Interest in a Cut Flower/Floral Design forum?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

May we call it Cutting Flowers and Floral arranging both....it really started out as a thread for cutting flowers????? Don't they go well together???

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Gessiegail
Sounds good to me, seeing that I don't have any flowers.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

so, how you get your arranging done??? Do you go out and buy plants??? I loved your foliage arrangement.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I agree, Cut flower gardening, processing, and arranging should all fall under this possible new forum.

tabasco, I thought you'd like this idea, but I can't take credit- it was gessiegail's idea. Having done it for a living for so long I thought of it as work before, now I've been away from it long enough its fun again. Love that Art in Bloom exhibit, such a good idea.

Gessiegail, they're all from my garden. I just started playing with trimmings left over from gardening last week and then i sacraficed some nicer foilage , but only ones that are not in eyesight.
I showed a friend and he told me about oasis, the green foam stuff so i got some and im going to take them apart and redo them with the oasis to hold the leaves in just the right place. The best thing is that the heavier tropical leaves last a really long time in a vase so once i have the bones of the display i can add and delete some of the smaller ones that don't last so long . I have to go home to Ireland on Tuesday so maybe there will be some elements still presentable when i get back. I don't get many flowers so im going to buy some ginger and other tropical stems from the grocery store to add a little color. I like doing the simple single structural ones best, I'm never happy with the bigger ones I think I need some training and then i end up adding to much. Ah well it's all fun and helping me through a difficult time right now.

Oh my goodness....I had no idea you were from Ireland....is that your permanent home or going home to visit family??? I am so sorry you are having a hard time....remember the most important thing...and that is: if God takes you to it, He will pull you through it....

Ireland is where i'm from left there at 25, and have been living here for 13, so im going home just to see family and then will go to Romania for a few days to visit an old Irish friend who relocated there a few years ago. I will become a US citizen later this year. Some one told me today that 'pain and joy go together, there cannot be one without the other. The wooden flute that brings us such joy comes from the same tree that endured the axe'. It really resonated with me , and thanks for your good vibes.

Hey tabasco, I really liked the bouquet/picture combo. I told my DH "Look, a person made this floral arrangement to match this artwork" and he said "Maybe they painted the picture to match the bouquet!" LOL

LOTS of freeze damage here...sobbing....sniff...it will be a while before I post another nice bouquet.

bummer, Toxicodendron....this is the coldest winter we have had since 1967.....

Piedmont, MO(Zone 6a)

I wonder how many thousands of disgusted gardeners there are today?

celt, sorry you are having a difficult time right now. Hope your trip to Ireland will be good. I have always wanted to go to Ireland, but just never got there.

toxi, what a lovely spring bouquet. Anything with purple always catches my attention. Sorry about your cold weather.

Tabasco, Thanks for posting the very attractive flowers and artwork from Cincy.

We luckily had a very nice weather Easter weekend. Our warmest day of the year was Sat. 84 degrees in the valley and 78 here. Was windy and not as warm today. I have just about finished planting my shrub and tree order from FF.

WE are sitting in zone 9 in south Texas and it was close to freezing last night!! Go figure....my poor plants for this zone may not make it and my cutting flowers in the garden are smashed big time (as in till under) with rain and 55 mph winds last week.....

South Carolina surely didn't fare very well! Easter was colder than Christmas. Everything in my yard got fried, except for the few things that I managed to cover, though even some of them had leaves that burned. The bearded and Dutch irises that were in full bloom all have broken necks and the azeleas that were blooming fuller than they have in years are brown. Ah, but it is Easter and I am reminded of Habakkuk's canticle: "though the fig tree blossom not nor fruit be on the vines,Though the yield of the olive fail...Yet will I rejoice..."

Toxicodendron, you asked about the palm-like foliage in my December arrangement. I always thought it was papyrus, but checked to be sure before answering you and discovered that it's not papyrus at all, but Cyperus involucratus or umbrella palm. Actually I think umbrella sedge might be more accurate. It's a tender perennial and was still beautiful just before Christmas. Just a few fronds had begun to emerge this spring, but they got fried, too.

Celt, I love your leafy arrangements. They are truly works of art. Hope you'll keep in touch even as you travel in Ireland and send us some pictures of the plants of Ireland. May your trip be a special time of healing for you.

My parents, then my brother and his wife, and then I had to go to Ireland....just to see what Mayo county is.....beautiful countryside....what a heritage....

The friend im visiting in Romania is from Castlebar, Co. Mayo. We met in the early 90s when she and I both lived in Galway for a couple of years. The West is truely the most picturesque part of the country, the North the most dramatic the South the most charming and of course the East is the coolest.

Just incase someone may be paying a visit to Dublin. the Royal Botanic Gardens really is worth a visit. Established in 1795 They have just reinvested and refurbished the greenhouses to there original 1840s splendor. It's where i first saw Vireyas in person ( a minor obsession of mine) .

Thank's Dave.
I use DG not only to share and have fun but also as a way to document 'How my garden grows' when things bloom etc. Now that I've started arranging displays I can document my progress.

Thanks
