I thought I died and went to heaven!

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh, gosh................there is way too much here to read.............kell, what is the brug you are talking about here????

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I bet I do have some seeds, but I am pathetic in getting them mailed out. I will have to look.

LOL Anna, we were tlaking a lot about a brug I grew out for Susie, nicknamed Red. She has great color!

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

Kell,
I sure hope you find the seed because I would love to have a couple of them also. Just let me know what you would like or postage. I would be very grateful for them.

Spring, TX(Zone 9b)

Kell, I haven't had time to post to the brugs forum lately but WOW I am speachless! It is a dream. I have had my own brugs issues.....

I am so new to them that I don't understand where the seeds come from?

Mine is still plugging along.. Think it is in the afternoon sun that is not a good thing in Houston. Do you strip the lower leaves?

High Desert, NV(Zone 5a)

Kell, I was feeling so frustrated with brugs and bugs and wind and heat that i was threatening to give them up. Today i found this thread and WOW how lovely. I have 11 babies going strong from seed you sent. They are several months old and last week another one germinated (go figure) well seeing this thread makes me think i can make it through another winter.

No mites this winter though (fingers and toes crossed)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Melissa, mites are on everyone's mind lately! The scourge of brugs.

Listen, I got my first report back on my seeds and out of what I believe was 4 or 5 seeds I sent, the person got 2 double pinks! So I have high hopes for your seeds too!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Robin! Glad you came back to visit us!

I would think morning sun would be easier on your brugs where you live.

If I am growing a standard, I will strip any side shoots that come out unless I want some extra cuttings. Usually the lower leaves have fallen off on their own. I keep as many leaves on as possible when I am trying to grow it up tall though because leaves make food to help it grow fast.

So you want to have a talk about the birds and the bees huh? LOL

If you have 2 different kinds of brugs, you just take (or a insect takes) the pollen from one and puts it on the stigma of another. It won't work if you try it on flowers from the same cultivar of brug. Here is a great thread about it written by Susie who taught a lot of us old times how to grow brugs.
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/362576/

If it takes, you will get a pod which has lots of seeds in it, each seed is capable of making a unique and glorious brug!

Here is a ripe seed pod full of seeds!

Kell... I finally made it to the bottom of the line to tell you how beautiful your brug is. I am always amazed with what you will come up with next. Congratutions on another beauty. Cindy

Bowie, AZ(Zone 8B)

No comments in 2007. Is "Red" still around? Did I miss something? It was so exciting to see this coming out.

Me too. I would love one of these. Anyone know her name and if its available.
Beautiful.
Linda

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Linda, I believe this one is called Red. I ran across Kell's post in another thread where she link to this post. Look at Kell's 5th post in this thread:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/619239/

I doubt Red is around any more. Kell says in her post that Red was very hard to root. About 2 winters ago. she lost many of her Brugs to that unusually cold and prolonged cold spell California had.

Well that was quite an adventure ...the ending was a bit sad though ...did any of the seedlings go on to be registered or has the bloodline run out? ...did anyone ever remember what the cross was? and did it die of the cold or just because the cuttings would not "catch" what a shame. I can't even imagine how anyone would feel finding a bloom like that ...wow ...thankyou for a peek at paradise lost ...never mind most of us will never know the joy of meeting such a bloom ...

chrissy, the parents aren't listed in the Register of Brugmansias. In fact, the only thing I found in the Register is the cultivar name. Kell mentioned Callalily, that's Susie French, somewhere in one of the threads, but I'm not sure whether the seed came from her or from some other cross of hers. Kell used to grow so many Brugs that she ran out of room in her yard. At one point, she had a number of growing plots spread throughout the little town of Crockett. That cold spell killed many (most?) of her Brugs. Not long after that she quit posting on this forum. I always enjoyed her comments. I was mostly lurking back then since I was such a novice.

What a shame ...I feel sad to know that. Thanks for the feedback ...I notice a lot of those names are not names I see any longer ...such a big adventure breeding coloured Angels ...I guess you all have so many ...it is no longer the huge challenge it once was ...we are just beginning that challenge here and the total love and joy ...and yes even the sadness teaches us so much ...it wasn't very long ago I was too shy to ask any questions ...I was dying to know what a noid was ...ha ha ha I felt such a dill when I was finally told ...and the magical day when I was cruising the Classic threads and came across callalily instructing us how to make seeds ...what a huge revelation that was ...people like the wonderful gardener who started this exciting thread have so inspired us ...and the lovely friendly answers to our novice questions is so appreciated ...thanks so much to you and everyone in this and all the wonderful Brugmansia threads!

I don't know how I missed this thread and such a beautiful brug. Way to go, Kell. : )

Concord, CA(Zone 9a)

I live in the same basic area of CA as Kell and also lost lots of plants that winter. Very rare here to get a freeze at all let alone for a couple of weeks. I remember saying my garden looked like a grave yard. lol. Alot of my plants came back from the roots. Thank goodness. very depressing winter mostly because we are not used to that. Kell had some beautiful brugs. It was always so much fun reading her posts. She is so funny and nice. I have seen her post on the coleus treads.
Sure wish I had one of these brugs.
Linda

Wow beautiful Kell congratulations I hope you do well with this one I would deffinately call her Ruby for sure................LOL

James

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

James, she was called Red and may not be around anymore. Kell has not posted in the Brug forum for quite a while.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Brin emailed me that this thread was up. Oh Veronica, I am not around here only because I am not in love with brugs as I once was. I still have too many and too many seedlings too but I must say mites put a huge damper on my enthusiasm. I am sick of feeling like I have a toxic waste dump for a yard. I rarely get any other insects, just mites on the brugs. But I so loved all the brug people here. I remember when I literally lived here. LOL. I find my taste has evolved too from gaud brug blooms to elegant rustling bamboo and even more lately to the textures and colors of succulents. What a switch from weedy brugs!

Yes, Red bit the dust. I think it got cucumber mosaic if I recall correctly. (Though I lost tons of brugs in that freeze we had, Linda. That was a bad winter.) A friend or 2 may still have it. I loved the color but not the form. It was a Susie cross. I will try to remember who the parents were. It never got officially named but Red was a nickname from someone on here.

So let it be a lesson to anyone who grows out a seedling they love, take a cutting or 2 ASAP in case the seedling drops dead.

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Well, Kell, it was purdy while it lasted. At least, we know one like that is possible. : ) May it rest in peace. : )

Hi Kell,
I guess everyone evolves. I've run across your posts here and there. Glad to hear you're still growing Brugs. I don't have much of a problem with mites living so far from any other Brugs, but I almost lost most of my collection last year. I developed a slight complication after surgery and couldn't water my plants. DH made such a fuss about watering, I let them go. Those Brugs that survived had grown into the ground — about 5 of them. I've acquired a few more in the past few months.

I've diversified into caudiciformes, plumerias and fruit trees.

Hi Kell ...thankyou so much for giving us an end to the story ...RIP
dear little Red ...gardens and gardeners evolve, such a shame you had all that trouble after such excitment ...however you do realize that we now have the story of that mystical ...magical Red ...it surely will be forever a story to rival most treasure hunts ...thanks for the map ....hmmmm Susan huh? ...ha ha ha ...good on you mate!

Bowie, AZ(Zone 8B)

Thanks for the update, Kell. Really sorry to hear of the fate of such a pretty one. But someday.....there will be a true red, I hope.
Still like brugs here but space is an issue for overwintering, and aphids and mites a problem inside in the winter. High winds and hot dry climate is rough on them here, too.
farizona

A winner for sure. Did I miss the parentage on this one?
Can someone post info regarding parentage?
Well done, Kell!!!

Hi Girlfriend! Good to see you!

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Liz, you might try contacting Susie French. Kell mentioned it was one of Susie's crosses.

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

Susie isnt growing brugs anymore.. she now lives in a condo..

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Liz may just want to know the Red's parentage.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Veronica, I just received 2 variegated and oh so fancy plumeria from Thailand via eBay yesterday and both are rotting on delivery. I never learn. I just bought my first caudiciforms 2 weeks ago, HELP! I wonder if I can buy just 1. LOL I am so sorry about your plants. I would have bopped my DH on the head for sure.

Hello Chrissy from Australia! We are getting so many Australian plants here in California now. I love them! I would love to come to see your homeland.

I hear you farizona. Brugs are so bug prone, they are challenging!

Oh Elva, a big HELLO to you. I feel so guilty that I suck at emailing. I am so good at putting responding off till tomorrow but tomorrow never comes. I have no clue what I do all day. I have kept tabs on you thru Ada though. I miss your sunshine personality and your enthusiasm for life!

Actually Susie now lives in a huge house that is so beautiful and has a huge garden and even a fruit orchard. She rents out that condo. She is painting a lot now, watercolors. She has shows for her artwork. I do not think she is into brugs at all anymore but to tell the truth we have not talked brugs in a couple of years. LOL, how things change. I doubt she knows Red's parents, she sent me hundreds of seeds. I can ask her though. She lost the cutting of Ruthie I gave her years ago, I do believe.

Hi Liz, I know I have the parents written some where on my computer along with Ruthie's. I have been meaning to answer your email but as I mentioned above I so suck at it. I actually went out to check if I had some side shoots on Ruthie for you but I do not. It is about 16 feet high and grew from a dead stump from winter up thru a forest over winter. She is a natural standard. It is towering over everything now. I thought I had lost Ruthie forever. But Ruthie is such a survivor. When I went into the jungle to check for you, I could not believe that I had a new shoot from another dead Ruthie stump from 2 YEARS AGO!! No growth at all for over 2 years, so surely that plant must have been dead but it resurrected itself. How is that even possible. Got to admire a plant like that.

I will be cutting her down soon to root for I dare not tempt fate a 3rd time. I can get a couple end pieces for you then.

Here is the shoot from a stump that is over 2 years dead.

Kell, What a flamboyant beauty you have! She is so tropical looking! Enjoyed all those gorgeous photos......I'm green with envy :) Hoping this beauty grows well in the hot, humid south. If she does, I would love to purchase one.

You & your Mom are in my prayers.

Kell save ma a cutting of Ruthie...I lost mine

Thanks, Kell. I would appreciate the information.

Kell, I can sympathize with you over the bugs. I have had more bugs of more kinds than I have ever seen before in my life. I try to not use pesticides except as a last resort since I don't want a toxic dump either. We had a cool summer so the brugs didn't scent the yard like previous years. I said that if this was my first year growing them, I probably wouldn't do it again. I hope next year will be better. I'd hate to think I'm dragging in 150 + brugs for this little bit of reward.

Linda

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Hi Kell, glad to 'see' ya. My few remaining brugs have not bloomed at all this summer. Not 1 bloom. When I start hauling tropicals etc into the gh for the winter, my few will hit the street. The only 1 I will keep is Culebra which is slow growing, never bloomed but maybe one day. I just love the different leaves on that one. I guess I just got burned out on brugs. They work you to death. It was fun for a few years tho, growing out the seeds and seeing what they produced (not much for me as I lack sunshine). What I enjoyed most was chatting with all my brug friends.
