REMEMBER: NO DISCUSSION OF CURRENT EVENTS

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Thank you Dave & Weez for that clarification. I figured that was the case - but ya never know unless you ask! :-)

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I think Chris (BuriedTreasures) put it really nicely in the "Crisis in Asia" thread, if I may take the liberty of quoting:

http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/475590/

Quoting:

They're allowed, as long as people keep their senses, and leave the political aspects out of it.

OK = "What a tragedy. What can we/I do to help."

Not OK = What a tragedy. We're doing more than you to help"

That kind of reminder never hurts, for me at least. :-)

With 121 replies and 3586 views (is this for real?) as of this posting this thread is like a woodchuck in a cabbage patch. Can't believe that lawns or even roses could inspire such activity. Once the word gets around everyone who has a computer will be tuning in. My Lord, just think what that would do to response and thread posting times, as well as administrative overhead.

LOL!

I'll agree to that Dave. This garden must be a place to rest, to wonder and enjoy friendship and all the wonderfull blessings this world can keep.

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Very very true, Saya.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Yes I agree with Saya, Donna

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

Saya,long time no see.
I am very happy to meet you in here.
I quite agree with you.
There is a saying which goes
'If you want to be happy for a day,get drunk;for a month,get married;for a lifetime,take up gardening.'
We come here to seek for happiness, not for hostilities.
So let's set the current political debate aside, shall we?

Thanks for the bump guys. I didn't realize that we had a policy of no current events until just now. That probably explains why this is such a nice site though! Thanks.

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Me too sylvi74. I should have read this thread long ago!

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Jianhua, it was your own Confucius who is said to have quoted that! How true those words are!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Maybe this thread should be a 'Sticky' in this forum - ? Might help it to be seen by all the newbies in coming years. What do you think, Dave?

Mississauga, ON(Zone 6a)

I think this is a mighty fine rule.

I visit another very small gardening site that has 2 forums. One for 'Gardening' and the other for 'General'.

At times, the 'General' has posts about News events and it can get very hot and heavy. Not what I'm there for.

Thank you for putting this rule in place and enforcing it.

Just reading the words "God", "prayers" and "Christians" is upsetting to me on the DG site. Not what I come here for.

Like any true gardener, none of us like weeds and DG has done a great job of keeping out the weeds. Some will say weeds are just misplaced plants but still I believe, like DG, its not what we are growing here. Its a fair and balanced rule that all of us who surf DG's web site should abide by. Simply put, its a weed free zone. Sure wish my garden was! Way to grow Dave!

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

cee..., enjoy: http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/prayer/all/

Ulrich, don't hassle cee. I think you are being insensitive to him.

Cee: if it offends you, just stay in the gardening-related forums and you should be fine. :-)

best,
dave

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Sorry, Dave;
bad Max, the Devil made me do it.
Making a New Year's resolution.

Henderson, NV(Zone 9b)

I feel the same way as Cee does, although I'm less offended by such words. I visit and subscribe to this site because I want to learn about plants and gardening. I want to know how other people grow and take care of their plants, and maybe contribute some of my own knowledge. No matter what our background is, and we all have different backgrounds and opinions, everyone here has one thing in common. We all enjoy plants and gardening and I think that this site is mainly for that. Thanks Dave for keeping this a gardening site.

Franklin, NC(Zone 6b)

Dave and Terry are right. There was a forum supported where I work so our customers could help each other and ask for advice, but it turned into a cruel and vicious political and religious debate site. It was shocking. They had to shut it down.

San Jacinto County, TX(Zone 8a)

I jus happended by!
Joined this board for gardening etc.

However there are aspects I find not only enlighting but interesting. Gardeners are emotional by nature. Lol least I am. I can't post a site of mine telling about as a child how I felt seeing my first seed sprout.
Emotional as I recall. Long time ago!

Political and Religious Debate [IS] a hostile environment.
Should a given person have a certain persuasion and have the need to use words expressing them selfs its ok with me !

Their husband or child survived and they are of western world christain or eastern moslem I don't see where it matters!
There arn't trying to convert. They just have a temporary need to express their gratefullness.

Seems like many express similarities To Dave & DG Family Admin.
Think about it!

Glad this thread ended up where I found it easily - I wasn't truly aware of the depth of Dave's feelings about keeping the distressing realities out of this forum - I surely have very strong feelings about some of them but it is much better to have this forum as a refuge. Right On Dave!

I slipped a little bit (being a newbie) and referred to something people may worry about - not in a nasty way of course - but the depressing stuff can be talked about elsewhere. Better to think about gardening and pleasant pursuits here for sure :)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

mayflwrhem, a HEARTY WELCOME TO DG! I'm sure you'll feel very comfortable here! Hope to see you around the site. Come on in and set a spell!

Sheesh, this is the first time I've seen this thread, and I've been a member for long enough that I should have run across it before! I'm a graduate student in college and we are encouraged to discuss everything. I enjoy seeing issues from different points of view and I feel like I learn a lot from those discussions. (I'm also very sensitive and occasionally get hurt feelings. Ideology is present in all arenas.) I was questioning this policy at first, but now I'm convinced: I TOTALLY agree with Dave's policy here! I can very much identify with him not wanting to be responsible for running a site where people become hostile to eachother. It's one thing to have lively debates in a college classroom, but a totally different and unnecessary thing on DG (especially since it's so easy to misread a person's intentions in an electronic post). I really appreciate the support and advice I get here-- there's really nothing like it! Thanks Dave. :)

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

Very well said Danak.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

I refuse to take a radio or telephone into my own garden. I'm thankful that this "news free zone" envelops DG as well.

Dallas, TX

Gee, I am so glad I am politcally ignorant! Therefore you cant discuss anything with me, I would not know where to start or how to defend myself or take a stand on anything. The only reason I know Bush is because of the jokes and the re-mixed pictures that run rampant thru the internet. btw ..have you seen the one where.....never mind. LOL!
Anyway Dave has a point. I have seen groups torn apart due to the difference in opinons and ideosyncrasies of some people ... it can be devastating!

I come in peace for peace.

I'm here to share GARDENING. If I want to address other topics,
certainly there are subject specific internet groups for such.

Like eating cheese! LOL

You'll hear no religious or political comment from this section of the bleachers.
It's not just a rule, it's common courtesy. Even as a child I was taught there are
things you don't discuss in the presence of friends.

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

I will admit to being part of a BIG political go around a few years ago. lt really got hot and heavy with sides throwing insults here and there. It even attracted non-gardeners from who knows where. We were entirely wrong, as I am sure we all would agree. This site is for the serious stuff-gardening.

There are much better sites to vent approval or unapproval (no such word Google says) of politicians and/or positions. Most newspapers give the opportunity.

Edited for spelling

I'm glad there's no politics. I don't watch daytime tv and I rarely use the phone. I love being in my own little world of beautiful flowers and trees. That's why I'm on this website everyday!

Sheffield, United Kingdom(Zone 7b)

I joined this web site because it is about gardening. If people want to talk about religion, politics etc. they should find another site for their discussions. Most people garden to be close to nature, relax, clear their mind, and leave their troubles behind. Please keep this a stress-free zone.

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks Dave!!!!

Bensenville, IL(Zone 5a)

Hi Dave, Been awhile since I've logged on here but just wanted to say the site looks wonderful, you've made so many changes. Great Job! Denise

Welcome back Denise, and thanks for the kind words. :)

Bismarck, ND

I joined this group a while back but haven't been really active in the forums. I am so glad to hear that this is a policy. I belong to a professional human resources society that sponsors an on-line forum. They don't have that rule and it has gotten so that all that ever happened on that board was fights about differing opinions on world events and moral issues. I simply quit trying to obtain info from there because legitimate questions were just bumped off the page before anyone had a chance to answer because of all the "junk mail."

Oregon City, OR(Zone 8b)

Gardening, and gardening chat...........
are my escape from the frustrations of the daily news, celebrity nonsense, political B.S., friend/family gossip....etc. Gardening, the love of plants, is a great escape from all of that.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way!

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

No you're not. I feel the same way. I'm on several other forums -- professional and personal -- and one thing I appreciate on this forum is its civility and the attention it pays to gardening. I don't like other subjects, like politics, but also like family happenings, yada yada. I wish it would stick to gardening.

SC, MT(Zone 5a)

Yeppers! No doubt about it! No need for discussin' pollyticks, religon, and stuff like thet here.

We got enuff going on that's ALL good..no bad....'ceptin' for weeds, of course, or the occasional fish eatin' critter that frequents some of our ponds, or the scrubby 'bug' that bites our beluvd plants, or the fungus that attacks...or the horrors of black spot...or the.....

Come to think of it.....we've got enuff goin' on around here without addin' to the pot....let's jus' take care of the home stuff.....and leave the rest to other places outside our DG,

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol BingsBell...here here! I reckon Dave's is becomin' a haven for folks just tryin' to do a wee bit of escape from that crazy ole world outside the front door and waaay beyond our beeyootiful ;) gardens. Thank goodness...and thank you Dave for creatin' this wonderful place. (And thank Texas for creatin' Dave, lol) :D
Melanie

SC, MT(Zone 5a)

Melanie...I knowed Texas was BIG and hurd of miracles happenin' there (from Texans 'course) but I never hurd Texas was creatin' human bee'ns ....Mebby Dave's folks would take offenze that they didnt have anytheng to do with Dave's bein' here. 'Spose we'd better let them take a littl' credit fer that? ;^)
