Coffee and...Part 36...! :-D

VI=I absolutely loved teaching and still keep in touch with several of my former students. In fact I work out daily with one of my former students that I just loved!! There couldn't have been a job more suited to me. And I was good (patting myself on the back) Just ran out of steam and there were so many young ones looking for a job. (plus they were offering a good buy out for those that had been there for 30 yrs or more) However an old, grouchy hag took over for me and for that I will be forever saddened.

I do spend too much time on here- so I will sign off and bundle up and take a walk in the dying gardens.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

In a way I do,Ann, especially since my husband died that will be a year Oct 9.
DG has been my life line since and even before when he was so very ill, it gave me a minute or two to relax. Because of my horrid back I can't do to much in the garden or even in the house though I can't sit very long I must take a walk to get some relief but not for long, have to either lie down or sit.

Sarv...LOL & LOL (wacko! :-D) You're so cool!

Ann...the 88 is my birthday (I *knew* I could remember my name that way. hehehe...I always wanted to play piano but never got past 'Heart and Soul' or Chop sticks. :-D But I did try the guitar once...oh and then there was the violin and the flute. I guess I 'do' my music best in the form of pre-recorded. LOL)

Darius...you really *do* have to make us a list sometime. (I'm still amazed at you skill with a hammer and saw!)

Oooops! Thought I'd have a few minutes to catch up...but I'm babysitting (voluntarily, I might add. :-)).

Later!

Well here I am again. And I haven't left the computer either. lol

But I DID leave DG and spend time downloading sound files for pieces which might be appropriate for my church handbell choir. I haven't bought any music this year and if I don't spend my budgetary allowance, I'll lose it. :-( Too bad. Next year is a provincial festival year and there will be a list of music to buy, some of which won't be overly appropriate for my group. It would be nice to be able to hold some $ over. Now I'm getting away from the computer.

Sarv, Kooger, Julie...

This morning, I actually wrote out a list of what I've done (career-wise anyway) but it's too long AND sounds waaaay too boastful to post. Suffice it to say I've done far more diverse things than most folks, and succeeded at many of them. The exception was making and keeping money!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

dang, and that money thing comes back and bites u!!

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Ann, that's what we all say....I'm guessing that others do as I do, walk past and give a quick read, and then be unable to resist making a comment

I'm here, but I'm having a scatterbrained day and I can't even keep my notes straight.

Dairus, I want your resume too!

I like classical music, there is a great radio station out of Iowa City that I listen to every night. And the kids know if it is on the radio, that means I'm prolly in a mood and to leave me alone. I like uplifting pieces while I'm out in the garden weeding. And Butt-Kicking Country, lol.

Come on, Darius....give it a shot.....Please????

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Okay, Okay... but remember, I really am NOT boasting, just have had interesting opportunities along the way...

Short form:

Summer job in banking after high school. Hated it.
Orthodontic tech/Miami: made braces and retainers
R&D Tech/Miami: made first variable rate pacemakers (just the plastics, not electronics)
R&D/Baltimore: ran heart-lung machine (first heart transplant), and did artificial heart research
Medical Sales, laboratory equipment, just Maryland
Medical Sales, half the country including. E. Canada, dialysis equipment
Quit and got into construction. Published in Fine Homebuilding.
Started and ran Title & Abstract Company. Got bored.
Bought a farm in NC, started raising show quality Arabians, qualified for the nationals (and did good)
Lost the farm when 3 partners wanted out.
Started teaching construction for Self-Help Housing.
Went to Atlanta, Sales in architectural ornamentation products. Climbed the corporate ladder. Selected to represent the company and worked with the White House architect on an office for the first lady.
Got fired because Boss thought I was after his job. I wasn’t.
Snapped up by a competitor, designed and helped build new 80,000 sq. ft. mfg. facility.
Went into debt $20,000 for my dream kitchen, then my boss went belly up, and I lost everything.

Been bumming around ever since 1992 making minimum money and now retired.

Lots of fun, personal adventures along the way, like sailing a 30 foot sailboat through Hell’s Gate in NYC down to the Chesapeake… LOL doubt I remember all of them!

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Hey Darius, you show me yours and I'll show you mine!!!! (list that is)

Spent the last couple hours scanning 285 slides into the computer. Two or three more sessions like that and most of the slides will be done, unless I find another box-full. By gollies I think it may be lunchtime. 'Catcha later.

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Darius you have had so many once in a lifetime opportunities! Are you sure you aren't part cat? How many lives have you really led?

I am just amazed, and for you to climb so high in so many totally different areas.

And Arabians too? I'm a Saddlebred gal, training, showing, breeding, breaking, selling. Ahhh I love the smell of a horse!

Wow Darius, what a life you have had, and you are still so young. Yeah yeah, I know not physically, but mentally and spiritually you are!

mg

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Darius...that is wonderful....No moss growing there...lol

You have never mentioned about the arabians....I had a 1/2 quarter horse....1/2 registered arabian.....what a love he was. He had the head, neck, tail and prancy gait of the arab and the chest of the 1/4 horse and smarter than 3 horses put together... He was like a big puppy.....spooked at everything though.....and spooked at the same bale of hay that was rotting in the field everytime he saw it.....dummy...

Thanks for sharing....

Holey Moley Darius (bowing up and down to you) you been around girl!!

I think you are a 'self starter' type of person. I on the other hand am a duckling (I like to follow...)

Come on Bal- show us your stuff.....

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Oops, I were a bit slow in posting weren't I . Just think, waiting another minute and I could have remained anonymous. Gave my word, so here's the list.
Born at an early age and had to overcome not being able to walk or talk.lol

Same thing @ Seattle City Health Dept.
Ran Secretary of State's Print shop in Olympia for a short time.

County Building/Community Development Dept. grading inspection

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Rob't... you got around as much as I did, LOL! But as a Navy Brat, it was part of the package.

Sure wish I'd had some printmaking background. That fascinates me.

Shell Oil put in a $3,000 photo lab for us when I worked in Geology at Johns Hopkins Univ. (left that out of the short form) and $3,000 bought a LOT in the 70's... I spent many hours playing in there. Wish I had learned more but I've forgotten what I DID learn, LOL.

Most of the folks on here are female and became Mothers, which generally took time away from a career. I was never a mother (by choice) having raised the 4 kids by the time I was 14 from my Dad's second marraige . Didn't want/need to have my own, although sometimes I regret it.

(Zone 8b)

Hi Y'all,
Next time I meet the resident of THAT house I'll pass on y'alls comments on his yard!! He was up to something with the coastguard when we were there so we didn't get to go inside.
For those of you interested in dogs here is my take on the GRCA National http://www.okusgoldens.com/national2005.htm . We had a blast - met some super people and had some fun, which is the main thing! Its taken me hours to label all those pictures - just hope I didn't make too many mistakes.
I think the highlight of the trip was "meeting" a real live wild Bald Eagle. He came quite close, but unfortunately not when the camera was in my hand. We had Dolphins join us on the Cape May/Lewes Ferry crossing too. I was impressed by the Chesapeake Bay bridge/Tunnel - 17 miles is quite a bridge!! Photo below
The trip has done me good - I feel much 'lighter' now - though the scales tell a different story!!
As an ex service brat and then a regular and regulars wife I got about a bit too. One and a half times round the world by the time I was 6. Wish I had been older then more of it would have stuck.

Both of you have done many interesting things. So glad you let us know. And for Darius, I know, you've got a lot of skills not mentioned in the resumé. You seem to be everywhere - even on the Canadian forum and knowledgeable on whatever you post about. It's always interesting to see what you have to say.

Ann (getting back off the computer now)

Ann, I'm just a bored retiree living alone waaaay out in the country, with nothing else to do but lurk and post all over DG, LOL. I probably get under many skins for being so visible and such a big mouth!

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Keep up the good work Darius. The more the better. Well, well. The rain is back. Now I don't have to mow the grass.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Hey new receipe was a hit - DH said he liked it! Copied it down for the receipe box.

DS just came over to hunt. I don't know why he is bothering - no deer in the woods- They are cutting it all down to put in an industrial park - yahoo... NOT.. We haven't seen a deer in the back 40 all summer long. Oh well, if he wants to sit up in a tree for hours on end- guess he can!

DH just went out to the barn to set up a painting station for me. I have two new plant stands and want to get the shelf part of it painted before I use it. I am hoping DH will assemble it for me while I am gone this weekend with the 'girls' (trip to stay in a house on Lake Mich - big goregous lake - can't see across it)

Are there such a thing as white morning glories? I have something blooming thats white- they maybe moonflowers as they are just beginning to bloom now and all my other MG are long gone. They are bigger than a MG and very prolific. What ever they are, I like them!

gotta go check what's happening in the barn!!

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Sarv, which recipe did your DH like?

Okus, that picture of the beach looks gorgeous! The sunshine on the water is so breathtaking, especially at this time of the year.

Darius, you seem to be a very well-rounded person in all trades and I think you should be proud of yourself. All the skills you have learned over the years can make it easier for you to live on your own, I think.
You are kind of right about mothers tho. I have/had 2 sons and spent by time raising them tho I worked too. But my first priority was them. I thoroughly enjoyed that time and am still going thru withdrawls (my youngest will graduate from hs this year) of not being able to watch their sports, activities, etc. The coming up empty nest stage is hard.

My life has been not that exciting but I did work for the Dept. of Agric./Forest Service. Those days were the fun days like with fighting forest fires, slash burning, planting new trees and then being able to go back later in years to see the trees grown up. I have been working for 2 grass seed co. since then and still do. Boring work but I have my freedom to do things on the side if needed to, especially during the kids days. No money but freedom.

Have been out in the garden trying to clean up some things before it rains again. Fall/winter is coming for sure here in Oregon. My dahlias are still going to town tho with the cooler weather. So enjoy the bouquets in the house still.

Well, off to maybe bake some cookies tonight. Haven't decided what kind to make but want some sugar, lol.

Covered or brought in any plants I didn't want to lose...just to be safe. We are expecting a low of 35 tonight, but we're in a weird area where the neighbors might get frost and we don't, or vice versa.

Hope you're all keeping warm!

I've taken photos of the front of the house where I rent the Hobbit Hole in the basement, and I'd like all of you to be able to see them, because my landlord has done some wonderful landscaping.

Don't want to post them here, takes up too much space. Any suggestions?

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well, you have been at this non stop today. This is my first time on, it was grocery/errand day and ran my legs off all day. Grocery shopped for me, DM and DMIL. DGD was with me, and by the time we got home and carried everybody's into the house, she said mamaw, do these people know how hard you work and do they appreciate it!! She is only 9 but she is wise beyond her years.

Took DM to church meeting tonight, pot luck, business meeting and program. She can't drive anymore, so I take her.

Just commented to DH tonight, between, DM, DMIL, GD, DH, DS, 4 fur kids, I don't have a minute to call my own, except when I am on computer at DG. Guess that is why I enjoyed my weekend at the Ky. RU. Noboby to take care of except me!!

Gosh Darius, Balvanie, DR, Sarv, you all have had such interesting careers. My resume is short and sweet, as I tended to stay put in one job, one place. Worked for a newspaper while in high school, doing layout, photos and proofing. Out of school, married, had DS, went to work in government. Went to college while being married, a mother and working full time. How I did that I do not know, but anyway finished. My career in government spanned 33 years, 31 of them spent working for various politicians. Mostly personnel work. I have managed political campaigns, and believe me I like to say I have seen "The Good, The Bad, The Ugly and the down-right disgusting. Have worked for politicians who were honest and above board, then some were corrupt, and some rode the slippery slope of being honest to becoming corrupt. The only political involvement I have now is that I vote EVERY election, that way I can complain all I want about those that may be elected and their performance below par.

Well tomorrow will be a lighter day. I have a chiropractors appointment and a gynology appointment to do the yearly girl thing. Then will take DGD home tomorrow afternoon. Then I plan to take the weekend slow and easy!! I think I deserve it after this hectic week.

Well too wordy tonight. Will shut up and go to bed, hopefully to sleep and NOT DREAM. Had some weird ones last night.

Good night all!

Millbury, MA(Zone 5a)

Wow, thanks Carol! I love those rainbows, but it never occured to me to try to take a picture of one, duh! Flowers look really nice too.

Since quite a few of us have been posting "resumes" lately, here's mine.
Underpresser, then bundle sorter in a clothing factory (summer work during high school)
worked in PR office of college I was going to be attending that Fall.
cafeteria worker in college
cook in a nursing home
nurse's aide in same nursing home (after quitting for a cross country trip, then returning to this area)
youth counselor at short-term group home
youth and family counselor at Youth Opportunities Upheld, Inc. (we worked with kids referred by juvenile court
retail sales clerk
manager, retail store
owner/operator retail hobby shop (for the past 20 years --- boy do I feel old every time I think about THAT one)

I thought I'd had quite a few work experiences until I saw YOUR list, darius!

Robert, loved the comment and this entire household agrees with you-------Far too many Bushes in that house!

I'd like to respond to more people, but I'm falling asleep at the switch and I have to get up very early for another craft fair tomorrow. Sweet dreams to all.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Julie, you were RIGHT! 2 days only and we are already beyond 150 posts... time for a new one, LOL.

Bonnie... finding time alone is always hard but the obverse is aloneness and boredom.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

DUH... I can be SO dense... just realized Robert's play on words about the White House. Hanging my head in shame...
