Houston (and surrounding area) meetup/swap meet

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I did offer a proposal to Lisa-
Have the meet at my place, Jungle Heights, and Wayne from zone9tropicals.com who lives down the street has also offered a tour of the operation there. He has loads of unique plants, and he and I talked today and if it's approved we are going to take some cuttings of this and that for ya'll. Just an idea...Deck for outside people, and a/c for inside people, centrally located- kitchen and all that...it's up to Lisa though, as I do not want to usurp, take over, etc etc what she has going on here, only offering options...

Ceejay - we're going to miss you! Thank you for sending to me. Can I offer something for trade?

Randy, that sounds like a lot of fun too. Whatever you guys decide on, I'll be there.

Houston, TX(Zone 10a)

Darn I was hoping to meet ceejay...

Randy's idea sound pretty cool though, seeing as how it is centrally located (closer to downtown) so those from the north and south side have a more equal distance to travel, Inside and outside, goodness I'd be fine with some grass on the ground and a bathroom not too far away. Another good point is not having to pay a deposit or security. Not that I'd mind paying $3-5...just the whole adding on things that certain places like to do, too complicated for some new friends having a gathering, in my opinion. I'd like to think if we were such a rowdy bunch that needed all that, we'd be locked up and not online talking about how we play in the dirt like a bunch of over grown kiddos. My vote is for Randy's location. Although it was only my suggestion that we do this, it's going to be all of ourses (sp?) baby. So how do ya'll feel about it?

I'm sorry to hear that 3 of ya'll have lupus also. I have an elderly client with lupus so I've sort of seen the effects it has. She is writing a book of her memoirs before its too late. It's a shame the memory loss can't cause the body to forget the issue itself eh?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Manic, it's totally your call on location. Whatever you decide is fine, just post so we all know where it's going to be.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I'll show up whereever you guys settle on. However, can I make a request? I would like to see a demo/short wkshop on seed collection? I'm a "put it in the ground and water it" kind of gardener, and have no idea of how to collect seeds. I have a ton of hibiscus (thanks to AHS show yesterday) and would really like to know how to collect seeds. I also have lots of brugs and daturas and would like to know how to collect seeds. Not to mention other things like salvia, 4 o'clocks and other things. How about a lesson or 3?

Anne

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Where ever we end up, I'll show you what I do..and I'm always learning, and I can bet 20 other people will also share their tricks..!
Rj

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Wonderful.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I'll share the few tricks I have!

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm always up for tricks, treats are nice too. lol

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I'll be bringing treats as well. ;>}

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Ok. I've been to Randy's place and it's a good location. Ya'll are gonna love his urban jungle!

I vote YES.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Crowelli - I was sure hoping to see your beautiful gardens! Randy - is there AC available for those with heat issues? Your place sounds great, also!

I'll go wherever everyone decides. It's going to be fun, no matter what!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I was hoping to see Crowelli's garden as well, although I've heard good things about Randy's, too. :-) I will be wherever we decide to go - and have no real preference as to which one. I'm sorry that isn't much help! LOL

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm going along w/whatever everyone else decides to do. Just give me some good directions and I can get there - I think.............

Ann

Missouri City, TX

Sure - just supply good directions.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Okay-
I hadn't realized crowellli's own house was up for offer, and thought it was a clubhouse.
As things develop, perhaps we can still see her garden?

Yes, there will be the inside of the house available for us to cool off, and sit and visit, and a 700 square foot deck that wraps around the house, 400 feet of which are probably potted plants lol.
I will set up a "loading and unloading" zone in front of my driveway where folks can unload and load their plants, I will have tables set up in the front so the trade plants won't have far to go from car to table and back. There is a Pecan tree that shades the driveway.

I'm not sure what time was set?
And this is July 21st? I have a 3 day weekend that weekend.

Rj

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Randy, I don't think we ever actually set a time but the date was definitely July 21.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Okay thanks.
The earlier the better during the summer time eh?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes! If not, I'll have a better operated fan stuck on my forehead. Haahaahaa.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I meant to say "battery operated".....geesh.....no spell check.

OK...I got new plants today and will add new cuttings to my list on the other thread.

Randy - my porterweed finally took. Hooray. Now, another question. Once it get's a little big (how's that for an oxymoron), how do you keep it from getting leggy? I hesitate to prune all the wonderful shafts that are producing flowers. I know, I should probably post this somewhere else, but I'm lazy. I saw beautiful, full porterweeds today and mine look nothing like that. Three - four main stems with straggly foliage is what I have. I hate to prune away flowers but if I must, I will.

Another topic that I don't want to talk about on the other thread. Almond Verbena. No one has requested one. I'm really surprised. This isn't a typical verbena. First of all, it's a Texas Native. Secondly, it's a large shrub (meaning up to 10'-12' x 4'-5' wide), it's highly fragrant with spikes of white blooms that attract BF's and hummers. The smell is incredible. Are ya'll sure you don't want me to try a cutting for ya? I have one cutting that is so far taken. If anyone else would like one, speak now or forever hold your peace. They take a little while to take hold. I'm just saying.....you don't know what you're missing out on.

Houston, TX(Zone 10a)

Well Kristi, if you want to twist my arm i'll take one ;) Yummy smells are welcome in my garden.

Thanks for the good wishes ya'll, i'm feeling much better, been settling in (unpacking) to the new house and unpotting plants all over the place, the internet has not made its debut at the new house, so I am at the starbucks on 34th and 290 until it closes.

The 21 of july is a saturday... we hadn't really spoken of a time at all... I'm not quite old enough to appreciate the butt crack o dawn however if ya'll would like morning, 9-am-ish could work hmm? what do ya'll think?

ps Thanks smockette for billions of pots that is awesome!!!!
pps Also i have good news, not really on topic, but i have my very first ever brug flower opening this evening :) :) :) can't wait to smell it, I'm working on a bat house, in hopes they will cohabitate with me on the property.
ppps Smockette has my number if anyone wants to get a hold of me offline (coz I won't be online much until the internet gets turned on at home)

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Manic - you're funny! My kind of gal. For my darling daughter's 9'th birthday, she received a bat house and a pair of David Bowie tickets. Mind you, a 9 year old only likes David Bowie for his role in "Labyrinth". And she liked it so much I had to take her to his concert. Well, the security guards thought it was so cute with her little crush that I was able to get her right up to the stage. I certainly didn't mind.......David Bowie and his music is totally cool with me and the genre I grew up in. Being 10' away from him was awesome. I hadn't been to a concert in well, I don't want to give my age away, but lets just say almost 20 years. I certainly never got that close to a rock star without a munchkin! I just think that's kinda funny. And every time I see the bat house, I think of David Bowie. The funnniest thing about it all was that I was scared to go. I thought there would be a lot of, well, weirdos. Punk rock people and that's not my thing. imagine my surprise when the first person I ran into was the Elvis impersonator dad from my daughter's elementary school. On top of that, everyone else was my age and just like me. Normal. It was a lesson for me....do not stereotye and realize you have an eccentric daughter. Yeah! She's not the norm!

Ok...that had nothing to do with gardening but you brought up the bat house.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Krisit, I tried to look up the almond verbena in plant files and it's not there. Do you happen to have a photo of it? It sounds great. I love fragrant plants. I have a weird brick wall about 6 feet in front of one side of the house. Don't have a clue why the builder put it there. There was nothing behind it but a big open spot with weeds right next to the front door. I've just put in two pink abelias and some pink Mexican Petunias there. I love the smell of the abelias and they're stuff trouble free plants, but from the sound of the Almond Verbena, I may have to dig something up and get one of those!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Crowelli, let me know b4 you go buy one! But have to admit they are on my wish list also. I just have so many things in pots that I need to get into the ground & I don't know where to put them. My landscaper got too busy to help me. See if I do her taxes again! lol

There's a link for you, Crowelli. These things grow fast. I planted mine in April and it was maybe 2' high then. It's over 6' high now.

I can start cuttings! For you too, Smockette.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

You are just so sweet! You got a big hug coming when I see you!!!
:~)

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Kristi - What is the blooming period on those?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

CJ, my catalog says spring to fall.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I found this picture. I thought I was familiar with this plant but..nope...I am interested. I love the scented garden. Last night Brugs and night jasmine permeated the air. I have lots of Night Jasmine available. I will post a list on the list thread. I'll admit there are things I'm not sure what it is ..such as ginger..I have a few kinds..but not sure which is which.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

That is very interesting. I was just showing a friend something similiar to this growing in the flower beds. It is shaped like that , blooms looking like that, although there are hints of purple blue at the top. I'm sure I had a bunch of seeds that I just scattered. Only thing is that it doesn't seem like a shrub yet...how young do they bloom?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I planted mine in April and it was rather small. I couldn't tell you how old it was at that time. Smockette may know as they were supplied by TreeSearch Farms. It was blooming within 2 weeks and hasn't stopped. I need to prune mine into a pretty shape but I really planted it to hide a utility box outside. It's doing it's job. I'll put you down for one, Randy. The smell is so pretty.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Me too on the Almond verbena. please. I got a bunch of pretties over the weekend too, will update my list soon.
