Who's got the biggest?

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Beautiful plants. How will you over winter them? Move them into the house and keep them growing or let them go dormant?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

228??!!? That a lot of EE's! Yes, where will they go? Do you have a greenhouse? The pics are great.. I'm not seeing Fontanesii or huge flowers... Linda do you see them?

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

no photos. There were some problems yesterday, I had problems posting. Rox, will you try again to post, I would love to see them. My fontanesii is still small but I'm looking forward to see what it will do next year.

I have a room with a Jacuzzi, floor-to-ceiling windows on sides. This adjoins a large room with floor-to-ceiling windows on 2 sides.

So not as good as a greenhouse, but close. The trick is keeping up the humidity in the winter.

Thanks for posting again. I wouldn't mind spending the winter in your jacuzzi room with all the windows.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I need a couple of those rooms with windows like that! Rox, I have a Thai Giant, it was new this spring... it's grown very well, have you had any experience with them? I need to do something with it before frost. Do you think I could treat it like other colocasias and with hold water, let the leaves die back and store bulb (is there one?) or store in dry pot it's in? I really don't have room for it except maybe in my moderately lit 50-60 degree basement.... any ideas? thx

Athens, OH

I don't have a Thai giant. But I will watch the thread to see who else chimes in. I am interested in the response.

I asked Brian Williams and he said he would probably treat it like his "regular" gigantias, which is mulch heavily and wait for Spring growth, BUT he is a zone higher than me and it won't work here. It's in a pot and huge.... IF it forms a tuber or bulb, I could just keep it dry over winter, but if not..........maybe I'll email Plant delight and see if they can help.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Aunt B, is Thai Giant an Alocasia? I store my A.macrorrhiza dry in the pot; that would probably work well for your giant.

I think Brian has been in Florida, so I'm sure he'll chime in and advise when he returns.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Brian was indeed in FL.
I just saw a note on Aroid-l mentioning him helping out at the Aroid show.

Don't know if it will help but I winter stored my A.macrorrhiza and odora bare root on the GH floor. Just sprayed them when they started looking a bit shriveled.

Well I am back from my Florida trip. I got a ton of new things from the show. The Thai giant is a form of Colocasia Gigantea which grows extremely large. I will probably be gone a bit longer now. The day I came home we had a death in the family and it seems I will be heading up to chicago. So if you dont hear much from me it is because I am out of town again. It has been a very rough week. Talk at you guys soon.

Athens, OH

Brian-
So sorry to hear about the death in the family.
Looking forward to when you get back. We definitely want to see pictures of the new acquisitions!

Looks good AuntB how long that tape measure out??

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I'm calling it 41 inches... count the ft marks on the tape, maybe they are hard to see.....remember it's a baby in Kansas ..... .. . . :)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I think this is the biggest I'll see this season from mine, right at 4'. This is the tallest I've ever had them (regular green Colocosia esculenta), which makes me happy. This year the area was experimental for my tropicals, but next year I can't wait to go nuts with it!

Hey Neal! Is that you? *waving*

I am enjoying this thread so much, almost as nice to see the peeps as it is to see the ears. I'm esp. impressed with Chele's 18" tall daughter, what a doll! Hee hee. My Black Magic is in a pot. Should I cut it down or what to do to over-winter it indoors? TIA

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Hey there Vicki! Yep, that's me, but this is Dumbo!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Wow, that's a big flower. Which EE is that?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Wow! Big Ears, Neal, Good thing you have long, pretty hair to cover em' up.... (I'm just jealous cause yours is longer than mine- ears and hair)! That's a very big bloom Tobee. Hope the measuring pics keep rolling in... just love seeing everyone's big ears.

Kellyville, OK(Zone 7a)

My 4ft leaf has already got up and gone during our heat wave. I never did get help to get a clear pic of the ear and the tape. I really had to work to try and save enough to show that I do still have some ears. I planted only three bulbs in this spot and they multiplied to the point of requiring water several times a day. It was a little cooler and they have bounced back a little, but nothing like they were. Now it's back in the mid to upper 90's. Oh the whimpers of a want-a-be gardener. John

My Royal Hilos slowed down when the cool weather set in. :( I did find a much larger, less obliging model. LOL

These started as one, 1 gallon plant. That is a 15 gallon pot with the mama in it. I took off 4-5 side shoots. Royal Hilo is a happy multiplier!
