brenda's aka langbr needs a best friend

Klamath Falls, OR(Zone 6a)

Oh yes, the bucks can be quite large (and that of course holds true for the wethers). Like julie, I had a herd of dairy goats, only not quite as many as she LOL. When I sold my herd I was milking 8 does twice a day, had 2 herd sire bucks (at least 250 lbs apiece), several wethers and dry yearlings (non-milking does), and 21 babies that season alone. I loved them, and if I were younger, I'd still have them. I think goats are the most underrated farm animals there are. They always seem to get a bad rap, and it's a shame cause they are wonderful animals. After all, they are a good deal smaller than cattle, easier to keep and handle, cheaper to feed, friendly and fun, and they give us milk, meat, and hides, plus you could use them for packing or clearing land or whatever. Not to mention that they are much easier to milk since they only have two teats. People in my goat club always say that if God had intended us to milk cows, he would have given us four hands. LOL. Hope nobody takes offense. It's just a joke.

What more could we ask from them? But with all that, people still think of them as dirty, nasty, and awful. Well, to them I say Bah or should I say Maaaaaaaa! Hey julie and Charlotte, maybe we could start a new posse. We could call it Girls for Goats and travel the country singing their praises...hehehe. Jethro could pull a cart for us to ride in. And since he's Brenda's new best friend and it was through debi z that they met, we could invite them too. Of course we'd take along a big bucket to collect his poop along the way as an incentive to Brenda, and to show folks that goat folks are not litterers!

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Sharvis -- ROFLMBO!!! That was a great post!

Learned something new.....bucks, does, wethers.....I woulda just called them he's and she's. LOL

I guess the pygmy goats are the ones at the petting zoos huh? Those little fellas like to butt people especially my 2-yr old. Though my DH was gonna get in a butting war with one at the zoo this summer as he was charging Leah.

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Well, he is a heavy eater, thats for sure !
Makes a pretty good best friend for a gardener though.
He's a good listener and provides fertilizer too !

Yep, those are usually pygmies, but occasionally you'll see a full size one at a petting zoo. It's my personal opinion that only very gentle animals, well trained should be allowed at those places. All goats can develop bad habits, just like dogs, or even children can. Butting was always a no-no at my place. Although they will sometimes play that way with each other, and the bucks will actually fight if kept together after they are grown, they should never be allowed to butt people, particularly little ones at a petting zoo. Shame on those who let them do it. It causes kids to become afraid of kids, and that's not nice. Actually, that may well contribute to their bad reputation. Tell little Leah that it was a bad goat that did that and it should have been scolded, but all goats aren't like that. And tell DH that if he decides to take one on, he'll be butting heads with it till the 'cows come home' 8=}

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Guess what?? I just scored a bucket of goat poop from the zoo!! I'm just so excited... And I'm so glad you guys are here for me because anyone else would think me really sad and pathetic!! LOL

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Sharvis - Luckily Leah was oblivious to the threat --- she was too busy trying to pet the litttle ones that she never knew it was coming at her. Daddy headed him off and snatched up Leah to get out of the fenced in area where they were....all the while Leah sreaming, "No Daddy! Goat Daddy!"

Moby, yeah we here on DG are ok with goat poop scores, until you start standing in dark alleys and saying, "Psst....Psssstt.....ya gotta any goat poop I can score?"

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Pssst.....hey.......over here....... LOL

Now check this out - http://www.goat-trauma.org/
I'm sure it's very serious for some, but it just cracks me up!! Pass you cursor over the head and see what happens... >;)

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Golly!! Guess Leah's not alone. Thank goodness she's not been goat traumatized!!! ROFL. I can't believe there's a Goat Trauma foundation. Too bad the Goat Gear link didn't work.

Now, Moby I'm really curious. You always come up with these interesting websites. How do you do it? Goat Trauma.....Tapirs that look like Scottish cows.....the list goes on. ROFLMBO.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

pssst moby ,you are sad and pathitic ?? all that work to pick up at zoo ,you shoulda got elephant doo.it goes farther and keeps critters away too. ROFLBO

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Elephant poo?? That might break my back! LOL

Oh Brenda, what can I say? I've been told more than once that I should be a private investigator. Just today even! When I have a question, I just can't stop until I have an answer. Not sure how I happened accross that web site, but it sure stuck in my head.

My self description? "A veritable font of useless information" My mind is a steel trap for it!

Klamath Falls, OR(Zone 6a)

Yeah sure...Goat Trauma Foundation. Hehehehe. When I first went there I was appalled and upset because the site seemed so serious and I just couldn't believe there could be such a thing, but as I read further, I realized that it was all a joke and there isn't such a thing at all. Goats climbing trees! Goats that have been fed a diet of fabric and buttons! Goats roaming the streets in urban areas! Come on. Really. And look closely at the pictures. You'll see that somebody, for some unphathomable reason is pulling our legs, and since we're only two-leggers, we can't afford to let that happen. Huh. So not to worry about little Leah, or little Leon, or little Leroy, if a goat comes at em, just do what Leah's daddy did, scoop em up and hotfoot it outta there. LOLOLOLOL

Charlotte, I love those pics of your goats. Nubians are my very very favorites, though I'm a sucker for a goat of any breed, even the mutts. 8=}
Just look into those warm dark eyes folks and tell me if you really think goats are mean.

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Well, I have seen some mean goats but like dogs they are often that way because of mistakes made by people. Rest assured that Jethro knows I am in charge at the barn, with large goats you can't allow any funny business. My head is not as hard as their head.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

"My head is not as hard as their head."

ROFL!!!! Ain't it the truth, Charlotte!!! ROFL Kind of like kids (pun intended).

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

I just finishing read this thread. And as I pick myself up off the floor and wipe the tears from my eyes, I can only tell ya one thing: Y'all are crazy!!! Can I come play, too? Before you answer I have to admit to something. I don't do cow poop. My best friend is horse poop. I have spent a great deal of time with horse poop. I freely admit to owning fields and piles of it. I have been known to spend a lot of my time shoveling horse poop and pine shavings into tidy little piles that I tend with loving care. (the more it ages, the better it gets!). I am not very knowledgeable about goats, but I had two of them once (back in '89). Candy (a nubian) was just as sweet as can be. I cannot say the same for her counterpart. Harold had a nasty habit of sneaking up on folks and sending them 'arse over tip' if they bent over even a little. Harold did not last long... (rip)

I can offer lots of horse manure for a best friend.... :))

Starr

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Why welcome to our thread, Starr! Sounds like you'll fit right in.

I know Moby is going to respond to your trade offering of horse poop for friendship, because she loves all kinds of manure as long as it isn't of elephant origin (this according to Tazzy). Now, Tazzy you gotta watch out for because she's a mean shot with a shotgun and you dont want to be slinking around her place or she'll think you're trying to get her elephant doo she's got hidden away.

Charlotte is another you gotta watch out for 'cuz she is kinda funny in that she travels not by car, or plane, or boat. Nope....her preferred method of transportation is G-O-A-T!! Yep, you heard me right! She puts on this air about sharing her goat poop, but really she ain't ever gonna give up Jethro because she'd be home-bound if she did.

Debi_Z's another I'd keep my eye on 'cuz she likes to start threads like this one and then leave ya high and dry while....uhhh....errrr... the poo flies. Or shall I say.....the doo hits the fan.

Then there is Wanda.....she'll try and pawn off Walker the Wonder Dog on you in trade for your friendship, but (pssstttt.....everybody here knows she'll be a garden friend to everyone without you taking Walker off her hands!) So don't let her fool you that you gotta take that garden pouncing, wall eating monster of hers to get her friendship.

Then there is Claire and Julie and they'll drop in on you every now and again to stir up trouble. They bring in all kinds of varmits....Julie with her moles and voles and bunnies, but Claire now she's the exotic one with the Alpaca manure fetish.

So as you can plainly see....I am the only one of this unruly crowd that should be considered as a reliable trader of friendship for horse manure. Afterall, isn't that the topic of this here thread....."Brenda needs a new best friend"!!

snicker....snicker....cackle.....hoot......guffaw........ Batter up!

I just noticed..... there is some kind of mud on my boots... how tacky.... is that hay in my hair? .... and y'all thought I was just kidding... *grins broadly*....

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

You got that right!!! How did ya know? I can't see a thing without contacts/glasses.... horsey folks are noted for their "earthy aroma" and "essense de barn" ... as well as hay falling out of their trucks, their hair, their purse,..... need I say more? lol

Klamath Falls, OR(Zone 6a)

You can also tell em by the hay hooks hangin out of their back pockets. Lovely steed Starr!

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

Sharvis:

AHA! You're one of us... How else would you know about the hay hooks?

Thank you for the kind words about Buddy... He thanks you, too. He is retired now and is known affectionately as Uncle Buddy, cause it was his job to take care of the weanlings. I no longer breed horses. I just kept as many of my favorites as I could. Buddy is definitely a keeper.

Gorgeous horse, Starr!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

LOL & LOL ROTFLOL! Y'all *are* crazy!!! Except for us "Goat people" of course!
>:-}{ (That's another "evil GRIN" we can use instead of MWAaaaahaaahaaa)

"Stir up TROUBLE" ? Who ME??? Brenda...now really. hehehehe

Hey Sharvis! Another one of *us*! HOORAY!! Boy! Do I know what you're saying about trying to get people to understand the *real* character of goats! They *don't* eat tin cans and, at least my *girls* wouldn't even *think* of getting their feet dirty...and talk about clean...they wouldn't eat hay that had fallen out of the manger. (I think they did THAT on purpose so they always clean bedding!) And I agree with you 150% about it not being the goat but the OWNER that's to blame for the way a goat acts. One thing you *never* want to do is 'butt heads' with a kid goat. It comes naturally to them, and they think you're ready and willing to 'play' that game. Unfortunately, once they start doing it it's very difficult (darn near impossible!) to stop them.

As for them being great friends, I had no idea just how much they were actually like dogs. My girls knew when I was having a bad day. I'd go out to the barn and tell them my tales of woe...what didn't expect was to have them 'talk' to me about it. Yep! I'd do it all again if I was younger. Tossing those hay bales from one side of the barn into the manger on the other side would be a bit hard on me now. (Hey! That's the truth! I really *toss* those bales. I even missed once, and threw the whole bale through the window above the intended target! :-D *THAT* was funny!)

You know...Now that we have Starr,
(Hi Starr! and don't listen to a THING Brenda says about me. :-D)
I think we need Susan (soulgardenlove), the poop lady, over here. I'll bet SHE could be Brenda's best friend in a heartbeat! >8-p) AND I think she might even be able to top ALL these tales of gathering poop...except for Tazzy's ELEPHANT, of course.

~julie~
(Who's having a ball reading THIS thread! exits still ROTFL)

Yes, where's Moby?? I had Moby withdrawals last week (or week before) when she didn't post for a day or two! LOL

Anyway, It's been awhile since I've been back to this thread and now I've got a tummy ache from all the out of control laughter!! You guys are going to get my abs back where they used to be. LOL I think I'll come up with a new exercise plan involving 20 min. a day of out of control laughter.

And Brenda, it looks like you've got a good mixture of friends and poop that would make a lovely brew for your garden any day! Can't you just see all the different kinds of poop worked into your soil, with the random arm or leg sticking out here and there?

Klamath Falls, OR(Zone 6a)

tazzy, you are absolutely right! We shouldn't be having all this talk about goats here. After all, this is the Lily forum. We should speak of lilies. So, I've written this little poem to get us back on the right track:

I once had a goat I called Lily,
Which was odd cause he was a billy,
I gave him that name,
As sort of a game,
Now don't y'all think that's durn silly?

YOO HOO MOBY!!!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

If that poem doesn't get a rise from Moby, she's *beyond* our reach! LOL

HEY MO-BEE-EE (You gotta YELL at that girl sometimes, to get her attention! Right Tazzy? :-D)

Well, you guys are all crazy for sure and I guess that is why I fit in. To think that I cruised by here to learn something about lilies. And saw Langbr's need for a friend. I said "Hey , thats is that posse girl from the daylily forum ! You just never know where we are gonna turn up, do you ! I may have to acutally get a few lilies !

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

LILIES SMELL PERTTY BUT DONT WHIFF OUR FEET AFTER WE BEEN IN THE GARDEN POO.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

LOL Good one, Sharv!

Starr -- don't pay any attention to Brenda. LIES!, I tell you. They're all lies!! The rest of us are...umm...'positively pristine'. >;)

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Ohhhh Moby...I'm SO glad Tazzy didn't have send a rescue squad for you. :-D

("Positively pristine" ? uh....was I dreaming? This *isn't* the same group that did "Naked Ladies"?)
hehehehehe Nearly time for snow angels, Moby. R U Ready?? :-D

~julie~

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

What ever are you talking about?? (innocently batting my eyes...)

Shouldn't 'leaf frolicking' come before 'snow angels'?

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

You first, Moby! :-D :-D (Better get hold of Wanda so she can choreograph the shebang! LOL)
