Shoe - the Netherlands is one country. Holland is actually North and South Holland, two provinces of ten -now I think there is more because of more reclaimed land from the IJsselmeer and Markermeer. When we were kids it was the Zuider Zee but that is no longer there because of the dam - the zee (sea) is now a fresh water lake (meer). Because the majority of the people live in N. and S. Holland, the whole country is called Holland but it is not correct. The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg (sp?) are the Low Countries. My kids learned to remember them by Be-Ne-Lux.
Bleek - Back atcha! Interesting country there, isn't it? Hoping to get back to see cousins soon. Truste!
How did you pick your DG name? Part 3
Shoe it's much worse than that. Penn. Dutch are not dutch but German. Dutch is offensive to Netherlanders because they are not Deutche, German. We Never had a problem with people whose basic Credo is work hard and be nice to everyone you meet. Never heard of militant Amish. Guess Buddists are also always friends. I don't care where you get the answer. Not a John Lennon fan but Peace is the answer.
Thanks kooger. Guess I better brush up on Holland/Netherlands, etc.
Bernie, hhehehe, nope, that story has no bearing on the Horseshoe name. (I declare, I STILL think that name post is here somewhere!) (Will try to do another search or, heaven forbid, repost it.)
Mine is pretty simple though. Just a short, easy to call "Dinu" for Dinakar. (The Sanskrit meaning of my name: The Sun - one who gives light to the world.) This is how people close to me, in my family, friends circles have called me ever since I was a child. We have a tradition where the wife does not call her husband by his name. Calling his name is considered as disrespectful. So, she normally calls out "Reeee"! When I visited DG for the first time and thought of registering, and also after seeing those "screen names", "Dinu" was the first name that came to mind and that stuck. When friends here on DG address me as Dinu, that gives me a homely feeling!
barbi is simply short for (my given name) Barbara..
Kooger....we go back 2 or 3 times a year. I do not miss the Dutch weather at all, only the HARING and the BEER and oeps, I almost forgot.......the SMOKED EEL.
My dad goes nuts on the haring - makes me gag!! When they were kids they'd grab a smoked eel for lunch on the go and back out to work!! Eeeeeeewwwww!! Can't afford to go back that often - only been once! I'm seeing green(envy) here! lol
I live in Tombstone, AZ and I just figured that anyone that chooses to live in such a desolate area with as much history that this town has should proably make the best of a very poor gardening area. So I am here to stay and make the best of our rocky, no soil, caliche ground, yard. I keep bringing in soil from other areas and keep adding mulch and potting soil to make it better. I think its beging to show great signs of improvment.
Any way I'm Tombstonejan I am I am.
Pretty dumb, Huh?
Is Tombstone where the famous Lester Moore is buried?
Yep,
Here lies Lester Moore
Shot three times with a forty four
No less no more
We live just below the Boothill Cemetary.
It's amazing how many folks come to veiw the cemetary. I am always being asked if we see ghosts wandering around at night. I haven't seen any yet but alot of unexplained things happen aroun here. I guess it could be ghosts. Who knows. I just hope they're friendly. Heheh
Yep, you could only hope Jan....hehehe

My husband calls me his weasel. I am small person (or creature as he says) and I was being silly and kind of sneaky some years back and he called me a weasel - it stuck. When creating an nick name elsewhere on the net a while back, that was taken so I ended up with a variation that includes my first intitial.
I didn't think too hard on mine. My first name is Nancy,
my last name starts with M and I live in Maryland. Thus,
NM in MD. I use this name on just about any other site
I visit. Pretty low on the imagination barometer.....
Giorio is a mispelling of my first name, over the years I've gotten used to see my name misspelled in every way, however this one sounded good, I mean that if you say it aloud and with a rolling R it sound..exotic? Russian?
(can we have an exotic Russian?).
Oh I dont know, it just sounded good so what the heck...
Giorrrrio... I was thinking maybe an exotic Italian. :)
Well.... that would be Giorgio...and that's me ;)
I used to work in Flight-Tracking aircraft, and the pilots with whom I spoke on the radio nicknamed me 'Sweet Pea' which I also used for my Web site.
'Sweet Pea' (and every variation thereof) was already taken, so I tried 'LouisianaSweetPea' ('cause I live in Louisiana).
Not being familiar with posting on forums, I didn't know what a pain it would be to type all those letters. If I HAD known, I would have shortened it to LSP!
My real name is Jean, named after my Mom. When I was a kid, my mother would call me by my first AND middle names, but only when she was REALLY angry...."Jean Carlyle!!!" Whoops! I KNEW I was in trouble then! :))
I have really enjoyed this thread!! Hope it keeps on and on!!!
It is so fun and interesting!!
Stumble across this today, what a great idea. My first name alone was already taken . So I put where I was born and raised with it. My old man is still having fits over my doing it, as well as my email address, and my license plate. To long of a story to go into, lets just say I have a thing about my name. My first name is Kitty, not a nickname. My (married) last name is extremely unique and rare. If you have my (married) last name I guarantee we are related. Thus came txkitty, I was not ready to die, and knew if I put both first & last together as I did on my email, it could well happen. Ha Ha
Alright txkitty, did you really think you'd get away with only telling part of the story-LOL!! You can't keep us in suspense-fessup!!! BTW, I think txkitty is very cute!
I need to remember my own name some days. So my name reflects my passion, Gardening, and my own name, Martha. Hence, Gardenmart.
Oh, and NotMartha, On a certain lady's website, I am Othermartha, which is how she is always referred to around here. I am jealous of her peonies and her depression glass collection. If she has to sell one or the other to pay court costs, I will be first in line at the auction.
oh my... just found this thread. Should I post? Do you really want to know?
I'll give you some hints. I don't have a chihuahua, I'm not from Mexico, I don't kill small animals of any kind.
Hmmmm...You like Big Dawg shirts, maybe? Or you're a fiend for Taco Bell?
Are you small but tough?
Mine is kinda obvious, as it's my name. But my mama named me Judith so she could nickname me "Judy." Some of you may remember the radio program "A Date with Judy?" She thought it was so cute. Then of course, along came "Punch & Judy," which made it worse!
Her other option was "Nancy," which is a fine name, but I don't feel like a "Nancy." I didn't feel like a "Judy" either.
I lived with it until high school, where there were 5 or 6 "Judys," including my best friend, in my class alone. I decided to change to "Judith," which I thought sounded more grownup.
Since then, it has been a constant battle. I mean, hey, I'm a senior citizen now, and a professional. I should have a more mature name than "Judy," don't you think?
I've pretty much been able to switch to Judith, so it really annoys me now, actually for some years, when someone I don't even know, especially a telephone salesperson, starts the conversation by calling me "Judy." I mean, I don't even know you, and certainly never gave you permission to call me even Judith, let alone Judy. You're already gonna lose this sale!
So I usually do something I rarely do. I respond that, "This is Dr. Inman." That generally leaves them babbling. I mean I don't toss it around a lot, but it is fun to use then, or when trying to get through to a client's MD's, or billing staff. Get put right through! Well, heck, they don't know I'm not a MD.
And I worked just as hard for my Ph.D as they did for their MD, maybe even harder. Anyway, I guess that's why I use my real name. I like it OK, and hate it when it gets shortened to a nickname. Everybody has buttons that can be pushed. I guess that is one of mine!
Anyhow, you can call me whatever you like, except "Judy." (or maybe "punkinhead.")
I work with senior citizens, and don't call them by their first name unless they ask me to.
Judith, with "hangups" LOL
Dr. Judith Inman:
You have surmised correctly.
I am just over 5', and failry un-intimidateable. I talk too much (chihuahuas are yappy too) and although I don't bounce, I attack things energetically. Well, some things. My ears don't stick up or out though and I never wag my tail, so the parallel breaks down a little there.
Greetings from another "newbie". I've enjoyed reading all the names/origins, what a creative gang assembled here!! My DG name comes from the fact that I have five siamese cats (meezers!) and before you even ask, yes, I am obviously crazy. In my defense, we didn't get them all at once, and some of them (well, two) are my hubby's fault because he's a pushover for kittens. He's also a valuable gardening asset, as in "Honey, could we move that hosta over here?" and "There's five bags of manure in the trunk". Looking forward to hearing from all these wonderful gardeners, and have already gotten some valuable advice from you all. (Can you say You all if you're from Wisconsin?)
Meezers, what lovely, sleek kitties! Welcome to Dave's Garden! In addition to gardeners, there are lots of 'pet-people' here too. I think you are going to like it here.
Jean
LSP My whole family did that to me too, if you heard your first and middle name you were in trouble, now if you were standing there and someone called you by someone elses name you were only in trouble if they got your name right the second time, if they kept going down the list of cousins names that werent you they would get exasperated and say aw forget it, go play.
Ha! Draven, did your mom have to go down a list of names until she got it right also? My mom did -- with four kids, she was always calling us by someone else's name :))
I did the same thing with our 4 children. Our youngest when she was a teen, would get upset, if we were our in public.
Thank you much, KillerChihuahua, for your kind formal address!
Actually, although I'm older than dirt, it still gives me chill bumps when someone calls me Dr. It's not a pride thing. It's just a reminder that, after all those years working toward it, I finally got there!
No more classes, practicums, field work, dissertation, internship, residency, licensure exams, licensure approval!
One of my employees got there today (Dr.)! Lord, I know he and his fiancee, another of my employees, are out celebrating tonight. Her turn is coming soon! And I've got another one coming along nicely as well. Looks like I'm going to have to find two new replacement interns/residents to replace the two moving on up and out.
I'm still waiting for the state to assign me a special medicare provider number. They've already approved me as a provider.
I've been making payroll for 3 years, without any income from it. But my precious employees have been working hard, and we have lots of clients I can bill for as soon as they send me the magic number! Course, my wonderful DH is still trying to get the electronic billing system set up properly.
The Lord has certainly taught me a lot about patience, and provided for our needs. So we don't worry about it. Things will work out according to his plan. I know, cause we asked him to!
As for your DG name, and description of yourself, you go girl! That's what it takes to get where you want to be in life. Persistence, and assertiveness. Keep your focus on your goals. You'll get there!
And Meezer, anybody is allowed to say you all, although down here it's ya'll. Practice! You'll get the hang of it! I just learned that a true Southerner only uses ya'll for 2 people. More than 2 is "all ya'll." Which I've certainly heard, and probably said a lot as well. I just never was aware of it before! Learn something new everyday, if you look and listen.
Anyhoo, glad to meet all ya'll!
Judith
My mom didn't do the down the list thing, but my dad still does. And there's 9 of us! I'm #5 so wasn't in the worst position!!
I am from Atlanta. We say y'all for any number over 1, UNLESS the group can be subdivided OR there are parties missing OR (sometimes) not all parties are in hearing range (subset of condition 2, parties missing.)
As in: "Y'all come out Saturday, we're having a cook-out." This means the entire group we are addressing, even if its 20 - 30 people.
"All y'all come out Saturday, we're having a cook-out." This means the entire group we are addressing, and bring your families too! OR the entire group we are addressing, and bring the rest of your group (Sunday School class? Knitting club? whatever) too! This would be because some of the people are missing, or not in hearing range.
I might say, "I like y'all" which would mean the people on this thread I've discussed things with. But if I say "I like all y'all" I mean everyone on Dave's Garden.
BTW, as far as I can tell, I like all y'all.
Well, thanks Y'all for the update on language, I'll be sure to use it with abandon! My mom had the same name problem with the three of us, although she usually ran them all together assuming that in the rotation she'd hit the guilty party. My sis and I, naturally, blamed everything on little brother, which may account for his grumpy nature.
And, ummmmm, the kitties aren't sleek enough, I've had to put them on the lowcal Science Diet, in the interests of self preservation. Those middle of the night leaps onto our bed can be traumatic, depending on the landing zone. Oooofff!!
There's only four on the pillow, here's the missing Princess, who keeps the rest of them busy. Even being less than half size, she doesn't hesitate to engage in chase and attack games but she does run to me for shelter if they get too annoyed.
Have a great day all y'all, sun's shining here, I might do a little garden cleanup and add to the mulch heap.
Have I posted on these threads yet?
After reading all your cute names I feel kind of depressing now. :O
Look up the history on tsavo africa. Crimson just seemed to suite.
Doreen?
Doria?
lol- :P
My dad's cousin brought one of those home from Germany in '59 or '60. My dad and my uncles had great fun lifting it up and down from the street to the sidewalk and back at family gatherings. I don't know if she ever named it.
Bump for the newer folks!
It's what my husband calls me. My name is Julie.
