Kassia:
It's called warm weather, Kassia... pretty much year-round warm weather. Something prolly Massachusetts wouldn't know about.
Also, most of California is in a permanent drought, so a watered garden looks like a set dinner table to many wild creatures.

3rd Annual SO CAL RU MAY 19, 07
I don't have gophers at my house in Orange, CA
Rusty did you go on that scary road that goes from flagstaff to Tuba City Az., the one with all the crosses with reflectors on them? The road freaks me out, it is more dangerous I think having so many everywhere. they want you to know how dangerous the road is but reality is, you are counting and looking at them, they are everywhere. Milk of magnesia. hmmmm
I driving slowly and very carefully what I looking at.... Only I hate is big RIG TRUCKDRIVER IS HECK!
type and drive carefully. lol
Here in MA we have tons of squirrels and chipmonks.... (I call them Chip and Dale!!!!) they are cute but better not eat my lillies... my neighbor has a mole(?) in his garden... I hope he stays there...
Well, pooh, TwinLakes, you can't join our club, then! lol
I was talking with my cousin in NJ today and we were comparing garden critters. She has voles, but was amazed when I told her the damage gophers do here. Yep, we pay for our weather, that's true.
Kassia, I really do hope we have good weather for your visit. You will think you're in heaven. Not that MA doesn't have its own charms, I'm really referring to the combination of good weather, Don's & Pam's wonderful ranch, and all the great people anxious to meet you and show you a good time. You'll be queen for the day!
Kathleen
Arlene,
We don't have them here in Santa Ana, surrounded by neighbors and pavement -- but we sure did in Anaheim Hills, when there was no pavement between us and Cleveland Natl Forest (not that we were close to CNF, but there was no pavement between). We had deer and coyote, rabbits, possums, mice; quail and roadrunners, a snake, and GOPHERS. Sightings of mountain lion (not by us). The roadrunners were great; they used to sit up on the hill and *wait* for me to throw them snails from the garden; they would pick them up and rap them on a rock to get rid of the shell.
Here we do have occasional possums and one summer racoons, but not the others... yet anyway.

Take pics and drive carefully, LOL!!!
Here in Long Beach we have possums and raccoons...armies of them!
Hey SoCal....this thread is getting long...how about a new one? Jo
Jo, thanks for the reminder. I was going to do that soon, and I kept forgetting. :-)
It's done, here it is http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/705884/
Donna
hiya guys....
Dr. Trotter here.....yes, it's me, the doctor of having the Trots.....lol. So please allow me to make my dirty...er...duty...clean...ahem....clear...
I've been here at DG and pretty much kept the whole secret of my being a gardening author and one-time syndicated gardening columnist to a very small and trusted group of friends. Well now the secret (I'm thinking the books were a secret all along since so few copies sold...lol) is out and I'm not just good ol' drdon anymore. I'm drdon, the writer of really mediocre books as well......lol. I'll be happy to inscribe anyone's book who has been foolish enough with their money to buy a copy and be eternally grateful to them for supporting my publishers wine drinking habit...lol, and will supply my own pen and ink in order to validate how grateful I am.
Please come in spite of my scribblings in print as both Pam and I are just so excited that so many of our DG pals and soon-to-be pals will be coming again and/or for the first time.
The gardens here are beginning to show some signs of spring recovery from our rather unwelcome freezes this winter, and it looks like there will be more than just a few hundred rose varieties and species to gander at while communing with the best gardeners in the country, as so many of our DG friends have shown themselves to be. It will be a celebration of flowers, leaves, stems, seeds, friends, and yes, a whole bunch of time can be spent making fun of me and my rather inconsequential foray into the world of authorship....lol.
best to all,
don
Well....I'm glad you cleared that up!! LOL Jo
The tiger is out of the cage now boy. We didn`t know you were a celebrity and in the UN, My gosh you should feel proud. Everyone dreams of writing a book and you did and got it published. Bravo Dr. Don

We`ll make him famous yet?

Smile!
This is off-topic but I wanted to post here so it wouldn't be a surpise when I bagan to take up a collection at the RU.....
I guess most of you are aware that our dear friend, and fellow gardener, djm906/Doris Morey passed away last week.
She was a sweet lady and loved DG very much....she was in different hospitals for over a year.
Some of us thought it would be a nice gesture to buy something for her church in her memory....so I have asked someone from each RU scheduled bewteen now and the ones on June 9th to take up a collection to help with this cost.
Doris' daughter is momcat/Debbie on DG also.
If you would like to help in this endeavor, I will accept your help on May 19th.
Thank you so much.
Jo
Jo, did you realize you posted this to the first thread, not the continuation (Part 2)?
