Does anyone have anything white or bright colored - something small that can be repeated thruout a bed? All I have is green w/a little bit of white which will disappear when the weather gets back to normal as the whites are swt allyssum and dianthus. I do have a few cosmos which grew much taller this year than in previous years and when they seed I will have more, of course. In the meantime I'm looking for a perennial or annual (or plural) that will fill in. Right now I have ruellas that are just starting to bloom and the hibiscus probably will not bloom this year until very late if then so all I really have is green and the horrible orange daylilies that I can't seem to give away (guess I didn't sell them too well). I have a pale yellow brick house w/white trim and it really needs some color other than purple and green and a little white. I have some spots of small wax begonias that don't want to get bigger yet and a small blooming bougie that is a beautiful dark pink/red. The star jasmine is finished blooming.

Ann,
What about white verbena or white lantana? Or the white daisies or the white 'maid of orleans' jasmine that is shrubby and blooms all summer? White agapanthus? Dwarf white crepe myrtles?
I have some 4 o'clocks that I can pot up for you. The "limelight" looks like it will be pink. I have some red/white dianthus as well. And some purple irises. Would any of that help?
black pearls sound awesome!!!!!
Thank you for sending me the thread Lisa-
I would be interested in this here little plant soarery ! Okay..I should use words I can spell eh? I looked at your trade list, so nice an organize with pictures!!! My back driveway is crammed full of cuttings and serves as the nursery for the garden. That's as close to a trade list that I have.. I see you have Papaya! You might be interested in the ones I have--- Hermaphrodites..no male..no female..every Papaya bears fruit...
Hey Linda! How ya doin? will be glad to see you again. We can exchange something Africa --more stories that is!
Hi Kristi! I've been trying to get some of these projects done, but keep getting side tracked. I don't know what my teacher was thinking when she called me a daydreamer! :)
Hi Debbie -
I actually made it to Jerrys Jungle and nabbed a couple of prizes. Did you make it?
I haven't bid for July schedule yet at work, but I have more Saturdays off than not as a rule of thumb....okay..I need to do some homework here and see where the rendez-vous is etc, etc...
Rj
Randy--you are the only person I know that's usually up as late as I am.....
=)
Anything you have that would be not too spreading, about the same height as a Katie Ruella would be appreciated at the July gettogether in Houston. Thanks so much!
Ann
Randy!!!!! I'm so sorry I forgot to send you the link. Please join us!
Ya'll, if Randy comes, he has AWESOME plants!
Already added him to the list of attendees!
Going to try very hard to make the swap. Will let you know a little later as to food to bring. I have mostly cuttings and flower seeds as do not want to give you any of my weed seeds. I will for sure bring brownies so they can be used as a bargaining tool. :) :) My list of haves and wants will be forthcoming.
Gymgirl, you will get your brownies!
Plantladyhou, Ann, I would love to have some Pride of Barbados seeds.
carol
Pride of Barbados seed for flowerette.
Ann
Hey RJ,
Been thinking about you, too. Would you bring me a papaya plant? Yeah, we'll revisit Africa together!
Yeah Debbie, I worked a week of graveyard shifts before I went onto vacation, and seemed to have kept the hours.
Sure Linda, one Papaya
Hi all,
Just got the link and I'm in. BTW, I'm in Spring Branch, too on Chatterton, so it looks like there'll be a good representation! I can start many cuttings. Thanks for the invite and I"m looking to meet new plant friends!
Margaret
Randy...hermaphrodite, papayas... I'd certainly appreciate that... We have baby papayas..I'm not sure what sex they are yet, This is my first year to grow papayas...so maybe you can give me some tips on how to identify their sex... They are about 3 inches tall, i have lost several, flooding. There are several that seem to be doing ok though.
Cheers
~We may need to do this at the arboretum... i wonder if they'd let us borrow a room. the one on memorial has a few meeting rooms...We used to use them for classrooms...
As far as I know you really can't tell until you see it bloom- you should then be able to tell by the way the bloom looks. I lucked out on the papayas as I just bought one from HEB and dried the seeds. It could be a hybrid, I'm not sure. I have seen the trees in Costa Rica as they have distinctly long stems to the leaves. I'm not sure where you got your seeds.
The one thing I did learn about the Papaya is they are very susceptible to root rot. My experinece again is mainly with this strain, although I am growing some from Hawaii which are male/female.
I'm not sure if this will help, but this is my "Papaya 101" Diary
http://davesgarden.com/journal/ed/
I will have a tree for you and some seeds.
My friend Wayne is friends with the Director at the Arboretum, I'll ask him if he can talk to her, or get a contact about borrowing a room if you would like.

Instead of our having to switch between this thread and the other one, couldn't we use just one or the other - either is ok w/me but sometimes I have trouble w/Roadrunner and it is difficult to go from one to the other? I would really rather we use the other thread if that is ok w/everyone. That way we will have the food, swaps, etc all on one thread.
Ann
I'm late to this thread, but I'm interested!
I've added you to the "attending" list, Ladyborg! Would you like to bring something for the potluck?
It would be complicated for Dave.. So, we have to agree to keep conversations on one thread and swaps and contributions on another thread. I vote to keep the July 21st thread for the trade lists/pot luck lists, as started. Keep this thread for general conversation.
Everybody CUT YOUR OWN general conversation posts from the other thread and move them to this one --
"Texas Gardening: Houston (and surrounding area) meetup/swap meet."
How about that?

ok all basic conversation part from the other thread i have erased/edited out...i went to edit my list to update iit and it told me i edit too much , so i'll have to fix that up tomorrow or somethin....
Crowelli, if this is growing too large to have at your house I'd be more than happy to start looking into other options. I just checked out this little Sugar Land park facility. It has an air conditioned room that fits up to 60 and it's $50/hour with a 3 hour minimum. It's $40/hour if booked by a resident living within the city limits but I'm outside the limits. They also have a covered pavillion (but no ac) for quite a bit cheaper. I've been to a few classes here and it's pretty comfortable.
Here's a site if anyone wants to look:
http://www.sugarlandtx.gov/parks_recreation/parks_facilities/facility_reservations/eldridge_park_conference.asp
I'm more than happy to browse other options we might have. There has to be other facilities for relatively cheap in the Houston area. Manic - did you check out Mercer by any chance?
Just let me know, Crowelli, and I'm happy to do a little research.
I haven't checked Mercer, I'm just back online, was very ill for a couple of days...cheers modern medicine... also waiting to see if randy's friend has responded...
I'll check when I can, probably beginning of next week
Manic - so sorry you were sick. Are ya feeling better? Take your time. If your not feeling well, I'll be happy to look in on it. Are there details of a particular room that need to be asked.
You have to tell me....have you made the chocolate dipped lemon balm? I'm anxious to know how it tastes.
Ohh...I just looked at the SL sight again and noticed we have to pay a security officer $25/hour for 3 hours? Ummmmm, hmmmmm. A security officer for a plant trade? Maybe I can call and explain and we might be able to get that waived (if we decide to go there).
I'm just worried about ya, Crowelli. If this is too much, say so and we can find a good spot. Everyone might have to chip in between $3-5.
Knolan, if there will be wine there, you will almost certainly have to have a security guard. That's usually what requires it.
I would be willing to check on some stuff too, but I just unexpectedly won a trip to London for 4 day, leaving this Saturday, can you believe it?
I can do some checking around - like on my community clubhouse - when I get back if y'all don't get it sorted out by then. You might also check City Hall; they sometimes have inexpensive rooms for rent.
I'm happy to pitch in if a fee becomes part of the deal!
Valerie
You won a trip to London? How wonderful!!!!!! Hope you have a great time! That's exciting.
wrote a msg and didn't hit send (I think) Anyway, I had said that I would be glad to go along w/what everyone else wants/needs to be done and $5/person isn't anything compared to what we would all gain in meeting friends and exchanging food and plants and having a good time.
Ann
I think we're still OK for here at the house. Last check, our number was 24. Our subdivision club house has a deposit and the only charge is $25.00, so that's still possible if we get too many for the house. I don't like that we'd only have a sink, no way to heat anything, but we could work around that. It's certainly cheap enough. I don't usually say much about my health, but I have lupus, an autoimmune disease similar to MS, so I'm very heat sensitive. (Live in a great place for that, huh?) It affects me neurologically and I loose motor control; can't walk, can't stand, etc. If we don't have an airconditioned facility, I can't do July outdoors. I mention this only because if y'all decide to have it at Mercer or a park, I don't want you to think I didn't come because I was ticked off at the change. It's just I can't handle the heat. If y'all decide to do that, it's OK, though.
How horrible for you crowelli! By all means let us meet in an air conditioned situation! None of us really likes or is really comfortable in a hot, hot environment.
Crowellli, I'm sorry to hear about your condition. I'm sure we're all happy to have this at your house so that you can be as comfortable as possible. We just don't want to make it be too much of an imposition, you know?
Besides, I'm a major advocate of A/C too, and I don't have any excuse but that I'm a wimp! I get all whiney and complainey if it's too hot.
So, Crowellli, you just pipe up if things start getting too much for your house and until then we'll assume we're on!
I'm with the gang! AC for certain!! Crowelli, you and I share the same disorder and I don't tolerate the heat either.
I mimic Digigirl's words.....just say if it gets too much. Until then, we go as planned.
Knolan, you have lupus???? It's about the biggest pain in the butt for a gardener, isn't it? No sun and no heat! I've told my docs that I draw the line at giving up gardening. I'll follow the rest of what they suggest, more or less, but I will not stop digging in the dirt. I did I.V. Cytoxan chemo for 15 months and am still on oral Imuran, but I'm doing really well right now, other than big as a house from steroids. Gardening and DGer's keep me sane. I'm so happy I found this site and I'm so looking forward to meeting all y'all.
Yes, Crowelli....diagnosed about 12 years ago. I'm on no medication at this time and feel blessed but it is a pain for us gardeners. I only garden in the evening once May hits. And I keep covered at all times. I'm white as a sheep and growing! LOL. I'm so glad you're doing okay now. We'll talk....can't wait to meet you!
And...after all of that ...if all else fails...the Jungle Heights is always open for trading...I think there is enough room inside and out. Boy it's been hot though....arrghh..
I am checking for the date 21 jul right?? I will be talking with Wayne tomorrow so correct me if this is wrong.
I certainly know what you mean when it comes to maladies. I've had both of my hips replaced and had to draw a line in the sand...and was out digging in the garden with crutches. One has to do what one has to do!
Rj
crow...i have lupus too...OMG...what a small world...and what a terrible disease we are sharign....
2 of my fav people...crow and knolan ...i can't believe we are all lupus diagnosed....it is the biggest pain; i was diagnosed in 97...; my 'symptom's' are fatique...extreme fatigue...dying fatigue...memory loss...whole body hurts....and thats on a good day..(grin); crow...i am like you...no one gets my gardening ...; in fact gardening is what helped me go into remission for a couple of years...but now i am back in the throws of the illness....never had to do chemo...only steriods...anti inflamitories steriods antiinflamitories....yah know that dance....so sorry both you have the same malady...it is not fun to live in pain....and i know i could be worse...
wow. I'll pay whatever you ask, just to meet you guys...
Sticks, you too? Wow.
Randy, I would have never in a million years guessed the hip replacement.
Jul. 21st is the set day for sure. Can't wait.
Gymgirl - ditto - we all want to meet you too.
I know..I would have been the village criple in another time! both hips!
Gosh, guys, I'm just a wimp in the heat. A limp wimp! How awful to have other health problems added to the heat problem. I admire you all.
Scratch two people from your list - it appears that DH and I will not be able to attend. Maybe you'll all be able to have it at the house, after all. Have fun!
Kristi - You were the only request I got, so I'll just mail them to you.
