Hi,
Ok I will ask a stupid question... I love all of your pictures and next year want to plant some EE... Now dont laugh ok??? I had a few little EE's this year but did not know they came in big sizes, so my question is this where do you order or get these from? Do you grow kinda like a banana tree? do you grow from seeds?
Thanks for any help... I am very new to Daves and I ask allot of questions...
Susan
Susan,
The only stupid questions are the ones that are not asked. :)
You can find the plain green ears at Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, Kmart, etc. in the spring. Many of them also now carry the black ones and the black ones with the green veins. There are tons of online sources! You can also find the plain green and Xanthosoma in the Chinese/Asian/ethnic markets sold as taro/melanga.
Welcome to DG! Nice to meet you.
Hi,
Thank you so much for your post... So you mean the little EE that I are in pots grow to be this big? I took them in right before the frost and what should I do with the two roots that I have? do I try to keep alive one has nothing on it the other has one green leaf... I thought they were special ones? I have never seen that big around here in Va. or maybe never noticed them... Thanks so much for you answer.. Please tell me more... :-) Thanks for the welcome... There are soooo many forums to see..LOL
Susan
Susan,
I haven't even been to half the forums myself, and I've been a member more than 1/2 a year now! ;)
It's easier to take it slowly... for example, learn about bulbs before buying! I've spent alot of money on bulbs, only to have most die, because I didn't know my weather conditions and soil prevent me from growing many of them.
(Some bulbs have a dormancy period where they like to be kept dry in the summer, which alot of websites won't tell you.) Luckily, I can assure you that EEs do not need any dry period that I know of!
And I know because I'm surrounded by them. ;)
When they are in ideal conditions, they can grow to be as big as the pics I posted just above... they love the heat, humidity and the wet conditions they get down here.
I'm not sure what they particularly need to grow, but there's alot of wonderful people here who would know, and be glad to help you.

I've been here close to 6 years and don't even try to keep up with all the forums anymore. LOL I think there were about 10 when I joined!
So long as they have plenty of heat and light, they can take a fair amount of water unless they are some of the specialty ones that like to dry out some. Those will rot when cool or overly wet. Some you can actually grow in water when it's warm!
Do you know your growing zone? I'm going to take a wild guess you are in or near zone6 (you can add that on your page where you put in your city and state) and if so, you have to bring them in and store them or keep them well lit and a bit more dry.
Do you have pictures of the ones you are growing?
Susan Welcome!
They come in all sizes from 10" to 30'.
Some live in Water, some in near desert conditions and everything in between.
I agree w/ Gina take your time learn what you can .
I'd wait until late Spring until getting anymore.
Some of us winter over FAR too many and even the experienced growers loose a few in the Winter.
As to getting more.... we beg, borrow, buy, trade and on occasionally 'borrow' cuttings.
There will be plenty to be had by the time you can put them out.
Check out the regional Forums for sure.
I'd say the Mid-Atlantic Gardening Forum would apply to you.
This will be people who live and garden nearest you.
Don't know if they have a Roundup (Gathering) but there's nothing like attending one.
Ric
Hi,
Ok I am really confused here... You mean to say that all EE plants that you can buy say at a HD or Lowes in my case can grow this big and is not just a tiny plant? I had two green ones and also a red one ... I just have two left that I brought in that were the greens... These are in some dirt but not allot so should I repot with more soil?
Thank you for telling how to add my zone I have done so now... :-) I am in 7
Susan
They do not ALL get that big. Some stay smaller or grow more tall and narrow. Some just get huge. LOL In zone 7, you should be able to leave some types in the ground and mulch them. You might want to start doing some searching on Alocasia, Colocasia and Xanthosoma and see what you find out. :) www.Agristarts.com has great pictures but not much info.
Whoops! Changed that to a link. ;)

Sharon here's a link from a few years ago showing the most common (mostly) EE's for home growers.

Sorry, Susan! I may have added to the confusion. I think it transmits through the electrical currents, lol.
I didn't know that Alocasias & Colocasias were also considered EEs.
Are you thinking of Caladiums, Susan? They look just like EEs & are in the same family, but I don't know if they are also nicknamed EEs...

Gina,
You did not confuse me for I was born that way... :-) Yes those are them.. When we went to store they had no lable on them and we asked what they were we were told they were EE so thats what I thought I had.. You live and learn..
I will read more about the real EE for I thought I had EE and why did they not get big...LOLOLOLOLOLOL Hopefully the next ones I buy will be the real thing... Thank you all so much...
Susan
Susan, remember... caladiums are beautiful planted beneath elephant ears :)
lol, Susan :) You learn not to completely trust plant nurseries or labels... especially employees!
My grandmother's yard is wild, and there are many of the big green EEs always sprouting up. Whenever you are ready for one or two EEs, either I or someone else here would be happy to send some for postage or trade like Ric (henry10) mentioned earlier.

Susan
It makes a big difference also putting them in the ground compared to what they do in a pot. My EE's just went to mush last Tue. night. So our growing season on the whole is longer than yours but there are alot of big EE's from your zone so don't give up.
