;)

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Hehehehehe . . . I'm only 5' 3" at best so have to look UP at my blooms!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Does the rain affect messenger as in getting washed off? We have had rain now for a week heavy at times. I am reluctant to spay. Should I wait for a dry day? I really want to get started on this.
Thanks, Ronnie

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

Ronnie,

I think I read somewhere that you need to have 30 minutes in between spraying and rain.

Central FL, FL(Zone 9b)

Right. And don't spray during the hottest part of the day.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks GG that should work for tomorrow. My next question was going to be when to spray! Thanks bivbiv, I am going to try it our in the morning. Looking forward to some good results!!

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

I have to check my appointment book and see if my 3 weeks are up. Thanks for bringing it up, I needed a reminder, LOL

deann,

do you have to deadhead those petunias?

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

It looks Great.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

well I haven't been posting here, but I will tell you this. For the first time in years I had ZERO problems with pest on my tomatoes and the fruit was wonderful and plentiful. I will be a standard practice for me to apply messenger on my 'maters.

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

TwinLakes.........NO I do not deadhead them. They happen to be Wave Petunia's....but I must admit, by habit, when I walk by and look, I do help it along.....I keep forgetting you don't have to do it to Wave's.

Does anyone wonder if there will be harm to the plant genetically with long term use? Will it alter the veggies that we are eating??? This popped into my mind after all the info about hormone treatment on cows..

High Desert, NV(Zone 5a)

My understanding is that messenger is NOT a hormone, but a naturally occurring protein that tricks the plant into thinking it is under attack. Thinking that it is fighting off a pathogen the plant goes into overdrive. It is similar in some ways to a immunization, your body, thinking it has been exposed to a disease mounts a defense against it. Therefore when or if you are actually exposed, you don't contract the disease.

Messenger was awarded the Presidential Green Chemistry award by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Edited to add,
Someone please correct me if i am wrong...

I think it's entirely diferent as these are protiens. Answers are in the threads on Messenger somewhere, just do a DG search and read. I am sure the fist size wonderful strawberries I'm eating have been Messengered.

Have been using Messenger on everything.
Castor Beans ~ put on a seed head at 9" height
Japanese Morning Glories ~ put blooms on earlier
haricot verte green beans are doing well; we have already had two small meals of them

Flowers are blooming prolifically but would have to go back to last year's pics and compare

I just don't know . . . maybe will know better as the summer moves along. I am getting ready to do my third application.

Deann,

Those petunias look great, thanks for the before and after pics.

How often did you apply messenger between the pics? Once a week or every two weeks?

Thanks,

Maureen

Westwood, MA

Wow I am so impressed by all the testimonies to Messenger. I actually tried it last year but only used it once and was probably underwhelmed..Now I know why because I didn't use it every three weeks. Correct? At any rate, does anyone know if I can use it from last year? I still have some left in some packets that haven't been opened yet.....Kathy

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

yes u can still used unopened packets. Opened ones need to be used within 3-4 hrs

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Maureen........I spray with messenger probably every two weeks..........

Deann

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Does anyone mix there miracle grow with it? Should I do one then the other?

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

The Mighty Plant is Harpin protien and a similar to MG fertilizer.
A pkg opened can be clamped closed and used with-in 3-4 weeks.
Once it's mixed it needs to be applied with-in 3-4 hours.
I have a one gallon pump type mister. I believe this is the secret to my success.
I also know that a fine mist on the surface of the foliage is all that is needed. Anymore is a waste. It needs to dry on there.
I also want to warn everyone that weeds get bigger with this too. Of course in my case that just makes them easier to pull.

Where do you folks buy Messenger? Last year, at the spring GA RU, a spokesperson from the company that makes Messenger passed out some packets. I applied mine buy saw no results. Perhaps I waiting too long to use it.
I have some plants that simply are not responding to regular fertilizer.

Betty,

Look in the Co-op forum for the Messenger Co-op being hosted by GardenGlory.

I dont have a before Pic, because this fushsia did'nt have any blooms when I sprayed messenger.. but this is one big bloom! Thats a six inch ruler next to it. (june bride). This was about two weeks after first application. It's starting to bloom again now, I'm watching it to see if this one bloom was a freak, or if the whole plant will bloom BIG.

I mix it with spray and grow and a liquid fertilizer...you can mix it with MG for sure.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

S n G also offers it on their site. They are so uppity! They told me when I asked, not to mix it with and to put 2 days between SnG applications and Messenger applications.
Now I know the elements of SnG I will never spend that much $ on it and also believe Bill's Fertilizer is plain ole Fish Emulsion. I am sure that mixing messenger with is the most reasonable method as you go over everything once.
Sidney

St. Louis, MO(Zone 5b)

On the edenbio site it says not to mix it with oxidizers.

I am not familiar with "Spray and Grow". I use Peter's Bloom. What do you all think? I wanted Peter's Excel which the garden centers used but I think they quit making it and replaced it with "Bloom." Does anyone have an opinion on one vs. the other.
Thanks McMolly, I will check it out. But I don't understand why it isn't more available in garden centers.

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Well if you want my 2 cents.....mixing products with "other products" is asking for trouble. Its not rocket science here to know that it would change the molecular balance of either product. Would you take 2 aspirin, and then figure, well if I take two Aleeve I am gonna feel even better.......

Deann

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

But Messenger is not a fertilizer; this would be more like mixing aspirin and an antihistamine. Mighty Plant is Messenger + fertilizer.

That said, I don't mix them either just because it is too hard to remember what I sprayed with that way. I mess one week and fertilize another.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well, Deann I somewhat agree and SnG doesn't want you to fertilize with anything but Bill's(Fish Emulsion) for 2 days before and after the application of SnG.
SnG is Iron and Zinc derivitives, and Messenger is a Harpin protien. I have serious doubts it makes any difference. However, I don't mix them myself.
I do however deadhead BEFORE spraying that fishy Bill's laden SnG. LOL
I still need a shower afterwards.

Edenbio has a message board, and someone asked a question about what products can be mixed with messenger. Here's a link to the answer: http://www.edenbio.com/garden/index.php?option=com_joomlaboard&Itemid=98&func=view&id=52&catid=4

Hope this helps,

Spray-N-Grow http://www.spray-n-growgardening.com/?nd=sngproducts

I have used SNG and think it a bit expensive but so is Messenger... I did have appreciably bigger Stargazer lilies with the SNG. The flowers were bigger and the stems thicker than with Messenger.

I am just not seeing the super results with Messenger that many others seem to have. My experiments with the geraniums are about the same between SNG and Messenger. I ordered about $45 worth of Messenger and Mighty Plant in a co-op so I am still using it, but I'll go back to SNG next year for the lilies especially.

I did see a huge difference in my tomatoes when I applied Vigoro Tomato fertilizer, after seeing my neighbor's huge, thickly laden plants and asking what she was using! She gave me some and it was amazing how quickly my plants responded.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Thanks for posting that so everyone could see, Sterling

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I am glad too since I use both/all3 on everything. What I have noticed most about the harpin products is the multitude of blooms that follow a Harpin application.
;)

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Well, I just sprayed 5-6 gallons of Messenger around on all my beds 2 days ago. My roses have no more black spot and the blooms are coming out.

I received a couple trays of tired zinnias last week and they are all spiffed up and putting out new blooms.

My cardinal climbers are blooming now and my seedlings potted up one size are growing noticibly taller in just 2 days.

I'm afraid to spray it on my Alocasia Macchrozia (sic) for fear they will take over my whole 5 acres. They are working on the first 1 acre now.

LOL Molly......show us some pics of that Mac!

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Brinda,

I sell these by mailorder. When I bought them, I planted them in 2 small rows to be field grown. You are only looking at the 2nd row. The row on the right are the runaways. And there are babies packed in the left row in between the larger ones.

Wish the Variegated ones were this prolific.
