Male, not retired,
17 when I went to a little music festival on a farm in NY IN 1969.
Explain your user name
Okay, since the subject of age has come up, let's just see who gets the title of "family elder" - you know - the "wise one" of many years. I'm definitely in the running - 74 and 75 coming up in July. Does it bother me to admit my age? Not at all - I've earned every one of these gray hairs! Yuska
Henry: you're the same age as my husband. I wish I could have gone to that "little music festival" but I wasn't born until 4 months after. ; )
I've never been an "age-ist." LOL!
Rhonda
Sheesh, I wouldn't worry about it Yuska! I was just up to see DM who was 73 in Feb. There was only one very steep lot she didn't navigate up in the mountains when rockhounding. I was worried about her and her 2 year old hip. Yeah right! I'd come back down from a site and found she'd already been in the back of the truck shoving and stacking, making room for more. We get finished, dirty and I figure she's tired and sore. Noooo- She suggests we stop at the casino on the way down to play slots, have a few brews and use the facilities.
Hey, the older I get, the more I appreciate the wisdon that (sometimes) comes with age! Yuska, I hope to meet you soon, and I'm thankful you're here "plugging away" with the rest of us. I just turned 51, am not far behind you (but I'm only 4 yrs old as a gardener.)
I turned 60 in Jan but wife says I act like a 16 year old... it works for me.
Paul
I will turn 59 in the middle of September. There is times I feel real old. Especially on days like we have been having this week. The weather has been rainy and we haven't seen the sun for about 6 days. I can't believe about 3 weeks ago the temp. was 85 here and I dug out a pair of shorts. I keep saying come on spring, but I know I am wishing my life away. BUT
come on spring.
YIPEE!! Another one older than me...Yuska, I'm glad to see someone that will admit to being "an elder". I am 70 years young....keeping busy. Another one on here is older than me, but she will have to admit it...I'm a freind and I want to stay that way.....Heck....come to think of it I know 2 more that fits the "elder" designation. Jo
Male, 65 in Sept., retired.
When I went to get a hotmail account the name I wanted was taken. My grandad always called me Flowerpot. So I asked my mom what it should be and she picked Flowerfan.
The 86 is the year I graduated from High School. Which makes me 36.
My real name is Heather.
The name that I love on DG is Bloomswithaview.
43, male and sadly not retired :-)
Well, Daddy called me Sugarfoot, but when I got to DG that was taken.
I was also known for growing like a weed, so I went with sugarweed.
My given name is Sidney Ann. I am "Sidney" to all my friends and Mother was "Ann" to all of hers. I have been called "young man" several times on DG. I'm a month older than 2pugdogs.
I still take note when "Sugarfoot" post here and wonder "When did I write that?"
Sidney
Sidney, thanks for explaining that you are female, that does get confusing sometimes, doesn't it?
names can definitely be misleading. I think it also depends on where you grew up. Over the years I've had several folks decide it was their duty to point out that 'Blaine' is a girl's name or telemarketers call and ask for Mrs. Blaine... I say Yeah, waddya want. "No, I need to speak to the missus, is Blaine there?"
the most recent casualty - my newfound brug-buddie BrugAddict had assumed I was a woman and we've been chatting merrily. After a couple of recent posts I suspected as much and had to mention I was just a hairy legged boy. So don't let the flowers, mumus and crochet activities fool you. Love trucks, fishing, beer and can even appreciate a good loud bout of flatulence once in awhile. ;)
LOL! To funny Blaine!
Pfffft.
Ohh, that was a manly one!!
confessions of an assumer - I had figured 'imway2dumb' to be female. Really bad, I actually envisioned a blonde playing the "I'm so helpless" role but was probably in the mensa society with her own thriving business. Must be that blasted testosterone skewing my vision again.
This is a wonderful thread. I'm Terre, not because it has anything to do with french for earth, or anything else, I'm not that creative. It's just my first name, and since someone else already had Terre, I had to add an _ at the end of it.
I am envious of the people here who have thought up creative names, Blooms, Happenstance and more. I think my all time favorite has to be Imway2dumb, though. You have to be pretty smart, and no spring chicken, to understand just how much you don't know!
This is a great thread!!
Along with looking for some "elder" gardeners, what about some of our younger gardeners? Come on you babes in the woods, come out and play in the garden!
Love all the stories, and I too have been guilty of assuming an alternate gender when trying to decipher a screen name. It's always a great surprise when I'm pretty close to correct, but often a true laugh out loud when I find I've been way off base. :-)
Okay, I already stepped up as being a young'in-- and people always think I look younger than I am. I'm supposed to like this, but I still don't! I feel underestimated by that. It's nice being younger than average here, because since you can't actually see me, people would naturally assume I'm older! That never happens to me in real life. :)
So who is the youngest here then!?!? I'm 24.
J
There are not many 24 year old Stevie Nicks fans. Good for you!
Oh, there's a TON of us! Well, maybe not 24, but 25-35. I think there were more folks my age at their last stop here in Denver, then there were older. But, as far as anyone I know, I'm the only one! LOL! I am actually a much bigger fan of Christine McVie's, but she never puts out any solo material, and , she retired :(
Lol, my daughters are your age. They love Fleetwood Mac. THEY took ME to the Simon and Garfunkel concert here in Denver, and when one of them went to see Charlie Daniels, she sat on the front row. Charlie Daniels looked down at her and said, "This song is older than you are!" She told him her momma had raised her right!
Her momma did!
I agree!
My youngest was blabbering about a cool new song that I probably didn't know about. Crossed her eyes when she tried to sing a few bars and started out with 'Bang Bang, the boogie to the boogie...' I chimed in, got my groove on and finished the entire Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" in style. She wanted to know how I memorized it so fast. Yeah, I've almost got it down pat after twenty years!! Still one of my favs though, with my red neck in my pickup truck!
Oh, Simon and Garfunkel! That brings back great memories from when I was a kid, and recently I had to buy my parents their CD so I could have mine back! Soon we're going to see Arlo Guthrie. I certainly think older music is becoming popular with the younger generations.
No littering from your motorcycle as you leave Alice's Restaurant!
You can get anything you want at Alice's restaurant....................... :-)
Great guitar licks, too.
Happenstance, it's always a great surprise, "when I'm pretty close to correct"? Isn't that a little like being a "little" pregnant? : - )
I think there are a couple of members under 20 yrs of age. (One from Finland, Evert, his member page says he's 17, but I don't know when he wrote that.)
Danak,
My DH and I grew up with Arlo Guthrie, gospel truth. We lived in MA and rode around in his yellow checker cab. He still lives there between my hometown and my DH's hometown. :) Also, my Sister-IL's brother was in his backup band for years , many moons ago (Shenandoah, not the country one). Her brother has since passed away and I think, if I remember right, Arlo was at his memorial.
Oh and Alice's Restaurant is about a real place in our county back home and it's funny to listen to the song and know who Arlo is talking about, ha, ha..
Kathy :)
I think BaldEagle (or something like that) is one of the oldest Dgers. There was a thread on exactly who was the oldest a few months back. Aria (actually named Maria) is past 70, but I'm not certain exactly how old. Anyone want to invite them in for a post? :)
Wow, Kathy, that's pretty cool. I've been to one of his concerts before and really enjoyed myself. I'm excited to be going again. Not only for the music, but he's a great storyteller, too, and quite funny.
I don't want a pickle. Just wanna ride my motorcicle.
His daddy was from Oklahoma and an even better musician!
Woody Guthrie was an awesome songwriter. There was a show on the other night about Woody and his travels. He was quite a man. They used to live in CA and moved to Oregon, actually lived all over the place. Arlo never really talked about his father though. He and his wife Jackie are a bit eccentric, but nice people. I used to live next door to his sister-in-law Juanita. When I saw him on this show, I couldn't believe how grey/white his hair had gotten. Of course, it happens to the best of us........but somehow i thought Arlo would never grow old. We haven't seen him in many years. And we all used to hang out at Woody's Roadhouse in Washington, MA. Wow, that was so long ago.
So anyhow my name here is MistyMeadows, but if it keeps raining i'm changing my name to MuddyMeadows or MurkyMeadows. BTW, Shoe gave me my DG name :) Thanks Shoe.
I'm male, I'm 33 years old, and i picked my name because I have a green thumb, which my dictionary defines as "an apparent talent in growing plants easily" , but i'm also new and inexperienced (green) at gardening. I guess i've just been lucky that my plants do good, at least IMHO. By other gardener's standards, my plants are probably terrible looking, which makes my name sort of a contradiction to itself. Heck, i was thrilled to get 6 tomatoes from one plant last summer, which someone else may think is not very many.
I read on another thread somewhere about what a hassle it is for Admin to change someones name, and if i had known that ahead of time, i probably would have thought of a better name, since i won't be green (inexperienced) forever.
David
OK, Mine is basically my nickname. Real, birthday certificate name is Kip but thru the years friends started calling me Kipper soooo I figure that I'm one of those wierd people with a nickname longer than their real name. OH the "2" comes from someone on ev1.net already having my name.
I'll try to explain mine and hope it makes sense. While reading a book called "How Your Child Learns and Succeeds", I learned about myself! I found that my learning style is "concrete-sequential". The concrete part means I take things at face value, "it is what it is". Just tell me what you want. I'm a little slow at things with hidden meanings. My last name starts with a K, and I'm a blonde. (but had to drop the e, too many letters) And I just turned 41. (and I didn't even cry!)
Gotta say - 3 more great names in a row. David - you are a succcess and it only gets better and worse and better.. :) Kip - I thought we had a Victory Garden host! I've seen konkrete around and thought it was like 'hard core blonde' or a sneaky way of describing gray hair color.
Great stories
