Miracle Whip or Mayonnaise?

I *don't* do liver!! If you do ... then we ain't soul mates anymore!!! :) LOL Surely God didn't intend for me to put something that smells like that in my mouth!! LOL LOL Now like I said ... that's just *my* opinion and everybody's got one, so *please* don't start throwing things at me for mine!! :)
*ducking just in case*

No ducks. Laugh! To be honest Elaine, I don't like it as much as I did when I was a kid. We never buy it because it all tastes wangy now. So we can still be soulmates. Laugh!
Sally : )

Whew ... you *had* me worried there for a minute! LOL :)

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Aimee, thanks for the link. I bookmarked it. Making it may prove cheaper. I buy ''Just Yolks'' from ''The Bakers Catalogue,'' so I don't have to crack an egg.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

I like Hellman's mayo. I buy the lite. After two heart operations I usually watch my diet. I'm not sure that I have ever tried Miracle Whip. I have never used ketchup or tomato sauce. When I cook I use tomato paste.
I like liver and onions but rarely eat it. It's loaded with the bad cholesterol. Peanut butter sandwiches are excellent with slices of bread and butter pickles or Vidalia onions. I also like mustard or ranch dressing with my fries. Weird, huh?

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Ah, ketchup! Heinz or other? Heinz!

Mustard (yellow) on fried potatoes. Horseradish too.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Billy,

Is there any other brand BUT Heinz?

;-)

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

Grape Jelly on fried potatoes!

Heinz Ketchup

I Hate mustard so no preference

A1 Steak Sauce

and the one thing I have recently found after years of searching.... used to have it when I was a kid...
"Heinz Geunine Dill Pickles" whole

LOL

Janis

Well you *know* it's just gotta be Heinz! LOL

My DH likes French dressing on fries and salmon croquettes. I call him weird! LOL Like to tease him that way. ;)

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

No Wuvie. Never seen any other kind! LOL!

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

French fries to dip in vanilla ice cream :)

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Now that's odd! But strangely appealing.

Hey Misty ... you ain't PG now are you? LOL LOL

Woofens, try grating up those pickles in potato salad, using a bit of grated sweet onion (Vadalia if you can get it), a couple of boiled eggs, Miracle Whip (of course and salt and pepper. Serve it up warm. Mmmmm! I always get compliments on my potato salad this way. :-)

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

:) Elaine, bite your tongue....NO, but a daughter and stepdaughter are, LOL

I also like to dip potato chips in vanilla ice cream. :)

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Miracle Whip! Yummy! But I had to buy mayo which my boy dislike MW.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Ketchup brands? Man you ladies should be in the commercial business! LOL. My mom would only buy brands. I married and tried generic and can't taste a real difference. I can eat any mayo, ketchup, mustard, etc. UNLESS you are talking special flavored condiments like honey mustard. I did try generic and didn't care for it and prefer Kraft Honey Mustard instead.

Hopefully I will get lucky and have kids who'll eat anything just like their mom. =)

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I try generic, but sometimes only the brand name is good.

Yep me too. Got lots of them I buy regularly. :)

Hey Misty ... maybe it's the company you keep then? LOL Just gotta tease you a bit. ;)

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, Billy, quite the truth!

I like to skimp when I can, but my gosh, there
are times you just can't.

We went through a budget crunch a while back,
so I thought I would stock up on generic canned
vegetables.

Libby's and Green Giant, my sincere apologies.
Generic green beans in a can...ugh!
Northern beans, just not the same. Sorry, Bush's.

I love generic chocolate covered cherries during the
holidays. I told hubby not to buy those expensive things,
I'll take generic cherries any day.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

I don't really buy generic to skimp and don't have a grocery budget, it's just hubby and I and we make pretty good money. I think I just don't have a great sense of taste buds or something weird...I'm not normal HA...and can tolerate most any condiment.

I didn't know there was a difference to the canned goods though. Did buy a Walmart green bean awhile back, opened it up and ROFL there was like 3 beans in there! HA! But it was a fluke. I try to use the garden or frozen vs. canned.

But I'm with you Wuvie on some brands...if it isn't homemade it better be BUSH'S BAKED BEANS. I also can't eat any mac and cheese except Kraft whether it's the dry powder one or the Velveta they make. Gotta be Kraft. Kraft for cheese to. I've seen those commercials making fun of the other cheeses being mostly OIL. EW!

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Ditto Aimee!

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Ha, ha....I just read this and there is a Bush Baked Beans commercial on TV :) What's that say? LOL

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

It must mean ROLL THAT BEAUTIFUL BEAN FOOTAGE!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

ROFL and slapping my thigh!!! HAHAHAHA!

Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

I know most have eaten candyed sweet potatoes but have any of you tryed it with flower gravey???. Everyone I have told about it thinks it sounds crazy but try it once & I don't think you will eat it any other way.
Jerry.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Do tell. Flower gravy? As in garden flowers?

Hmm.

Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

I should have said flour instead of flower, That's what I get for being on Dave's Garden to long.
Jerry.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

OH, LOL!

Here I was thinking you had an interesting recipe for dandelions.

Sweet potatoes with gravy, mmm hmm!

Jerry,
Are you perhaps, like me, a transplanted "Missouri Hillbilly"? Actually, I was born and raised in southern IA, but spent the first 10 years of my adult life married to a Missouri Coonhunter, and we lived waaaaaay back in the sticks in SW MO. Still love to hear those hounds sing. We raised and trained Walker Coon Hounds and had two turn out to be grand champions.
Thats another story, but anyhow, that's where I learned to love sweet taters with country style milk gravy. Yummm.
Deanna

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Oh I can't eat the flour gravy, I am just too chicken. Just doesn't look good to me but my DH, a Texan loves it and so does everyone else in his family.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Well speaking of mayonnaise, a mayonnaise cake is awesomely wonderful :)

go to www.hellmanns.com and there is a recipe for Chocolate Mayo cake. yummm

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Kathy,

Thanks for the link. I have a similar recipe, I think they called WWII cake or something...might be slightly different. But so interesting the things you can do with mayo.

Why not, just eggs and oil I suppose.

Mayonnaise only!!! I've rummaged through the fridge just to find something to dip in the mayo :)

Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

Deanna.
I lived in Paragould, Ark when I was 14 until I was 15 & then moved back to Des Moines & lived here every since. I picked a lot of cotten way back so I remember a lot of hard work.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

DW was used to MW when we were married, I was used to Best Foods Mayo (Hellman's). For some time we had both, now it is Just BF with a small bottle of MW on occasion. I bought some Kraft mayo last month because it was on sale for 99¢, but can't say I'd do it again. Beloved son wouldn't eat anything that had mayo on it (or eggs either) and still doesn't at age 37. He's hell with hot sauce though, wow! Mayo is the best of all possible condiments and enhances everything it touches. P-nut butter-mayo-dill pickle & p-nut butter-mayo-banana sammiches are the greatest. Lots of Best Foods on steamed asparagus or mixed with a spot of vinegar or lemon juice as a substitute for sour cream. Its uses are endless.

I have worked in the retail and food service industries for many years so I know a bit of what I speak- lol! Having worked at all types of stores and stocking merchandise, you see what comes off the trucks and what companies they come from, etc.... Also you learn about the mfg process, etc...
Most people would be really shocked to know what big name companies also make no name, generic or store brands. They have assembly lines where a brand name label is stuck on a product and on the other side of the plant are the lines for the generic labels- very same product.
I have read lots of research and studies on taste tests for food products. The name brands don't fare better in blind taste tests and sometimes do worse than less expensive ones. Remember the infamous coffee trials that were on 20/20, I believe. Most- not all- of out "taste" is psychological. We expect something with a $$$ price to be better than something cheaper. It is not *always* the case.

*********Before I got married I would only eat brand name food and drink brand name sodas. I used only brand name cleaners, cosmetics, paper products, etc... Living on a budget and watching my money made me switch [early on in my marriage] to store brands. In 16 yrs, I have re-trained my "taste". Now I only buy brand names when they are on a very good sale or I have a free coupon- lol!! If I come in with Pepsi or Coke, DH says "it must have been on sale".

Little insider tip: If you want to know who really makes Wal-Mart/Sam's brand milk, send me a dmail- lol!

BERRYGIRL!!!!

Wow, I really appreciate your experience on this. I know people will still swear up and down that one product is better and in some cases it can be true but I've heard lots of reports and seen blind taste tests done that concluded the same as you!!!! I made the same switches once I married and realized what groceries cost (lol) although we enjoy a generous budget I just find buying a label wastes my money. Do tell though, are there SOME name brand you really can tell the difference in?

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Oh sure there are differences. But I think for the *most part* one brand is as good as the other. Yeah, my tushie would probably prefer Charmin instead of no-name bath tissue, but I ain't paying $3.00 for 4 rolls of something that's going to be flushed- LOL!! My 99 cents brand will do the same unglamorous job!!

I cannot tell you the last time I bought Tide laundry detergent- or any brand name cleaner. I just cannot see paying $5 plus bucks to wash my clothes- sorry Proctor and Gamble. Ask any chem experts and they'll tell you soap is soap. Some just smells better, suds better or is in a prettier package.

Edited to add: the only brand name personal care product I routinely buy is Aquafresh toothpaste for sensitive teeth. That is only b/c I can't find a generic version- but you better believe I look everytime to see if there is one.

ROFL Berry!! I buy name brand toothpaste myself...to chicken to try generic. But we use cheap shampoo (Sauve) and generic soaps for sure. Especially like you say, for washing dishes and clothes...just money down the drain. I have priced the big jugs of laundry soap at Sam's Club and they are all running about $15-17 bucks a tub!!!! I buy the cheapest one they have (forget the brand at the moment...oh yes, it's ALL I think, for sensitive skin) and it's like 12 bucks! I bought the Scott's before and my teen brother visited and asked why I buy cheap toilet paper. HAHAHAHA! It was awesome...I was just thinking....when you pay your own bills boy.....But I did it because you change the roll way less often. I upgraded to soft tissues again but it's still the generic double roll of Sam's Choice version.

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

I have tried the generic toothpaste and it is good. I had to switch a few yrs ago b/c my teeth got sensitive. Any dentist worth his salt will tell you that toothpaste just makes us feel better about the whole tooth cleaning process. Just using a plain toothbrush will remove plaque from the teeth. Baking soda is great for brushing and a lot of folks still use it. Back in the old days they just used sticks, twigs or whatever they could get- lol! We are sooo spoiled!!! The whiteners[which are bad for tooth enamel] and flavorings are designed to make us want them. Yeah, I like fresh breath but using a cheap minty mouthwash after baking soda will do the trick.

I too use either Suave or White Rain hair products and love them! A lot of cosmetologists [and chemists] have said that all shampoo is supposed to do [ and all it actually] is clean your hair- period! All that other stuff is fluff. Conditioners do help with dry hair- b/c they put oil back on the hair. All these promises about healthier hair if you use a mega buck product is false advertising. No vitamin can penetrate the hair to make it healthier. That has to come thru nutrition- not a 15.00 bottle of shampoo.

Edited to add: You mentioned Scotts: that is the ONLY brand my grandfather would buy. If he was alive today I think even he'd be hard-pressed to buy it as it is very pricey here! MY MIL and SIL will ONLY buy brand names of everything. I am glad I don't have to foot their grocery bills- LOL!
