ! haha just kidding, Really though I keep changing my mind anyway... From breakfast to dessert..
Scatterbrained tonight, glad to see where this thread is going though :) This gathering is getting huge, That is great! I'm totally getting jelous of Randy's location, smack dab in the middle of everything!!! Thanks for sharing it with all of us ;D
Trying to find a new high speed internet/cable package for the new house. Comcast hung up in my face because the clock switched to 10..which I guess is shift change in new york :(
Knolan....Penzey's and the restaurant supply sound interesting! I'd also like to hit a couple of nurseries. I really want some more tropicals. I've had to relinquish my front yard to the deer...so it's perennials,.... but the back is mostly water guzzling tropicals...... Maybe after the morning tour, I can take off to a nursery or two. I've been to Caldwell's in Rosenburg a few times and loved it. Are there any places near enough to make two in an afternoon?
I need to scout my plants and take some cuttings. We've been gone a bit. Maybe Saturday I can stay home and get busy.....
BB, Zone9Tropicals is on the "tour list" that RJ posted before. I've been there and can assure you that Wayne will have loads of tropical plants that you will drool over. He's very reasonable on his prices also. And big bonus, is that he's just a hop, skip and a jump from RJ's house. :-) Here's a link to their website. http://www.zone9tropicals.com/
Janet
Ooooooooooooooooo..........that's exactly what I'm looking for.....thanks for link. I'll start a list....
I just ordered a few water lilies from the new co-op that popped up this evening. Hope the raccoons approve.
Looking forward to meeting all of you....
BB - I can take you to Penzey's and there's an awesome nursery, right around the corner, called Buchanan's Native Plants that we can go to. Randy has already scheduled a wonderful tour of Zone 9, which I believe we will all go to, and that's a tropical nursery. We're sure to be thrilled. I have something in the works but can't tell ya'll unless it comes through. But I'll happily take you guys to Buchanan's and Another Place in Time.....great nurseries. We'll do that AFTER the Zone 9 tropical tour so you can have the full effect of that.
If you have time, I highly recommend going out to the Enchanted Forest. It's too far away for us to drive down to that day but, since you're going to Bubba's for Sunday breakfast, it's certainly worth the 30 minute drive from there. It's in Booth and is similar to the Arbor Gate in Tomball but, as a personal choice, I think it's better. Some may disagree. It's a matter of opinion. Great place to go on your way out of town.
Don't know whether to spring all this on DH or not! Already mentioned we'd probably be 'more comfortable' driving the truck down to Houston. He knows that translates to, "I need the truck to carry back all the plants I plan to buy....."
Sure sounds like you've got a plan and it's going to be a great weekend. Can't wait to meet ya!
I finally found buchanans...it was pretty much made of awesome
http://gardens.com/go/view/12216/
this place is awesome too... but its down the street from my house....spring branch..
it is a nursery and 'country store' ...
Lisa, are you looking @ my customer list? Yes, they buy fr us also. I have known Matthew for yrs.
lol
hey... just picking up this thread... did you guys already have your get-together?
Cajun2 - Nope! Our get-together is on July 21. Wanna come?
Smockette, no, i don't have your list per say. Evidently though, I'm finding it slowly by driving around town.... I totally forgot to grab that catalog too... really though, I went by and invited Matthew and Deb last night, they are 1 country block from the house (about 6 city blocks). ALthough since it's on Saturday I don't think they are coming, They did invite us all to run through there. I just bought the coolest fountain from there last night ,, and a bamboo windchime and as I was taking it out of the box, it fell and I broke it :(
I can't wait to meet you people...this is gonna be so much fun!
P.S. How many 5-gallon buckets (empty or otherwise) should I anticipate distributing? I have access to them and would like an idea of how many to bring.
So. If yah want at least one 5-gallon bucket, let me know, please!
Here are some Nurseries-- all within 5 miles of the house
Another Place in Time (down the street)
Buchanons (2 blocks )
Backyard Gardener ( 5 miles)
Joshua's ( 3 miles)
Rj
RJ - is that why you picked that house? lol.
LOL, might be!
Here's an expanded list on Gardens.com complete with map and how many miles.
http://gardens.com/go/
Oh cool! I'll put it on my calendar.
Can't commit yet... my honey is a truck driver so I won't know his schedule until it gets a LITTLE closer.
Would LOVE to... are we trading plants/seeds too? or just gathering to eat, visit and check out nearby nurseries? all good with me, just wanna be prepared!!!
Cajun,
I hope you are able to make it to Houston. We're all going to have a wonderful time. The weather will be cool (because we'll be wishing for that and thinking cool thoughts) and the food will be mahvelous! Just what you'd expect when a bunch of Texans get together!
And when it's all said and done, we'll all go home with beautiful plants! What more could we possibly ask for?!
There is a thread that is moving slowly down the thread list with all of the discussion about plants and food, etc. This is a link to that thread. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/726156/
Janet
This is a synopsis of that thread all condensed
http://davesgarden.com/journal/ed/index.php?tabid=2086
It does not include however all of the plants being swapped in the thread, hotels, directions, surrounding nurseries, tentative schedule etc. I am going to try and put some thrift shops in there. Speaking of which ...Kristi I did pick up some Heights magazines with maps etc...I will be picking up more before the event. They have things in there that I don't even know about. I live in such a great neighborhood!!!

Randy- how do you find the time to be so darned organized? LOL.
LOL, cut and paste!!
I've been trying to get projects done so the garden looks top notch, and we have moving room, but the rain...my goodness...the rain has turned it into Jurassic park..and makes it difficult to get anything done outside.
The rain....Yeah, tell my maters why the BBG and Ajax won't stay where I put it and they keep hosting Stinkbug conventions.....
my little cherry maters are yum yum...green peppers...and just picked some hot peppers that are delicious. I think I'm going to turn my front yard into a vegetable garden. It's got to be the biggest waste of ground in the U.S.
ooo there is a great lil coffee shop over that a way called java java... if its still there... they have the best soup!! If It's still there it was across from the ceramic shop, and 'nature's way'(organic landscaping)
My front yard is very slowly turning into a jungle :) The back yard has beds, I want my nieces to have room to run around when they come over, so I can sleep at night.
Yep, still there...had breakfast there saturday..good as ever..and your right..they do have the best soup. That's down the street from me too. About 1 minute drive time.
lucky! ~~~ internets from home again ~~~ :D
Rj did I just read that you are going to turn your front yard into a vegetable garden?????? Yeah right!!!! I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.

Edited to add items as they occur
it's getting close, I'm hoping I remember everything... i have a list somewhere..With all the rain, some things have rooted very well and some others have drowned
I've had the same problem, Manic. Some have thrived, others have seen better days....I'm holding out hope but can't guarantee. The porterweeds are doing wonderul. The Almond Verbenas are half and half.....may have to draw straws on those. Pineapple Sage, Lemon Balm, Hibiscus and all Cuphaeas are doing great. Passies and Dutchman's pipevine are a no go at this point.
I have a few surprises and haven't determined how to handle those just yet.
On another note, I sent a bouquet from all of us to plantlady last week and it hasn't gotten to her. I had no idea she was still in ICU and the flowers had not reached her. (Digigirl, let's correspond about this through email) .She's not doing well and needs all of our prayers. I'm not sure how much information she would like me to divulge here but I'm comfortable with asking you all to say a prayer for her and just pray for her comfort.
The bouquet doesn't matter.....my fault for not checking on the ICU part and I'll deal with that myself. At this point, it appears she will be in the hospital for an indeterminate period....let's all pray for a smooth recovery. When Ann does recover, I'm sure she would appreciate knowing how much we all think of her and I think it would be wonderful if we all let her know how special she is in a personal way. She wanted very much to be with us. So, keep posted and be ready for your happiest thoughts.....many of you suggested personal plants that you know she would just love....do that instead of the bouquet....it will mean much more, especially now.
I can't wait to meet all of you in a few weeks.....can't believe it's right around the corner.
Randy....are you ready? Is there anything you're needing at the last minute? I'm spending the night with Mema the night before so I am at your beck and call. Seriously!
Also, a note to those coming in from out of town....my grandmother (who has a lovely house) has offered a room with a double bed (very b&b'ish) and not far from Randy's at all. If you have an interest in saving money, she would love the company and the opportunity to pamper (but I have to talk to you first....I'll be there as well). If you're interested, send me a dmail. The evening before, we can go out to a nice restaurant and hit some gardens....woohoo!, we're partay people! Mema will cook us breakfast the next morning and send us on our merry way. Bubbles, if you haven't found a particularly grand spot.....Mema is 86, likes sports, has a huge plasma and gets along very well with men. I'm not sure that would convince him but it's certainly an option.
knolan....I'm still laughing at your post! You're tooooo funny! We're coming in Sat morning and staying over till Sunday. But, please tell Mema how much we appreciated the offer. That's so nice of her...and you! I'm sure someone will jump at the chance to be pampered!
It's finally stopped raining here. So good to see the sun again. I'm going to check my cuttings today and try to get a list of stuff I'm taking so I can post it. Some things have "melted" away in all the rain.
Heeheee!
