Oh Pati my aunt had both knees done at one time! She is doing great now and playing golf and tennisa again. I do hope you have a speedy recovery.
And good luck with the ballet you must be a wonderful dancer!! :-)

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Good luck , ballerina Pati, you will be able dancing in the front line again, wish I still could do when I took lessons for 6 years at a ballet school in Vienna, how did I ever do all that?

Julie, come right over I have some Chabaso Wheat Ciabetta we can dunk in to extra fine virgin olive oil added with a touch of 6 year old basamic vinigar, a lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes topped with crumbled Gorgonzola and basil dressing , angel hair mixed with sauted shrimp in olive oil shallots and garlic and served with a light marinara plus freshly sprinkled with Parmigiano-Reggiana ... So come over, I hate to eat alone !

maria= set out a plate for me- I'm coming too!!!

Hap - I went out and helped - I actually don't mind a little mowing - what peeves me is that he won't do the trim work the same night - I can't life the weed whacker with my bum arm. So I look at a beautiful lawn with tall stuff around my flower beds and pool area. Grrrr

pati - my mom had total knee replacement - then complained that she wished she'd done it years ago!! She said it was the first time she was pain free in 5 years. She still can't get down on her knees to wash her floors, but that is about the only thing she cannot do. Go for it girl!!

Saw the weather in North Dak - 15 inches of snow- oh man - that is just terrible!!! I'm not ready for that yet!!

Man, wish there was chat room tonight....

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh, Maria, I am salivating!!!

Hey, Sarv, I think you just snitched on yourself...didn't you have a bowl of ice cream at 9:30 this morning?!! Now a Frosty with sprinkles!!! What's your world coming to? By the way...that hot fudge shake I had a Culver's this afternoon was delicious!!!!!!!!!!! :-D

My husband always trims after mowing too. I think it make more sense to trim first then all the longs weeds get chopped up when you mow.

Greetings,

Been a few busy days with the OSO concert Monday evening. It went well, but the reviewer was not convinced about the validity of the Blumina movement. Even if he wasn't, I enjoyed playing it (and dedicating it, in my mind, to Maria). It is really beautiful.

Then yesterday and today were really busy at work trying to catch up there....

I've tried to catch up with the conversation and gave up with the messages from around 11 am today. I much agree with the comments that Maria doesn't look nearly her age. Somehow I don't think I will be a blessed when and if I reach that age.

Will try to stay caught up for awhile.

Ann

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Ann to think you thought of me while playing Mahler's Blumina movement has touched me greatly, thank you so very much, I shan't ever forget it..
Also your compliment about my age is appreciated but I do want to add, my daughter also looks much younger than her 58 years,

Darius you are invited too but hurry before everything is gone, :-))

Advance Warning of DG Downtime next Tuesday
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/549360/

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

How am I going to remember that until Tuesday Darius?

Not a productive day. Did some grocery shopping, started working on the fabric to cover the hassock, keep changing my mind about how to do it, but I think I've got it nailed now.

Welcome new GOBs or GOBettes, I've seen Magoobu on some other threads, mostly pets, but all are welcome. Someone mentioned the Xmas exchange, but there wasn't much interest last time, so I don't know if we want to pick up again now ....there is still time. I have only six names on the list, and one of them hasn't dropped in for a long while. Shall we just forget about it?

I posted something yesterday but the cybergremlins ate it....not surprising considering what the day was like! Thanks for the suggestions, Maria and Robert, I checked the outlet first, and it's fine. I have a DC10 that I've had for so long that the white has turned to ivory, but I thought it was time for a replacement. When the lid goes on, there is a little clip that pushes the spring down to activate the motor. The bowl goes on, but it appears they reversed the angle of the locking clips, and they won't go into the slot properly. Chinese engineering? I even went to Marshall Fields today to see one they had on display, to see if I could figure out what was wrong and if it was my error. Theirs locked the right way. sigh.

What else? Oh, set a plate for me Maria, that sounds wonderful! And I'm full of mashed potato/gravy/porkchop/corn and it still sounds good!!

Gotta go, Lost is on!!!

Thanks for the warning, darius. If I remember that far in the future it will save me a lot of swearing at Verizon or my computer!

kooger, yeah, I did check eBay and various on-line sources but the only thing I found was a bobbin for a "Davis long" that someone wanted $33.00 for! That's a tad more than I'm prepared to spend for a bobbin, especially since no dimensions were given and I'm not sure it would work with my machine. I really should check in once in a while though. Thanks for reminding me.

mg, thank you so much for saying you'll keep an eye out for these bobbins. I really appreciate it.

Babs, have to add my two cents worth, that's a really nice thing you're doing there---- making those "cuddlers" for people you've never even met. I think it takes something special to be a good nurse. I couldn't hack it ---nurse's aide was bad enough. One of my nieces is in her last year of training for it though.

Maria, you know, if you keep advertising like that, you'd best be prepared for a bunch of drooling DGers congregating on your front steps! (Specially me, since we both live in Massachusetts)

Picked all but one tiny baby eggplant today along with more plum and cherry tomatoes. I also picked my one pumpkin (otherwise known as "mutant teenage ninja squash" as it was supposed to be a yellow crookneck.) According to the weather reports for this area, I shouldn't have to worry about fr--t this week. It's a good thing since my butternut squash didn't even start to set fruit until I cut down the wild bergamot that was shading it out.

Hmmm, speaking of bergamot, I seem to have a second growth coming on now. Can someone please tell me how you're supposed to make tea out of it? Do you steep the fresh leaves or dry it first? I strongly suspect that it's an acquired taste anyhow. I tried chewing one of the leaves the other day. Ewwww! Maybe I should try to make an oil infusion instead to use in candles, etc.

I'm afraid to try the chat room again because I'm one of those people who thinks of the "snappy comeback" about a week later.

Oh yeah, hey darius, thanks for answering my question about your crafts. It sounds like you've done what I've always been tempted to do. "Gee, I'd like to try THAT!" Problem is I've already got way too much invested in tools and supplies for the ones that I'm already doing and I seem to always manage to make it into another area of WORK which tends to take the fun out of it somehow.

M5, you know it wasn't until you showed those miniatures of yours that the light dawned for me. Siamese, whoda thunkit! I'm a terrible sucker for felines and, boy, don't they know it! Sounds like today was a little better for you anyhow --- hopefully it continues on an upward trend.

Ann, I admire your energy. I just don't know what to say half the time because I think I'm just one of those people who's just naturally allergic to classical music!

Okay, enough chatter from me and I know I've left people out. Please don't be offended, I'm just starting to feel lilke I've been running my mouth far too long. G'night!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

McCool, come down here any time I'd love it, but I hope you are not too terribly allergic to classical music, have it on all day and half the night.

Gee what a gabby bunch!!. Well , I finished off my day by going to DM and installing edging around the flower bed that I refurbished. Soil was washing over her sidewalk at one point. Sure hope this works.

I bought one of those pedometers at Walmart last week, and had it on today. Just in a day's time, I walked 2.6 miles!! I sure don't need to "start walking" for health reasons.

Whoever is having that meal of salad and pasta, please include me too. Would much rather have carbs than sugar. Nothing is any better than home-made rolls with real butter, or a fresh salad with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Made eggplant parmesia for supper tonight. Was good, even DGD liked it.

SIL called tonight to tell me that my grocery store is closing!! Oh, no, I like their meat, the only other store in town is Kroger, and I HATE IT. It is so huge that by the time you finish shopping, you have aching feet and legs. And they don't have quality meats either.

Babs, what a great thing you did by making that chemo cuddler. I have a first cousin who is currently undergoing chemo. It doesn't sound too good for him, as it has spread to the lymph nodes.

Our weather is supposed to change tomorrow about noon. Today was in the high 80's and tomorrow a cold front is supposed to cool us to the 60's. Wish I could find a place where it stays about 72 all year!! Perfect weather for me.

Well I am off to bed as I have a busy day tomorrow. Grocery for DM and DMIL as well as me. That will take me about 3 hours. I JUST HATE TO SHOP FOR GROCERIES!! If someone would shop, I would gladly do the cooking. I tend to buy the same things week after week.

Good night all, see you in the morning!!

Weather Update!!! NO FROST for us tonight! :-D (Wouldn't it be nice if everyone - the weather prognosticators - would use the SAME model? I guess that's why we have lots of local channels so we can get lots of conflicting info. hehehe)

Maria...did you see me fly through the door and grab my *wonderful* meal? I was there! Just couldn't stay too long. ;-)

Thanks for the early warning Darius. I'll probably forget...but maybe it'll dawn on me half way through the day and I'll quit trying. :-)

There's nice chill in the air right now...and every now and then a little rain shower. I think I'll go to bed and enjoy it.

McCool, I'm right there with you being one of those people whose snappy comebacks come a week too late.

Re being allergic to Classical music, I suspect that you haven't heard the right stuff at the right time. It's vast and varies widely. I certainly like some more than others.

We' ve had record-breaking heat (for October) all week. Too bad the days aren't a bi tlonger to go with it. There's lots to do in the garden, but I've not had time to do much lately. I DID get the last hosta from my trade with Sanannie planted and put a mini nosta which had been in a pot into the garden. It's big enough now that it will survive quite well, I think. The pot is a lovely ceramic and if left outside will certainly break in our cold winter.

Much to cut back. Still have all that dirt I got a couple of weeks ago. it's in a garden, but piled up way too high. Will spread it around the other gardens a bit, but after we have a frost and the annuals come out. And when I do get that garden under control, I have quite a few tulip and daffodil bulbs to plant.

This is our Thanksgiving weekend coming up. I hope the weather holds and I should be able to find some time in the garden though DD, SIL and grand-twins will be here for turkey on Monday.

Goodnight all.

Ann, I have to tell you the same thing I told Maria... I love classical music although I never heard ANY until high school orchestra (and I wasn't musical). Never figured out where my love of it came from. Somehow it got in my blood, and has remained for almost 50 years. Most I like, some I don't... in fact I dislike organ and harpsicord. Love many of the hearty Russian composers and also the opposite like "Pavane for a Dead Princess"...

But I'm so bad with names... just know what I like when I hear it....

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Hey Sarv! You up? I'm the early bird today. Went to bed at 10:30 and woke up at 12:30 and have been waiting to go back to sleep ever since. Finally gave up. Not happening. Enjoyed the dinner, Maria, thanks! All things I like.

Checked the Weather channel, showing the snow that hit N.D. Wow. Hope it doesn't sneak over here! There's much to do outside yet, and now it's dark so early there's no evening time and the days have been meltingly hot!

So, Mc Cool, you've translated my name....LOL We are suckers for siamese, but we are down to four and if my DS and DIL take Max back (Max is his cat, long story told back in session ?) we'll be down to three but changing my name would be a huge amount of work and I'm bone lazy. Besides, it wouldn't surprise me if we got back up to five at some point, and then I'd have to do it all over again. Like dusting. Which I also avoid.

Good morning to all you late sleepers. I'm going to go open a book and see if that puts me out.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Ya, I'm up, but with a rotten stiff neck. This body is falling apart from head to toe! I'm trying to type with a heating pad wrapped around my neck.

Started my baby afghan last night and I am happy with the pattern. I am not sure gals nowadays even like knitted things, but I need something to do with my hands during the off gardening season. Did about a zillion of those scarves last year and surely don't need anymore of them!

Nothing fun planned for today. I could take empty cans back, but somehow that doesn't sound fun! Still haven't planted my 4 perennials yet. Maybe today will be the day.

I love listening to music- no special kind (not that hard rock stuff tho) We have a local 'oldies' station that I have on often. I am hooked on talk radio tho!! I listen to WGN all night long (out of Chicago)

Whoever was making the blankies for the chemo patients- kudos to you. I am so fearful of that terrible disease. My dad suffered an awful death with it. I don't know why I worry so about it- what will be will be - and my worrying won't change a thing! But you know me- world's biggest worrier!! I've often thought of asking the doc for something to get rid of the worries, but I fear she will think I am a wacko!!

Just heard the news about a spy in the White House. What next.

Well time for my morning peanut butter and mug of hot cider. I'm craving a gooey sweet roll - anybody have one to share today??

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Pati

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Ahhhhh Classical Music...I about drove my 'Hillbilly music loving' father up the wall with my 78rpm recordings of fabulous (IMO) chamber music when I was probably 13 or 14. For the life of me, I can't even remember *where* I got them. But back in Okla in the 50's students were treated to classical music / symphony ochestra concerts by the public schools. Ann...you're right "the right thing at the right time" I've always loved 'Peter and the Wolf' just because our educational system saw fit to introduce it to us. And while watching the Disney channel with my DGD last week, I realized that the "Little Einsteins" have classical music backing up their educational programs. Now, wanna hear something cool. DGD (2 y/o) was sitting at the computer with me while I sampled a Little Einstein clip online. The music was classical and all of a sudden she started a 'chair dance' in time with the music! (Now, to me, *that's* cool!)

Pati...I figured you were kidding with your comment about getting back to ballet after the surgery. :-)

Jody...Sometimes I think my DH purposely gives me the wrong weather infomation just to get me 'going' so HE can get stuff crossed off HIS to-do list. LOL (I has happy about that 40's low we got last night...I forgot to bring something inside. :-D)

M5...I was wondering where and how you got your screen name. ;-)

Sarv...don't worry about the DR *thinking* you're "wacko"...LOL (We already KNEW that! j/k)

Nothing on my list for today. Except maybe to make sure that the plant I forgot yesterday gets back into the house. So I'll probably do my regular chores at my regular time and then sit on my arse making plans for next year's gardens. (It's always fun for me to look back over my notes and LOL at what I *thought* I'd get done.)

Have a GREAT Day!!

I am pleased some of you enjoy listening to classical music, I do not know many people that do and belief me when I say that was one of my biggest cultur shock when I first arrived in this country.
I told my children when I am at home they must listen to the music I like but when I am not in the house they could please themselves with any music they would like to listen to. Now they do appreciate that old rule. They love classical music almost as much as I do, one of my GD major is music in college, so you see it did some good.
Am off to the chiropractor again, wish I never did all that cleaning up in my garden, now I am paying the piper.
You ned a nice massage, Sarv, it will get read of your stiff neck, go to it!

The trip pics will be up today - I'll post a link, but you may all be bored to death! Thay are mainly of dogs!!

Okus, that's a nice house you have there. I'd have to say though, that there are too many bushes and not enough flowers.

Sarv, maybe some ice cream along with the peanut butter and hot cider would ease the pain.

Pati, a weird sense of humor is a trait to be admired!!

Hi ho Juli-o, a two year old doing a 'chair dance' would be a sight to see. Too bad it's one of those things that we seldom have the camera ready for. Hope your day is invigorating and next year's garden design just pops into mind.

Aria, Most of my 33 rpm records, except the 14 volume Beethoven Bicentennial collection and Furtwangler's 19 record version of the Ring are still in half a dozen boxes. Wish I had the Ring on CD, maybe someday. Saw the cycle twice at the Seattle Opera, once in German and once in English. I miss playing all those old records. The Albert Schweitzer Bach organ albums are great. He was a wonderful organist in addition to all his medical accomplishments.

Weather is fine; new tires on the car; smoked ham hocks and white beans with crusty rosemary bread, salad and creamy sinfully rich St Andre Brie cheese for din din last night; Dr appt. for the old knee at 3:30; and decided to try to scan more slides and pics into the computer since I ain't climen no ladders for awhile. Guess that covers this mornings activities. Everyone have a swell day today.

Robert, Too many bushes! ROFLMAO all the better line because I had to glance up to see what you were talking about. ya got me.

Pati, knew that remark went with "But doctor, witll I be able to play the violin?'' And in my childhood daydreams I was a ballerina... Loved 'The Red Shoes' so much as a kid. Imagine my disappointment when I reached 5'8'' and realized there'd be no 'pas de deux' in my future. Lift me? there wasn't a boy in my class as tall as me. /;-)~

Chilly out there this morning but promises to warm to 75* this afternoon. I am so glad for that as DD ~'Spin arrived at right around midnight for a wks stay. 750 miles is a long trip for a single days drive. It was fun seeing her delight in all the changes that are due to her prompting. [and demolishing while I was gone in June].

Think I'll fix us bagels and cream cheese and awaken her, naw, let her sleep in. See ya later, Blooms

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Nice to be that tall, Blooms, my husband said one time. there is only one thing wrong with you, 'you are not tall enough, have to bend over togive you a kiss' lol. But when I wear high heels I am as tall as you, Blooms, but he still had to bend over.
I dreamed of being the girl in "The nutcracker suite" while taking ballet lesson , but I never was picked from the line, guess I was not good enough :-((

Okus, I had the good fortune to have a personal 2 hour tour of that house by the (then) current architect in the late 80's when I worked on a project with him for The First Lady.

Did you take the public tour?

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

12:00 noon - LunchTime. I made grilled cheese, with onions inside, served with a ton of dill pickles. Anybody want one?? I am multi-tasking- eating and typing!

Bal lol - after getting home from the workout place I thought to myself- I NEED something sweet!! I found a smidgon of ice cream left and ate it right out of the container. One container down.

Aria- I absolutely LOVE massages. I've only had a professional one done once in my life. It was heaven, but I left there covered with oil! Had a facial once too and don't care for those at all. My DH gives me a back rub nightly, but they never last long enough for me!! I want the full body kind, and he only does the back and neck area. He does have strong hands tho and I so appreciate them.

It is so cold out here today = I am bundled up inside and may just crank on the heating pad and sit and read this afternoon.

My plan for the remaining of this year is to try one new receipe per week. Tonight I am gonna do scalloped potatoes/ham. I just usually toss that together, but tonight I am actually going to follow a receipe. We'll see if there's a difference. Don't want to start out with something wild now!!

Well, the mouse that I heard in the wall this past weekend is making itself known. I couldn't figure out what was smelling like a sour wash cloth. I went around the whole house trying to find the culprit - then I remembered the mouse. Wonder how long I'll have to put up with that now!! The joys of country living. Now where was the mouser cat when all of this was going on??

Julie- I know I am wacko!! LOL I just don't want the doc to know!! But I enjoy myself- so who cares??

Exercise buddy is going on a 2 day wine tasting trip, so I dont know if I will work out Mon and Tues - trying to decide.. hmmm laying around or huffing and puffing.....

time for a couple of chapters of the book I'm reading..

Darius- what have you NOT done!! You have had more jobs than anyone I know. In fact, why don't you list everything you've done...

Here's mine (pretty short)
- babysat all my growing up years (took care of a family where the father had polio and the daughter had CP) Both in wheel chairs), plus several other bs jobs

- worked at Meijer (grocery/clothes/tools etc) store doing cash registering and bagging. Walked off the job when they wouldn't let me use the bathroom -

- 3 yrs doing secretarial work - loved it and had they had an opening, I would have stayed

- teaching for 33 yrs in the same school system. - part of a year in Kindergar. and the rest in 3rd grade

Not a whole lot, but loved enjoyed most everything I've attempted!!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

julie88 - the 88 got anything to do with piano keys?

maria - looks like the start of a lovely autumn site. My back yard maple is just beginning to show some red. Seems that the colors here are a bit later than usual - maybe because of the hot summer we've had. But I have a yellow rose with about 6 blooms on it and another rose with quite a few big buds. I think I'll cut a few and bring them in where I can smell them. A rose has no place in my yard if it doesn't smell good.

re chamber music (and myabe classical music in general), we have Pinchas Zukerman leading the local fully professional orchestra - the National Arts Centre Orchestra. He's sometimes controversial within the orchestra, but he attracts a lot of new people to concerts. We also, in the summer, have the world's largest chamber music festival - http://www.chamberfest.com/ (The Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival). Last summer there were 120 concerts in 15 days including a complete cycle of the Shostakovich String Quartets played by the Borodin String Quartet. This has been a HUGE success because:
- the price is right - most concerts are accessible through the purchase of a pass
- it is casual - no dressing up in churches which sometimes get hot. Shorts are de rigeur as are bottle of ice water and fans
- the music is excellent

Most seats are not reserved and the line-ups begin a couple of hours before the concert. People now bring elaborate kits which can include a table and chairs and dinner with wine while waiting. (Get there early enough and they can generally park close.) Even for those whose gear is not so elaborate, there is a lot of socializing that goes on the the lines. Mostly, I think it is a success because it has broken down some of the barriers that seem to make chamber music something for the elite and people turn out in droves. (If any of you want to visit Canada's national capital and take in some of the festival next summer, let me know).

We've got a great day here. It's my day-off from the Food Cupboard but for once I'm not running around all over too badly. Should get out and do something in the garden as I think we are promised rain for the weekend- our Thanksgiving weekend.

I would have walked off the job too if they wouldn't let me know the bathroom.

I wouldn't call teaching for 33 years "not a whole lot". If you stuck it out for 33 years, you were probably pretty good at it and good teachers are some of the most important people we have in how you shape and influence young children. Well done, especially if you enjoyed what you were doing.

Short day at work - only put in an hour and had to go home - got a UTI on top of the divertic. sheesh! have to go pick up cipro to kill all the bad guys playing the drums inside.

darius - i'd love to see that list!

Mine's pretty mundane - handicapped kids' home as a aide; greenhouse -sales, planting, watering, etc.; pickin' chickens - 10 to 15,000 birds a night at 3 uncles' broiler farms; motel - cleaning rooms; milking - 500 cows per day; (those were all during school years); typing for a newspaper; daycare for 12 years; nursing home aide; cookie route; relay opr. That's it.
