Ponder Caretaker??
I guess you can say I am a pond caretaker because I am a CNA and am responsible for two elderly people. I am responsible for their heath and happiness. I showed them a picture of my daughters pond and right away they wanted to get one installed. I called my DH and he went and purchased a pond kit form Wal Mart. He came over and started digging the hole for it. Where they wanted the pond was roots the size of your arm so had to find another place to put it where they could get up close to the pond. Started digging again and ran across water pipes that was for the no longer working sprinkler system. So we cut the pipes and then ran across the telephone wire to the shed and an electric wire to the shed. Now you will enjoy this because my DH is no electrician but with the help of the male client who is almost blind walked my hubby through putting the wire back together. So then we were able to finish digging the hole and filling with water. Clients wanted fish in right away but after telephoning the pet shop was told needed to put a dechlorated in the water and had to wait 48 hours before putting any fish in the pond. So they was able to enjoy just the fountain for the 48 hours. Then we put a large Pleco that had outgrown the inside aquarium into the pond. Then we purchased 8 feeder goldfish and one Large Koi. The next day lost 2 feeder goldfish and the day after that 4 more feeder Goldfish. Koi doing fine and so is Pleco. Bought 2 snails for the pond and some floating plants. They wanted more fish so bought 2 more Chocolate Fantail Golfish.
Then the rains started. Pond almost overflowed so had to scoop out in just one day 30 gallons of fish, until I realized all I had to do is turn the little frog fountain out of the pool and let it drain out that way. DAH!
Well so far so good. The fountain had to be put about 6 inches above ground so that my Clients would not accidentally back into the pond. Put some stones around the pond. Adding a pic so you can see what it looks like. It is a very small pond but they are enjoying it. Ruby is almost deaf but cant hear the fountain but can see it. Allen is almost blind but enjoys listening to the sound of the fountain. Since this photo was taken I have put a smaller fountain in so not to attack animals. Also put the gater and the snake hoping that will scare them away.
Will be asking for advice on this as we go along. Will try and get a pic of my clients sitting by the pond and send it on to. Of course I am the one that has to take care of the pond but enjoy doing it to see the happiness on their faces. It has give them something to look forward to everyday. Have given her the responsibility of feeding the fish which she enjoys very much. Hope you enjoy hearing this little story and knowing that we might grow old but we still can have some happiness in our old age.
Sami
How many ponders are out there????????? List your names.
LOL Sami! What a great story! I know they must think you and your DH are the greatest to do this for them and they will get a lot of enjoyment from it.
Zanymuse They do think that about us in as a matter of fact they would like for us to move in with them. But Hubby said no cant do that. We do love doing things for them.
Sami
What a lovely thing to do Sami. The pond is lovely and so are you and your DH. God bless you both.
I made a little berm for the liner to go over so ground water couldn't run in. Gathered all the rocks from our creek. It took me a month to get them all and put in place. My back still hurts!! :o( The pond is three feet deep. It has a ledge along the edge that is about ten inches deep. Might of been a mistake. The coons have visited a couple of times but haven't done any damage. Linda
Just going into our third year with our pond. Came with the house!!! About 1800 gallons, cement, part above and part below ground. Lots of goldfish and other smaller fish. Hubby has just finished a new pump/filter/fountain head set up, with spitter. Took this picture yesterday morning. Caught the sun just right and it looks great!!
Enjoy!
Glenda
ggd, it looks great! What a great feature to have already established when you got your place!
Another check in from Minnesota.
The 300 gal. horse trough I have dragged around for a few years finally this past month has been filled with water, various plants, a few fish, and lilies, rushes, snails, etc. due to a neighbour with several huge oldtime ponds. Plants from my garden and lava rock conceal the outside. Patience paid off wonderfully. I didn't have to buy anything (except for the year I bought the trough, determined to have a pond). And I guess I am finally a "ponder".
A fairly new ponder from Minnesota.
Raises Hand!
Me too!! I have 2 proper ponds, 1 large cattle water trough, 5 rubber maid containers, 1 old country bathtub,
2 square metal containers....anything that will hold another
water plant. I started water gardening 8 years ago-got
my Dad hooked as well-between us we have managed to collect
alot of different hardys. Last year I grew my first tropical-Blue Beauty (and overwintered it) and this year
is my first for a Lotus!
Me too have two new ponds, yes

wow I sure love to see all of ya here! Welcome to DG all you newbies.
I'm a bit late in here!!
Not sure if I count anyway as I'm only just digging mine
Wonderful thread, thanks for starting it azsteve :)
digging or there for 30 years or more you are still a ponder. Even if it is just a pot with plants and maybe a fish in it I still consider it a pond because you have an interest in pond plants or fish or both. Jump right in and introduce yourselves.
A fairly new ponder here, my first pond was a 90 gal. preform from WalMart. My next venture is going to be a somewhat larger hand-dug in the back yard. The way I look at it, the more ponds I have, the less grass I need to cut! But that's not the only reason, I became addicted after my first pond! If I had the property (land), I would have a lake dug!
Just dug my second pond, this one is approx. 500 gallons. I am on the search for some FREE river rock or other type of rock to use as a surround! It's kind of hard to come by FREE rock here in the city. If anyone in central Ohio knows of a good place to go rock picking, or if anyone knows of a place to get CHEAP rock, please let me know. Thanks.
Dave

....I'm a waterbug....(Ü)
New to DG and just looked through this long list of ponders - impressive! I guess I'm in good company. We've had our pond about 4 years. Every year it looks different, depending on what survives the winter and what invaders (good and bad) creep in. About a dozen koi live there providing a moving tapestry of color. I'll have to figure out how to send a pic.
Here, here
I can't count! How many are you so far?
Won't you show us your ponds here?

hi everybody, i'm a rather newbie to DG and just discovered the ponders. count me in !!! not big (only 6x8) BUT I LOVE IT !!!!
From the great Northwest Oregon about fifty miles inland and only ten miles from the mighty Columbia River. Have three ponds, 70 gals., 500 gals. and 750 gals. Hope to build a big one next summer at about 5000 gallons or more.
I have an indoor pond in my sun room. Does that count?
broozersnooze, it counts but it will count even more if ya post a picture for us to ogle and drool over ;~)
I'm here is Southeast Louisiana. 3 ponds and 6 water containers. Its an addiction.
Betty
Very nice Betty, thanks for the photos :)
Very nice Betty, Now a picture of the tortoise to go along with the ponds. BTW How do they do in the winter? I mean does the cold bother them? This is a very interesting hobby.
Zanymuse, I'll post a pix when I get my digital camera working again. I keep getting edit that my card is full. Camera store said it was the card. Bought a new one with lots of memory. Worked fine for a while, now it's doing the same thing. Makes me wonder if I'm doing something to make it mess up.
Some of the pix y'all posted are SO beautiful! Especially the big ponds. Makes me jealous.

broozersnooze, sorry to hear about your camera not working :~( Hope ya get it figured out. Have you gone over to the camera forum and posted about it there? GW and a couple of others may be able to come up with a solution.
As for being jealous of the big ponds...I get a wee bit envious when they post pics too but then I remember that I can muck the bottom of mine out by hand without having to get into it and reach the submersible pump by just reaching in. So envy asside...small is better for this old gal! :~)
Well I am just a beginner. We moved my garden from one side of the yard to another this year and cleaned out the dirt from an old brick/cement pond. We are still trying to decide what to do so just have water in it with some plants around it. We don't like our plants and our bird bath around it so we are going to start over again. We are trying to get ideas on what to do.
Post a picture olds88lady and maybe we can all help you get ideas of what you might do.
