P.S. Anyone up for a "Coffee and..." daily thread? First one up has to start it! (Or the last one to go to bed. LOL And I think that means Sarv would get the job.)

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

darius, I never saw an answer to my post about your living situation. Did you ever find anything affordable and move away from the apartment you were renting when I visited you?
BTW, I really am leaving for the coast in the morning. Wilmington is fine and even Wrightsville Beach is OK, except for the usual beach erosion.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

No, Betty... I am still here. Landlord has promised to get the heater checked.

Meanwhile my sister is again thinking of selling and moving up somewhere in this general area and planning that I shall ive with her. We'll see.

hi wood ...
i'm not selling my house, or moving.
the dh got a job in virginia, and he's
moving there. i'm staying put, keeping
the homefires burning, and whatnot.

can i stowaway in your trunk ? i love
the beach :)

aria, what a beautiful place to live. You will have fun with the gardens!

My mother came thru her pacemaker surgery just fine. I didn't go up but kept in touch by phone all day long. Am so glad.

It is very wet outside. It rained good so don't have to water anything for awhile now. Hope this isn't the start of fall here. :(

Am making some sourdough bread from Costco in the oven. I smell it and is will be so good with butter. Am not sure what else to have for dinner tho. Maybe some more green beans from the veg. garden. Planted way too many this year, not going to next year, lol.

Have a good weekend all.
Carol (DR)

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Carol (D.R.) I'm SOOOOO happy that everything has gone well with your Mom. (((( ~ Hugs~ ))))

~julie~

(Zone 8b)

Hi the other Carol. Glad something is finally going right for somebody! Hope your mum is soon up and about.
I have been up to my eyes this week. Finally persuaded our builders that we do have a problem. They have been saying for the last 18 months that being foreign I just don't understand Texas houses. How they all move and 'settle'. I kept saying not like this they don't. Anyway they finally sent a structural engineer, he ordered a plumbing test, and lo and behold we have a sewer leaking under the house!!
So now they have to locate the leak, dig up the slab to fix the leak and then repair and support the foundation!! And we were advised to buy a new house because they are less trouble than old ones!! I want one thats 200 years old - if its still here after that long its going to last a while yet!
Nothing compared to som folks woes I know but.....Its enough to make a girl eat chocolate! Speaking of which there are a couple of bars on the counter.
Carol

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Can't open the previous thread, so I don't know what's gone on today. I took DMIL to Dr today, and he put her on oxygen at nighttime so that she can breathe better. Seemed to like my Dr. Then did the Walmart thing, and on to the grocery, all this while MIL sat in the car waiting for me. It was pretty warm so didn't waste time as I normally would. I had about an hour between the time I got home and the time I needed to leave to pick DGD for the weekend. She is riding her horse in a parade tomorrow and is so excited about it. She said before she went to bed that she hoped she dreamed about the parade, then got up to go to it. We had to braid the horse's mane and tail tonight, and tomorrow morning we will put ribbons on the braids. This is a small town thing, but to her it is really big. The parade will last about 45 minutes and have several floats and entrys in it, but to her it is the "WORLDS CHAMPIONSHIP". She told me that I needed to get my camera ready, and by all means not FORGET it. LOL

Well it has been a busy day, so I am off to bed.

Rest well all. Good Night.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Thanks Julie!
You too, okus (Carol). Geez, you are having horrible problems. Sewage?! Yuck. Hope it all works out for you. Don't think that was a very nice comment about being foreign that you don't understand things. What a slap in the face if you want my opinion.
DR (Carol)

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

DR didn't mean to ignore you, so glad everything went well with your mom. She will be up and about in no time, and back home to resume her regular schedule. I know how anxious you must have been. Now relax, put your feet up, and if you are like me wait for the next crisis!!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

You be surprised, Daisy, how often I have been patronized by Americans saying I do not understand because I am a foreigner still hear it some times though I have lived here for 60 years, lol. if they only knew how much we foreigners do know !
When younger I used to say, perhaps I do not know much about this country but I bet you know nothing about mine , probably don't even know where it is. LOL
Next time, Okus, try that one on some of these ignoranamus people!
And, thank you for the compliment about my house, Daisy
Maria

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Maria, your new home is lovely, but there is something special about old houses, maybe it's absorbed all the happy memories of people who have been there before. I have a connection to every house we ever had, and sometimes go and look to see that they are being properly taken care of. Our last one had lovely perennials, and the new owner simply mowed them down. I couldn't believe it! I would gladly have gone and dug them out and bought sod for them if they were so in love with grass. Lilies, hosta, glads, iris, peonies, clematis, roses, etc. all gone. Cretins!

DS is now sitting on two offers on his little house, one is over the asking price, one is right on it. Won't know more until late tomorrow and someone else has asked to see it in the morning, too. DS is getting edgy, he's not accustomed to dealing with paperwork and multiple phone calls! DIL is in seventh heaven!!

Sarv, our mums have little mums growing all around them, they have been my best survivors, so DH just dug up the small ones and put them in new dirt, with some starter and fertilizer. There are so many, if they don't root, there are plenty more to divide in spring. We have done this before, knowing that spring is better, but have had good luck so far. Knock on wood.....

Sewage! Oh Gross!! We had that situation in a house that was built on a slab, no basement. They were doing a "deep tunnel" nearby and we think it shifted some of the underground strata in our area and our main sewer line cracked. When I sold the house, I had to take something off the price to repair the sewer line. I thought pursuing the Metro Sewer (read city hall) for compensation would be a lost cause.

Glad for all those who have had a good day, and hoping for a better one tomorrow for those who didn't. Time for me to crash.... maybe a nibble of that chocolate before I go!

maria! what a GREAT response to those who would insult
your intelligence ... "i bet you know nothing about mine" - i love it.
you & Carol both probably knew more about the united states before you ever came over here than most (supposedly) educated americans ever do.

and, would i ever love to do perennial borders along that lovely drive to your house :) i LOVE that back porch, too.

goodnight, chet. goodnight, david.

Good Morning - up bright and early - time to start on the allergy pills I guess- all stuffed up. We have DGS 2nd soccer game. It is foggy out, may need to take a rain coat to stay dry!

aria - your house is lovely - oh, I too am itching to plant something along your driveway - a band a daylilies?? And your back deck - I think we should all meet there for morning coffee - I have a good coffee cake that I'll bring. I think I must put my roots down deep. I grew up in the same house for my early life and when I married, moved for three years into family homestead, and then moved 1/2 mile down the road where we have remained for 34 yrs. I still returned to my home before marriage and check it out. I've often thought about asking the people if I could tour the inside. Thank goodness it is kept up wonderfully. But , man does it look small!!

DR - phew - mom is ok. - glad to hear that. Medical proceedures at her age would make anyone nervous.

PU - did someone say sewage. No thanks, I'll pass on that one for sure. All I can say, is what a mess!! We had our septic system drain come above ground once. I couldn't figure out where that bad smell was coming from. The dog kept rolling in it...yuck. Had to lay a new drain field - mighty pricey too.

DH got the cold shoulder last night- funny thing is that they only caught 1 fish!! LOL LOL He said "I didn't know you REALLY wanted to go!" - ya right I thought. My birthday and anny are next week - I better get a nice big gift - in fact I already know what I want. I may just go get it for myself...

defo - hope DGD does a great job in that parade! Love small town stuff! Our small town has a huge 4th of July parade - Last year it took over 1 for it to finish! Instead of throwing candy, they come along side with buckets and give you some. Adults get bottles of water - nice gesture I think! I always tear up when the band plays or the old soldiers walk by.

I need to cut down my gardens - they are looking mighty sad. Maybe I'll get the oomph to do it today!! Pass the chocolate - might as well start the day out right!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Good Morning everyone! You are all invited to have breakfast or lunch or dinner on my back porch you can view 20 acres of my land from there lots of lawns and woods and a nice path to my daughter's house on land we gave her, but it must be potluck have nothing to eat in the hous, since DH died I have not cooked anything for myself.
The picture of my house was taken right after we moved in, hence no flowers but there are lots of them now such as daylilies along part of the driveway, had to smile at your suggestion, Sarv, you are so right!
I took many pictures of this place but unfortunately when this computer needed to be repaired because it cought a virus I lost most of the older ones. Daylilies and Azaleas are gracing the porch in the back.
So far we have had just a drizzle from Ophelia but I think we shall get more from it later.

these roses I transplaned from the farm house, where my DH grand mother planted them they are at least a 100 years old, my daughter will take them some day. The old house was where his grand parents lived, GF was a veterinarian

Well folks, back from the parade, "undressed" the horse and turned him out to pasture. I am trying to cook something for supper tonight and dinner tomorrow, so I can make one session out of it. BTW, DGD did well the first 1/2 mile of the parade, but then Midnight-the horse just decided he didn't want to go any further! So she had to be constantly kicking him to make him finish. Just at the finish of the parade, he justs starts doing circles in the middle of the street. DH to the rescue. She was very pleased though.

Sarv, and you are still speaking to your DH? BTW it was me who has possession of the 2x4, yell if you need it.

Well off to do some errands, so will check in later.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

defo- send the 2x4 - I STILL want to use it!!

Went to DGS soccer game and I acted like a pouty teenager...(can't believe I was sooo bad) Sat down next to DS and did say HI, then didn't say much of anything for the next hour. Oh, I did too talk - I moved my chair back from the group and called my sister on my cell. Now, we talk at least an hour every Sat at 9am and that's when the game was. I'm not gonna give my my weekly chat with her (she lives in a different state) Only chatted for about 20 min, and did watch the game while chatting. But it was rude of me....but I'm not sorry in the least..

Did receive the biggest box of goodies from Daisy (hey thanks Daisy - I needed something to smile about - check in the mail too - but won't be picked up until Monday.)

DH just chopped down corn shocks for me to put up front with my pumpkins. He knows he is in the dog house. I overheard him telling DS that he went fishing and DS said "how come you didn't call me!" DH said - oh great, now I have two people mad at me!! Silent treatment will continue for some time.

I've several daylily proliferations and I want to do something with them = think I will chop them off and stick them in water and see if they will root.

Collected some seeds from the new coneflowers- meadowbrite and sunset- does anyone know if they are sterile or not?? They were gorgeous and I want a big patch of them.

Gotta go take a look at the budget and see where all our $$ is going to - must have a hole in the pot somewhere!!

(Zone 8b)

M5 ours is on a slab too - we have no basement. Most Texas houses don't, something to do with the soil round here I think. I can't say I'm looking forward to them using Jackhammers inside my home, but I don't want to go away and leave them to it either. I need to know what they find and how well they clear it up!! At least the builder is picking up the tab, but that doesn't help with the hassle.
DGS had his first soccer match of the season today, boy was it hot and that was just watching! They all came up for a swim in the pool after the game to cool off. Much complaining because the water temp was only 79. We had a very cool day yesterday, which coupled with the overnight low caused the water temp to drop from the 86 its been running at. I prefer it cooler, I feel more like actually swimming rather than just floating about turning into a prune.

DS just had a house disaster too - opened the garage door and instead of sliding up in a gentle curve, it folded in half like a sandwich! and it won't unfold. Now of course he has to replace it, and as they have a 2 door garage he will have to do both as they can't match it either. I wonder what is next!!

That is a beautiful rose Maria, do you know what it is called? Looks like one of the old fashioned "cabbage roses", I love those. Does it smell? I love the house too, both of them, even the small one has a lot of space really and it does have character too.
The photo is off the garden we left in England, it took around 12 years to get like that though so there is time for this one to come on!!

There is a curry finishing cooking in the slow cooker, should be done for dinner, with boiled rice and Naan bread if I can be bothered to make it. There is loads so there should be some cyber curry on the counter shortly.

Thank you, Okus, I do not know the name of the roses, all I know is they are very old and have the most heavenly scent that spreads all over the yard.
Your garden in England is lovely, like so many I have seen over there while visiting the UK many times and have fallen in love with it.
Scotland was also one of my favotite countries, it reminded me of my own Austria.

Well folks my DS (twin) just got back from a 15 day trip to Scotland. She called awhile ago and she got me some seeds!! She bought some and some she "borrowed"LOL She put the seeds in empty cigarette packages in her luggage. No problems with customs, except she lied through her teeth!! One is called Veronica or common name hebe. Of course she got some heather and a lily she described as orange with flowers the size of a fingernail, that blooms on the stalk. She said it had about 25-30 blooms per plant. And all are sweet smelling. She is going to e-mail me the pics, and if I am having a sufficiently smart day, will post them.

Sarv the 2x4 is on the way. You really should invest in one of your own, cut down on postage that way. I will need it back just as soon as you finish with it, as you never know when you will need it again. Just one fish, ROTFL!! Serves him right.

Well still slaving in the kitchen, just took a short break to catch up. Will talk again after supper.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Nice pic, Maria. Where do you come from in Austria? It's one of my favourite countries. I also like Scotland too and identify with my Telford ancestry even though it's just a small part of my background. We spent some time there about a year ago to celebrate the imfamous 60th birthday. Made a scientific study of Scotch as well - two different ones each evening and we sipped and compared and made notes. ;-)

okus, sorry about the house problems. Hope they are resolved as quickly as possible and with as little disruption as possible.

Have just been driven in from the garden for the second time today by rain. Have soaked two sweat-shirts right through. This time I'm thoroughly muddy and think I'll quit and take a bath. We are finally seriously lifting sod for my new garden and I've been pulling out violets, sedum and forget-me-nots which have proliferated around my lilacs. Plan to transform that area into hosta beds. Have 11 new hostas as a result of a swap with Sanannie last week and have to find a place to put them. Now that the grant application for the food bank I run is complete, I can work in the garden with a clear conscience. ;-)

Rehearsals for Ottawa Symphony start tomorrow. Our first concert, on Oct. 3, will feature Mahler's 1st Symphony (with the Blumina Movement) and Songs of a Wayfarer (also by Mahler)

Ann

Carol, your garden was lovely. When I was in the UK in 1976 I fell in love with the cottage gardens, and that has been my inspiration ever since. I love the old scented roses, newer ones have more petal count, more disease resistance, but seldom have much scent. DD doesn't think she will be able to make the Nationals this year, she still has two of her litter of nine puppies at home, besides her grown dogs, and with her big van getting such bad milage, gas would be hugely expensive, on top of motel and other expenses. She was dying to meet you.

Some snobby guy came to look at her two remaining puppies which are adorable and said "So, what's wrong with these that nobody bought them?" Needless to say, she was beyond offended. She guarantees her pups for hip/ eye/ etc. and would always take them back if there was a problem.. She brushed him off and told me there is no way she would have sent a puppy home with a jerk like him. Since DS and DIL will have a bigger house and yard soon, she might give them one of her big males who is a super sweet dog but not brilliant...LOL They would be thrilled...

Been putzing around outside, hanging clothes, (won't be able to do that much longer!) deciding where to put the hardy hibiscus to survive our arctic winds, and the lilies I picked up. DH and his buddy worked on the fallen branch and sawed it all up, and are gone to haul it away and pick up wood chips for the next section of the weed destroyed front tier.

Went to check on my one producing tomato plant, and found a visitor. He and his friends ate holes in a half dozen of the green ones. He won't be back. Looked to see if there were more liike him, but didn't see any . Could one do this much damage? What can I use that won't be detrimental to the remaining tomatoes? Ugh. Nasty looking . Cut worm?

Can't blame you for being ticked off Sarv....I hate those halfhearted "come if you want to" invitations, like it's such a nuisance to have us tag along. My usual response to that sort of thing is not to be around when DH returns. Go to a movie, go out to eat somewhere, drop in on kids or whatever, just so there's an empty house and no dinner waiting. And even then, I wonder if he notices I'm not there!!!

Maria, I have written one of my long trivial posts and hit the wrong key and had it completely disappear....and started over. Or said I was posting a picture, and forgot to browse for it....Blame it on the computer, can't be us!!

Speaking of pictures, here's my visitor shortly before I cheerfully ground him into mushy green goo with my nine and a halfs.

yuk, Meezer, I had plenty of these miserable worms on my tomatoes this summer, killed them all!

Ann I am through and through Viennese, born, brought up and educated there . No need to tell you with music in my heart, we say every child born in Vienna is born with a baton in his hand, LOL.
Wish I could listen to Mahler's 1 st with the andante allegretto 'Blumine', it is one of my favorites though I am mostly devoted to Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Haydn not necessarily in that order.
Am also an opera fan, never could get enough of them. Bdecause of WW II i never had the oportunity to learn an instrument, they were not available by the time I wanted to study one of them.
Maria

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Deforcat could "a lily she described as orange with flowers the size of a fingernail, that blooms on the stalk" be crocosmia?

(Zone 8b)

My thoughts too Darius, but I would have called it Montbretia. Grows from a corm and grows the new one on top of the old one. It grows like a weed in Cornwall and the west country. The most famous variety is called Lucifer.
M5 its a pity your DD isn't going to make the National - maybe next year. As for that guy with the pups, she's better off without him! There are quite a few like that I'm afraid. My stock answer was that I always kept one back for myself, in case I wanted to keep it, and naturally it was the one I thought was best. As I was not going to keep it after all, if they had chosen that one they could have had it, but being as they were so rude they couldn't have any! Usually upset them and made them want one but I never gave in - didn't need the hassle.
Carol

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

I guess that's pretty much her attitude, she is becoming her mother, and as a result has very little patience with people like that ...And I say, Good On Her!!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Okus, my crocosmia is called "Lucifer"...

(Zone 8b)

Thats it http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/707/ Beautiful!

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well guys you have really been busy today.

Okus, sorry about your sewer problem, and they are going to use a jack hammer in the house. Oh, that hurts my ears already. I loved your answer about your being foreign.

Aria, been in this country longer than most younguns, stick up for your heritage. Just because you live here doesn't mean you aren't loyal to your country. BTW we're glad to have you. Your house is lovely, I can make it most any day to have lunch on the porch, just let me know, beautiful view. And Lovely rose!!

Meezer, hope your DS sells the house for the bigger offer, extra $$ for downpayment etc. I have a lot of baby mums this year. Don't remember that happening before. Is it better to move them now, or wait until spring?

Molly, what were you chuckling about in my post? Don't tell me you have never used the 2x4. I've found that they don't always solve the problem, just gets his attention!!. BTW, sorry about you having to move. I have been watching your

Changes II forum, looks like folks are doing some research on your behalf. I don't have anything new to suggest, but I would opt for the larger travel trailer.I stayed in DH's brother's several years back on vacation, and I think it would be a doable temporary dwelling. That way you could be on the property and overseeing things, and drumming up business.

Viola Ann yippee-rain. We need some here, the weather guy has threatened us the last 3 days, and it has't happened yet. I watered everything well tonight, so we are sure to have a torrential rain this pm.

Darius, Okus, DS is supposed to be sending me pics, but hasn't yet. Okus, you said it grew like a weed in Corwall, is it a flower or weed? Don't want anything invasive or something that I have to continually keep after to keep it in bounds. How about the others I mentioned, Do you know anything about them?

Darius, have you heard from any of your tests? I am anxiously awaiting them. Don't forget tommorrow.

Well it was a busy day with the parade and all, so I am going to try to go to bed soon. DGD was dead on her feet tonight, didn't have an argument out of her about going to bed.

You all rest well, dream good things, and awaked refreshed, my desire for all.

Goodnight

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Okus, Darius that is beautiful, sure hope that is it. If I get the pic, I will post.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Hey, Sue (Sarv), am glad that the box got there ok. You guys talk about that 2 x 4. I could use it at times with my now 18 year old son. Still being a pain in the a*ss. Can't wait until he graduates from hs in June. I agree with M5 about if you don't get to go and have fun with them all, you just do what you want then. Have fun your way.

Defoecat, thanks for your comments about my mom. All is going well. After you send the 2 x 4 to Sarv, I am next in line, lol. Sure, it is cheaper to go buy your own 2 x 4, but it won't be the "special DG" one, lol.

Molly, I like your "chuckle". I can see you doing that with your Bud Lite in your one hand and the other hand typing on the computer. lol

I spent the day at Farmers market (lots of fruit ripe now, plums, apples, pears, etc), picked some grapes at a u-pick place (they are so, so sweet), went to a couple garage sales (came up pretty good, got several large ceramic pots for plants for $1, and an end table for $2 (which needs a piece in the center replaced-would like to maybe get a stained glass piece to put in there), and of course, stopped at a local nursery and got some good deals on plants. Got for $1.50 each - 2 purple lobelia cardinals (sp?), hydrangea for $3, a raspberry bush for $2, and a couple ground covers for $1.50. Plus some fert. for my poor plum tree that has yellow in the middle of the leaves, might be mineral def.
Came home and dug up a rhodie that was getting root rot. Replanted it and hope it lives. It has beautiful pink blooms in the spring. Planted the raspberry bush, Autumn Bliss-everbearing kind. Put some stain on the end table. Then realized that it would either be good on the new deck my son had built a few weeks ago or in my house by the sofa with a lamp on it. So the stain might not work inside now. Oh well, it will be protected from water spills, lol.

Picture is my son admiring his work on the deck a few weeks ago. Typical kid!

Well, need to look at the dahila forum now and decide what tubers I want to get.
Later,

And what a great job he did on the deck, I'd stand back and admire it too.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Thanks, mg.
Yes, he is a hunk and unfortunately he knows that too, lol.
Yes, he did a very good job on the deck, tho a few boo-boos like didn't measure correctly in a couple places so I will just put a pot of flowers to cover up the mistakes. He was to do this months ago and school was to start so he asked me if he could take a day off from work to do it and I said sure. So I finally got it stained last weekend before it rained hard the other day.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

DR, you mean I own the DG 2x4. Okay the rent just went up!! LOL. Nice haul on the plants. Still waiting for DH to plow the flower beds for me. I want i t done this fall instead of next spring. I went to a yard sale today and bought an 8 shelf unit that I can put my trays of seedlings on. Only $5.00. I thought a good deal. I saw a piece of stained glass, but didn't buy it as Icouldn't immediately come up with a use for it. Oh well, bargains lost. Went to bed but didn't immediately go to sleep so up for awhile longer. Going to check out some other forums.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Hey ! Where's everyone ('-'?)

For once I'm up late so I figgured I'd catch up with y'all ............... boo-hoo
