Miracle Whip or Mayonnaise?

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Okay throw me in the mix with billyporter and 101. I grew up on Jiff and Miracle Whip sandwiches. Don't even offer my PB&J, that's nasty. And BTW, my vote is Miracle Whip. I have tried some store brands, but non even close to Miracle Whip.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Oh, and hot dogs at an outdoor even, are heavenly. Never eat them at home, but there is nothing better, than a hot dog in the open air.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Just asked the DH which he prefers: mayo/Miracle Whip. He said he doesn't have a preference either? Be interesting to see if my kids grow up tasting a difference.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

A lil Cafe near here .. used to serve up the Bacon, Lettuce, & Tomato 'sammiches' with long slices of dill pickle on a mayo slathered toasted bun.

Two of my older brothers had to have a big ol dab of mayo on their Red Beans & Sausage over rice. Have no idea of the origin, but they were die-hard fans of Elvis ...

- Magpye

Bethelridge, KY(Zone 6a)

I have a buddy in NH who was born and raised in TX, he'll take a big ol' tablespoon of mayo and mix it in his beef stew. Anyone else tried this?

BTW, I too, like peanut butter and mayo 'sammiches'.

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

BLT - the best.
Have to do without the bananas.
Mayo & PB...have to think about that. I eat PB straight, no bread.
liverwurst, the br.w.g..r word I can't spell with horseradish mustard, yum.

Fun thread!
My DH can't believe I eat straight bread and butter (picky about the bread, though...no white paste stuff)

Bethelridge, KY(Zone 6a)

WUVIE,

Sorry to hi-jack your thread, but another little 'gripe' of mine, around here you can't get an iced coffee anywhere, only iced tea. If you order one in a restaurant, they look at you like you have two heads! In the Northeast, you can get one anywhere! What's up with that? No Dunkin Doughnuts around here either. :o(

Anyone opt to use the Miracle Whip (or the generic equivalent) .. in their regular 'southern' style of tater salad ? I've added a bit (with my Mayo) for some 'zest', on an occasion or two.

.. WUVIE ..
I wish you a plenty more .. of wonderful, lengthy, and informative replies & posts. As several have stated already: tis certainly a mitey fun thread !!

G'nite folks ..

- Magpye

Well, at my house we have mayo on *his* shelf and Miracle on *mine*! LOL Oh, and I don't like the store brand salad dressings. It's just gotta be Miracle Whip. Sorry!

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Midwest tater salad is Miracle Whipped! Adds the tang with the yellow mustard.

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Yep, I understand about the iced coffee thing, JoanJ. I like iced espresso, but not hot espresso poured over ice. Gracious! Just give me a glass of cold, brown water.

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

I for one like ALL mayonnaise- lol! Dukes, store brands, Kraft, BluePlate. I ain't picky.

MW does make the best deviled eggs, cole slaw, and tater salad, though.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Big_Red, no need to apologize, the more the merrier! And
speaking of tea, we need an iced tea...sugar or no sugar thread, LOL!

Iced coffee, yes! We can't have such fun in this little Podunk town. :-(

And doughnuts, we're not lucky enough to have a Dunkin, but we do
have a nice little Daylight Doughnut shop with some yummy goodies, and
superb bisquits and gravy.

Having originally come from New York, I thought
my relatives in the south were crazy for eating steak for breakfast,
not to mention bisquits and gravy. But oh aren't they good?

We have a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop in Tulsa, but I have to be honest
with you, the first time I ate a glazed doughnut from KK, I couldn't finish the
rest of it. Pure sugar coated with glazed sugar. Blechh!

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

That is something else I miss, sorry Wuvie.... a hot fresh Krispy Kream donut with maple icing
Geez, now I'm drooling......

Janis

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Geez, I pass by Krispi Kreme all the time; it's right down the road from the farmers' market in Louisville.

Having been brought up in New England though, I don't think KK holds a candle to Dunkin Donuts! And now they sell everything from egg and meat croissants to bagels, etc. I remember there being one DD in Louisville, but I'm not even sure that's open anymore.

As far as biscuits and gravy, I had never had it until we went to a little place in Houston, MO called the Hungry Holler. I remember them bringing me out this huge platter with two very large homemade biscuits and covered with a white gravy with sausage in it. Oh my gosh, I thought it was the best thing. Then I started eating it with over easy eggs on top!!! Gosh, I was in heaven. :) I'm not even sure you could find a restaurant in New England that serves the simplest of things, biscuits and gravy! We had a friend come to visit several years ago and we took him to breakfast. He ordered B & G. When it came, he said it looked like a "full diaper". Everytime I have B & G now, I think of that and laugh hysterically.

Now we New Englanders have had some strange eating habits as well. When I was little, we didn't have much money, so we used to eat things like onion and mustard sandwiches or peanut butter and cucumber sandwiches. Egg noodles with scrambled eggs and butter in them (you scramble an egg and throw into hot, drained egg noodles and the heat cooks the egg). Add butter, salt, pepper...YUM.

My grandmother used to boil her green beans in milk, butter, salt and pepper and they were soooooooooo good. We eat the beet greens! At the farmers' market, many people tell me they don't eat the greens because they didn't know you could. Turnips are the other way around; they throw away the turnip and eat the greens. Go figure!

And as far as iced tea goes....lots of ice and I prefer unsweetened unless it's sweetened with honey. The sweet tea in the restaurants is always so sweet. We used to go to a place that's closed now called Po Folks and get some really good iced tea in mason jars. They made theirs with honey.

Oh and potato salad and macaroni/tuna salad are not good with anything but Hellmann's!!!! :) Kathy

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

I like both. We grew up with MW and thought Mayo was yucky. Never used mayo until I was grown up and moved out. I have Hellman's and MW in the fridge. I love MW with cottage cheese and pears...hey, no gagging! and the mayo for most everything else. The mayo has to be Hellman's and if Kraft comes home by mistake it goes in the collection bag during food drives.

ETS - I drink unsweetened tea at home but order sweet when we're out. Tea flavor is too variable from restaurant to restaurant...sweet helps with that. Yep, I'm picky!

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Hey Stacy, Good to see you :) I have a phobia of Miracle Whip because my first husband was a tyrant and would only allow one kind of "mayo" in the house and it was MW!!! If I even so much as sneaked a little jar of Hellmann's in the house, he took it out on me in the form of a fist! (any excuse would do) When I left him, I went straight to the store and bought Hellmann's. LOL

P.S. Hellmann's has gotten so expensive though. If you have a Sam's card, in Louisville I can get a gallon for $8.00 which is the best buy I've seen. It is almost $4 a quart in the stores now. Geez, with all the eggs I have, I should make my own....but I just know it wouldn't taste like theirs. :(

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Misty, oh, I hear you on the ex husbands. My father was the
'eat what we've got' kind of guy, no preferences allowed. Bah!
Yeah, but we sure could afford beer, cigarettes and bowling,
couldn't we? >:-(

We have Miracle Whip and Mayo in our fridge, and if someone
prefers another brand, so shall they have it. It's not a cost thing
to me, it's a preference. As strongly as my father enforced his
'rules', I now go out of my way to break them all.

My brother was surprised to find multiple shampoos and conditioners
in our bath. He carried on ranting just like my father about how "We have
one kind of shampoo in our bathroom and if you don't like it you go without."
Um, yeah, like we all have the same hair type? Obviously he inherited my
father's 'What I Say Goes' attitude.

Now that I am an adult, my family enjoys a virtual buffet. If we can
afford it (I manage the budget quite well, thank you) you may enjoy it.
We often have four different things for supper. It's not costly, it's creativity
in the kitchen.

:-)

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi ((Kathy))! How's my Tory girl??

We pick up Hellman's when they have it BOGO free. That sure takes the sting out of the cost. I think I'll go home and make Caesar dressing...just got my lab tests back and they were perfect! Woohoo!

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Tory girl will be 8 this year, she's lost a lot of teeth and slow coming back.. She is also going to be a big sister this fall and she's thrilled about that. I'll try to send an updated picture....what a ham she is.

Have a great day.

Wuvie,

I LOVED your last posting! Wow, you should write for some women's magazines, really!

I myself love Krispy Kreme but you can only eat so many, that's what makes it great! I can't stand when warm donuts (like grocery stores) get packaged and then turn to mush. Oh it's so gross. But I love KK and they are so awesome, whenever their HOT NOW sign is up everyone in gets a free glazed donut. I think they are neat because their donuts taste completely different from all other places.

Mircle Whip - GAG! BLAAA! CHOKE! I hate the sweetness! YUCK!

Hellman's ALL THE WAY!!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Let's see, grew up on Miracle Whip and Skippy and still both the best to me.
Steve, well he is a real Hellman's man, says Miracle Whip is not mayo it's salad dressing.
As for the potatoe salad, wouldn't use anything but Miracle Whip.
Crabcakes, well just can't make Maryland crab cakes with anything but Hellmans and the same goes for crab dip.
Guess we have both covered, one thing we won't opt for is any other brands, no store brands, nope not here.

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

I like salad dressing for certain things, but I am a mayonaise person.. I eat mayonaise, catsup and hot sauce on everything I eat..Including fruits, veggies or meat...Blue Plate is the favorite, but too costly now..Our local Harvery's stores have their brand(Sure-Fine), and it is just as good as Blue Plate....Hellman's is about the only kind I really prefer not to eat, but I can..It's better than none..And yes, I put a spoonful in my bowl of beef stew, chili, soup or whatever..lol

Larkie

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Never heard of it in stew. Hmm...is it to thicken or just add a little flavor? Larkie, you sound like DH, when we married he put hot sauce on EVERYTHING. I soon devoured cookbooks across several states from public libraries, writing down everything on index cards that looked good. I have quite a collection now. Since I learned to really cook (lol) he has really cut back on that hot sauce. ROFL!

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Can't eat Krispy Cremes. I'd rather have hot homemade ones!
Iced tea, Luzianne with Splenda in the summer. Hot, green or jasmine in the winter.
Honey, with apple cider vinegar.
Hellmans for 7 layer salad. MW doesn't taste right.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

oh boy .. billyporter ..

Ya know you're gonna hafta share that 7 layer salad recipe .. if ya would, please -?-

- Magpye

Piqua, OH(Zone 6a)

The DH and I ate Hellmans for years then it seemed like it seperated all the time. I switched to Miracle Whip Free and that is what we have been using for a long time especially since I found out I have high cholesterol.

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

Alamoaimee,
I don't put it in the stew , etc when it is cooking, I add it to what I am eating.. Just love mayonaise on everything.Right now i am eating a banana smothered in it, lol..As for the hot sauce(La).. I carry a bottle with me always, and I am a good cook, lol ..Born to great southern cooks and carrying on the tradition.

Larkie

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Bananas with Miraclel Whip and chopped peanuts. Mom used to make that for supper.

7 Layer salad
1 small head lettuce torn into bite sized pieces and put in the bottom of a 9x13 cake pan.

Add a layer of green pepper, red pepper, onion & 1 package frozen peas-frozen.

Mix 2 cups Hellmans Mayo, 2 T. sugar, small pieces of bacon and spread overtop. Top with 6 ounces of cheddar cheese.

Refrigerate overnight.

Buckimom, we switched too, till we realized, for the amount we use, and the fact it's not animal fat, we went back to the regular.

Hot sauce? Franks! I could eat hot wings three times a day for a week I think. I love them!

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

So succinct, billyporter, life must be busy! :-)
Don't do tea, except maybe licorice or lemon, if I remember. The honey/ACV is a home remedy for joint flexibility, isn't it? Thanks for reminding me. I used to drink that.
Growing up, you ate what was there. If you didn't eat your supper, you sat in front of it 'til bed, then had it cold (pre-microwave) for breakfast. It was very budget-oriented, but also to my Dad's taste. I was able to experiment with cooking if I could use the bulk things already there, and also make a regular meal.

We three developed lots of ways to cough yucky stuff into our hands and slip it to Buster, the dog under the table. Or suddenly have to go the the bathroom when our mouth was stuffed as full as possible with the objectionable stuff. Liver and onions and cubed steak with onions were the two I remember particularly well.

No accounting for taste, and I try to accomodate.

WUVIE, do you cook 4 different suppers, or do you each get your own ready?

As far as DD or KK or.... nothing near like that for at least 125 miles, unless you count the grocery store versions, which I don't (frozen donuts...gag). We do have a mom and pop donut/pizza shop about 20 miles away.

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

That post was half-written right after billy's first post about the 7 layer salad.

Sorry, but it sounds absolutely awful.

Billyporter,
Bananas with miracle whip and chopped peanuts-must be an Iowa thing. I definitely remember it as a supper 'treat' while growing up.!
we always ate MW when I was growing up, but when I got out on my own and discovered Mayo, I never went back!
My DH prefers MW, but I have conveniently "forgotten" to add it to the grocery list , for the last 17 years. Ha.
Don't even talk to me about "lite" Mayo or MW. blech! disgusting. I'll have to sacrifice my calories somewhere else!
DeannaV

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

While shopping today, I took a glance at the price of the Miracle Whip. Yikes! Was mere pennies shy of $5.oo a quart jar!!

Thank you, billyporter/Sal .. for the 7 layer salad recipe. Some years ago; had a neice that brought a dish to a family gathering: and haven't been exposed to any decent rendition of it, since. (hee) I'll have it a go, in the next few days ... (Afraid, that a three cheese 'blend' will have to do for this trial run, tho'. lol)
Again, tis much appreciated ...

- Magpye

billyporter
Well, so you like Frank's hot sauce too? Wow, I'm not believin it. LOL That's the only kind I like on my wings. Now I do love other kinds of hot sauce ... just like that Frank's on my wings. As for that salad ... well, that one I don't care for, but each his own. :)
I agree with you DeannaV about the low fat. Yuck yuck. Not me either. don't want low fat salad dressing either. I use such a small amount I'll just cut calories some where else.

~Elaine~

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

4Paws asked: WUVIE, do you cook 4 different suppers, or do
you each get your own ready?

Hi Paws. On a typical day, we will have many various things to
eat in the refrigerator. Hubby works just up the road, so he comes
home for lunch. During gardening season, you are less likely to
find substantial chow - more like sandwich making, pasta salads, etc.
One son will eat anything, one won't eat diddly, hubby and I are in
agreement about most of our meals.

But in the fall and winter, I often have food all cooked and ready to
go. For example, I'll fully cook a lasagna, put the leftovers in the refrigerator
and then when it is chilled, cut it up and wrap it in individual servings.
Same goes for casserole. Cook, chill, cut, wrap. I'll prep a few things this
way, then when someone is hungry, they only need hit the refrigerator to
see what there is and choose from that. Not really that different than
finding leftovers, but in this case, you don't have to search, as there are
many things to choose from.

Don't laugh, but I'm a bit anal when it comes to labeling things, so when
you look in my refrigerator, don't be surprised to find a number of
plastic containers with printed labels. I know, I know, it wouldn't take an
idiot to open the lid and see, but many dishes are labeled. Ham, cheese,
lettuce, riced potatoes, egg salad, etc. are generally in the fridge with easy
to read labels.

In our house we rarely eat at the table, it's a "Grab it and go" type of cafe. LOL

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

I need to be more anal about labels. Then DH could feed himself. I could similarly, because DH takes two meals a day, 4 days a week to work and he takes the full spread: roast, potatoes, veggies, etc., sandwiches on Mondays because it's so busy at the clinic on Mondays.

I miss eating at the table. It was a good time to get together, but it's a thing of the past unless we have guests.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Succinct, I had to look that up, laugh. I couldn't place the meaning. I drink acv mainly for over all health. I Liked liver and onions as a kid. Didn't like meatloaf, scalloped corn, canned peas, squash or sweet potatoes. Ate everything else. Mom liked to cook, so we has a lot of different foods.
Deanna, must be Iowa for bananas and peanuts!
Magpye, I've tried adding cukes and radishes, but basically this salad is good as is! We hardly use mayo anymore. I keep a small jar on hand.
101, That's so funny! How are you on liver? Laugh!
Wuvie, I'm a make ahead and freeze too. I have a big bowl of pinto beans and ham I made yesterday that gets frozen today. Saran wrap allows me to peek.
