Miracle Whip or Mayonnaise?

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Opps...my bad....LOL, I MEANT to say I buy the GENERIC version of SCOTT'S!!! ROFL. I use name brand titles just so people know what I'm talking about. The generic I thought was a tad thicker than the Scott's, I did try it once.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I don't eat miracle whip or mayonnaise, except in Chicken or Tuna Salad. No way would I spead it on a sandwich, or eat it out of the jar. I just don't like it.

Rockford, IL(Zone 4b)

We're Hellman's all the way here, and real butter, not margarine. I like Bays english muffins, and the Sarah Lee bagels.

There are a lot of things that generics work great for - rice, pasta, canned tomato, etc. I have noticed the difference between the generic canned veggies and the name brand - the corn is smaller and not as sweet, and the same with the peas. For an extra 10 cents a can, to me it's worth it to have what I like.

No generic TP - sorry (ouch)

Cheap shampoo, laundry detergent, etc are fine.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Butter, Brummel and Brown!

No generic TP for me either.

Tide Coldwater Fresh Scent smells nice.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow, we are all passionate about Mayo. ;) Hellman's here!! Miracle whip is disgusting. Actually, I like Mustard & Mayo on my sandwiches, in my tuna, in my potato salad. If there is only MW or mustard, I go for mustard only, but will use a light coating of MW if it's the only choice.

I say the same thing as someone else here said "Miracle Whip is Dressing!!" anytime my step-kids ask where the Mayo is and then proceed to tell me, "no, not that" when I point to the Hellman's. Just like they ask for the butter when they want "Country Crock". I tell them Country Crock is not butter, it's Margerine (double yuck!). Though as a kid, my mom bought mostly Margerine, I now know the heaven that butter is. I love to splurge on french butter every once in a while, but usually it's GV butter. I do like to have the new Land O Lakes Butter Spread with Canola oil on hand though because it's soft and ready for making Cinammon Toast and stuff. At $1.75 for a little tub that lasts me 3 weeks, it's not too pricey. It's not french butter, but not nearly as icky as Margerine.

MW & Peanut Butter! I can't imagine! I use to love Mayo & Cheese sandwiches as a kid though. Lots of Hellmans, White Bread and Cheddar Cheese sliced thick. :) Other weird food combos - Tortilla chips and butter is one. I still eat that as an afternoon snack though I have to limit myself or I make myself sick. :-) One snack as a kid was Saltines with Country Crock & and a sprinkling of Parmesan from a can. LOL Haven't had that in years. My mom started me on that one!

I buy a mixture of generic and brand name. Just depends and just have to try them, because some are the same, some are different. I have to have Hellman's, but Ketchup is Great Value, Mustard is GV. I have to have Green Giant canned corn, Swanson's Low Sodium Chicken Broth. All saltines, wheat thins, Vanilla Wafers are GV. Orange Juice is Tropicana! Yogurt is Yoplait (GV tastes like Dannon). 2% Milk is also GV, though I don't like some grocery store brands. My husband drinks Soy Milk though and prefers 8th Continent over the Walmart generic. As far as grocery store brand Milk, my mom works for Borden's and the milk at a couple local Grocery Store's (Minyard's, Sack-n-Save) come from Borden.

Aimee, I also use the All Free and Clear from Sam's. It is the cheapest, but also the safest for me since I have sensitive skin. I also think it works great! I can tell the difference in Detergents, and pricier does not equal better. Last time I tried Tide, it did not clean nearly as well as All. One way to boost generic soap is to add borax to the wash though! Paper Towels and Toilet paper, I like the nice stuff and buy the large packages from Sam's. :)

Compton, AR(Zone 6a)

Add me to the Miracle Whip fans. I *will* settle for the store brand of salad dressing. I don't like Mayonaise, too salty and too sour/tart.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Wow, there's so much here to respond to...MW or Best Foods mayo, use both depending on what it's with. When I was a kid and there was nothing else I'd eat catsup or mayo sandwiches. Tried KK doughnuts when they opened one in San Diego to see what all the fuss was about....vote in our family was that they were awful, but I do love hot doughnuts, used to go by the local bakery every morning at 8:13 on the way to school for hot doughnuts. Whoever mentioned the cow corneas in hot dogs just ruined me for life and I loved hot dogs! I'd spent so many years not letting anyone tell me what is in them, sob. Deanna, my husband is from Davenport and he says no way on the bananas w/Miracle Whip and chopped peanuts, in fact, he won't eat MW OR mayo. 4paws, a big yes on the bread and butter, I could live on that. Raymond's Sourdough Dutch Crunch out of San Francisco, I haven't found it any further south than Merced, but every time I go to see my Dad in Modesto, I load up on that. Really, really good is butter, peanut butter and honey on toast! I think life could be really good if I could just eat all I wanted......
Sherry

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Sherry,

Wow, I've never heard anyone say KK donuts were awful!!! Interesting that no one in your family liked them. My DH wasn't interested in the hype but I wanted to try them when they opened as they just got one where my family lived up north and Mom said they were awesome. We both can agree they cost more than the other donut shops but I thought they were as good or better than everyone else! Pretty cool that as a company they give a free hot glazed donut to everyone standing in line to. As far as the hot dogs being ruined, it depends on what brand you buy...you can still go for the chicken/turkey/pork combo hot dogs and still say you can eat them because we aren't sure what parts are in those? LOL.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Aimee, having said that, you just know someone is going to have to tell us what's in them also. I for one am not going to read that post....
Sherry

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

LOL Sherry!!! Oh I know it! But I think having warned them you don't care to know they'll keep it a secret for you! I've always been one to say, "What's in this?" or "So what happens in this movie?" so you can't "ruin" much for me. But......I really can be limited to "animal parts" make up hot dogs rather than a detailed listing...EW! =)

Pearl River, LA

A llittle story of mayo from my childhood "back in the day."I used to love a mayo and cold biscuit sandwich when I came in from school....of course there was always cook cured bacon or sausage to go with it ... well sometimes I would make one and really love it ......other times I would hate it.....guess what I figured it out ......sometimes mom bought Miracle Whip and sometimes she bought what was on sale..... To this day I have to have my Miracle Whip....Other members of my family like Hellmans but I tell them It Miracle Whip here....you can eat Hellmans at your house.....my daughter has proceeded to bring up her own Hellmans and three types of Ketchup.....we have to decide which ketchup is best....but I already know...Hunts of course...shirleyt

No, Heinz catsup.......here we go again!

Sherry

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

I'm with ya wcgypsy, Sherry ..

It's HEINZ .. or nuffin'!! I've eaten many a fried tater 'alone, and all by itself' for lack of no fittin' ketchup! .. LOL ..

However, I've recently discovered that I LUV to eat my fried catfish dipped into coctail sauce rather than the ketchup or tarter sauce.
(incidentally, I usually make my own tarter sauce should I have a hankerin')

There are many things that folks will skimp by (or hafta deal) with .. but there are also some stuffs, that jes can't be mimmicked or substituted. The Heinz is merely one! (wellllll, other than the year I made my own 'ketchup'. Tasted mitey delicious .. but it failed to stay on the plate very well. Sort of a bit 'runny'. But, gosh-dawg, it was good! Reckon I'll brave 'up' one day .. and give it another whirly-go. .. hee ..

Shampoo and dish detergent is no big deal; bleach is bleach .. the cheaper the better. Musterd's mustard, no matter how you spell it ... The steak sauce'd normally been A1 - till I found the WinnDixie brand on a whim one day long long ago.

BUT .. I'm not such the doggone tacky person, to be at someone else's home .. and complain about what they have or don't have, to offer. They'll never hear a peep outta me about it. That'd be a bit disrespectful, in my book .. Besides, it goes both ways. Most all of the folks and family that visit, simply bring their own 'druthers'. And, it suits me dandily also ... so, it 'works' for everybody.

- Magpye

Pearl River, LA

Magype trust me when I say there is nothing tacky or disrespectful about my daughter....heck she comes loaded down with all kind of goodies everytime she comes....If she wants to have her hellmans here its fine with me.... I just need to keep my favorite around also.... today for instance she brought dad a shirt two shirts for me our favorite candies and fresh tomatoes from her garden..... I should have stocked hellmans and anything else she wants with out a comment.. Hey I guess that makes me the tacky one...ha ha....we just pick at each other and are the very best of best friends.... you should have seen our Mothers day annual load up at the nursery purchases..... fun fun fun.... on her.....shirleyt

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Now .. shirleyt ..

You know .. that mothers & daughters, and other 'family' stuffs & situations fall into the category: 'works for ever-body'. (heehee)

- Magpye

P.S. Are you familiar with any 'Bennetts', in the area there -?-

Pearl River, LA

Magpye,,,,,Yes great friends with Theresa of Bennetts groceries in sixthward...As I type hubby and daughter are making a morning run for milk and bread orange juice etc.... are you kin....shirleyt

Olympia, WA

Best Foods, Heinz ketchup, and real butter - those were promises I made to myself as I left my childhood home - no matter how poor I might be in my leaving years, I would always have those ...........and I have!

A dollop of BF on canned pears - right in the seed cavity!....and a maraschino cherry on top of that if we are being really ritzy!

MW was allowed - but I cannot remember when/why - that has been lost to the ages.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Yes'ms .. indirectly 'connected'. (hee) .. I'd met Theresa a few years ago, after they'd just gotten into that adorable lil 2 story home!! I tried my dang-dest to talk her out of some of her beautiful antique furniture; but she wouldn't cave! .. (lol) .. I think Theresa has now taken over one of the stores, hasn't she? ..

If ya would, and don't mind .. tell T 'hi' and ask her to relay to Unc MarCus & fmly, a 'howdy-do' from Auntie M. (If it doesn't trigger; I'm writing them out of my will) .. LOL ..

Have most all of you guys recovered from the damage caused by the hurricanes? Batten down the hatches .. for the season's right around the corner.

WUVIE, forgive me, please, for the unintentional off-topic. Any further correspondence, will continue via DGmail, etc. (OK, Shirleyt -?-)

Auntie M you are not going to believe it ....but I went to permit office today and guess who was there....Marcus..... my kids went to school with all the B kids ...was best friends with Bruce and my hubby coached Bruce in base ball 13-15 year olds....while Marcus reffed and Theresa fussed at him for bad calls on Bruce....how fun is that..... I could not believe the Irony of seeing him after reading your mail....the girls came in and away we went ......I could not get back to you until now.....I seeTheresa in the Hickory store once in a while.... as far as I know she does pretty much as she pleases these days.... pops in when she wants...works when she wants etc... we had a catch up about two months ago.... I do not see her as often as I used too back when we were raising the kids but we are all " give us a hug friends for life...I will give her you message....shirleyt

New question:

Would you say you like MW or mayo and it also happens to have been the condiment in your house growing up? Interesting to see if tastes have changed or you are conditioned to that flavor now....

Olympia, WA

Conditioned - in the childhood home, still a fav - Best Foods.....but maybe this should be "new" thread?

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

It still fits this thread. Grew up with Miracle Whip. Tried others, but didn't care for anything else.

It's what I like.

Not conditioned!

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I'm slowly being converted. I'm trying a cheaper brand of laundry soap, mayo, and furniture polish.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Interesting thread. Didn't know people had such passions about their MW-mayo preferences--not to mention all the other food fetishes!

About the mayo-- I thought I had read a few years ago in a California paper that Hellman's and Best Foods mayos were not actually the same recipe. That they had the same ingredients but in slightly different amounts to satisfy the East/West taste differences. It would be interesting to know if there was any truth in this...

I did find this discussion about the difference when I googled.

http://new.cbbqa.com/recipes/Mayonnaise.html

When we lived in Wisconsin years ago, I remember people eating mayonaise and tomato sandwiches for supper. Sort of like when we lived in England and people ate radish and butter sandwiches. Actually, those were pretty good. And lots of cucumbers on sandwiches, which at the time I thought was weird, but now I think it's delish.

I remember having our first "Betty Crocker Junior Cookbook" growing up with that banana spread with MW (or mayonaise, I guess) and rolled in chopped nuts recipe complete with a picture. My sister and I were dying to make that but our mom would never let us. Don't exactly know why. Too many calories maybe.

We used to try to make our own mayonnaise. It was easy with a blender. Not as good as Hellman's though, but we thought we were quite chic!

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Oh my goodness, tabasco ..
Taint nuthin' finer than a mater sammich! A couply pieces of white bread, spread with a good dollop of mayo on each, and about 3 or 4 (or 5) good slices of a fresh home-grown (burger-sized) maters placed onto one side of the bread, a lite sprinklin' of salt, with a good dose of black pepper .. Then slap that other piece of mayo'd bread on top and prepare to d'lite the palette and wipe your chin reg'lar ..

And to think .. it's still a bit before we get any of our garden fresh maters. C'mon maters!!

- Magpye

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Bananas, miracle whip and chopped peanuts was quite the treat when I was little!

I've had my radish sandwiches, now bring on the tomatoes. Only spread mine with cottage cheese and lots of black pepper!

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Hmmmm .. now, ya've got me REAL curious 'bout that medley of maters w/cottage cheese, Sal.

Picked up a couply of store-bought maters yesterday .. but they don't even 'feel' right! .. LOL ..

- Magpye

billyporter,
My brothers and I (and Mama, who's 87) were just talking about old times, and bananas with MW and chopped peanuts was one of my brothers' and my favorite treat for dessert. It's odd, too, that none of us has fixed them since we left home in the mid-60's.
Do you suppose it was just a "Iowa Farm" thing?! We grew up NE of Mt. Pleasant, just east of Winfield.
Deanna

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I won't buy a store tomato. I will use the diced ones from a can. I'm now not buying store onions. They are smelly and don't taste good anymore. Luckily my garden grown will be ready soon!

Laugh! I fixed them when my daughter was little, but not lately. I'm off bananas. They don't taste good anymore either. I do have a peanut chopper, but DH likes salted nuts and I like unsalted.

I never left Nichols. Just moved from the south edge to the north edge. We did have a barn and chicken house across the road that isn't in city limits. That qualify me for country livin?

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Billy,

I've definately got my food preferences when it comes to garden grown: it can't be beat!!! Now that I've tasted my garden tomatoes (love those tomato sandwichs Tabasco!) I just can't tolerate the store's "baseball" quality tomatoes....that's what another DGer taught me to call them. =)

I've not yet had the difference in onions! Guess I'll have to grow some!

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I got mine out in March this year, so I hit all the good rains. I'm anxious to see if it did them good. To me the store bought started smelling strong. I can't use them in potato salad anymore.

I tried Mooli turnips this year instead of the common Purple Top and they were really juicy!

I also grew the Daikon radish with great success. I grew enough to give my neighbor a couple since she's the one who told me about eating them in reatraunts.

Alas, the spinich is almost done.

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

When I was a kid (way back in the early 40s) I sure remember the mayo pickle relish spred. That & bread was the sandwich but it was so good. I have tried it once since but it isn't the same.. I don't know if it is my taste changed or the spread changed... probably some of both.

BTW I use kraft lite or fat free Mayo.
Sugar_fl

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Bringing up this old subject. :)

Thought I had no preference, just buy what's on sale/cheaper.

Then I had someone's tuna salad with more Miracle Whip in it than pasta and whoa. Realized it totally either 1) just ruined the dish for me or 2) getting such a strong dose of Miracle Whip let me know I don't care for it.

Then I saw a TV commercial for Hellman's Mayo and they proclaimed they don't put any additives and bogus stuff in it like "the other guys" so I compared labels at my next shopping trip. If ya'll haven't done so, give it a look see. I was SHOCKED to see that the generics I buy and even the LIGHT versions (of all brands) has tons of junk---like high fructose corn syrup in LIGHT mayo! I looked at the Hellman's regular mayo.

Ingredients: soybean oil, water, whole eggs and egg yolks, vinegar, salt, sugar, lemon juice, natural flavors (yeah would like to know what this is), calcium disodium EDTA (to preserve it).

So not as good as homemade but it's a step up from the stuff I can't believe I was eating all this time!

Having never bought it, buying generic for price, I was surprised at the difference in texture. It was so whipped and airy instead of heavy and smooth.

Who knew there was so much to know about your mayo?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Whoooo hoooo! Another Hellman's convert!

Whew, we knew more would come around if they only knew. LOL!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

HAHA!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I grew up thinking that I absolutely HATED mayonaise.

When I was in my early twenties, someone bought me a sub-- and it had mayo on it! YUK! But I liked it! ! ! !

Turns out that Miracle Whip makes me want to puke. I really like mayo. I never buy chicken or shrimp salad when I'm out. It might have the dreaded Miracle Whip Syndrome.

If I was starving, I'd eat grass before I'd take on the Miracle Whip.

I like Frenches Mayo very much, but Hellman's makes the best!

Blessings on your garden,
Elf

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

LOL Elf,

Indeed, many times I find myself asking what is on a sandwich.
The reply? Mayo. I ask, is it really mayonnaise or is it salad dressing?
Sure enough, they reply that it is either that or Miracle Whip.

Now how, I ask, does one pass Miracle Whip off as Mayo?

(cough, gag, sputter, spit)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Elf and Wuvie- you can visit me- I will never have Miracle Whip in my house. Hellmans all the way. Even Kraft that I grew up on doesn't seem good enough.
Cooks Illustrated rated Trader Joes mayo excellent but I haven't tried it
the Hellmans canola mayo tasted fine but had a smoother texture and I think they've discontinued it at my local stores.
