A Herman Hermit's reference? P-l-e-a-z-e-!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I read about Herman's Hermits in history class.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

ummmmm ..... let the sociologist intervene a bit. all the indications are (1) men thrive under marriage. men who are married live longer, healthier lives. (2) women thrive as singles - they live healthier, longer lives. (3) women might live even longer and healthier lives if they could get wives.

I once asked my husband if he would consider bigamy, as it seemed that were I to marry again, I would end up being the wife to two men, while if I could convince my husband to be bigamist, I could at least be the senior wife and be able to take advantage of the labour (domestic, child care, emotional) of the 2nd wife.

My poor husband didn't know whether I was serious or not - but he was truly appalled at the suggestion! LOL

(he once told me he wished to have six kids - I told him to have as many as he wanted, just to not bring them home. Two were enough for me!)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Never heard that women thrive as singles. Every report I have seen / heard / read was that married people - both men and women - live longer and healthier lives than unmarried ones.

I once asked my wife about my possibly taking a second. She said - "That's bigamy!" I responded, "It's big of me too. Let's be big about it". (famous Groucho Marx line) However, just the thought of TWO mothers - in - law...

Wanted to share my little giggle w/all of you.....
My DD moved to Florida a little over a year ago, and has had some severe bouts of homesickness. I suggested a kitten to keep her company as she has always had animals here at home. After coming home for Christmas and being around the 4 dogs, cat and fish....she decided to get a pet. She got a kitten 8-10 weeks ago and has been alot happier, so her roommate went out and got a fish last week. Baaaaaaaaad choice!!! It seems "Baby" wants to have a lunch date w/the fish! DD cancelled the lunch date by putting fish in roomies room for the day!!

See:

Bernard, Jessie. 1982 "The Future of Marriage" 2nd Ed. New Haven: Yale University Press.

The conclusion of the research is that married women have poorer mental health and a more passive attitude towards life than single women. Married men generally live longer, and report being happier than single men. Generally, after divorce, men are more eager than women to find a new partner.

Bernard concluded that one way a man can assure long life, health, and happiness is to marry a woman well socialized to devote her life to taking care of him and providing the security of a well-ordered home.

Many women are lucky in that their DH do not expect the wife to focus exclusively on his needs. I am one of them. My DH is much more attentive of my needs than vice versa. :-)

Of course, it has been 20 years since the original research, but current research indicates that even today, men benefit more from wedlock.

I am just reporting the research . . . please don't be offended. :-)

No offense taken at all. Takes a LOT more than that to offend me. It's just not what I have seen:

Hey Victor, I absolutely agree - as social animals we are not meant to live in social isolation. However, controlling for that variable, the research indicates that men benefit from marriage more than women.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Seandor, that seems pretty obvious to me just from my own 38 years of research ;0) yes, I have been married (to the same man) for 38.5 years. works for us!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Yeah . . . women seem to get this right away LOL :-) I have been married to my sweetie for almost 30 years - I think I am the lucky one.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I got to the Herman Hermits and totally cracked up! You people are so quick witted! I love that!

Seandor, Victorgardener, ROTFL!!

Pixie, love that picture!

I'm lucky enough to have a DH with more of his Mom in him than his Dad. He's kind, MOM, smart, BOTH, stubborn, DAD. I used to be a witch at times. MOM. Change in attitude, MYSELF!

Grampapa, same story here. There were hundreds coming into Cone Marsh's conservation area Saturday and hardly any open water. I just took in all the honking. Made me smile.

Seandor, not to nit-pick, but in your first post you said that single women live healthier, longer lives. That is not the case, as those links, (and countless other reports) show. You moved the goalposts in your last post! Now you are saying men get MORE benefit. I never mentioned who gets more. Women MUST get more - they usually live longer!

Billy, there was a report out just the other day relating women's temper to genetics!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

According to Bernard's research single women lived longer than married women. Married men live longer than single men. Historically, men lived longer than women, since so many women died during or shortly after childbirth.

Cheers,
Seandor :-)

Let's hope NE Forum garden freaks live longer and healthier than everyone!!! Of course it goes without saying that our gardens are better than those in the OTHER regions.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Of course! That's what we are here for - mutual support, encouragement, and sympathy when things don't go exactly as planned. This is the best group ever :-)

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

This transplant to the NE agrees :))

(Zone 4a)

My funny dh says that women live longer cause men can only take so much of them LOL LOL They want to be the first to go LOL He cracks me up!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Billy, I have actually redrawn my U.S. maps so IA and WI (for AL) are now snugly in the upper right hand portion.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

:)) I'm honored!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

more redistricting!

I seem to recall that with married couples the woman lives longer so she can get the last word in.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Some great wisdom on the subject of marriage:

"They say that when a man holds a woman's hand before marriage, it is love; after marriage it is self-defense."

"Behind every great man,
there is a surprised woman."

"Man is incomplete until he is married.
Then he is finished."

"When a newly married man looks happy, we know why.
But when a ten-year married man looks happy, we wonder why."

"After a quarrel, a husband said to his wife, "You know, I was a fool when I married you."
She replied, "Yes, dear, but I was in love and didn't notice."

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

A couple from church was celebrating 50 years of marriage and the priest gave them praise at the end of mass. Jokingly the priest asked the woman if she had ever thought of divorce in those 50 years. With out batting an eye she replied " Divorce, never! Murder....many times!!" I almost peed my pants.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Victorgardener, that's hilarious!!

Pixie, ROTFL!

(Zone 4a)

Gosh you guys kill me - I am laughing so hard!

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Pixie, do you know if that poor traumatized fish is still swimming? Cute.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

OK - kinda off the topic - but - my boss announced today that his wife had been gone all week and he was very proud that he had only used one glass while she was gone. He put his dirty clothes in the washer every night and washed everything together this morning. The only glitch was that he found huge lump of rock hard chicken pot pie that he guessed slid off his plate onto the floor Tuesday night. This is the man who sat at lunch one day trying to figure out if he had yet drunk the equivalent of a swimming pool full of beer in his lifetime. (The answer was - not yet.) That chicken pie thing would never happen at MY house - the cats would find it and eat it before it was even cold!

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

If I didn't eat a pot pie, I think I would know it. ROTFL!!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yankee, did he clean THE glass with the clothes??

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I have always benefitted with women because the standards for men are so low. I, for one, believe most women would benefit from having a wife.

I didn't expect a sociology lesson. I knew of Seandor's research but not of Victor's. That is great! Maybe we (men) are becoming less toxic. Unlike all the highly evolved guys on DG, there are still a lot of controlling jerks out there. But we gardners are more in touch with our feminine side.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I communicate with my feminine side daily. But then I lower the thermostat.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Victor, If you had a feminine side, you would never have had to get married!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes I would - it would have married my wife's masculine side.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

We are heading beyond the limits of DG decorum!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hey, is there a reason the post times are shown as four hours earlier than actual???
