meezers, don't you love these daughters? I'm another "Bad mom. ###slap###b " DD lives a 30-40 minute drive away on the other side of town. Close enough that we can and do see grand kids at least once a week, but far enough not to be constantly together. She will still occasionally call and act like we live next door. Her kitchen is reasonably equipped 9she grew up in one that was and got spoiled, I think) but it's usually so messy I wouldn't want to work there.
Count your blessings with no Internet for a morning. I had planned to get in the garden but have spent most of the afternoon on the computer (though not all on Internet). Sometimes I think about what I used to get done and wonder how, and then I remember I was always atached to a computer. lol
I'm convinced that one hand doesn't talk to the other in these utility companies. The food bank I operate is in a city-owned stand-alone building. Water people never installed an exterior water meter reading device and then acted like we'd removed it last summer. They eventually did come by an install one. Last week was time to read it for the first time. Once again, we had a note in the mail box comlaining that they couldn't read the meter. Dummies didn't even look for it.
Ann
Coffee and...Part 31...! :-D
Hi all, just a quick post, it has taken a while to catch up. I seem to be sharing my computer with my son! BTW, who has the 2x4, I need it!!
DH just unloaded the pickup full of sheets of plywood, and sheetrock. Geeze, he just had rotator cuff surgery in Feb. and then before he was off light duty he hurt his back supposedly herniated disks!!!!!!!! Only seem to hurt when he wants it to hurt. Now will probably hear about aches and pains for the next few days. When do they learn that they are not 30 any more!!
Am trying to turn a bed overgrown with poppies and datura into something decent but making a lasagna bed is HARD work! It is only about 5' by 12' but spirit is willing and body is weak. I know my limits!
Darius, hugs and prayers.
There are some Buffalo Chip cookies on the counter for snack this evening. Kind of a glorified oatmeal scotchy with pecans, coconut and rice krispies. Good but not sure if a keeper.
Gotta get supper on the table.
Joy
Sarv,
Let me start off by saying, unless I do faux finis painting, I rarely use tape. But no matter what paint you use, if you must tape, pull the tape off before the paint dries. Just do it carefully and don't let it get away from you. You could end up with red paint on the couch.
If you would like some help picking colors, I would be happy to help. You would just need to email me pictures of the rooms you want painted, with the furniture and accessories in place. Although I am not a decorator, I have a lot of years experience in painting and seen a lot of homes, both middle income and high end. I have also been hired to cover up paint atrocities. LOL
Well, I need to feed the doggies and get out to put some seedlings into bigger pots. The sun has cooled down and I'm a burnig daylight.
Molly
:^)))
Molly- how sweet of you to offer to help me!!! If I could figure out a way to send you a pic =I would - but I am hopelessly computer illerate... Don't even know how to post a pic.
Now on to the tape issue. I had to give it two coats, so it had to dry overnight, then painted another coat. Should I have taken off the tape immediately after the second coat ? I'm going to be painting a cellerway soon and would like to do it right!! LOL My hand is not steady enough to not use tape - unless you have some good suggestions for me to get a straight line!
Who wanted the 2x4???? Mine is sitting in the corner and I think I will need it this week yet. DH just returned from his long walk in the woods and announced 'what's for dinner?' I answered - whatever you fix!! We had spaghetti and garlic toast - I am on the computer - waiting for DH to clean up too. Aren't I bad.....
Hey Joy - I'm looking for double yellow datura seed - you don't happen to have that do you? I have single white and double purple here.
Sheesh - here I've been feeling sorry for myself as I don't have a daughter - just two boys. I long for someone to call and just chat - somehow the boys just don't want to do that with me! And someone to shop with too...boo hooo - pity party coming up I think!
Pasties- man, I'd love to know how to make those. We go up north and get some every year - but it would be wonderful to make my own - second thought, maybe it is easier to just buy them!! Older it get, the less I want to cook.
Well, watching the news on Rita - doesn't sound good.....
Sarv,
You don't really need to wait overnight to put a second coat on with latex. But if time is a problem and you need to rest between coats, how about getting one of those, what I call "breakaway" blades. You could cut the paint at the tape edge after it's dry. Then remove the tape. Those blades are really sharp and give a nice clean cut.
What's this all about? You haven't got a digital camera yet? Get out that 2X4 and ask your DH very sweetly to get you one. A very simple one on an older computer, you just put the plug in the camera and into the back of the computer and watch the screen and do what is tells you. With a newer computer, you just pull the card out of the camera and put it into the slot of the computer.
I picked up a CanonA20 (used) from EBay for my DB's birthday this spring. Less than $50 and it's a very nice model for begginers.
Molly
:^)))
Uh oh Sarv, sorry, am I nagging you again. Me bad.
Sarv, I NEED the 2 x 4!! Sorry but my datura are the run of the mill white ones and way too many of them. My reason for keeping them is just that they grow and grow for me!! Would you have extra purple datura seeds, if so I could send you an envelope. Do you need any regular hollyhocks? My brother just gave me a bag of seeds and seed heads.
Son's aren't too bad for talking but it is usually when you want/need to be doing something else. I have learned to stop and listen I know he won't be here forever. Last night I had to rub his back for almost and hour but, his mouth ran the whole time. You can get all kinda things out of them when you mellow them out, and Jon is almost 19 but still my baby!! lol and lovin it!
Joy
GIMME THAT TWO BY FOUR!!! DH just came home. I'm standing over a boiling pot and an oven that's on. I turned the AC on just before I started. He heads out the front door and hollers over his shoulder "I'm turning the air off" I said "Why?" He sez, "It's nice out" I holler back, "It's not nice in here and I'm standing over a hot stove cooking!!" Geeeeeeeeeez!
Only one of my hollyhocks came back this year....I could use a few if someone would take pity on me..........whine......
Sarv, Xmas before last DH got me a digital camera. I read the instructions. Duh. Managed to put the batteries in and that was it. Did an internet search and found the Kodak Easyshare which comes with a disc to load their software into your computer. So I swapped it at the store. Even I, the technologically challenged, manage to use it. It will store about 18 pictures, and doesn't need an internal disc. Even taking pics is so easy. Look it up. I'm really happy with mine.
And pasties. Soooo simple. Pie crust for the outside. You could even cheat and use those frozen ones (yuck). Dice beef, top round works well, dice potatoes, and onion. Season with salt and pepper to your taste, pile some on half a circle of pie crust, fold the other half over, seal the edges by folding and pressing or use a fork, bake 45 minutes at 400* Veee-olah! Pasties. Upper Michiganders sometime use rutabaga too but I don't. Now you know how. Filling quantities are pretty flexible.
Gotta go finish the hot stove slavery.
Edited to add I never had a store bought pasty that was worth putting a fork to.

Meezers, I can send you some hollyhock seeds are you in the address thingy?
I haven't got the 2 x 4 yet.....so you can't have it till I'm done!!!
Joy
Evening all,
I over did the yard work on Sunday and I spent today in bed just getting up long enough to send kids to school and do breathing treatments every few hours.
But we did get alot done on Sunday. Dh even got most of the garage cleaned out. We may actually be able to get the car in there once the white stuff starts flying.
There is a little town in Southeast WI called Mineral Point, and in it is Pendarvis, a Cornish Mining Museum. There is a small diner that serves authenic pasties. And if you didn't know, pasty rhymes with nasty. The gardens are really nice, they have been restored to be true to the era.
Here is a link: http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/pendarvis/
'nuff for now,
mg
sheesh, have done a lot of cooking but never heard of 'pasties' ?
Maria
"authentic Cornish pasty, consisting of a homemade crust encasing a sizeable, but simple, mixture of beef, potatoes, onions, and salt."
They were developed for the miners to take to work for lunch, and since they are encased in a crust, the filling wouldn't get dirty in the mine. The filling is tasty, but the crust is pretty dry IMHO.
mg
http://www.hu.mtu.edu/vup/pasty/recipes.htm here ya go folks, bake away!
If yours had a dry crust, it wasn't made right. It should be made from pastry dough, and be flakey and tender. Many restaurants and vendors to supermarkets use a kind of thick biscuit dough. Regular pie dough is somewhat fragile, but the miners carried them to work in their outer coat pocket, and the coat was hung on a hook while they were working so they didn't get crushed.
Upper Michigan has many Cornish descendants, their grandfathers and fathers worked the iron ore mines there. There is a bakery in Wakefield MI and one in Bessemer that make a decent pasty, and I've brought home some from there. Almost all of them now use ground beef rather than diced, as that allows them to use cheaper beef.
When we were kids we used to laugh at the tourists up there who would ask "What are pay-stees?"
thank you for the information, never had one of those pies, socould not say whether I 'd like it or not.
Maria
sounds like pot roast dinner in a carry around crust. I'll have one if you're offerring. Knew that would be delicious.
My dad's family was Welsh and they ate a lot of pastys. My GGF worked in the steel mills in Pittsburg and they had the same habit for lunches on the job.
Hven't had one in many years but they were tasty!
My first pasty was served in the UP of Michigan. And to think I was born and raised in Michigan. Southerner though, Battle Creek
LOL
:^)))
Ok, Ok, I do have the official "davesgarden 2x4 It was designated that several days ago by sarv, I think. Since it is the official one, you must use care. So who wants it first? What phase is the moon in?, evidently one not friendly to husbands!! LOL
Well I did get this butt in gear today. Not in the garden, but in the house. I shampooed all of the carpeted areas, 3 bedrooms, 1 hallway and the family room. It was one of those things I had been threatening to do all summer. BTW my back is killing me!! No sense in making 2 days of it I thought, so did it all. If I am able to get out of bed in the morning, I am starting working on cleaning up the planters and pots
Bad moms, I only have the one son and he wants to tell me everything!! Sometimes I just tell him that is way too much information. Don't need to know everything, and don't want to know everything.
Interesting discussion of pasties. I have read about them, but have never had one. Someone's oberservation of a pot roast dinner is just exactly what I envisioned. Sounds good though.
Well received Meezers Home & Garden magazine today. Good article on DG. So now who wants it next? LMK and I will put it in the mail. (Thanks Meezer.)
Darius, that really sucks about not being able to get in touch with Dr. office about test results. Hope sis gets to come so that you will have the final closure of scattering her ashes. I used to wonder about people who used the term closure, but in recent years has begun to have new meaning to me.
Joyous those cookies sound really good. Name is not too appetizing though!! Aren't men so stubborn? Know they shouldn't do some things and do it anyway, then complain of the pain.
Mary, sounds like you had a good weekend for the ride. Brrrrr, don't like the sounds of those temps though. Glad you had a good day for the ride. You just amaze me, they way you do these rides, is the endurance part for the horses or the riders? LOL
Well, since my back is aching, going to bed with the heating pad, so maybe I will be able to tumble out in the morning. Sorry folks, haven't had the energy to set any goodies on the counter for several days.
Good night everyone, rest well.
Got up at 3:30AM - just couldn't take the rolling around in bed any longer!! Anybody ever tried those over the counter sleeping pills? I saw one called Lunesta on tv last night- says you have to be able to be in bed for 8 hrs. Sheesh - I am never in bed that long!!
Molly - I do have a digital camera - cannon A60 and love it. I take tons of pics outside of my flowers - just can't firgure out how to send them on the computer. I have an old crapple (imac) and nothing works the same on these machines. I used to print my own pics at home, but I prefer the quality of the pics at Sam's Club - plus they are just as cheap.
Molly, if I use the sharp knifey thing, do I need to used a straight edge when cutting? (I know I ask too many questions...) IF you were closer, I'd just have you paint!! Hey - I don't mind nagging....I the queen nagger in the family.
M5- give DH cooking time - his tune will change.
Defoe - WHAT cleaned three rooms - what's happening!! No wonder your back hurts. Don't you have Stanely Steemers in your area??? And a son that tells you something. Man, that is amazing. I never hear a thing - found out info by going thru their pockets before I did their laundry. IE - bench warrant out for their arrest for not paying multiple tickets....unopened little foil packets (nuff said about that!!) LOL
Joy as soon as the seed pods are ready, I'll send ya some of the purple ones. Stems are purple too - very pretty. No hollyhocks needed- I have some already. Mine get rust - not pretty. My youngests name is Jon too - he is my sweetheart (most of the time) As long as I can remember he has made me cards- handmade when younger and now on the computer. They are often silly, but he has such a goofy sense of humor - in fact I never know when he is telling the truth or being funny.
Dry pasties (or is it pastys?) - I've always had them served with gravy!! We've had chicken, beef, and veggie - I like the veggie best - the older I get, the more I dislike meat. I should give them a try - DH would think he died and went to heaven.
MG_ what you doing breathing treatments for? I had to use one of those machines with the little ball in it = you suck in until the ball gets a certain height. I get pneumonia real easy - I think the machine is in the toy chest now!! LOL DGS thought it was fun to play with.
I'll pass on the 2x4 - things are running pretty smoothly for a change. BUT I have to take MIL for blood work today - maybe I'll need it for her !!
Tummy is rolly poly - too many pieces of garlic toast dripping with butter....gotta get me some tums..
Somebody needs to whip up a bunch of pasties and leave them on the counter....
Sarv, you are a riot, that''s me every time I read your post :-)))))
Maria
Maria -they say everyone has a twin in the world - maybe you are mine!!!!
Have to admit I never ate a pasty with gravy!! We always used catsup or chili sauce, either way I'm sure they are good. I was surprised at the variety on the link, turnips? carrots? Guess all our neighbors and family went the simple route.
Sarv, none of those OTC sleep remedies work very well for me, except I used the Walgreen's PM and got about 6 hours straight. It was the cheapest too. I have to watch out for caffiene in the afternoon or evening, even in soda.
Purple Heart is coming for donations today, so I filled a big bag with shoes I can no longer wear, and things from the linen closet that I haven't used since we moved in here. Might as well put them to some use. Hated to part with the shoes, but when you can't wear them, what good are they?
Foggy or hazy this morning but it looks like a nice day coming up. If I can get my parts operating I'll get out do a little garden clean up. It's looking pretty shabby, as you can see from the picture I posted yesterday. Still have four pots to dig in-no make that six if I include the jap. maples. Better get out there before the bees wake up. See you all later.
Morning all, haven't gotten started doing anything yet. Been up since 4am, everything I have is hurting from the strenous workout yesterday.
Sarv, not 3 rooms, cleaned 4 rooms and a hallway.
So okay, I am going to the post office this morning, tell me who wants the Home & Garden magazine. It's already to mail, just needs a name on the address label.
Off to do some straightening of the house before I go outside. Had a little rain last night, so will wait until it dries some.
GOOD morning peoples! :-)
I've just finished reading everyone's posts and thoroughly enjoyed watching that 2 X 4 switch hands. LOL And all this talk of Pasties! I guess, getting old up here in Wisconsin, I'd forgotten the time when I didn't know what they were. I just took it for granted that everyone but me was familiar with them. I *do* believe that you could wrap *almost* anything in pie crust or pierogi dough and I'd eat it! LOL
I received a nice big box of hardy asters from Spring Hill nurseries yesterday and had them in the ground within an hour or so (Ouch! patting myself on the back...twisted my arm. LOL) And my friend with the daylily farm brought me over 4 grocery bags filled with daylilies late last evening. So I know what I'll be doing today. ;-) (I'll be DIGGING up the perennials that I *thought* she and I were going to wait until spring to share! That's what I'll "be" doing. ~julie gets grumpy when plans change so suddenly~)
At any rate...I'm hoping to read GOOD news from Darius *real* soon.
Off to get dressed and go outside. TTYL
~julie~
Good morning. It's just getting light outside as I type this. Gonna be a nice day. Today I have iris to plant, some regular types from my neighbor and a bunch of Siberian Iris I got from a DG member in the mail. I need to get some more of the semi-composted barn cleanings from the neighbor's big pile to add to the upper end of the Lasagna bed where I skimped when building it. The plants in that end didn't do as well this year and that is where the new iris are going because there are some gaps there. Another project is to get some elderberries harvested before the wasps get active, so that needs to be done first. It's about 45 degrees this morning, that really slows them down. Then the flower bed, then make elderberry juice. It's always good to have a plan whether I follow it or not........
Defoecat, endurance is for both rider and horse. Of course it takes a certain level of fitness on the part of both. Horses stay in shape better than humans for some reason. Our rules require that no preformance inhancing substances or pain killers be used for the horse, (and they do get drug tested), but the riders seem to be taking all sorts of pills and we don't get tested. I seldom take anything but often remember to carry some ibuprophen and usually give it to some other rider who is hurting. Some days we endure the weather, or the trail, or the horse, or the company that we ride with, etc. And some days it seems to be all of that.
I've been watching the weather in the hurricane area, oh no, here we go again. I sure hope Rita doesn't run right over the Katrina path. It's looking kinda scarry for those folks down there. Our friends near New Orleans rode out the first one but said they would leave in the future, it was too close for comfort and they were on the good side of the storm that time. No word from them in the past few days, I emagine they are boarding up and preparing to leave.
Speaking of leaving, I need to be getting my starving husband some breakfast before he needs to go to work. See you later.
I am so envious everyone working in their gardens, I simply can not because of my back, have to wear a belt that was prescribed it feels much better but if I move a certain way it still gives me a sharp pain. It suppose to be the piriformis muscle that bother the sciatica.
Now I just walk around looking at all the plants that need transplanting and other that need to be dug up because the drought killed them. I finished cutting back the tomato vines, that took me three dayss with just a bit at a time.
Maria
So sorry aria, buy me a plane ticket and I will come work in your gardens!! LOL
defoe, me too. LOL
you think I am kidding? I will, I would adore company from my GD friends, so be careful what you wish, lol
Maria
Maria, do you hear from G2? miss her on niteowls.
Good Morning! Good News from my doctor, the liver ultrasound was fine!
oh, Darius, HOORAY!! fiinally good news. May the next test be as good. Hugs, ~Blooms
Hot Dang Darius, greatest news I have heard today. Maybe the cloud has lifted. Now for the next test, thinking all positive thoughts.
Blooms, do you need help also? What's your weather like the end of October. Know MA gets colder faster than we do. I just don't do deep snow so well. I could do Aria first, then on to Utah.!! LOL
Just in from weeding 5 big beds. One not much in it, others pretty shabby. Since it rained last night, am a muddy mess. I have an appointment in about 2 hours so into the shower to wash mother earth from the bod.
Was looking at the next "patch" I need to do, my sweet green peppers didn't do anything all summer, too hot. They are now blooming and setting fruit. So I will get to make stuffed peppers this summer after all.
Just wonderful, Darius, finally some good health news for you!!!
No I have not heard from G2, though I have written her, I do miss her also.
I guess I did not get any takers LOL
Maria
Hey, Darius, that is great news! Good job!
Carol (DR)
Good morning buddies!
It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day in the neighborhood........lol, you know the rest. I'm finding myself looking forward to this thread more and more. That second cup of coffee is tasting pretty good today.
sarv, I have asthma, and I tend to get bronchitis really easy. This time I skipped the bronchitis and went right to pneumonia. The breathing treatments I do are with a machine called a nebulizer and inhaled Albuterol Sulfate solution. My lungs go into spasms and I can get air in but not out. I just had a bunch of blood work done and I have a really high white count. I had the flu a couple of weeks ago and I just haven't gotten back to 100% since. Well, 100% for me, for you all it would be like 30% ha ha. My list of complaints is long and boring, I applied for disability 2 1/2 years ago, and I think we are on appeal #7. 'nuff about that! About the OTC sleep meds, I used to take Benadryl to help me sleep, but now I take a prescription drug. I take it at 6pm, if I take it later I'm groggy the whole next day.
MaryE, what breed is Breezy? I'm a Saddlebred gal even tho I've not ridden for 15 years. I still have all my tack in the basement waiting.......I'm hoping Jenna gets bit by the horse bug at some point. I didn't do endurance, but I did just about everything else. My guy "Stonewall's General Jasper" was very versatile. I miss him, but he retired to a farm with young children and was spoiled and comfortable for his last years. He earned it many times over.
darius, have you heard form the dr?
defoecat, which airline do you prefer? Can I get you on the way back from Maria's? Want to be the newest Round Robin?
Maria, if we put your back and mine together do you think we could get one good one? We could trade it back and forth.......
I'm done I think. I delivered a carefully worded spanking in the Pets forum and I needed to come to this thread to cool off, lol. I hate to use the word "troll" but......
Smiles all around!
*There is Banana Bread on the counter, no nuts.*
mg
See what happens when I spend so much time writing? I miss the Great News!
Yeah hoo Darius!!! I'm so glad to hear that!
mg
Defoe, nope, was just saying I'd help Maria if I were closer.
Need help here? Always., I've really let the weeds [and alfalfa] get waaay ahead of me this summer. Couldn't seem to focus on them while it was so hot. And now of course they are throwing seed heads. A gauranteed supply for the next few years scattered in the winds. :-(
Get out the champagne - we need to celebrate with Darius!!!! Yipee!!! Great, wonderful news!! You need to do something outrageously fun today!!!
Maria= why don't you get some grow lights. I have a huge rack (called a gorilla rack bacause of it holds so much) DH put lights on them and I am in hog heaven in the winter with them. I bet you would enjoy them too. I have ton of african violets under them. If I wasn't such a wuss I would hop on a plane and come visit too - and tackle your gardens for ya. Plus we could sit out on your beautiful deck.
defoe - 4 rooms - man oh man - you are a wonder woman!!
M5- I am a caffeine addict - Diet coke is my choice. I have my last glass with dinner - I just want a good nights sleep with dreams - I never have them anymore. I actually only have 2 cans a day and my doc said that was ok (as she was sipping on one LOL)
Watched the today program today and they were talking about vitamins - interesting - will continue on Wed. Fish oil is a must (I take it) and a vitamin with minerals (gotta check mine) and women done with the monthlies don't need extra iron (I think I have vitamins for woman -but they may be for old women LOL) My work out gal was just telling me to make sure I take vitamins for the B complex ones. I was telling her that from Nov until Jan, I am always in a sorry state - I just hate the holidays -I feel pulled in a zillion directions, don't really want to have people over for a big booharah because I am tired of doing it, but feel sad if no one does. Plus I never know what to get people and have resorted to the $$ thing. It just is so stressfull for me - am I alone in this??? Some people just love holidays - I feel like a weirdo because I don't. Plus, let me tell ya the 2x4 gets a major workout during that time.....
Gotta go change my clothes to take MIL for her blood work...think of me...(she told me last week that the shop where DH works is outta work(she owns it) and they will be getting rid of him -oh glory...)
DS and DGS are coming for dinner- making chicken casserole (broccoli, then cut up chicken, then stuffing on top) tasty....
Hey morning gayle, that's a novel idea.We could do a spring one to help with planting, and a fall one to help clean up the garden and put it to bed for the winter. Doesn't matter which airline, although I prefer a plane that stays in the air and doesn't do unexpected nose dives!! Had a pilot one time say "folks if you look out the window on the right, you will see another plane. It's okay though, because we have agreed not to play tag"!!
