Hi,
I am a ponder, too. I have 2 preforms and have just been given a round preform barrel (30 gal) This has been a very good year for the ponds. Goldfish and frogs and snails are all thriving. I tried some new marginals this year with good success. In the future, I would like to install a larger, deeper pond for Koi and try my hand at being a bogger. It is so relaxing to be able to go out to the pond area and watch my pond kids. Such a treat!
How many ponders are out there????????? List your names.
My posting name is Jessamine and I'm a pond addict, too. Started with an MG project several years ago to make a water feature noisy enough to distract from the noise of the air conditioner. It worked.
Add me to your ponder count. I have been reluctant to visit this site because if anyone asks for photos of my pond, I will be embarrassed by my green water, lol. It's a beautiful pond, but we definitely have water problems. I know my reluctance is goofy, because this is where I should turn for help. Now that I'm here, I will cruise around the threads and search for some solutions.
First pond this year but now I am addicted and getting ready to make it bigger..Nothing can be so rewarding.
Count me amongst the congregation !!! Have been ill and my fish pond has been terribly neglected.....but with DH's efforts it is being brought back to life again. Just ordered some netting and fish food from LIlypons Water Gardens (Maryland).
I have a pond!

Welcome to Dave's!
Always Great to Have Another Ponder!
What Area are You From?
I'm from southern Ohio, the eastern end of the corn belt. Land o' soybeans and corn, a few feedlots, a few more cattle farms, a few fewer dairy farms, and a growing number of produce and organic farmers, which is encouraging. Our topsoil, where it is not paved over, is 8 to 12 inches deep on average, relatively heavy clay content but veeeery good for feed crops if amended. I LOVE your screen name, ZZtopsoil! But what is OSU, if not Ohio State University? :)
Thanks RockCity for the Bio.
You Sound Like You Live in Our Area.
As More and More Developement Takes Place Here...
There is Less and Less Farming and Open Space Land.
Ohio State...What's That...?
This is the Real OSU!
Oregon State University!... :)
Ohio State's mascot is literally a nut -- the Buckeyes. Can you top that?
And in This Corner............
ZZ and Rocky....You two sound like you are in the playoffs......keep it up....it is good reading. LOL
Belle
Gee... I don't ever recall Orgeon State being in the playoffs. The Bucks, however... hmmm, oh, yes, that's right -- National Champions last year, weren't they? :)
But I digress. Back to ponds.
ZZ...I'm north of you in Battle Ground, WA, and have two ponds, one about 1/3 acre, the other a bit smaller, both 7-10' deep at the deepest point. They are surrounded by gumbo (which came out of the wetlands to create the ponds), so I am having a challenge figuring out what will grow best in that. I just planted the surrounding 2 acres with Fleur de Lawn, an ecoturf created by somebody at OSU in conjunction with some folks at Hobbs and Hopkins in Portland. It is a combination of a dwarf perenniel rye, yarrow, strawberry clover and english daisies. Allegedly once established, it needs no water or fertilization because it self-fertilizes. My hope is that it will slowly transform the soil - especially in combination with compost tea (SoilSoup). Any thoughts for good trees/shrubs in this situation?
Thanks - Bill
I have been around garden ponds for about twenty years, both as an owner and pond installer/maintenance provider for other people.

Welcome Oconus to our pond group. We can use your expert advice on this forum, from time to time we have a question . Again welcome and have fun. Ted
Two ponds and several smaller waterfalls in central CA
I can't get over how long this tread has been going finally when from the top since I have missed a lot since last viewed...I finally brought in my fish to their new home for the winter and hope by next spring the pond will be deep enough to winterize them out side and they truly don't like being restricted to a tank but they do love to come up and eat out of your hand..
I just love seeing all the ponds here it gives me great ideas to do with mine.
Love the site. Hubby gave me $1000 to start a water garden and I have been looking for information and pictures. Not sure what I want but I think a 3 tier water fall with 2 ponds and a stream in between. Figure $3000-4000. Am I in the ball park with this? Does anyone have pictures or recommendations I could look at.? Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you Ted, I'll be glad to share what little bits of wisdom I have learnt through the years, from my mistakes and successes. I also want to read and learn more from other pond owner's experiences.
Gajade, you may be better off posting your question on a new thread, where it is more likely to be seen. I think you will have more responses that way.
Oconus.
We're in the process of expanding our pond. We had a 100 gal. preformed pond with no filtration system and are in the process of making a 400-500 gal. pond with skimmer, biofilter & waterfall feature. We have two fancy goldfish, 1 comet & 2 baby fish. The comet & fc. goldfish are the parents but so far they look like the babies will be comets. We have a resident adult bullfrog which we've had for two years and a baby frog that appreared this summer. Once we're done, we hope to have more waterlilies, lotus, & Koi.

me to, new first year... :)
What a beautiful pond, makes my little pond look sad..
Hi everyone - old ponder, new member! This thread amazes me, not only the fact that it's been going on since 2002, but the original poster is a very close firend of mine. When he posted, we hadn't met, and now, thanks to a pond, we're like family!
My biggest pond is 2150 gal, and I have several smaller ponds and container gardens. This winter's plans (luckily I can dig here year 'round) include a new pond equal to or bigger than my biggest pond, and turning one of my front foundation beds into a water garden, with waterfall, stream, and small pond. From experience, I can definitely say that ponding is addictive!

New to DG and new pond this year. I love both! :)
If we are still counting I'm here to

Hi I'm a new member to DG. We moved to Fredericksburg, Tx in l990 and that's when I started my gardening adventure. My brother gave us a fiberglass pond liner over a year ago. We finally got in the ground about a month ago. I can't wait to stock it with plants.

Count me too! I started w/a Home Depot plastic pond and 4 gold fish 4 years ago; now I have a 5000 gallon pond w/streambed and waterfall and 15 koi. I enjoy my morning coffee watching hummingbirds bathing in the waterfall. Of course now, w/this rain, everything is over the banks! We've already had double our normal rain fall for the year.

I've had a pond for several years and help out others locally when I can be of help. I've taught environmental water chemistry, among other things, for 30+ years so please feel free to question away.
I'm new here, but I am on my third pond since 1995, and it isn't quite finished yet. Meaning no plants in or around it. I do have 53 or more koi and a terrific waterfall. I am looking forward to spring and being able to put waterlilies (hardy) into the pond here in the bluegrass of Kentucky. I am planning on doing rock garden plants in and around the pond as well; what a perfect place for that.
Arabella
I love your waterfall. It looks like it was put there by Mother Nature. You sure did a wonderful job.
Very Beautiful water gardens -- all of you , thats really inspiring, hopefully one of these days I'll have one too. Arabella , thats a real impressive waterfall --- you should be in business, LOL!
You the same AZsteve on IWGS? Patti Rose here
I have a 1400 gallon pond--new this new --6 butterfly koi and 5 gold fish--and lots of plants--its a learning experience for me --I really enjoy listening to the waterfall--so add me to the pond list--Cheryl
I have had my pond in Tiverton Rhode Island for 7 years.
