I think that is what it is. I got it at the master gardener plant sale.

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

I hope some of you might know the answer to this question. Most of my Japanese MG that are blooming are not setting seed. Not even the Chocolate Silk, Pink or Blue Picotee, or the Sunrise Mix. None are setting seeds. Any ideas why or what can be done about it.....

No morning glory thread would be complete without ipomoea acuminata, my personal favorite.

Dee, maybe it is just too early for them to start producing seed heads?? Anyone else in your area growing mg's and if so, are theirs producing seed? With your longer growing season, perhaps it just takes longer for them?

Flicker, lovely shot, I have one growing in a container, yet to see a bloom, but patience I have learnt here LOL

Pam!!! That is a gorgeous one too. I am up to true leaves now LOL, soooooooooooo someday I will also have some blooms if the wind and rain storms would ever quit here.

They all look wonderful!!

Dee, you've heard of Sex in the City. Now you need to learn about Sex in the Garden... You may need to do a little risque pollination yourself. lol

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Beautiful picture Flicker! Gotta love them blues....

Laurrie - the Chocolate Silk is at WW's - I just get the credit for snapping the shot....lol. When yours start blooming it will be well worth the wait.

I thought I read somewhere that some MG's need to be pollinated by hand or by nature.....

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

pins - yep, pollen was flying in WW's garden today with that "paintbrush tickler".....lol.

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

Geez, that flower is huge! I am impressed!
Oh, and MG's are self pollinating, they have both pieces of equipment in each flower, so even if you tie off each bud like I do before they even open, you are gonna get seeds. I would not give up Dee, I think the Jap MG's are slower anyway. I have not even started getting any blooms on them yet, even though I planted at the same time as my regular ones & they have been blooming for a while now.

Good info Donna - I'm gonna give that a whirl when I start getting more blooms.

Blue Dawn aka Ipomoea acuminata today (grown in full sun)......

**edited to add Blue Dawn does not normally set seed, it is propagated by cuttings.

Oh !! I am so envious. I absolutely love morning glories and haven't even gotten mine planted yet. I did manage to do a trade with a lady from China for a couple variety's of morning glory seeds, I guess I had better get busy. I did just plant to five gallon pots of Blue Dawn against
our back fence which is a stone sound wall. It should look pretty here shortly. I saw my first bloom on it a couple day's ago. I better get busy on the rest of my morning glory's.

Patricia, Stand Back!!
5 pots of Blue Dawn will cover your TOWN in a few months.
But it will be pretty.

* The vine pictured started from 1 tiny little piece. It did this the first spring that it was planted.

Girls yall need to look closely at the Choclate Silk Mutation, (or some other cross not quite sure just yet), Moonlighting posted. It was up to high for us to get a picture of so I picked it and held it for Moon to get a good shot at. This flower was about 7-8 inches across, yes it was as big as it looks, I'm holding it with both hands. Most of them on that side are really big like that ...just thought you would want to know.....Sure wish I knew which one of you I got those seeds from.....

I want to make a floating wall, made with netting. It will be on a angle with the vines exploding out through it. of red cardinal climbers mg 10 or 12 ft long using these. What can I expect of the seeds getting plants. The saucers have popped about 50 per cent so far. The red ones had a total of about 35 seeds. I don't need that many, do half that?

Cardinal vines and cypress vines have such small fines leaves (cypress is finer than cardinal). I think it is according to how thick you want it.

I want to see your plants on the netting Monterey!

I have faith there will be lots of pictures! *snickers*

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Snapped this picture this morning. This is the first bloom on this plant and I noticed that this bloom was having a little trouble unwrapping itself. I can see the beauty thru the defect tho. It's Heian no Yoso-oi. This bloom is very big - can't wait to see how big the others are.

**edited to add: I measured this bloom and it's almost 5" across.

Really enjoyed looking at all the beautiful MG pictures. I have quite a few planted but they are just beginning to grow outside where I planted them earlier. We have finally gotten some rain. That is why I had a few minutes to sit down at the computer, it is wet outside,. I have had a couple of small pink MG blooms but that is all so far. Donna

Those are all gorgeous!!! is the electric blue Hatsu Arashi? Glorious whatever it is. And the Yosaooi is very inspiring too :)

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Laurrie I think it is Hatsu but it is down the river bank where I would not have planted it and no tag. I think it is a survivor of the Armadillo raids as I told Moon. Hatsu is what it looks like from all the photos I've seen. It is bigger than the one earlier and has not a hint of purple in it. But of course it is planted totally different, this one is in almost full sun most of the day and the first one posted is in total shade all day...This bloom is the second or third, as that is the evidence I see on the plant, just didn't see it until the other day and then couldn't get a photo until now.
Oh and I am beginning to find that my Sunrise Mix and Chocolate silk are begining to set seeds so I guess I was jumpin the gun a little. The pods are to big to be from my hand pollinating the other day. I guess me and Moon just didn't look close enough.... I also see tons of these little tiny black ants all over the MG's so I am guessing they are helping things along. I didn't see them the other day either....LOL...better get me some new glassess
LMK whatcha think.... :o)
Dee

Correction from Moonlighting......this blue one is Akatsuki Umi "Sea".
and she said.....LOL....
Your blue is Akatsuki Umi "Sea"......Hatsu doesn't have var. leaves. http://davesgarden.com/fp.php?pid=630141
