Kell!
I hope your mom is doing ok!
I am sending up prayers for her and you!
Can you tell me why you won't list the parents of this flower?
Just wondering!
Huggzzzz
Phil
I thought I died and went to heaven!
Gosh I must have missed this thread lately! I have tried to bring it up a few times but it wouldn't open.
Anyway thanks for asking about my Mom. She is doing remarkably well. She has about 9 more radiation treatments left out of 36. I will going back soon to get her settled back into her house or perhaps she will decide to go to an extended care for awhile to recoup.
Pphil1, I didn'lt tell just to be mean. And now I can't remember. So that serves me right! I am hoping the tag is just down below the soil line!
In looking at this thread again I had forgoten how dark she was. Gosh such a beauty! I have one bloom on her now and every day she gets lighter. LOL. It is so odd since we have had a terrible heat wave here all week. I was expecting her to be so dark. I need to ask Monika about it. Maybe it can tell it is fall?
HI KELL I HOPE YOUR MOM RECOVERS I WILL KEEP HER IN MY PRAYERS. A BEUATIFUL BRUG YOU CERTAINLY HAVE THE TALENT IN GROWING THEM. MY ARE DOING FINE BUT I HAVE QUITE A FEW THAT ARE NOT BLOOMING. BOB
kell Your Mom and you are in my prayers.
That color is unbelievable
Kell does Susie remember the parentage of the seeds she sent you to grow? This was from Susie right?
kell - in case you're still watching this - Congratulations. New to brugs and I was just asking today if there were any true red ones like the classic tulip or applie. Brugie pointed me to this thread.
Hope it continues to bloom that same color!!
Ok Kell! Now you have done it!
I have some of Susies seedlings planted in the yard and I was planning on cutting them off after the frost. After seeing that beautiful bloom, I am off to dig all of them! And I thought I was out of space but there is always room for a few more, right?
I wish this was a true red! LOL. It is a beauty! I can't wait to see if it gets darker at Susie's. I am about to move it into the hoophouse tomorrow. It had mites so I have been treating it.
I truly have no clue what parentage it is. I thought I would never forget it. I bet there is a tag down in the pot. Maybe when I move it, I will peak.
Meltn, if they have Yed, you could cut off the top to root and they would take up less room! I have lots I must winter over also. Next year will be a nightmare with 2 years worth of seedlings.
Thanks for well wishes for my Mother. She turned 86 last Saturday!

I just absolutely love this one!!
Kell, I'm going to take my cuttings this week and I would like to know if you could tell me what is the absolute shortest tree you would root?? I intend to put mine in the ground, so the height has to come from the plant, since there will be no pot. I don't want to waste my time and limited space on a shorty, when I can do as you mentioned above and take cuttings above the Ys and wait until next season for more trees. TIA!!
I do not quite understand your question Sherry. It depends for what you want the plant. For a seedling, most are anxious for it to take up the least amount of room and to bloom quickly. I would take a piece of the Y to plant for it would bloom quickly next spring. I am not so concerned with how a seedling looks first go round, but in its flower.
If I want an allee tree, I cut my biggest sucker at the ground level so it is as tall as possible from the beginning.
Hope this helps.
Yes, that is exactly what I needed to know, re cutting the sucker at the ground, except, what would be the absolute shortest sucker you would cut. Assuming I root some, mine will be going in the ground. I have one that is about 7 1/2 feet tall, but I'm thinking that might not really be tall enough. Thanks so much for your reply. The temp is dropping rapidly here but I don't expect it to frost quite yet, but I gotta get busy, whew!!
I'm at the stage that I need to kick myself in the fanny and force myself to 'just do it' before the time runs out...
8 1/2 ft is fine for an allee tree. I t will still grow after it is rooted.
Kell let me get this straight. If I want a tall tree again next year I cut the old one at ground level and take the cutting however long and reroot it during the winter and replant come spring. If so do you trim out the top down to where? I just cut down my biggest one into cuttings. Anyone want Ericks White. got 17 cuttings in water.
Ted
Ted, I'm not Kell, but this is what I did - about two/three months ago, I cut an almost 8 foot sucker from a two year old plant, stuck it in a pot and it rooted in no time, and it's one blossom (it was full but wind/hail got all but this one) opened today, and has started turning pink, but unknown, drats, but that is okay too, it's beautiful!! The straighter the sucker or shoot, the better, mine is okay, but next year, of course, I hope to do better. I have gotten a one week reprieve, which means I will not get a frost until next week, at least, but, I'm starting to rev up my GH where I will aerate my cuttings, using the simple, inexpensive system that LindaSC uses, and give rooting in water a go. Since everything else has worked that all of the wonderful DG mentors have told me, I figure I'll do okay rooting in water, which I've never had much luck with. In addition, I will be concentrating on seeds, which are my new passion. I hope this answers your question, I'm sure Kell or someone else with join us and fill in the gaps I might have left. This season, I learned that I can grow, root brugs and I can grow seedlings. Next season, I will concentrate on insect prevention, building up (in height) a couple of beds, and a better and more consistent water/feeding program. At this time, I'm thinking less is better, but I'm open to any and all suggestions!! Hope your T-day was a great one Ted, et al, we've had a quite, but wonderful day...
Ted, if you do not want to dig it up, just cut it at the base. Also cut the canopy back to 4 to 6 nodes off each branch of the first Y. You want to have few leaves while the stalk roots. I plant my big cuttings in a 5 gallon pot, all the way to the bottom so it puts out a good root system fast.
Thanks that answers my question. So, even better you could just dig it up and trim the roots back to fit the bucket and trim back the top like you said. Ted
I planted mine all the way to the bottom too, Kell, but did it to keep it balanced better. I'm glad to know that will help them root fast and mine surely did, so I would say you are correct!!
Yes, Ted. Cut the canopy enough so the trimmed roots can support it. So as the roots grow back so will the canopy fatten out again.
Bringing this up for Karen.
Gorgeous......I am glad Brugie brought this one back up. It is still so amazing to me the color on this one. I am anxious to see it again next summer along with Kell's new beauties.
Still amazing.
Thanks. It actually is blooming now, and though dark for now, it is not dark. But still an odd color! I just touched Sexy Lady and RK with her, though I bet they do not pod for me at this late date.
Still no one has her but me since Susie murdered 2 of them!!! LOL. Makes me nervous. I will try to get one off to Brugie next to trial, and I will grow one big before I send it to Susie again! LOL Unfortunately, she is a prima donna to start!
Kell -- how 'bout a picture of her, this time of year???
How big is she now Kell? Gosh, to have the one and only would make me nervous too.
It does make me nervous. LOL I have no time to go out now. I was on the phone with my mother for 2 hours. So I am late for everything! have to go to PO. I will look tonight. It has been storming here for a couple of days so I have not even gone out to the hoophouse. I really need to! I t is so wet out there though, the blooms are weird looking ususally! If one is decent I will take a pic.
Linda, she is tall but no side branches so I have to cut from her Y to get cuttings and they are too green!
On the weather this morning, it looked like there were some pretty strong winds and very bad weather in the NW. I think one of my new projects will be to find a world map and put peoples names where they live. I didn't pay enough attention when I was supposed to be learning geography.
I think I would be cutting that baby down and rooting the trunk in pieces to make sure it isn't lost. It's just too pretty.
I have to agree with Shirley on her advice. That's what I did with two of mine that I just loved. I have five trunk cuttings of each one. They may prove unworthy of sharing, but in case they end up being keepers, I at least have them (barring disaster!).
Sending the Brug Fairy to bless this one for you :)
Oh my Kell, I just saw this thread for the 1st time today, and am Star Struck, that is the most beautiful Brug I have ever seen, I had to pick up my mouth from the floor and so did my DH!!!!!!! I've spent the last hour reading this entire thread, someday when you run out of friends to share it with, I would love a cutting, Red and Purple are my favorite colors!!!
I wish your Mother well, Chemo is difficult I know since I've been there, I wish and pray for her health to get better, know I'm thinking of you, Annie
Thanks Annie. The rate I am going no one is ever going to have this brug. LOL. Maybe I should move it inside. It is doing very well in the hoophouse though. Sexy Lady is having a heart attack out there. All, and I mean all her leaves are yellow.
I was watering her everyday outside and just realized her roots must be so rootbound I should have been watering her everyday in the hoophouse. Her pods still look OK. Woe is me esp when I do such a dumb maneuver.
Here is red this morning! No flowers left.
OH NO!!!!!!! Well, I'm wishing Sexy Lady a fast recouperation as well, sigh.... and hope she'll be well in no time!!!!! Oh, but what a beautifull show she put on, looks like she fainted, maybe just a little too much limelight! a little tender care from you and I'm sure we'll see RED again soon, Annie
Bummer, Kell! From the looks of her trunk, she probably does need a root and canopy trim. I'll be hoping for her speedy recovery!!!
Kell & Susie,
What ever happen with this beautiful brug!!! Is it being sold now? I just happened upon it while doing research on Bayer & Cutter... don't know how this thread turned up on my list.
Drooling here.
Judy
Not that I can add to what has already been said but, Fantastic, cant begin to tell you how thrilled I am with your plant Bravo!!!
Oh what fun to see this brug again. Look at that scrumptious color.
What a real thrill this brug was. I still remember when I first saw it. I just could not believe my eyes!!! I had a terrible time getting it to root though. It has not been released. A few people got cuttings to trial. Susie had an almost red one grow up where she planted Red though she had thought it died, so she may still have it. And I know another friend has it growing. Mine got cucumber mosaic virus and was destroyed. However, I still have tons of pollen frozen and sent out lots of Red seed. I think I even have some Double Pink X Red seeds. YUM YUM Good. LOL
Must....have....rootlings.....(gasp)....must...have.....
Hi Kell,
If you still have any of those seeds left, would you consider sending a couple my way for postage? I'm not a real grower, so I don't need names or anything like that. I just would like to have another brug to keep my lovely, unknown white company. And if the seeds turn out even close to the one you originally posted about, I'm sure it will be lovely.
If not though, that's ok.
LoraB.
