Houston (and surrounding area) meetup/swap meet

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Here's the link to sign up, add plants available for trade and list anything you might like to bring in the way of food. You can also see what everyone else is bringing so you can determine if there's anything we're short of.

DiDi, will you edit your list on the other thread to add the latest additions to "who and what"? Put me down for ice/drinks/paper goods and plastic ware.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Gymgirl the exit is John Ralston/ Holland ave exit. We could meet there and I will take alol the coffee grounds and filters you can get your little hands on.

I don't think I read any one mention Mad Dog 20/20. LOL
Do you think my pastor would let ne have some communion cups for our taste test? If you think he would :O) I will give you his number. You ask and I will bring. ROTF. He is not a prude just would like to hear what he would say. :O) Not really as I don't think those are the right ones for tasting. Not sure I need any plants as I have a ga-zillion from CSRU I need to get in the ground.
But I always want more. I am a true plant-aholic.

I whine alot anyway...I just need the cheese to go with it. LOL

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I got quite a few from the roundup as well. Unfortunately I lost quite a few to the rains. So still up for some.

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8a)

Please add my name. May be tentative but will know as the date approaches.

Didigirl, and others, I've sent an email to the contact person for info on the club house. She should get back to me pretty quickly, but she may be out of town for the holiday weekend. Invariably, there'll be a small number who plan to attend and something will come up to derail the plan. If I don't hear back on the club house by Tuesday evening, I'll give her a call. I don't know what they have in the way of kitchen facilities, tables and chairs, so I've asked about that too. I know we'd all be more comfortable at the house unless the number just becomes unmanageable. I have a large kitchen that works well for buffet layout and I can seat 20 people without a problem. We have an empty bay in the garage where I thought we could set all the plants for trade, where they'd be out of the sun or rain. I will definitely check the clubhouse though, and if it suits our purpose, I'll go ahead and reserve it. Better safe than sorry. It looks like more people are interested than I would have thought, and I'm really glad. I've only been on DG a little less than a year and haven't met anyone face to face yet, but looking forward to it. I'm planning on adding a cider baked ham in the food department and maybe someone else can throw in some potato salad???? Anyone looking for an easy food item can add an assortment of bread/rolls.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Crowelli - if we don't have sign up for those items, I'll happily bring those too. It's wonderful of you to do all of this!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Make my salad a potato salad. :-) Thanks for organizing this, crowelli!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Crowellli, you're providing too much! Right now, you've said you'll provide a ham, drinks, and all the paper plates, etc. How about I will bring the drinks along with dessert (which is cheap and easy)? Or would you rather I brought the paper goods? You need to pass something off to someone else - it's not fair for you to be providing so much.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't mind at all. I'm happy to do it because I'm looking forward to meeting everyone. I will definitely do the drinks and ice because that's so difficult to haul around. You can leave me in for anything that's missing. If someone else wants to do the paper stuff, that'll work. I make a killer cider baked ham, though, so I'll still do that. I'm sure we won't be short of food from the sounds of it. We'll make a last check in a few days before so we can verify that everyone is still able to make it and confirm what they're bringing so if something's short we can reassign.

Mystic, this all still working for you and you'll be able to make it? I still feel kinda' bad 'cause I hijacked your party!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

How about I bring a brisket, at least - then there's two main dishes - and Crowelli you can do a smaller ham?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Clubhouse availability.... I've gotten the info back on the club house. It's available, but I don't think it'll suit our purpose. There's a sink, but that's it, no fridge, no microwave. They have some tables and chairs, but not that many. So, we're going to proceed with the plan here at the house. That way we have a kitchen if anything needs to be warmed up and if the crowd is too big, we can overflow onto the patio. If anyone overheats, they can have a dunk in the pool!

Bookworm, a brisket sounds good to me.

Houston, TX(Zone 10a)

Wow, Ya'll.. I've been checking in on the thread with the list.. Just popped back in here for the heck of it. Thank you sooo much Crowelli for grabbing the ball and running! Shall I bring some lawnchairs? I bet we all have a few we could bring... Also I might could bring some peppermint tea, lol all these gardeners and not one mention of herbal tea yet? how funny - and Anne of course you are welcome, maybe we can do our trade there instead of the hibiscus festivall... which btw..when is that, that sounds like a load of fun too, we should totally let eachother know when fun stuff like this comes up too...

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

It's June 10th, I'll find the address and d mail you. It's in Bellaire I know that. I'm driving to Hammond, La to pick up my future former sister in law (she gets custody of me in the divorce, lol) she'll be staying with me for a week. So she and my bf will be going with me. I'm really looking forward to the show and meeting you.

Anne

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Manic, I can seat about 20 people inside without a problem. They'll be strug out from dining room to kitchen and den, but at least a seated, airconditioned place to have lunch. If our numbers get above 20 a few lawn chairs would be a good idea. I only have 4 outdoor chairs, but do have a 3 car garage with one bay empty where we can set plants out of the sun. I'll save you some basil seed. I love that stuff! Do you want seed from the new Black Pearl pepper too. The leaves are black and the peppers are perfectly round, marble sized balls. They start out green, turn dark purple, then red. Beautiful plant.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Crowelli,
Sit the plants in the sun and the PEOPLE in the garage! I'll bring my portable lawn chair.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Gymgirl, how funny! Haven't y'all figured out yet that I do everything backwards! I'm acutally hoping nobody has to sit in the garage, unless this thing grows way bigger than it is now. Be forewarned, if that happens, people arriving with anything chocolate get first dibs on the airconditioned space!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Just a sneaky reminder that I'll be bringing homemade chocolate eclairs in exchange for plants....... ;P

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Digigirl's trying to bribe her way into some cool air!

Cypress, TX(Zone 9a)

I would strongly suggest taking any of Crowelli seeds for the black pearl you can get. I have it and I love it! It really is a beautiful plant. I have it in a container with other full sun plants and I am thinking of putting it by itself instead. The other plants kinda take away from it's beauty. Or better yet, I might just get another one!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey, Didi, it works for me. I can be had, but I'd rather be bought!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Crowellli, can I have some of those Black Pearl seeds?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Didi, I'll save some seeds for you. The peppers are sprouting again in the beds where they were last year, so maybe it'll be big enough by July that you can tell what it looks like. I might even have more seed by then, but not sure.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I've been wanting an ornamental pepper - they look so cool! And that one sounds really good. Do you ever eat the peppers, or is it just for looks?

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Crowellli,
I'd like some Black Pearl seeds, too, please. Thank you.

Yes we do eat the peppers. I cook every day and makes lots of ethnic food such as Mexican and Indian that use lots of spices and peppers. These peppers are really good ones, very hot, and I also use them to make pepper sauce. I'll gather up all the seeds I have and anyone who wants them can have them.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Yeyyyyy!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

yes crowelli--they are hot as all get out aren't they? ;)

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Crowelli - did I mention that I'll be bringing chocolate candy bars?

Cypress, TX(Zone 9a)

You do eat them? I was under the impression they were strictly for ornamental purposes. That is so cool. Do you collect the seeds from the peppers themselves? If so, I can collect some too! I have a plant and it is a good size and I noticed yesterday there were a lot of red peppers, which they are ripe right? If you tell me how you collect the seed I can try it tonight. Do you have to let them dry?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Shortstuff, you can collect the peppers to eat at any stage from green onwards. They are "ripe" and at their hottest when they are dark purple. From there they go to red and start drying out a bit. If it's not too wet from rain and humidity, they can dry on the plant. Otherwise, collect a few at the wrinkled red stage and the seeds will be mature. Law them on a paper towel somewhere and let them continue to dry out completely. The seeds are then viable and you can save them for next spring or put another batch on to sprout.

DMJ: Deb, are you going to make it to our west Houston meet/trade? I can't remember if you've said so or not. I hope you can make it and I'll show you how great the LA Iris advice you gave me worked out. They've multiplied like crazy, so much so that I'll have some to share!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Can I trade you something for a little of the LA iris?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Knolan, I thought I already sent a reply to this, but I don't see it, so don't know if I did or not. (Lord, a mind is a terrible thing to lose!). I've got you down for some LA Iris. I'd love some of your pink salvia, or anything pink for that matter, but you can have some of the iris regardless.

I also have seeds of vitex available if anyone wants some and will attempt to root a cutting of it or dwarf salmon oleander on request.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Gotcha down for some pink salvia and anything I can find that's pink in my yard!
