Yet More Seed Snatching

Palmyra, IL(Zone 5b)

Looks like I'll have to head into town and do some seed snatching myself. What a great idea.LOL. Jody

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Yes, Magpye, got the bubbles! My ol' brain is a congerin'.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

JodyC .. jes hang on 'nar a bit .. and we mite can all go t'gether soon !!! ... LOL ..

Glad you've joined in .. !! Bet Weez nor any of 'em will mind some fresh idees here. Welcome !

Well, all you wonderfully nutty folks .. I'm off to start my supper. Or, is it the noon dinner that I was sposed to
have done .... way looooooong time ago. ... Oh dear gussy ... (Move over P'nut, momma mite be movin' to'
ya doghouse witja!!)

LOL

- Magpye

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Hey, Magpye... weiners thaw fast! Jodi, let us know if you find any good seeds!

Lauren takes a bow and then pats herself on the shoulder for allowing herself to be corrupted... Yesterday, I took seed from the most gorgeous hostas you have ever seen. Some were a gorgeous blue while others were a luxurious green. It was my very first ever snatch! I have never snatched seeds before in my life!

Anyone going to ask where I took them from?

The Church! Since I garden, they had asked me to cut back what ever needed to be cut back in that area where the hostas were the next time I stopped in. Well, I stopped in yesterday and I snatched before cutting back the hostas. I also put the seeds in the mail to a DG member just this afternoon!

Atascadero, CA(Zone 8a)

Is it just me or is somethin up with the time of the posts. . .probably just me, but the posts are say'n 10:00PM . . .it's only 3:00PM here and add 3 and you still don't get 10 in AK or NY????. . .

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Bravo, Equil! You can truly call this a rescue mission. All those little seeds destined for the dumpster, and you liberated them and sent them out to someone else.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

You know .. we all seem to be fergettin one lil aspect .. that we're actually heppin' to prevent also ...

See .. just you, yesterday Equil .. and like the Weez, had done long ago stated ....
If'n them lil seeds was to be left alone to stay and drop to the ground .. they'd prolly all be spreading around and about like wildlife .. and in places where folks really don't want 'em to be growing/goin' in the first place(since 'seeds' truly are the botanical equivalent of our yunkins: they DO need discipline and a mite bit of 'order' established fer 'em!) .. or, they'd be blown to the wind, and wind up just any dang'd ol whar .. or, flushed by any rain to the deepest cracks and crevices of the sewers .. or, just as we've all been talkin' about: nipped, clipped, and trashed .. where they'd serve absolutely no dang'd body any good purpose at all!

Ahh, perish all of those horrid thoughts!! .. I jes as soon 'jip' 'em and be done with it !! ...

Watchdog - problem - co. makeing false positive entries (Grow quest?) - solution - make it so only subcribers can post to the Watchdog. No small company is going to cough up 15 bucks for each false user. If they put up one or two, it will be easy too spot and useless for them. IMHO- Dyson

Golden, CO(Zone 5b)

Ok, I have definitely been missing out the last couple of weeks!

I have a extra large size school bus, painted dark blue (ex airforce vehicle). I think the dark blue would blend into the night well, don't you? It doesn't have any seats in it, cause DH uses it to store car parts, but I could throw out all the junk car parts and bring the bus I can probably hook a converted pickup trailer on the back to hold equipment, and somewhere, I think we even have a camping portapotty.

I know I can provide references that will swear I'm as sane as the rest of you. Which isn't saying much! Can I play too?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/3143/ hope I did the link thingy right Weezingreens.. First timer here!

Terre, please join us!! Ya on the school bus! Great color too!!!! Before you know it we will have everything we need!

Equil - you GO on your first Snatch! You made me spray my coffee laughing though when I read where you got the seeds from! Way to jump on in there!!!!

Magpye - I am hoping to get a 'warning' first before the pink fuzzy slipper arrives at my door!! I've been here 9 years you would think I would have earned at least that!! Besides, I 'talk' to you all way more than my 'in person' friends. Sad but oh so true! ;-)

Go JodyC keep us posted on your findings!- pun intended LOL.

Seriously though - this would be so fun if we could make it happen in real life!! Girls week off or something like that. Maybe if we save our pennies for next Spring or something. Course Weez you will have to save a LOT for a flight - or we could all come to you! I have never in my life seen more flowers than in AK. Anyway, probably just dreaming but it's a good thing for me to daydream about on my commute!!

One MORE thing - Weez - if you designed a packet with say 'blanks' on the back to fill in plant, height, planting depth, etc etc. with a Snatchin' logo on them I would be delighted to purchase some from you! I know we aren't supposed to sell on DG but considering my schedule I will never be getting around to making my own! Right now (I know you know what I am talking about! LOL) I am handwriting on purchased packets. I am serious!!! It would be even cooler for our little group to have our own 'logoed' packets!!!! Just plantin' a seed in yourn' brain there... :-)

Nicole

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Ahh Terre_ .. yes'ms, we're all sure glad you managed to feel your way here!
C'mon, have yaseff a sat-down .... I do bleeve, that Weez, will agree .. the playground's wide-open ! !
(mite jes start a practicin' on lernin' to duck mitey quick .. at any given signal, by Weez!)

And, a hearty seed-snatchin' place mat is now set before ye! Oooooo, and you arrive .. with a nice Big Blue Bus .. and, she beez an xtree large'un to boot!!! .. Ohhhh boysers!! Tell hubby that we'll build 'im a lil shed to put his auto stuff in - jes as soon as we get back, ok? ..

Ah, heck .. who needs seats! Personally, I've been spy-ballin' nem foam rubber foldin' chairs in wallyworld - they duuble as a bed!! Used to have a couple of 'em, way back when we tent-camped. Beat the heck outta tryin' to sleep on nem lil thin 'under the sleeping bag' rubber mats!!

Also .. 'em 'ar references ya say ya got Terre_ .... Ya reckon any of 'em'd be willing to be {our} own personal 'bail bond' folk ? ... (ya know, jes in case)! lol

A lil insanity is one of the major igniters in life, love and laughter!

NC .. you gonna get Weez into the 'merchandizin' aspects already .. 'ey?!! Welllll, I reckon it mite be best to jes go on and dive off into the deep end .. and get it over with .. huh!! ... LOL ...

- Magpye

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

NC, thanks for the link, you did it just in time as they were on my list to order from, being so close to me. What interesting feedback. Dates are super interesting. Janet, have you ever dealt with them? Sounds like the perfect place to go looking for seeds, heh..heh...and I noticed the time thingie too, weird, huh?

Terre, what timing! Please come out and play! The bus sounds perfect! No seats is like a blank canvas, the best to work with. Oh, the creative juices that flow! Does hubby REALLY need the bus back?

Oh Equil, we are sooo proud of thee, your first seed snatch. A humble moment indeed!!This could be the DGCCDDDSSS whatever inititaion. You have to snatch seeds and then come tell when, where, how.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

oohhh - wow - glad I posted it. I read all those comments and just couldn't believe it.

Atascadero, CA(Zone 8a)

When I looked at that yesterday. . .I was astounded. . .couldn't help but think what a black-eye that put on us Golden Staters. . .shame on them!!! They aren't too far from here. . .would be interested in just drop'n by their grounds to see what their 'operation' (and I use that word lightly) looks like next time I'm down at my DD's in Kingsburg. . .sounded to me like they got in way over their head and I mean 'way' over their head. . .incompetent help. . .oh well, the list goes on and on. . .had my own bad mail-order experience that just concluded and so I can understand the frustration of those buyers. . .think I'll just stick with SS opportunities for awhile. . .he he

And Terre. .great sounding set of wheels. . never ridden in a big blue bus. . .welcome aboard for the ride of your life. . .

I'm off to some 'major' seed snatch'n today. . .hope it dries out enough to assist in my efforts. . .gotta a whole experimental garden full of seeds just wait'n. . .kinda been workn on it little by little. . .but the foggy weather is gettn too close fer comfort and then the mold sets in. . .not good. . .think I need to get one of those dehydrator doo-hickies to dry em up in. . .you guys don't leave w/o me. . .LOL

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Not a chance Jcangemi! You were my first trade ever! Wouldn't leave without you! Go get those seeds!!

This message was edited Nov 12, 2004 12:02 PM

Well ladyannne, I was actually quite proud of myself too. I now am starting to think back to what was flowering where last spring and summer so that I can get back to those areas next year. I went so far as to ask my neighbor if he could remember the general area where the smooth penstemon was growing on his property in hopes that there might be some seed left on his plants. He took me over to where they were but they were dispersed- rats! A day late and a dollar short!

Well, I've decided I'm going to do a reverse seed snatch. I have had my eye on some purple loosestrife. They have been mocking me for months. There are some nice tall plants standing there just waiting to spew forth their seed from hell onto the land. I have hefty garbage bags that I am going to toss over the tops of them to contain the seed and then snip snip! Off into a dumpster those tops will go. I have been looking at those plants and swearing about them for months and figured if you all can snatch and grab... I can santch and trash. They are located at the entrance to a new subdivision where they will be building some homes. The area is all grown over and loaded with nasties like chicory and Queen Anne's Lace and I am sure they would have cut it all down next spring but by then these monsters would have broadcast thousands more purple lossestrife seeds. My only regrets are that I didn't have enough guts to go after them a while ago when I first started reading this thread. The plants are on an easement. A friend of mine has been removing buckthorn seedlings from an easement by her for a while now. I should have broken down and done this a while ago. My husband now thinks I am certifiable.

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Weez, love the packets!!!!! GardenAddict s'got the gloves, cool!!! Terre, oh mother's green Earth, A blue school bus, how perfect is that!!!!!! glad you folks joined us We love company!!!! Now We have the 60's Hippie bus from LadyAnne, all perdied up with flowers, followed by the Blue one, standing proud,
Magpie, foam rubber seats from Wally's, ain't that grand!!!!! This will be good support for my achy breaky back.
Roadtrip, Colorado sounds Mavelour darling, and yes would love Yosemity, ya right, so crowded most of the time! Like I said, if some can't afford$$$$ to fly, take the bus, the train, C'mon Y'all, this city slicker s'trying real hard to pull this off, humm..... and talk yr lingo, jus trying to make ya all comfy, geez, and this not be my native tongue, lol,
I just splurged and bought myself a new pair of Fiskars, floral snip, says on there: For grooming plants and flowers, teeh hee....... s'got a rubber cap, so I don't stab myself after I put it in my back pocket, like I've done before, lol..... this Seed Snatching diva s'good to go!!!,

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

You go woman!!!! That's throw's a whole new dimension to seed Snatchin'! We can add - land savin'- to the gambit.

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

I pulled all the germander seeds the other day, it's getting just a tad out of hand, and when I bent over to get the penstemon clipped, several feet over, I spilled the ENTIRE germander seed pot. OMG.

If you miss a seed, oh, do I know that one. I do weekly weed walks and weekly seed walks now, armed with appropriate equipment for each activity. It's like dressing for war. And remember, if you miss a seed, there is ALWAYS next year.

David thought we were all certifiable by the end of the first thread!! LOL!!!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Well ya see now? We are doin' our part as well! I will start keeping my eyes peeled for offenders here in my neck and dispose of their evil little seeds!!

I tell you I have been typing so much today I am getting sloppy sloppy sloppy! In between here I am typing info on a spreadsheet! More fun here though!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Yoiks, I can sympathize with the spread sheet work. I'm pretty stupid when it comes to Exel, and while adding data to my trade list, I inadvertently re-listed the data alphabetically, but only for the last name column. Now everything seems to be out of alignment. My mother used to say, "If your brain doesn't work, your feet have to." In this case, it is my fingers.

Around here, the oxe-eye daisies get out of hand. When the heads dry, there are hundreds of seed in each one. I'm constantly pulling them up out of my gardens. I've got a sandwich bag full of those... anyone want to sabotage a nasty neighbor! LOL!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Sabbatoge me, I love em and have some secret dirt to plant them in. Just let me know. I want to be the Lady Bird of Florida.

Edited to say Bird not Gird.lol

This message was edited Nov 12, 2004 3:14 PM

Sabotage a neighbor by broadcasting evil seed...

weeze, you're slipping woman!

Neighbor... get it...

That Oxe eye is like herpes... the gift that goes on giving. That garbage would come right back to haunt you ten fold! Silly you.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Weezingreens, I know what you mean about the sorting of the spreadsheet thing. I have done that myself. My manager does that sort of thing and he's always calling me to go to his office to fix it!

Read up a bit too - I am quite serious about the seed packets creating thing....

Tell you a story about Oxe eyes - I ordered a pack of seeds from (unnamed supplier) grew my seedling in the house, set it out, etc. When it started blooming it looked nothing like what it was supposed to. Course by that time I had forgotten what I was trying to plant there in the first place - lol. Anyway, I didn't know what the plant was but when I came onto DG I posted for an ident. You guess it! Oxe Eye Daisy! Now it's popping up on the other side of my house as well. It does have a pretty flower though - but I keep my eyes out for it/and on it.

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

Back to the "snatchin seed" part of this thread, I have a confession to make...

I dead headed some of Lowe's Black Eyed Susans for them. :) Well, they were DEAD! ha

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

Love the Ox-Eye story! I can't count the wonderous things that have been a result of "Oh-oh" events, from seeds to cooking and crafts!

I would die without Excel. I do my seed packets on it and everything else in my life, lol!! I just have to figure out how to take my plant data base that's in html and move it over to Excel without retyping the entire thing! I think it's not possible, sigh.

Hanna, I love my Fiskars, but they get dull so fast, what am I doing wrong????

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Well, although I have been tempted to drop some seeds here and there to cause havoc, I've never done it. Of course, it isn't necessary to sabotage with oxe-eyes here, since they do that themselves! NC, they are pretty, they are hardy, but they will be coming up all over your beds.. not only by seed, but by underground runners... double whammy!

Sugarweed, maybe they won't do so 'well' in Florida. Check to see if they are on your noxious weed list! Hey, if you'd like seed, I'll send you all you want!

NC, email me with an idea of what you want on the packets & I'll make you a pattern, jpg it, and mail it back to you for production.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

You are awesome! Will be later on this weekend... Got to work a bit before I leave ;-(

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Weez, have you any pictures of your weeds?, Pardon me, I mean Oxeye daisy? There are 3 in the PDB, that I saw. None of them were white. Are yours white?.
The oxeye I identified years ago had white petals and dark brown centers. They were native to over half the continent. Centers may have been yellow, but recall brown. Is this the oxeye you speak of? I was a certified Flower child and many summers identified over 150 wildflowers a season in the 70s and 80s.

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

EQUI, You keep this up Gal, I'm gonna need a diaper!!!!
Kathy, way to go girl!!!! Someone s'got to keep those flowers looking good, those silly vendors, ya.
LadyAnne, I know, that's why I bought a new pair, guess we should treat them with a little olive oil on the knife sharpener! I left my last pair outside, tsk tsk, senior moment, but this one is special, it's staying in my pockets wherever I shall roam.
Went to Bezerkeley today, they do have such nice overgrown gardens there, such a lovely way to spend an afternoon, the weather was great, my fall hippie hat matched my 60's thrift store sweater, I get more compliments, lol
Ok, Sugar, you're our flowerchild Diva, you lead us into temptation, you can ride shotgun on the bus!!!!!!!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Sugarweed, oxe-eyes have yellow centers. Here they are quite quite and the blooms are large. They are quite hardy and bloom the whole summer long. They have a tendancy to sprawl, since the stems are so long. They get 2-4' tall here with the blooms on them. Actually, they are a wonderful plant for the meadow or the edges of your yard. You just don't want to plant them in your flower beds.

One year the oxe-eye daisies were so thick along the roadsides from our place to town that I swore someone seeded it there. Ceeades lives just down the road from us and she's the one that gave me a sandwich bag full of seeds, so I've accused her of opening a bag of them and letting them blow out the riders side window of her car that spring! Of course, she denies it! They were sure pretty all summer.

Maybe we should consider hanging a hand or two out the bus in areas where we aren't hurting mother nature. I've got tons of Iris setosa seeds, and chocolate lily seeds I could offer.

Thumbnail by Weezingreens

Ummm oh oh oh, Lauren is raising her hand and waving it in the air again.... writhing and wiggling in her chair like she waited too long to go pee volunteering to select the seed to get tossed out the bus window!

Go native!

Wauconda, IL

If you want to get rid of ox-eye daisies..burn 'em! They don't much like the fire! April

Hmmm.... I got a chainsaw for Mother's Day this year and I got an acetylene torch just for yucks to be able to go after some garlic mustard. I say that as long as we are all a snatchin and a grabbin... we might as well arm ourselves with acetylene torches and give old Ma Nature a hand with a few prescribed burns here and there along the way. Get the visual on this... women with blow torches hanging out of the bus windows- scary, very scary!

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

.. LOL .. and waving our 'diteys', to boot !! (diapers!) .. LOL ..

Certainly conjures up a mitey frightin' image, I tell ya !! ..

Won't anybody know whether to try to capture us quickly for the welfare concern .. or run for the their bloody lives!! .. LOL

Reckon, it'll all depend up which bus we're in too! ... hee hee

- Magpye

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Now, now an oxygen acetylene rig would come in handy for making a door in the side of really packed dumpsters. The w/m I visited tonight is about ready to dump, large clearance racks, lots of pots on the dieing rack. . Picked up 4 clemantis at 1/2 price. Takes 3 years for them to flush. first they creep, then they leap, third year they go crazy. AAhhh tomorrow.

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Equi, you're my kind of lady!!!! A chainsaw and a torch for Mother's day, I'm dying over here, We really really need you on the bus trip, don't think anyone will mess with us for sure!!!! And, so handy besides!
Down south I was singing away trimming, buzzing the overgrowth with what I tought was prunner, all look the same to me, WEEELLLL, guess what it was a chainsaw, always use that thing, like that time I cut up the Freon line for the Air-conditioning, it was hiding under the "red apple" succulent, I never ran so fast the other way, as that's quite dangerous to inhale, that was a very expensive day, lol lol, everytime my DH see's me with it trimming trees and such, he holds his head with that OH NO kind of look!

Golden, CO(Zone 5b)

Hey! With the torch we could put a sunroof in the bus!! Make it an almost convertible?

Now now now magpye... Depends are the way to go. They're super absorbent and with all that I have read on them... if our fires get out of control they have highly desireable properties. I'm thinking Depends are our friends because they are so... well... versatile.
http://www.sciserv.org/cgi-bin/nec/FlamingDiapers.pdf

Why sugarweed! I do believe you are the first person aside from me to openly admit to dumpster diving! You go girl and be vigilent! Best to find out right away what day is garbage day so you don't miss a golden opprotunity.

No no no hanna, husband bought the chainsaw but said no to the acetylene torch as he felt that was pushing it a wee bit. I had to buy that myself as he felt I'd end up one big ball 'o flames. And hanna, do be careful with freon, nasty nasty nasty stuff! Now tell me... what did you do for an encore?

Funny, I missed the potential of using a torch to provide better access to a dumpster. I can see definite possibilities here! Naaaaa, the gauge of metal is too thick on a dumpster, it'd never work but this would-
http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/ishop/877/shopscr1293.html

I'm thinking we could make a few sunroofs in that bus in no time flat with a few of those! All the better to feel the breeze with my pretties!
