Miracle Whip or Mayonnaise?

Orangeburg, SC

DUKES!!!!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Dukes?

;-)

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I love Miracle Whip!

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

I was once working a second shift job, not more than ten years ago. The only other tech on that shift was considerably younger than myself. One evening I had brought way more food than required to get me through the evening & we both built sandwiches out of it. When I asked him if he needed any Mayonnaise, he said "I've never been into fat in a jar". Fine I used it anyways, and I still live on.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

dyson- ha.
Ever tried dippinf fries into mayo? I used to think that was so gross, until I tried it in Canada.
My mom uses (and DH sometimes) butter on a sandwich which is gross to me, even though I love butter on other things, mainly warm. I just get a mental picture of cold slippery butter...

Olympia, WA

sallyg - butter isn't necessary on a "sammich" unless it is w/ fresh bread and peanut butter - then you need big gobs of butter ------- yummmmmmmmmmmmmy!!!!!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

How funny this thread is going today.

After work, I remembered we were out of mayo, so I stopped by
the store. Kraft and Miracle Whip. No Hellmans.

Store #2. Kraft and Miracle Whip. No Hellmans.
Store #3. Kraft and Miracle Whip. No Hellmans.

Kraft and Miracle Whip? Ugh, what is the deal?

I went home, discouraged. Called hubby, he said he would stop
by yet another store on the way home.

Kid you not, hubby brought home the biggest jug of Hellman's I've ever seen!

Whooooo hooooooooooooo!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

no Hellmans? an evil conspiracy going on.
I agree butter is good with peanut buttter! I have done that. also PB and bacon, PB and bologna...ggee how much fat can I get between two pieces of bread??

Olympia, WA

Wuvie - what is w/ the Hellman's? - I mean - out West, I can't even imagine a store not carrying the Hellman's clone - BestFoods - so I envision the same mayo imperative across the land. I wonder why there is a run on this precious food - maybe someone has figured out how to process it into fuel for the automobile!!!!!!

Mequon, WI(Zone 4b)

Mayonnaise on jello - now that is yummy!!

Can't stand miracle whip. For some weird reason, people in Wisconsin think the two are interchangeable.

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

I did not think they were even in the same food group.

Mequon, WI(Zone 4b)

Is miracle whip even a food??

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

LOL!

Sally, very good combinations you have there!

The butter and peanut butter seem to go well together. You don't find
yourself choking it down.

Same goes for grilled cheese sandwiches. A slice of tomato in between
and you don't have to chew, chew, choke and swallow a lump of cheesy
bread. We'll have to wait until the tomato scare is over, or grow our own.
Hmm. Grilled green tomato and cheese, perhaps? No sign of mature tomatoes
in our garden just yet.

My grilled cheese go down slick - no lumps of cheese as it is all melted into that seductive status - but I DO make a dipping sauce of mayo and ketchup ---------mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

As for Miracle Whip in a restaurant I doubt many use it. It was twice what Mayo was by the gallon 30 years ago.
I have noticed that 'diet' anything is going to be heavy on the vinegar. I therefore don't ask for diet dressing.
I think restaurants cut many dressings with vinegar anyhow.
Just trying to stretch the $.
;)

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Tir, I'm glad you revived this. I was strictly MW, but like you, had a sandwich someone made with with Hellmans. Yum! So.... now I have squeeze bottle of Hellmans in the fridge. I will only buy Hellmans brand name tho.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

jeannie, actually for the last 8 years I thought MW and Mayo were interchangable! I'm not a terribly picky eater and can stomach something I might not make myself all for the sake of eating out or eating amongst friends or at a potluck (ie eating margarine when at home I'd eat real butter let's say).

but after years of having either or----trying a salad that had WAY to much MW dressing---and would have been to much if it'd been mayo to IMO, well then I just knew there WAS a difference after that.

however, it's the ingredients list that changed my mind about them. hellmans please.

billy, thank-you!

Westland, MI

Miracle Whip for tuna macaroni salad and mayo for potato salad.

Miracle whip for everything else.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Mayo and dill relish!

No Miracle Whip or sweet relish pleeez....too sweet!

BTW we have iced coffee everywhere here, even at McD and Jack in the Box now.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Ugh, yes, what IS it with the sweet relish?! I come to the south and find more brands of that than in dill, the staple in our house!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Anyone have the grilled bun/mustard/sour pickle hamburger habit?
That combo with onion, lettace and tomato is my lifetime favorite.
We always had to slice the sour pickles. They never came that way.
All my uncles worked at the "Quick Lunch" in Plainview, Texas
That's how they made their hamburgers.
When my DM was growing up they could buy a sack of 20 hamburgers for $1.(1930s) from the Quick Lunch.
;)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

My childhood hamburger heaven was an Alaska Stand burger from 9th street stand in Ocean City MD, circa early 70's. Nothin but cheese and black pepper--or was that to cover the fly specks?

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I have eaten some magnificent hamburgers. About the best food ever invented.
;)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

1/3 lb, 80-85 percent lean, natural from Harford Co MD (just found a source) on the home grill, med-well, tomato, redonion rings, MAYO, lettuce, toasted kaiser. That would do me. and a beer. Can you be here by next Friday? LOL

Olympia, WA

Best hamburger I have EVER eaten was from an outdoor grill at the end of the tram ride up to the top of Sandia Peak in Albuquerque, NM - came w/ California green chilies and jack cheese - oh, that was a real treat. No matter how I have tried, I can't quite capture that taste here at home. I suppose the ambiance had a whole lot to do w/ it. Did it have mayo? Frankly, my dear, I have no clue.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

To capture that great flavor from your New Mexico hamburger try this.
Get some fresh Anaheim Chillies and lay them on your cooking burner. Char and then peel the burnt skin off. Carefully slit down one side and scrape off seeds. Now put that on a hamburger that has a slice of Monterey Jack cheese, some mustard and maybe some sliced onion, tomato, and lettuce.
You can also char on the grill. Some char a peck or two and freeze before skining etc. Beware these Green Chillies are addicting.
Sorry to get off topic.

M-I-R-A-C-L-E W-H-I-P for me!!! Yum!! :-D ......On ham or turkey sandwiches, hamburgers, ground bologna w/sweet relish, etc!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Quoting:
ground bologna w/sweet relish, etc!
Do tell please.
;)

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

Buy a big chunck or large link of bologna, sometimes you can buy it already ground up, but if it's not, grind it up with a meat grinder, add sweet relish, and miracle whip -- amounts are all to taste so add ingredients slowly and keep testing. Put bologna/relish/miracle whip mixture on toast or bread for a sandwich. :) Yum! It's one of my DH's favorites!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

It sounds good.
I love taking bologna and mmiracle whio and put a layer of potato chips on my sandwich.
';)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

the bologna stuff sounds kinda liked the deviled ham in cans.
Peanut butter and potato chips-yum.

So who volunteers to contact Hellman's and Miracle Whip people and get us all coupons for all this publicity?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

I left the room on the mention of bologna. LOL.

No hot dogs, no bologna, no Spam, no potted meat, no deviled ham,
no sausage. UGH!

I'll take the peanut butter and potato chips, though.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I just bought my first jar of dill relish.

Anyone who takes the dill pickles off their hamburger, puts them on mine! I think we have hamburgers sometimes because I'm hungry for pickles. I know we have tacos because I crave salsa.

ROTFL! We do deserve coupons!

I buy all beef hot dogs. Pork aren't as good. No Spam ever!

Good thing DH is out warming up yesterdays chicken on the grill right now because I'm hungry. Think I'll set the table!

Later!!

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

I always get extra pickles and I was thinking of this thread the other day, because I was a Hellman's all the way person until I tested both because of Wuvie, and came to the conclusion that Kraft is better on sandwiches and Hellman's better in salads. I didn't read the ingredients to compare the two, but now that Tir has pointed it out, I will.

Miracle Whip is nasty, imho. It will never be intentionally in my fridge and it would make a sandwich or salad inedible for me.
:-)

Oh, last year I tried dipping potatoes in mayo with garlic in it - it was good!

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

We grew up with Miracle Whip, never had mayo in the fridge at all. Consequently we all (the kids) thought we hated mayo. Now I use nothing but Hellmans mayo except for..don't gross out...Miracle Whip and Cottage Cheese with pear slices. I STILL love that but that's the only thing. One sister still uses MW exclusively

My DH brought home Kraft mayo just once. I took it back and got the real thing! LOL

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Cottage Cheese? I have not thought of that in awhile - my bad. Cottage Cheese & fruit for dinner tonight.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I make my own mayo with pasteurized eggs, but when in a pinch I'm casting my vote with Jumpin4Joy...Dukes has it hands down. Hellman's is a near second. Miracle Whip is a cultural phenom, but not mine. I get it (sort of). I'm not a snob about any of these products, but having grown up in a family where both parents were career foodies. Well...what can I say? They thought mayo, and every other condiment in a jar, was gross altogether. :) I was a late starter with prepared foods and ultimately went back to my roots.

Ellenboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Miracle Whip all the way. My son says he hates the stuff and wont eat anything but Dukes. But I heard him telling a friend that his mom makes the best potatoe salad! Well if he only knew its all from the MW jar. and it's even better because there is a discount store here that sells it, the large jar goes for 50 cents.... yee ha

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Cottage cheese and tomato sandwiches. Or, forget the bread. No mayo's this time, just a lot of black pepper on mine.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Was parked outside the grocery waiting for my brother yesterday and overheard two clerks on break discussing this same topic!
Also that mayo has gottten expensive- has it? I haven't seen Hellmans go on sale for a long time- think I pd 3.79 for 30 oz.
