Getting ready for the DG Photo Contest, 2005

This year will be fun.

We're going to do a photo contest soon (opening it within 2 weeks from now). The contest will have several categories and winners will be selected from each category.

What will the categories be this year?

One addition I'd like to see is a contest with people posing with DG T-shirts. :-)

In the Misc I noticed the majority of the entries could be broken down to 7 new categories.

Wildlife
Blooms~~and alot of these could have gone into other catagories already listed.

I love the suggestion for using the T-shirts! I bet folks will get really creative on this one!

No, that's good m_g. We need lots of ideas...just trying to get it all in one place!

Weather is great idea, so is wildlife!! (hehe I have plenty of those pictures!)

I'd be willing to help "guide" photos into a more appropriate category if needed. Sometimes people might be unsure which catagory would be best?

Is there a category for non-blooming plants like trees, shrubs and other plants that may be photographed for their unusual shape (Harry Lauder's Walking Stick) or weird seed pods, or fall color?

I would like to see a category for bouquets in the flower section. Also, how about categories for dahlias and coleus?

And just an idea for sometime down the road....would it be possible to use the winning photos as banners on the DG forums?

I have seen some stunning photos of ornamental grasses. Where would they fit in?

What if we did a catagory for each type of forum in each forum, then transferred the winners from there to be voted on by everyone? Or would that be more of a hassle?

Am I nagging yet?

I haven't launched it yet... I guess I'm surprised by the lack of interest that has been shown in this thread.

I was waiting for any Admin feedback on some of the suggestions already posted.

some of us, it may not be lack of interest so much as - being new, we are a little insecure ...and seeing the level of skill of the others, it can be kind of overwhelming!

Hi Dave, I am interested. I only have 1 or 2 pictures I think, but I was looking forward to getting my feet wet this year and then all next season I would be looking for photo ops.

I didn't post because I thought it was just an announcement and everyone knows that I rarely post unless I have something earth shattering to say (right mg...debi??? muhahahah)

Veggies nees an overhaul...seems there's never any pumpkin shots. Why not try best 'Harvest Basket' using any veggie or combination of veggies?

How about seasonal? Best Spring, Best Summer, Best Winter? Oops! And Best Autumn?

Someone from the Photo forum suggested I enter a photo and I was lead to this forum which I don't even have as a favorite!

I would expect to see info on a Photo contest over on the Photo forum! Any chance getting it over there?

Add my name to the list of those who were waiting for something to happen. OOPS!

Floridian has a great list going so far! She has also captured the bulk of the categories in which we have 'plant' forums, which I believe are a natural breakdown. Just need to add Dahlias, Coleus, Orchid Cactus... and probably a few others (especially newer ones) that I can't remember just now.

How about extending the Container Gardening one to include Bouquets?

Collages would be fun, especially with the recent interest in Picasa.

I like the seasonal ones; perhaps along with Weather?

Trees, shrubs, grasses, seeds, and seedpods are nice new ideas! I can't think of how to place them just now, or extend/change the categories for veggies. Will keep working on it, though. :-)

i really would like to see pets on the photo list. so many of us have wonderful picks of our pets.
i also like the idea of having a photo contest for each forum.

I admit I've not been following all the ideas very closely, being wrapped up in other DG-related projects (most notably PlantFiles).

Okay, let's go forward here. Could someone summarize what we're going to do? Melody - I love you Harvest Basket idea and I love maggiemoo's best seasons.

Let's figure this out, I'll setup the categories and then open the contest!

I was watching the thread and awaiting new admin posts, too -- definitely interested. I'd like to see a pets category, for they're often our gardening companions. :)

I think the concensus is to keep the same catagories as last year and refine them a bit.
