I have a ponytail too Pod. It was nearly this big when I got it this summer but I am so very proud to be it's owner.
Proud Plant Parents, share your plant photos here...
wow! I wonder how long before mine looks like that planted inground.
I've seen some pics vossner, of I think it was palmbob's...HUGE!! They were TREES!
I just recently transplanted mine. I'm aiming for a tree. see pic Jan 26 11:30p
I love the ponytails. That is what got me to start this thread. I saw Nans' thread about the variegated one. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/687097/
Tonight, I saw Andys' had broken out of its' chains. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/687861/
I also have a weakness for other succulents. This was id'd as a Gasteraloe ~ prettier than it sounds...
Andy's plant's way cool. 20+ years til mine looks like a tree, huh?
How old is your ponytail Vossner?
Pod, I have put in a request on the identification forum. Hopefully someone there will give us an idea. If you'd like some of it, I'll be happy to send you some. I don't remember where I got this plant. I know I've had it for a couple of years. I don't think it goes to seed, but if I remember right, when the flowers are spent, they look kind of wispy like a dandelion. If that's the seeds, I'll save some. I'm so new to looking for seeds on any of my plants. This vine doesn't die back at all.
Those French Hollyhocks are beautiful Pod. Are they butterfly plants, by chance? I'm gearing towards LOTS of butterfly plants this year. Lots of folks have sent me seeds for a big variety of flowers for them. When I know that I won't have to be worried about a freeze sneaking up on me, I'll be planting those seeds.
Your Gasteraloe is really pretty. It looks like a cross between an aloe and a bromeliad.
Thanks Vossner for ID'ing my Amaryllis. I've really enjoyed that one and hope that it puts out those beautiful blooms again for me this year.
Connie, I love that peacock fern. I hope it gets those blue iridescent leaves like your other one had.
It's late now, but I'll post this pic of Jacobina before I go to bed. I love this plant and it really made me smile when it bloomed this year. This was the ONE plant that I thought I'd lost when hurricane Rita blew through my back yard. Everything else got beat up, but survived. I had piled as many plants in containers close to my back fence thinking that the fence would break any wind force. I had NO IDEA that we'd get as much wind as we did... 123 mph according to the news.
I couldn't FIND the Jacobina at first because it was sitting close to my bleeding heart plant and I kept on thinking that the Jacobina was the Bleeding Heart because the leaves looked similar to me. Then one day I started seeing the buds come up on it. I was dancing all over the back yard! This past year, I went to a garage sale and a lady had them growing in the ground close to her fence. They were at LEAST 5 ft. tall! Mine isn't all that tall, but I'm just as proud of it, as though it were. :-)
Janet
UQT ~ the foliage is beautiful but the bloom is magnificent on your Jacobina! Are you going to plant it in ground? Sounds like it would do well in your area in ground.
The french hollyhock don't grow tall and I keep these in a pot. I have seen the small early summer butterflys on them ~ sorry don't know the butterfly ids'. I would be interested in either seeds or a start of your unusual vine and have hollyhock seeds to share... mooch, mooch, mooch...
I love these guys ~ the blackberry lily...
Good News! The folks on the ID forum nailed the ID of my vine. Senecio macroglossus
I've added it to the Plant Files. This is my first time ever to do that. Here is a link to the entry I added for more information about it: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/152360/index.html
Pod, please Dmail me with an address and I'll be happy to share some cuttings and seeds with you. I'm on the same side of Texas as you are, so it should do very well for you also. Looks like it's not very common, according to what I read about it.
I may put the Jacobina in the ground when Spring gets here. At the moment, my plants in containers are "stored" on the deck and everything's covered with plastic (with the exception of the roof). I peek in there now and then. God's doing an awesome job of watering for me since everything still looks good. I haven't watered any of those plants since the beginning of December.
Your Lilies are beautiful. I love that color combination.
OK so, what will be next.....
This is my Yellow Shrimp plant. Hummingbirds seem to enjoy the nectar from this plant.
Janet
Here's another Yellow plant that I have. It's called Cassia, or Candlestick Plant. My hubby brought this one home to me that he'd dug up from some customer's house (with permission, of course). It didn't bloom the first year, but the 2nd year, it went wild! By the time the seed pods came out, it was almost 8 ft. tall. I've seen these almost 20 ft. tall in real ritzy neighborhoods. This is a host plant for Sulphur butterflies/caterpillars. I've seen many butterflies, but didn't see any caterpillars on them this past year.
Janet
This plant is called a Basket Plant. I started with ONE of these about 18 years ago. At that time, my sister Diana told me that this was a Dutchman's Pipe. It wasn't until I joined Dave's that I found out the true name for it. Connie did some research and let me know that it is a Basket Plant.
Each of the "hangy down" plants can be removed and planted to start a new plant. This plant blooms with the prettiest little stalks of tiny white flowers (inset).
Is your Callesia fragrans in ground? I kept mine in a hanging basket and it overwhelmed me with plantlets...
Podster, I have Paint Shop Pro, but you could use any photo editing software. I take my pictures, then upload them to my computer. I choose not to use the Kodak photo editing software that came with the camera, although you certainly could. I am more familiar with my PSP, so that's what I use. You can do a ton of different things...I just love it! I got it when I was really into website design and making graphics, but now I just use it for my pictures. Tamara
UQT, thanks for sharing (I especially like the Jacobina!)....it's interesting to see pics from a different zone. We don't have any of those here in Ohio (except maybe as a houseplant?). It's so amazing how many different kinds of plants/flowers there are in the world! Tamara
Vossner, I am trying a couple of the hollyhocks...like 'Zebrina' here in zone 9..........I love them, too but they grew so beautifully in zone 8...zone 9 is pushing it for these great hollyhocks...
Pod, I want to weigh in on the photo editing software question. I use Photofiltre, share ware available from www. photofiltre.com. For the most part, it works just like Paint Shop Pro (which I used until it expired on me). I'm a self-taught photo editor. This program is very easy to use and does 99% of everything I've ever asked it to.
I'm extremely cheap when it comes to paying for software. Photofiltre is free. Can't get much cheaper than that. I've used it for several years to edit literally 10,000+ photos. Selling on ebay, I'd put sometimes 10-15 photos in my listings. Adding the text is a breeze. I wouldn't go into the photo business with this program, but for the "average joe", it's da bomb!
This is my Pitcher Plant
Janet
Zone5girl, You have beautiful plants and photos. Why don't you list all these in a plant journal with the photos, ID and info on plants. I always love to tour journals and see what grows in different places too...
I am a camera/computer novice. The camera I got makes life easy to post their photos but I've never taken the time to learn more. Maybe one day....
This was a passalong plant from an older friend... Amaryllis, I think. He called it a Crinum.
Thanks Pod. Yeah, I'm guilty of spending an entire day watching something bloom... camera in hand. I didn't used to be that way.... then I got hooked on Dave's! HAHAHAHA Thanks to Dave's, I have one heckuva collection of photos of just about every plant in my yard.
This photo shows how big that Spider Lily is. It was transplanted from a friends house. It bloomed that first year. The next year, there were 2 more plants on the other side of my yard. This will be it's 3rd year at my house. It's hard to tell how long it was growing at Linda's house.
Here's one of the most beautiful roses I have ever tried to kill! ::(
When we moved into our new house these long-stemmed roses were planted too close to the driveway. I wanted to transplant them to a different location, dug them and pormptly forgot about it. Ran accross it a few weeks later and I thought it was a gonner. After much TLC, it took a great liking to it's new home and has (for more than four year now) happily grown and bloomed such beautiful roses that I have been able to make many arrangements out of them.
They are so beautiful!
WOW! That is stunning Dawn! Gorgeous! I hope my Clematis does that.
I agree Connie. Those colors are awesome Dawn!
That could be YOUR front porch Connie. Plant some vines in the ground under there.
oooooooooo Even the colors would look great. Might even give the front door a little privacy from that side. I'll watch and see how much sun I get there. That's the west side. There is the two story beside me so I probably get just evening sun.
I'm learning so much! Keep this thread going and the photos coming, please. Thanks, Podster!
Deborah♥
Dawn, we could spend hours on your front porch, it is gorgeous. I also like the way you put lattice to hold the climbing vines. Neat idea...
that porch is aweome.
Unique, on post #3140381 above, what is the name of the plant to the RIGHT of the crinum, looks like either a fern or a succulent or some sort planted in a light colored pot. Interesting leaves. Also, I like your crinum because of its stiff upward leaves. I really don't like the ones with long sweeping strap leaves, I call them the "bad hair day" crinums (but the flowers are wonderful, I must admit)
this is a very good thread, pod.
Good Morning Vossner,
The plant you are asking about is called
Ric Rac Orchid Cactus, Fishbone Cactus
Selenicereus anthonyanus
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/62665/index.html
thank you. I love it. shoud do well for me if it does well for you. I need to hunt it down. I have a noid that somebody called a ric-rac but it doesn't look like yours. I will try to post a pic later. I love diff. shape leaves.
top of the am to you and everybody else!
I'd be happy to send you some of it. I also like unusual leaves and blooms.
I have the majority of my plants listed in my DIARY here at Dave's. Everything is listed by where it is in the yard because that's how I have my photos sorted on my computer. Hopefully this link will work to get you to the Diary.
http://davesgarden.com/journal/
If anyone reading this thread sees anything they'd like to try out, please just let me know via Dmail with your address. A lot of my plants in containers are "stuffed" on the deck and covered by plastic. But as soon as they come out, I'll be happy to send out any requests.
Here's another of my favorites. I found this little planter at the Goodwill in San Antonio during Hurricane Rita evacuation. Paid 50 cents for him. There was a broken place on the top edge. I didn't care because I knew I'd be planting him some "hair". :-)
thanks. Maybe we can talk about a fun trade shortly. Pls, pls, post this pic on the container forum. I have one to share also, but later. It's too cold outside for pic-taking.
This is a collage of photo showing my Sago Palm frond opening. My hubby dug this sago up from my brother in laws house a year ago. BIL's SO didn't like it. Aaaawwwww What's Not to like??? I love these plants. That one would have cost about $75 had we bought it new, which we wouldn't have. I love free plants!
These photo start 4/23/06 and end 5/15/06. I was sitting about 30 ft. away when I took each of these photos with my Sony DSC-H1 camera. I was just learning how to use the camera and thought this would be a great way to see improvements in my photos.
Janet
Dawn, love your porch! It's just beautiful!
Pod--I actually do have my journal here on DG. I have one from 2005, one from 2006, and one for this year --not all the entries have pics, but some do. I'll be better with that this year. Last year, we had record high temps and I pretty much abandoned the garden in July. I hope this year is more normal, so I can keep the pests, diseases and weeds from taking over. Tamara
Thanks everyone! I love my porch, too! :) Unfortunately the East side is about the only side that I have any success getting anything to grow on. The South and West get a lot of sun and full exposure to wind. I've not devoted as much time to gardening in past years as I would like to, but now that the kids are grown and it's just hubby and me I would LOVE to learn more about what to do with the space and soil (mostly clay) that I have. I'm hoping to gather information from members here (speak up any and everyone!) and I'm going to contact our master gardeners' association to see what information I can get, too!
This is the front porch, which faces the South. It only has a few bushes in the raised beds and some (un-named) daylilies growing amongst the weeds!
Thanks again for your kind words!
~Dawn~
Ahhhh, Clay! That is the bane of the gardeners existence. I suspect what you will hear is improve your soil. Composted leaves, peat moss, compost, grass clippings. Keep after it... when we are 93 years old, it will be just right. Phew!
I love your Sago palm and can't believe how many new fronds it was putting on in your photo. One reference says... a happy Sago will put on one new frond in a year. Mine only adds around 6 a year and I am delighted. I run my hands over them with delight. When they get older, they are bristley and not fun to pet on... and mine needs to be in ground but I just haven't decided where...
