Yet More Seed Snatching

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Come on, Dyson. It will be OK. Remember... we have net hats, gloves.... and steel-toed boots!

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

The mice may come in handy if we run out of steaks ... we can use them for pike bait.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

We may have to come up with some sort of shower facilities if we are going to be smelling of garbage and fish!

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

Dyson, I was really worried there for a second, before I read the last part of your post about pike bait. Whew! Whatsa pike? Fish? Poor Indy. Short for Indiana Jones. We sort of 'played' with his eyes. He really doesn't look like that. His auntie likes coffee, though. He is one of our best mousers and 'the littlest dog' as he follows me, no matter where I go. Where DO these mice come from, anyway? Took one away from him about 3 am again. Shiver.

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

A Northern Pike is sorta like a freshwater version of a Baracudda, Long w/lots of teeth lots of meat per fish as they grow large. At dusk in the right water all you need is a bait that splashes around and .... boom you are hooked up good fight, good fish, Feed a man a fish and he eats, teach a man to fish and he eats a long time of something like that. - Really gotta go for now. bye

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Sounds like a scary fish! You get to be in charge of catchin' them Dyson!

Atascadero, CA(Zone 8a)

OK. . .a coupla items here. . .if you use them helmets like they wear in mines, with the little flash light on top. . .frees up both hands for SS (side benefit of protect'n the bean if the dumpster lid falls on ya.) And we could hang a few of them solar showers on the bus to heat up durin the day and voila! . . .hot showers whereever you roost for the night. . . .jess a coupla ideers. . .

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Might as well put a bathroom in the bus as well! That way we won't have to beg local merchants!

Pocola, OK(Zone 7a)

Hey, I know! Throw the kitten in first (which, by the way, is ADORABLE) and if anybody wants to know what we're doing........... we're rescuing a poor kitten, what else?

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

Indy is gonna love this. Golly, we have just about eveything set in our minds, what's next? Gotta make the tees, finish writing the book of destructions, tune up the bus......

Oh cherishlife! Great thinking! Throw the kitten in! I like it. Extremely plausible!

One thing...
How do you explain the bus and what piled out of it? Moral support for the people rescuing the poor lost and forlorn kitten?

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

Making a new sign for the bus....."DG Animal Rescue Mission".....GOOD disguise, dontcha think?

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Cherish ... ref: 'Throw the kitten in first ... ... we're rescuing a poor kitten, what else?'
.. LOL ..

Man, what a lite bulb flash there cherish!! .. Excellent ideer thar fer shore !!
And another grand opertunity, for the Dumpster Divin' Diva 'Kritter Kommittee' to display its full force and come to the aid of our very own .. I mean, some bodys lost meow kitty !!! (more t-shirts, I know .. but we jes gotta have d'cent back up plans!)

Geez .. now, yall jes thank about'is here fer a few. .... I'mma thankin', that if'n we play our cards jes rite .. dang gum, do yall maybe reelize that we jes mite can even arrange to have ire own gub'mint to give us the grants to fund all of these multi-taskin' dutiful obligatory wild excursions of 'orn?!? ...

Hmmm, jes gotta wonder what kind of duct tape (xcuse me, red tape) mite be involved in all'at stuff ?!! Mite can even mooooove on up from the VW bus and any ol yeller school bus .. to some big time fancy RV rigger!! With all o'them 'minities on board!

But .. mite be a bit of some gosh awful splainin' tho' .. as to why one big ol purtee RV bus is a settin' right near by to some ol trash dumpsters tho' ... Reckon, we can always claim we broke down tho'. But, it would be a more bleevible tale with an ol ratltrap'd VW tho' ...

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Ya, but too hard to handle, don't ya think???

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

OK, the shower thing sounds good, Animal Patrol, Kitty rescue, Ya got the pooper scooper then? You'll need a catbox, don't ya think????
We can put in a portaPotty for those Senior Ladies that can't hold it long enough, case We run out of diapers, hey? Steel toed shoes, nah, my Berkies will do, bsides, don't want to look like Ya got monies do Ya? Don't forget to get plenty of Ziplock bags at the Big Store, Ya know for them seeds, and bring out the yogurt cups to keep clippings in, right? Hey, you all taken naps, or what???

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Cherish that's just BRILLANT!!!! Magpye, if we get cornered you can just go to workin' on 'em with yourn lingo there and get the powers that be all confused like! They won't know WHAT we're doin'!!!

Naps are a MUST Hanna - hmmm, pillowcases stuffed with Rose Petals maybe? Or Lavender? Or both? I know my son's used a pile of clean diapers as a pillow a time or two when we're out and in a pinch! They can be right comfy if you're tired enough! They also double as drool catchers!

Pocola, OK(Zone 7a)

I'm glad everbody likes this kitten idear. I got one or two I could contribute to the cause, one kitten is bound to get tired sooner or later.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

My dad has a few (10 or so) to contribute too! That way if we get busted they won't notice that we are using the same cat!

LOL - Well, I would love to be in to chat but my 'puter - 'this old thing' just won't allow it! Maybe one of these days I will step into the present day! Heck, I might even get off dial up!

Pocola, OK(Zone 7a)

I understand. I can't get into the chats from my mom's computer. I just came from there and was really getting frustrated because it just wouldn't come up.

Hanna Hanna Hanna! Thank you so much for thinking of me, "We can put in a portaPotty for those Senior Ladies that can't hold it long enough, case We run out of diapers, hey?"

Oh my gosh, a moment of brilliance has hit me. We can form a 501 (c) (3) and then we can go out and ask for donations of Depends for our missions.

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

We are back to some serious pain from laughing here....think I'll set back and just watch for a bit, your ideas are all brilliant! What's a scary thought is that if we lived closer, we would probably be DOING it. Indy says he would love some help. He's tired from chasing me all day.

Wauconda, IL

I'm an inveterate, un-reformable seed snatcher. While I love all sorts of plants...my thing is native plants.

I am surrounded by state parks. I call them "the Seed Store" And, since I volunteer at a couple of them, and I know the rangers...If I need to go to the Seed Store...even if I'm seen "making a purchase" no one says anything. I don't take the rare stuff though. And since they're getting ready to burn everything anyway....I was amazed that most of the Compass plants and Prairie Dock plants had already been harvested...and not by critters..especially the ones close to the road. EVERY Single Seed-head gone. Which is NOT cool, especially with native plants. I never take the last of anything. These are plants that take 7 years to reach blooming size, and can live for decades, if not 10's of decades.

Next saturday I'm going to go to the Chicago Botanic Garden...and we'll just see what turns up! Equil...you busy next Saturday Morning? Got my baggies and marker! I get in free!

When I was living in the city, not far from me was a produce stand called Stanley's. At the corner of North and Elston. They have been in business for decades, and still have the best, cheapest produce in Chicago. Basil for $2.99 a lb! I used to dumpster dive there for produce, cheese, bread, herbs, spices.....That place fed me so many times I can't count. I could make a huge pot o' veggie soup for nothing, and live on it for days. Have grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch, on really good bread. then they installed a compactor on their dumpsters. An unconscionable waste of good food, IMO! April

Wauconda, IL

Ladyanne,

You can leave that little baby right out of the dumpster! What a cutie!

Hello fellow dumpster diving divas- meet my buddy dodecatheon. You'll really like her. She's my better half in the gardening world. Anything I could even think of doing, she has already done.

April dahlink... you found me. Husband is camping that weekend with the boys. I'm freeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I'll bring enough Depends for both of us and I am sure between the two of us with your 10 cats and my current 7 (Bless newly departed Joel who choked on a mouse of all things and died with it stuck in his throat on the front hall carpet) that we might be able to find one cute and little enough to use as a dumpster decoy. I'll bring the step stool. Since I drive like , you drive.

And April, don't look twice at that Indy when I've got a nice stray (#8) hidden in an upstairs bathroom from the spoil sport.

Who lives in the Chicago land or Milwaukee area who would like to accompany us? We'll make it a point to take the scenic route to the Chi Bo past all the good dumpster haunts.

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Safety equipment : I would laugh hard .... then I remember I have to wear this 5 to 6 days a week!

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

dyson, Ya, but it's perfect!!! can ya get a couple more? dyson, you look terrific in your best suit like that!!! getting me excited, and that takes a lot now days!!!!
and I don't need an extra pocket for my Boob, I'm missing part of it now as it is, Cut it right out, told them, take hem both, they didn't believe me, left me with 1 & 1/2, lol , plenty of room in that bra, I just won't wear the padding!

Uh oh, there's a man in these threads and I've been letting loose?

Dyson, please tell me you have a wife or a sister or a daughter who is slightly touched like many of the people who have been posting? You do understand our weaknesses, right?

Say you're a fine looking fellow! You could be a Poster Child for OSHA in that outfit!

About face ladies, time to exploit Dyson's good looks and find a way to accentuate the positives here by finding a prominent position for him in the hierarchy of the dumpster diving and seed snatching women.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well, he's definately a kindred spirit. We could use a coach, and armstrong power is always handy to have on hand. With his safety training, he might even have an updated first aid card.
Just read his post, he obviously "gets" us.
I've written 2 other replies to this thread today and lost both of them.
I had to zoom dyson's picture to be sure, cause when I have my bibs, steel toed boots, and hard hat, or welding hood on, its hard to tell I'm a lady. That nice trimed beard was the final clue.
I suggest we all wear bib overalls, they have 9 or more pockets, and some of those are zippered. I can pack for 2 days in mine. Count me in. Sidney

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

In the state of Virginia ... excuse me the Commonweath of Virginia, only the larger cities have "curb-side" pick up. Everyone in the rural areas carry their on refuse to the dumpsters that the county places in strategic locations.

My first wife's father (I'm on wife #3) always refered to the dumpsters as "the green gift shop". In fact long before there way a freecycle program on the internet, many people would leave items that others might find usefull on the outside of the dumpsters. You would not beleive the music systems, tv's, computers etc I have retreived & with a little work had operational.

Yesterday I had to "drop the bags" on the way to work (2nd shift) pulled up and spotted a plastic bag, slightly open w/ferns poking out. Wouldn't you know they were plastic? Better luck next time.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Gosh there are so many things I want to reply to!

First off - YA Dyson! Now that we have some armstrong power we can leave my DH at home! Kidding folks!!!!! Really am! Besides my DH has his Commerical truck license! Between the two of you we don't have to worry about gettin' stuck in those dumpsters if we lose the stool!

Ladyannne - what a precious! Gettin' big too!! My DF has one that color he 'tamed' and brought in the house with his other 2. He is also feeding Greys brothers and sisters who haven't wised up yet and are still feral.

Dodecatheon-gee thats a hard one to spell! :-) Wish I had the time and extra $$$ to fly on up there and go with you and Equil!! Imagine the possibilities!

You know what folks? With all these critters, people, and equipment we may end up takin' 2 vehicles! We could get a box van that could carry strickly tools and such and could stand as the 'lookout!"

You know what I just thought about? We could have "Strickly Snatchin' Tradin'" - that way even though we are none to close to each other we can still share the wealth!! Maybe not the fruit, veggies, and desks though! LOL

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

Turn the computer on. Stagger to the coffee pot. Back to the computer, wait for the two kitties to get up on my shoulders, then to read this thread, gasp and laugh so hard they fell off. OMG!! LOL!!

Hello, Dode! (Will that work?) I wanna go with you two. Bummer. Food waste is horrid, I could feed a whole bunch of critters on one restaurant alley garbage can.

Equil, you are not kidding, Joel choked on a mouse? Almost teared up on that one. Ok, I did. Gawd. Hugs. Can't think on that one any more. I took a teensy mousie away from Indy at 3 am the other day. I keep them in a box until I take Jena to school and let them loose at the abandoned bowling alley. Should I start saving these? Cutting loose, lol!!!

Pastor Dyson, (curtsey) those threads are truly magnificent. Love the beard. First thought was how much do those weigh? I thought my gardening prairie skirts were bad, if they get wet, they are about fifty pounds. Plastic ferns? Ye gods and little fishes! (Holding out crossed forefingers towards the screen)

Overalls sound perfect. Yogurt pots, cream cheese, cottage cheese, blue cheese, margarine, salmon at Costco, I save em all. Ziplocks are a buck at the Dollar Stores, prolly can get diapers there, too?

Let's rethink David driving or use him for backup. He can drive anything (really loves the Big Boy toys) but he thinks we are nuts and it sounds like we have plenty of good drivers. He wouldn't even accompany me and my bestest high school friend when we went TPing with my daughter. Harumph. Hey, she had never been and we were the best!!

Indy has six toes, like his mum and sissy and brother, actually picks up things like a hand. He could come in very handy to obtain things waaay down in the dumpsters! Well, if we got his attention off the mousies.

We do need an old school bus. Always wanted to turn one into a traveling home.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

NC, if you are expecting me to get stuck in a dumpster, don't count on Dyson or anyone else pulling me out... better add a winch to our too list!

Ah, yes, a school bus! When my first husband & I moved to Alaska from Indiana in 1974, we drove up in a converted school bus. My DH (departed husband in this case) called the bus 'Nickel More', because 'it only costs a nickel more to go first class'. When we arrived, we lived in a campground in the bus for the first month or so. August is a rainy month around here, and it was pretty cramped with two adults, two kids, and a bassett hound... talk about cabin fever!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow! That's a neat story! Sounds like a cold one too!
We just had our first hard freeze last night - coats have been out for a coupla' weeks here already though!

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh, the memories.....sixteen foot trailer on twenty acres and nine of us (our r n r band from the 60's) deciding to 'run away' from the world. The shower was a fifty gallon drum with a shower head in a tree, filled with water warmed in the sun in clear plastic water totes, standing on a three foot wide flat piece of slate. Heaven. Still have the trailer, JUST in case I ever need it. Makes the bus shower sound like a better idea for us now.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow! I am loving all these stories!!!! Keep em coming!!

Edited to say,
With Weezingreens permission of course! :-)

I do have another thought. Did I already post this one? Someone opened up a new nursery where my DH's used to be. We went by, gave them mentally six months, tops, but I did manage to pocket some seeds. I thought about going back and offering to "trim up" their stock, which needed to be done, badly. Wonder if HD would accept the same, kind, volunteer offer??? I could even haul off the trimmings (and SEEDS) for them myself.

Ah hah!! First time I ever edited a post. Had to try it.
