Beautiful, Delicate Morning Glories

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

My Morning Glory seeds come from several sources. I was in on the MG co-op that Sbarr had a few months back. Other members have sent me seeds and I have bought from Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, and some of the local nurseries in my area. I have also recived MG seeds on E-bay...... I must say I have been collecting seeds for quite awhile and have only planted maybe half of what I have. I don't want to over run myself with them and not have true seeds although I wouldn't mind if some of the cross, I have a flying sauce the is Blue and White with a red streak that I am pretty sure is a mutation. I am trying to get a good photo of it to post and maybe when the rains stop I can...... :o)

Dee, just wanted to say how beautiful your morning glories are and also to ask you a question. I was lucky enough to get some seeds from Brugie from the SBarr Co-Op and I planted them into one gallon pots. Are these one gallon pots going to be big enough, and are the mg tap roots long. I hate to transplant them now, they are on their four true leaves and I am afraid to move them anywhere..lol.

Also, I ordered several more seeds from Parks and used their 10.00 coupon off the 25.00 order, so you can get them for 16.95 with shipping. the code is Q1A886 and you enter it on your order. Just got the seeds today and will be planting some out tomorrow.

WillowWasp, the seeds I got from you for the Fuzzybean vine germinated and the plants are pretty tall now. Thanks for the pictures..

Edited to say: the 10.00 coupon expires on May 28, 2004

Well to answer your question, if it were me I would transplant the one gallon up to at least a 5 gallon, I really don't think the one gallon will be good for long. They will be alright in the one's for awhile but I think as they grow and the season heats up it will be a problem keeping them watered enough. But I would wait until they are a little bigger and then transfer the whole gallon and not remove them from the soil they are in......Remember MG's don't like to be transplanted, so take as much soil with them as you can, keep the roots covered.

The Milky Way I have in a 5 gallon bucket is really big and I can see the difference in how much I have to water them now. If they were in a one gallon pot I don't think I could keep up and they would drop most of the buds.

I would have everything ready to move them and then water them in and put them in a shady location for a few days and they should be fine. Let us know how they do and get ready to take lots of pictures...

Dee are you using a tripod? If you do you can set your aperture to get more depth of field and get in close. I took this picture at f5.6 and a half a second that way I got more of the flower in focus, it was getting dark. Your flowers are so detailed I would love to see in them.

WOW Monterey, that is one nice picture. I have a Sony Cyber-shot, and I guess for the money I paid it does a good job. I am looking at some other cameras but that may be awhile before I get another one. What are you using?
The picture is really clear and well detailed....good job....

This is a bat flower and it is a little blurred but still pretty good. Maybe as you say if I used a tripod it would be clearer...I will have to try it and see..... thanks for the tip....

People always think that flowers don't move, but I always have a wind problem. I get the focus and I move or the plant moves. The tripod makes the field your shooting constant. I had 5 mins to shot 18 pics. Holding my breath on shots gets tiresome and the shake of doing it shows. Digital cameras slowness can be good in slow shots ,it doesn't pick up the vibration of the button being pushed.. People tell me I don't have a cable release on my camera. Use the timer set the shot hit timer stand back. You look like you take a lot of shots in shaded light. A great idea, better colors then sun . The next best thing can be flash,or the worst. I love digital because I know in an instant what works. If your sony has a bracketing feature read about it. Good luck! I saw your Passiflora shots tonight looking through the database this is another one of mine, Allspice.

Another nice one, passie's are very photogentic......LOL.....
I will look at my user guide again and see what all I can do to improve my shots. I know I have a good camera but really havent' played with it enough to see what all it can do. Most of my yard is shaded and I will usually wait until shade on a flower to take a photo, I agree these are the best shots. The sun seems to "Wash" the color....

You have the eye, that's what makes a good photographer. All the other stuff comes along the more you shoot. The talent is built in to you. It can't be taught,or learned. You have the key ingredient. Just keep shooting! This is my Passiflora Coral Seas.

And another I finally caught one of.....I have been watching this one for several days. As promised I finally got a photo of it. This is what I suspect is a mutation of the Flying Saucer, let me know if this is a known varitety. I haven't seen this before and maybe one of you have. This is from seed I think I got from Laurrie. :o)

WillowWasp,
That flower is beautiful!!!!

Do you have any more seeds?

its a blue tye dye morning glory. the purple stripes in it probably come from crossing of a star of yelta or grandpa otts as i have never seen the blue tye dye with purple in it/. i may be wrong though about the purple streaks. but i have had the blue tye dyed ones before.

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Right now I don't have any seeds but will be collecting them as soon as I can. Keep up with this thread and I will keep all informed when I have enough seeds to trade. :o)

I'd just like to ask a question on MGs. I was given some seeds and they germinated no problem. Trouble is their leaves have yellowed and they look sick. They are in the greenhouse. Can anyone tell me whether they are too hot or not hot enough. Do they like full sun or shade. Your help would be appreciated.

Dee, all of your Morning Glories are so pretty. thanks for sharing. ~Angela

I grow my MG's in all conditions, full sun, partial shade to full shade. I guess this is the year I will see which one does the best. So far the partial shade is doing the best and some that are in full sun are a close second. Course it isn't very hot yet either. I have the full sun ones in 5 gallon bucket so they can be moved if need be.
To answer you question about the yellowing leaves could be a combination of a lot of things. To much sun to quickly or to little sun, to much water and so on. I have some Anderson MG's that are yellowed and not doing well. They are planted the same way all the others are but these are not doing well. They just won't grow. OH well win some lose some.....LOL...I will let yall know how they do.... :o)

my mgs like shade. here in the south the sun scorches them. partial shade is good too. really nothing here in south carolina likes full sun. it just way to hot for things.

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

I just ordered some of the Japanese red and blue MG like WillowWasp. I can't wait to get them. It's great to see that they really do look as pretty as the picture on eBay. I also LOVE the Orange Noah one and would love to trade for some seeds when they become available! Thanks for sharing your beautiful pics!!

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Sorry this photo is a little dark but this one had started openening late this evening and I didn't want to wait until morning to get a picture. This is Hatsu Arashi, I bought the seeds from Poppy Sue.

And this one is planted in 100% shade, it has good light but no direct sunlight at all.

This is the only draw back I've found at this time with the larger Japanese type MG's. This is Chocolate Silk and the damage is from a little bit of wind. They don't take wind at all so when you plant yours keep that in mine.... :o)

Hi again Dee. I am still drooling, but since mine have started blooming, it is more manageable. LOL.
I wanted to say, I find the ones that I grow in a shady area stay open all day. I think the foliage is denser in full sun & there may be more flower production, but I don't mind trading that in for blooms that last all day. Do you find the same thing?
My blue dawn is the only MG I have that stays open all day even in full sun.
Donna

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

OH my.. those flowers are so beautiful.

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes I agree the ones with more shade do much better. I just wonder how they are going to do when the temps go up. They should do even better. Most of my MG's are in the shade or mostly shaded, so far this hasn't been a problem.

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

I got my first ever Morning Glory bloom today, I'm doing a happy dance! And I swear when I first saw it, I screamed like a little girl. hehe . Oh yea, its President Tyler. Not the best quality picture, my dig. camera's trying to crap out on me.

I have a question about morning glories, i just bought a bunch of seeds and i am looking for creative ways to display the flowers. I am going to plant sunflowers and let them crawl up the stalk, but has anyone heard of doing the same with okra? It just seems like a cheap trellis!! Also, if i plant them in pots, how large of a pot should I use? The pictures on this thread are inspiring me! Thanks in advance for any information.

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

These are so BEAUTIFUL !!! :-)))))))) ....and I got soooooooo inspired by your pictures that I went rummaging thru a box with old seeds to find a package of 1997 "Heavenly Blue" and a 1999 "Scarlet O'Hara" Morning Glory seeds .......they are soaking right now...hopefully I will get at least a few plants out of them......
THANK YOU so much for sharing your pictures and giving me a lift in difficult times,
Brigitte

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

This is a surprise, it is a seed from my Chocolate Silk package. I don't remember who sent them to me since I didn't write that information down. So if you remember sending me Chocolate Silk or Rose Silk let me know.
This is a very beautiful flower and I think it is a mutation have any of yall seen this before?
