REMEMBER: NO DISCUSSION OF CURRENT EVENTS

Brooksville, ME(Zone 5a)

What a relief. You are so right. Thanks for making this a fun place

Hammonton, NJ(Zone 6b)

WITH MY RIGHT HAND HELD HIGH and THE OTHER ON MY COMPUTER,
I PLEGDE !!!!! Current events are too depressing and it is a relief to occupy the mind with other interests!

As for praying for world conditions....that can be done on your own time, in private.

Thank You for the ruling, Dave.

I thought it might be OK to post about the terrible Tsunamis in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and other countries and express concerns and ways to help. But then, here we go again. Some folks could be upset about the way our government is handling relief efforts or the amount of monies being sent and then we'd have arguments about that. So I guess banning ALL current events is the best way to handle this, after all.
I did receive Dave's post on my watch list.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Hey guys & gals. We're driving to Fla for our vacation March 13-20, 2005. Any helpful hints on plant-collecting (whether at nurseries or in the wild, would be greatly appreciated). How's "that" for news????

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Be careful to not buy plants that will die in your area such as oleanders or camillias which may be blooming when you get there. Of course, if you have a large heated greenhouse.....

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

We do have a large heated greenhouse, so the sky;s the limit!!!!(well, nothing over 7 feet tall. LOL)

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

I also want to bring home some Mosquito fish & green tree frogs. Ohhh hurry up March 12.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Hee Hee .. Sounds like a 'plan' to me, Buttoneer .. and some mitey dandy 'news' too ...

Hope you guys have loads of fun .. !!

Also, pick up some tips on the Seed Snatchin' and Dumpster Divin' Divas thread too, fer
any of yer 'collecting' expeditions .... http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/463059/

gone2seed gave me a morning glory tree at the last GA RU. It was too cool at my house to get it to bloom but I potted it and put in a huge wide windowsill in a county-owned mansion and it took off. The blooms were awesome and it's going to bloom some more now.

Valley Village, CA

Thank you Dave, I knew politics were off limits as well as religion. I didn't even think about the rest being off limits. I certainly can see where you are coming from, thank you for protecting the list before anything happens. The reminder doesn't hurt any of us.
Dave watch for a package, I am just waiting for the weather to break here, it rainy and very cold for me. About 40F and don't any of the rest of you laugh, that's cold for me.

Thanks Dave,

I look forward to and enjoy reading the DG forums daily. It is so nice to come here and not have to think about all of the bad things that are going on in the world around us. This is a refreshing place for me to come and relax and learn new things about gardening. And thank you Dave for keeping it this way.

Much Appreciated, Dave. Thank you! Anymore....I don't even like watching the news on TV .....but I still keep looking with horrified fascination! Guess it's something like the "bird and reptile" syndrom. Dave's Garden is a welcome haven in the midst of chaos and mayhem !

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Dave, thank you for the pure JOY I feel when I enter the Garden and close the gate behind me. I feel free to wander (lurk) and just enjoy with no thoughts of the "outside world".

Happy Gardening! =)

I like this place better and better every day.

Tremont, IL(Zone 5b)

I'm glad this showed up. I didn't know that we weren't to discuss such things. Guess I'd better reread the news. Must have something to do with getting old & feeble minded!! :)

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Oops. I just posted in a thread started about the tsunami before I read this thread. Sorry, Dave. I'll go edit it out now.
Terrie

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

What tsunami?

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Ulrich, it is a huge destructive wave (especially one caused by an earthquake).

JesseK

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Buttoneer, can't you stay til April 2 and come to the roundup on the north Florida/Alabama line?

Cape Cod, MA(Zone 7a)

Dave,
I have strong feelings about a lot of issues, and agree this is not a forum for any of that. I admire you for your policy and I think it keeps us focused on what we have in common, not our differences. this is what is so great about DG..
Cindy

Oro Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

I don't come here often to read what's posted here. I'm glad I did today. I never knew this policy existed. (I probably should have, but I didn't) Dave or Terry, there may be hundreds, thousands even, that probably don't know about this policy.

Should a topic entry/thread be posted on every forum on this website to inform/remind others that don't read THIS particular forum? Maybe once or twice a year? (Just a suggestion to help keep things nipped in the bud, and less work for you guys..........maybe.)
Margie

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Maybe this thread or a new one could just be made watched for everyone every so often as a reminder?

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

oky doky

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

So how am I supposed to answer when the question arises, "Why do you move every 3 years?" Or "Why do you list so many zip codes in PlantFiles?"

I am not allowed to mention what my husband does for a living? Other people can talk about what they do or what their spouses do.

What about people who plant "Victory Gardens"? Is that off-limits, too?

I understand and support the stance DG has taken. I almost even agree with it. :) I just want to make sure I don't say something I shouldn't. I'm very good at doing that and I want to eliminate as many future instances as possible. :)

~Carla

I know it's an inconvenience for you, Carla. If everyone could be responsible, and keep their hateful intolerance of [insert subject here] and what some folks stand for to themselves, we wouldn't have to enforce these policies. :( I really don't know of any better solution.

BTW - when people talk about their family members in Iraq, or similar type (personal) things, we let them remain on the site. We only really enforce on issues that denegrate into nastiness.

Hiya Carla -

I also wondered about some of those "gray" areas and do appreciate the position DG has taken. I come here to "garden" and play away from the dark side of life. What about the pen-pals for the military threads? I have nothing against them and applaud the intent of these activities, but I just am wondering how this fits in with the site policies. Not a big deal for me, if I run across a thread that becomes heated, I just move on.....just wondering what the parameters or is that perimeters of unacceptable topics are.

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Great policy Dave....keep up the good work.

Thanks Dave, I was typing while you were responding. The "degenerating into nastiness" is a great policy limit.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

When I saw this thread the other day, I just assumed it was a new one, and I had read several posts before I realized Magpye had just bumped it up to give as all a reminder. As far as I can see, Dave hasn't posted to this thread until today, since he started it in 2003. I think he keeps an eye on things and doesn't step in unless it's absolutely necessary, and that's part of what makes him such a good webmaster.

As far as I can see, the problem with making hard and fast rules about these things is that there are so many special circumstances and so many gray areas. It is a shame to feel you can't boast a bit about your loved ones who serve their country or express concern for the victims of disaster.

At the time Dave created this thread, we had some real feuds going on here, and I'll bet he was getting pretty sick of dealing with it. Dave knows as well as anyone that caps are shouting, and I think that was his intention... just like we were a bunch of unruly children that wouldn't listen... which we were. He meant for us all to say 'Uh Oh!' when we saw the subject line.

I'd be happy if we could just have a notice to the effect that we are not allowed to be judgemental, rude, mean-spirited, self-righteous, bigoted, or overly impressed with ourselves and our beliefs. I wish we had a 'courtesy check' on our toolbars, but at least we should all re-read our comments before we post. Dave gave us a preview option, and it has saved my bacon several times.

Crossville, TN

Wheez....me too!! LOL Foot in mouth disease is rampant sometimes...Jo

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

How true, Jo! I'm getting pretty old and fat, so it takes me longer to get my foot into my mouth, but sometimes I manage, unfortunately!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

And have you noticed how it takes so much longer to get a foot back out of your mouth than it did get get it in there? I mean, sometimes you're hopping around for days with people saying, "oh, look, there she goes...She really put her foot in her mouth that time, didn't she?!" I hate it when that happens! LOL

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Was that you hopping around the Garden on one foot the other day? I thought the whooping cranes had made an early migration!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

It was. Really messed up the CSI to only see right footprints, too.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Good move to insert the left foot so that the right foot was available for hopping about... you must do this often.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I think you're supposed to alternate feet so your dominant foot isn't unnecessarily strained and you increase your ambidexterity ;o)

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Ambipederity?
