froto, your pond is beautiful with or without the snow.

Hi Busybee,

The tortoises can't swim. They sink like a rock lol. They are kept away from the ponds. Some of them hibernate. The ones that don't have heated dog houses for the winter.

They look so comfortable in there. Thanks for the picture. I never realised they needed a heated place in the winter.

Everyone! Your pix are so inspiring! Jen

Hello there Ponders. Please add my name to the list. I have 2 of them.

Piedmont, MO(Zone 6a)

I have a pond, too. Big enough for 2 goldfish and about 12 frogs...too shady for water lilies. Hand dug, lined with concrete reinforced with chicken wire. Put it in 11 years ago and still have no problems with it. Here is a view from inside the house:

I have a watergarden which includes two very small ponds, a stream and a medium size pond.

With so many new members who have ponds it is going to really be fun watching this thread for ideas! So to all you new folks I offer this ....WELCOME TO DG!

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

I just caught this thread. I have 2 ponds, a small preformed and a smaller still water. The stillwater houses guppies to eat the mosquito larvae and to grow water cabbage. The preformed has 2 goldfish a whole bunch of guppies that refuse to be a meal to anyone, and a couple of tree frogs. Went up to Lake Okeechobee yesterday, plucked some more water cabbage and another floating plant from the waters. Took 'em home and put 'em in the pond. They were very well rooted.

Here's a shot of my simple little preformed. I like gardening in the soil too, and since our yard is not that big, a small water feature is the best way to go. Having it close to the house discourages the herons from coming in to eat my fish.

Traci S checking in!!!!!!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I will be a ponder tomorrow. Soon as Lowes or Home Depot open. The pics are relaxing to look at so I've got to get the real thing.

hiram, GA(Zone 7b)

I'm a new ponder, check out the stock tank that my DH made me for Christmas. Guess he figured that I needed to know what was in it, so he already put one goldfish on the outside so everyone would know. This is a 6' long x 2' wide tank, 36" deep. Will it be alright?

Thauma, where's the picture of the rest of the pond? I want to se what you've done with it. We also have the plastic black preform, 1/2 above the ground. Geeze I'm so envious of that camera. Wonderful picture.

Thanks. More photos coming soon.
I'm sorry however, to disappoint you regarding the camera.
It is a 3-year old SONY's "bottom of the line" camera, Model FD-73 that uses floppy disk for storage.

So, what gives?

A fantastic 10X zoom lens. The camera had since been
discontinued by SONY. The good news is that all the famous brands are adding 10X zoom feature to their high-end digital cameras.

Las Vegas , NV(Zone 8a)

Count me in! I put in a small pond with a little stream and waterfall last summer along the side of my house which I view from my dining room and small patio. I didn't realize then that this is a lifelong addiction--my hubby thought we were done with this project. It's nice to know that I'm not alone in my pond addiction!

Granbury, TX(Zone 7b)

1: preformed 300 gal in front yard
2: larger 5000 gal liner pond with waterfall in the backyard

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Just dreaming at this point but it is the first project on the list for this spring (that would be May here folks) when the snow melts and the ground is soft for digging. I know it will be fun and frustrating and fun and trouble - I am a spatially challenged and too much in a hurry type of builder. Will probably here my dear departed dad over my shoulder saying 'there's never enough time to do it right but there's always time to do it over'. Now while the snow is deep and the temps are too; -30 today I have your pictures to look at for inspiration.

Chillicothe, IL(Zone 5a)

Checking in here with 1 shade and 1 sun pond! Need a larger one now though....hehe

Wilton, CA(Zone 9b)

ours is 5000 gallons. We went to a local koi club auction, and we were able to stock the pond w/great koi up to 37" for less than a 1/4 of the price. Check w/your local club and see if they have auctions.
My fish and I have morning coffee together, the pond has been my favorite never ending project.

South Wales,, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

New to DG's, but not to Water Gardening - I've been a Water Gardener for about 8 years to date. My present 'Pond' is approximately 1656 gals - 13' * 8' * 2' 6 deep - created May 2002 having 'moved' Home. With Shubunkins, Sarasa Comets and Golden Orf Pond Fish varieties. So please Count me in...

Flower Mound, TX(Zone 7b)

I have a natural pond that I want to plant bog and water garden plants at the edge...does that count as being a "ponder"? We have lots of wildlife that visit, and if I had more space I would build a water feature - but I'm content with my natural pond for now. I know with a natural pond you have to be careful planting invasive plants. I would like to try Lotus and water lilies along with many other plants...

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Count me in too.:>)
I have 2 preformed ponds:
one our garden room about 500gals with the waterfall and one 250gal in the back.
The garden room has only fancy goldfish in it. It stays so clean because it is basically indoors.I love it!
I have several small tub ponds for keeping my water plants in.

Bee Spring, KY(Zone 6a)

Hand's up for me.......
Living here in KY, we have two very large farm ponds, one is almost and acre with the island in the middle. The island is 15x20 with a corkscrew willow, and two crimson red maples. This pond is full of catfish. The other large pond is for the animals. In the yard I have two goldfish ponds, one under a redbud tree, the other infront of my bay window, both with water plants that make it all winter. The hubby and I love the pond thing.

League City, TX(Zone 9a)

New to DG and new to ponding. Set up my pond in late Dec. and it is doing well. (The fish are still alive!) It's only 125 gal. but I'm happy with it.

Flower Mound, TX(Zone 7b)

Here is our pond. My daughter took this photo so it is black and white. We have Blue Heron, Ducks, Geese, Beavers and all kinds of wildlife. I'm not too happy with the Beaver - they chew up all my woody pond side plants....I had a swamp rose last year and it is a little nub now...

Thumbnail by shearpamela
The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey shearpamela...that looks more like a lake....lol.
It's huge or should we say TEXAS size pond.
Nice pic.
Lottie

Flower Mound, TX(Zone 7b)

It is big, but I'm not sure about lake-sized :) I guess I'm not sure what makes a pond a pond or a lake...but it is big! I think I might have to frame this photo....I just found it on my daughter's website of photos.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

I think it would make a beautiful pic framed.
My little pond doesn't even compare...now that's what I call a real pond.:>)
