I believe I have seen this Royal Hilo colocasia it is a new form out of Hawaii. A botanist was doing hybrid work on breeding colocasias and did thousands of hybrids. His work produced some very interesting colorful forms. This is what I believe a hybrid between Fontinesii and a pink stem form

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

You are so full of it. LOL

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Umm Ric is full of it! LOL I didn't refresh. LOL

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

lol you go girl!!!! You outdid me, I was going to take a picture of the red stemmed for comparison, but got too lazy out there-and too hot.

Brian, is that the colocasia guy that has been working with Tony Avent?? Tony has a beautiful new Illustris coming out soon-the difference is mainly in the new leaf-hard to describe, but its beautiful-and the leaves are thicker.

Louisville, KY

Yes he has been working with Tony. Tony showed me photos of many of the new forms but I am not allowed to show them. Their was at least 9 forms I found very interesting and have drooled over. I think they plan to release them slowely each year.

Here is a pic of one of my new hybrids it gets very dark black leaves with ruffles in the leaves. The leaf comes out bluish green and turns darker. It maybe hardy here. This is different than the other forms I have shown first time showing this one.

Thanks for the show, it's pretty, I like the bluish!

You think we don't recongize the arm of a Ken doll??? Come on!

Louisville, KY

Thats one hairy Ken Doll LOL!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

These guys really spread theirselves around the yard. There are lots of these planted in between the greenhouse and the fence- they get so big you can walk underneath them with ease. I had to thin them out, and moved this one to the front garden -

Yes the pot is buried in the ground,it's at least 7ft maybe 8 ft tall.
It's the Alocasia Macrorrhiza.
Portdora,was what I thought it was,thanks Brian!
From the looks of your pots,I'd better repot mine up!!!
Chele,I'll bet she's a spitting image of what you looked like, except I'll bet you were dirtier !!!

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

lol she still is dirtier!!!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

rj, those are all beauties. My little plumbea has smooth leaves, not puckery like yours.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

rj, Love the hilo beauty! "they get so big you can walk under them with ease" :P Nice!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

RJ I know they say everything in Texas is bigger. But your EE's are really proving it. They are gorgeous, and they are to die for. I love them.

I have the alocasia plumbea but they aren't anywhere near the size of yours, and I beleive mine are smooth like LindaSC said hers were, is there more then one kind of them.

Linda

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I guess when the leaves start to get a little bigger then they start to get a little crinkly.

Full shot of them. I have two planted in there.

Last year when I dug them up I really don't remember what I did with them. I thought I had planted them in a pot to keep in the GH. Around the middle of April I noticed a brug that I had planted in a pot had a couple of leaves spouting in the soil. I left them there then I realized what they were and dug them up and put them in the flower bet next to my Peaches & Cream and they are doing find. Doing much better since a branch on the P&C broke off now they get more sun. Then about a month ago I noticed another one is growing in the same pot with the brug that these were in. I still have no ideal how they got in the pot with the brug. But what a nice surprise.

Just guessing here, but sometimes when I'm potting things up and there are pots around "with nothing growing in them" I use those pots to add soil to the potted up one. Maybe you had a pot of dormant plumbea that you added to the brug.

Mine still looks smooth, but it is very young and maybe with time it will pucker, I like the puckered look better.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Linda you could be correct on that, cause I do use up the soil in pots that aren't in use. And that is what could have happen. At the beginning of summer when I was getting ready to put out all my EE's I looked and looked for my Plumbea and couldn't find it. I really wasn't sure what was growing in the pot with the brug, at first I thought it was a weed. But as it got a little bigger then it came to me what it looked like. I tell you people getting older isn't all it is cracked up to be. I forget so much. Oh well that is another sorry somewhere down the road.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I guess my ears should be burning. LOL Was busy weeding about 600 feet of daylily beds and look what I come back too. ;)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

"I guess my ears should be burning." I thought you were talking bout your elephant ears at first... (snicker) My gosh 600 ft? Get those little munchkins to help ya.. Hope you're having a great day.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks -
I can't remember, but I think it was Linda (2pugdogs) that I sent some Plumbeas last year. They do get much bigger in the ground, are heat loving, and actually prefer a good dose of sun daily.
I think you sent me a musa banana.....I thought it had croaked, but I always recycle the soil to the garden beds, in this case to the ginger beds- despite the shaded area, this un-ginger like plant sprouted up..it was the musa...! I relocated it to the front.
Aunt B- for the record-- I hope your not thinking it's the hilo beauties I can walk under...they are the jumbo ee's in the picts...I'm lucky if the hilos get 15 inches.!
I have really been enjoying the EE's, and trying to increase the collection. The plumbea is bloombing and I have Brians tutorial saved on propagating.
I just added those varigated ee's , disney or something like that. My friends at zone9tropicals gave it to me last week..They conveniently live around the corner for me!

Brian,

I am wondering wondering if you have a consolation prize for the smallest EE?

I throw my hat into the ring with this photo:

Is this one smaller?

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Well they are all lovely .. and quite large.. Good work out there..
when I entered my info to DG .. I listed myself as 7B for zone.. but I was at a site that gave zones by ZipCode and they had me as a zone 6 here in NYC..so I don't know really what zone I am in... I'd like to post a non comercial EE growing here in Brooklyn.. looks to be about 48" long..as I see the measurements are being made from an upper lobe to the tip.. hard to get both ends in..andstill see the numbes on a small tape... and in the photo the tape was streached tighe... where the leaf really dipped in the center... so actual measurement would...if taken properly...be a bit over 48"..and I guess there's a month to go for the close of the contest... soI'l l have to post one later also...
All the best there ... Gordon

No prizes for smallest EEs LOL it was a good try but I have what seems like thousands that might win that award. The seedlings I have would take the cake for sure leaves about as big as a pencil eraser.
As for pictures for the winner to win I have to see a good shot of the plant with the ruler at the tip of one lobe all the way to the bottom tip of the leave. Not to be rude but if you just show the tip with the ruler at 110 inches I can't give a prize for that. I wont give a prize for older photos or photos of someone elses plants. Sorry these are the rules and I make them up as I go LOL.
I hope to soon have the photo my father was talking about of the common Colocasia esculenta grown by his friend that was 10 feet tall with 4to 6 foot leaves. He apparently has photos people completely hidden behind the leaf besides their head and him self smoking his pipe next to his prized gigantic plant.

Louisville, KY

Gordon some impressive looking Colocasias. I think next season if you able to put out one large tuber and keep off most the pups you could get a very massive sized Colocasias. Good luck.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow what a view Gordon
