Hey Dave47 - I have DSL! I just don't have much time left over to watch TV and I am too darn cheap to pay for it. So I can't join your "interesting group" of people who have rabbit ears and dial-up. (I got DSL because a lightening strike fried the motherboard of my PC and the repair guy never did get the modum working correctly - but I am glad I did.) I also don't have a cell phone - ditto on the too cheap, and only have a CD player because it came with the car! Ditto with the DVD player - it came with the PC. Simple is good (and cheap).
Welcome Harper. Be prepared for a heaping helping of good-natured foolishness from this group!
Fresh Pot of Coffee!
Hi, Harper. I have no idea when the NE roundup is held. I've only been part of this fun group of garden maniacs for a few months myself. I took a quick look for Mahopac and see you're at the other end of the state, just as I suspected. I'm between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. But at least we're in the same zone LOL
And I live about 7 miles east of Buffalo.
There was a Northeast RoundUp at the end of June, I believe. I found this thread of pictures from it. I don't think any of these folks visit this forum. I could be wrong. I don't read every thread.
Gram, if there were a get-together in this area, I'll bet even Al would come.
I just assumed they would always have it somewhere on the east coast. we're not, strictly speaking, in the northeast. for some odd reason, we (Buffalo area) fall into mid-Atlantic, probably because of the lake conditions. and most everybody would have a long haul to get here.
Buffalo in Mid-Atlantic? Very strange.
But,Buffalo as the pizza capitol is way too hard for me. I've heard people from NY City argue that their pizza is better than New Haven's but never Buffalo. Thems' is fightin word in these parts. Our old brick-oven "apizza" parlours in New Haven have pictures of Frank Sinatra, Bill Clinton, etc., eating in them. I don't think a single chain pizza place has managed to remain open in the greater New Haven area because people know what pizza is supposed to taste like.
Maybe we should have taste testing roundups at both locations. ;)
Yankee, I meant interesting in a good way! DSL & rabbit ears is even better. I like the contrast.
Dave
Hi Harper! welcome here... this is a wonderful group of people... sometimes they are too fast for me but I am sticking around!
Gram, I hope we really make it... May or June sounds great ... we will be able to see your garden and the minis.... I am so excited!!! them maybe we can all see each others garden.... oh well, mine is not that great... I have to do a lot of planting...
Gram have you protected your minis yet??? do I have to wait for a real frost??? it was 70 today and it will be 60 till sunday... I have tons of pine needles around the minis... is that a bad thing???
I have never had pizza in New Haven, New York City or Buffallo... I am willing to try .... it took me 5 years to really like pizza, dunkin donuts coffee and chinese food... I can count on my fingers how many times I have eaten a donut in my over 20 years in the US... but I can eat pizza everyday, and I can drink dunkin donuts coffee but I still like Brazilian coffee better... specially done the old way ... like boiling the water.... and very strong....
but I am open! when are we going to try pizza in New Haven and NYC????
last time I went to New Haven was to go to Ikea... now, thank God I have one closer to Framingham... right next to Andy's neck of the woods...
I don't know if we have a host for NY City, but I would be happy to get folks down here for New Haven. Maybe a walking tour of Yale and pizza at Pepe's. (by the way, the authentic word really is apizza)
Speaking of New Haven has anyone heard from Meg? She was a regular conributer from New haven on our forum but I haven't heard from her in months.
I didn't go but there was a RoundUp in Springfield MA last June.
Dave you are rigth... no NYC host for pizza... so New Haven here we go!!!
Dave maybe you are the middle point between us...
I happen to be married to a Sicilian (well, his dad was Calabrese, but we don't speak of that LOL). if you denigrate the pizza in Buffalo, I may have to have a 'conversation' with 'Uncle Sal', IF you know what I mean (I would be making some kind of hand gesture here if I knew how, but you guys couldn't see it anyways). my in-laws never bought pizza in their lives.
Sicilian pizza!? Its Neapolitan apizza that rules! That's Napledons like all 4 of my grandparents!
I bet your husband uses onions in his tomatoe sauce. Or does he call it gravy?
What am I saying??!! I better remove my address from the exchange before Uncle Sal sends the wiseguys!
Dave46
I don't know..but I hear NY pizza is worth it's weight in gold. Something to do with the water??? Same goes for the bagels
gravy is a brown thing. and there is no reason to say 'tomato' sauce. there is no other kind. of course it has onions. and I believe Neapolitan is some kind of ice cream? Uncle Sal knows where you live Dave (smiiiiile)
Anita, that water comes right out of the East river. not sure it's gold, but it's weighed down with something ;0)
While we're on the subject of pizza, I don't recommend the NYC pizza. It's just not like it used to be. 20 years ago, you could get a fantastic slice. Now, it's only "eh". Let's go to New Haven instead! Oh, and NYC water comes from where I live. We're surrounded by NYC watershed reservoirs. It's strictly protected - and beautiful!
Gram, I know I'm far from Buffalo, but at least I'm not in the eastern tip of Long Island! I wonder why they call you Mid-Atlantic. We're closer to the Atlantic than you are... why don't they call Virginia Mid-Atlantic? Who figures this stuff out?
Hi Kassia! You're right - these guys are fast! I checked out your 'what's growing' website, and Wow! You say you've only been gardening since April '06 and you have flowers like that? Nice going! I like your turtles too!
Thanks for the welcome's everyone!
Harper
I have heard that NYCers think they have the best bagels. That could be true. Some places' bagels are sort of like thick bread, not chewy, yeasty like bagels ought to be. But has anyone ever made bagels at home? I have. They come out really yummy. I'll share the recipe with anyone who wants to try it.
Oh, and Harper (welcome!), I have wondered about that too. Mid-Atlantic, I mean. I would love to know why we are called that. Are you sure, gram?

Nancy - I think I am midwestern atlantic then. Snow here today - so beautiful........not.
Hi Harper - welcome aboard! *****ship of fools**
Nancy - I'd like to give the bagel recipe a shot
Anita - I'll go bagel hunting with you, I have a blaze orange bagel suit and everything.

that's how you get the hole in the middle - good guess
got the hiccups Al?
no - why?
saved for future use

hey...no take backs!
Anita, "give the bagel recipe a shot"......"that's how they get the hole in the middle"
I'll send it tonight in dmail. Gotta go to the nursing home now. Ruth is sick today.
Thanks for the welcomes Nancy and Al. I've had some pretty darn good bagels in NYC, but then again, I don't think I've ever had a bagel outside of NYC.... We're hunting bagels now, are we? You all must have excellent aim. I have yet to see a bagel without a hole smack dab in the middle.
I'm in for New Haven! Although it doesn't seem fair that it is only a short drive (or train ride) for me.
Ssssshh! Yankee Cat! It's a lot closer for me too!
I won't even argue about the best bagels being from NYC. I have a step cousin-in-law (is there such a thing) who always brings bagels when she comes to visit and I've never had any as good around here.
I missed something here earlier, didn't I?
edit to add: I'm not sure where I first saw the thing about NY being mid-Atlantic, but here's a link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-Atlantic_States

Well, ok. I can see their point. Although only a tiny percentage of NY State can be considered Atlantic Coastline.
Edit: Gram, that's what happens when you walk away from this forum for a minute. It takes on a whole new direction sometimes.

Dave,
I don't think I ever saw "Napledons" in writing. Very funny. I'm half; the other half was from Benevento and Sorrento. I don't know of anyplace besides CT where there's an "a" before pizza.
Gram,
I really had an Uncle Sal, but he wasn't connected.
Harper,
Welcome! You're right, most NYC pizza isn't as good as it was 20 years ago, but what is? NYC water doesn't taste as good as it did 20 years ago either, but please keep sending it down. (I'm from Brooklyn.)
Loretta
lol... oh I love all these carbs and I have no italians in my family... and I just had pizza... from Pizzaria Uno... I love deep dish pizza from UNO... I had a pizza craving since we started this talk about best pizza!!!! my goodness you guys are highly influencial people!
love bagels too by the way... best one I had was still hot blueberry bagel from Dukin Donuts... nothing exciting to you guys I guess but the just baked bagel was great...
I vote for New Haven... meet you guys there for pizza!!!!
Thanks for looking at my blog Harper... for real, this was my first year... I am afraid of what I might become! I think eventually I will have no grass... not that I am worried about that... but I just moved a year ago ... the closing was on november 16th... I am refinancing already... so I can get some money to buy more roses.... lol... well, really want a greenhouse so I can garden all year round... the turtles are really cute!
Gram, I understand that mid-atlantic idea better with a map to look at. Duh! Thanks! For some reason, I blipped out of my mind that even thought Niagara Falls is very far away, it's still part of NY State, which is still attached to the Atlantic Ocean! I think I'm going to bonk myself on the head now.... LOL
Loretta, No problem continuing to send water your way. I will try to clean it up some, but the darn politicians want more development around here. I'll do my best! LOL
Kassia, Yeah, your blog was great. I just moved here two years ago. This is my first piece of dirt of my very own. I've gone crazy, but my garden doesn't look nearly as great as yours! Hmmmm refinancing already? Wonder if I can do that... This house is emptying my pocket deeply and quickly.
Gram, I trump your Wikipedia with my google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Northeast+US&btnG=Google+Search
You are a northeasterner through and through.
Loretta, I have no idea how to really spell Napledon. I just gave it my best shot. Pretty sure that apizza is the Italian word for pie for both tomatoe pie or others (anyone else familiar with apizza grain and apizza gain? 2 Easter traditonal pies.)
This message was edited Nov 11, 2006 1:57 AM
Ooooh, Dave! Even better!
Dave wins and we NY'ers remain northeasterners! lots of folks of Italian heritage here, too. cool. I am Italian only by close association LOL. now I want Easter pie
ps I wasn't leaving anyway ;0)
No one asked me - but I like thin crust pizza (roman style) - plain cheese - nothing to hide the taste! (I worked for years in an Italian Restaurant going through college.) Edited to say worked . . . in California - don't want anyone's Uncle Sal paying me a visit! LOL

there's some guys here from Chicago (now I'll have Unkie Sal after me) that make a stuffed pizza. love it with ricotta, onions & sausage (and, of course, mozzerella)..they put the sauce on the top after. that's a meal. one slice and i'm done.
you guys, I am having pizza for breakfast... left overs... I can have it cold it still taste pretty good to me!!! yeah, I am weird... have you guys ever made your own pizza? well, my mother and younger sister are weird too... they make pizza and now my mom is bringing a special oven so she can really bake the right way... not that I think there is a wrong way...
how hard is to make bagels??? never tryed... but I have a bread machine!!!! will that work???
Gram, I'm glad. I would have faked the map to keep you (in spite of your pizza shortcomings)
Did you mean a calzone? It's like an inverted pizza.
I've made pizza a few times, bagels once but that was under supervision.
New Haven pizza is thin crust. Sicilian is thick and I believe Chicago has a deep dish style (never had it).
Anyway, It sounds like Kassia, Yankeecat and Harper are willing to meet in NH for pizza. Anyone else?
deep dish is goood....
Dave, any good ice cream place there????
