Welcome Jen! I too read a whole lot, but live in a very "square" part of the country :)
I told people when I first started here that I chose my name out of my odd sense of humor, I love lupines, can't grow them worth anything. Baa and Philomel pointed out that lupin is spelled without the e in UK, both spellings are used in US, but since I love lupines, can't grow them, I chose this spelling as a way to say that I 'pine' for them: lu-pine-lover :)
I hadn't seen this before, but I love this thread, Gardenwife. I was always curious about people choosing their names.

How did you pick your DG name? Part 3
Mystic's the one to be credited for starting it, I just started a new thread when the last one got too big! :)
Welcome to DG, Bohemian_Books. Love your username!
Really glad this got brought back up to the top since we have gone past the 50,000 mark.
I guess mine started back in the early 80s,down in the Delta, had a job on a catfish farm,I was ridding a greenhouse of fireants,it was full of cacti and ants,I had to be fully covered head to toe, dash in grab a plant and run outside, grab a hose an blast the ants off both myself an plants,Then remove the plants from the pots, clean roots of an repot.
Some of the plants were in very bad shape,so after nursing them back to health, the name came from fellow workers on the farm.
this was also the first time that I saw a big EE,I was hooked on tropicals, the name has been around since.
Great thread!

How delightful, I do like to read how people come up with their screen names!
Mine has been with me since my first instant messaging account in '98. Sometimes I put that year behind it (rubystar98) if rubystar is taken, but usually the plain ol' name is mine, and I use it for pretty much anywhere I need a visible username. I can't even remember how I originally chose that, except that it felt sassy and fun, which is how I usually feel too.
My real name is Monica
: )
Mystic, I'm glad you resurrected this thread. I had never seen it. Very interesting to see why people chose their names. When I joined i didn't realize how important the name was, So I just used my Mother's name rutholive. I told my daughter as soon as she decided on a name for DG i would sign her up . That was a month ago, I sent her a short list of some of your names so she could see what youall' were using. Of course she was sick for a week and din't feel like even thinking. Anyway my real name is Donna
For me it gets too confusing having different names and passwords for all kinds of sites. I tried junebug for DG; seemed light and airy and sort of summery which suited gardening I thought. (About now I would have been picking something weighty and intense - just finished some major yard projects which have worn down my sense of whimsy) Anyway junebug was already taken so jagonjune which is the name of my youngest horse just jumped to mind. (Her father is Jaguar and she was born on the first of June). My real name is Lynn.
well, Dgers gave me mine....
guess it was all the mischeif i got upto......
hahaha
think it kinda fits tho...
I had mine even while I still lived in Florida...so it is for the love of "going"...it fits even more so now that I have moved to Arizona and have plenty of real Roadrunners in my yard each day.
I think that Mitjo is so cool name, that`s why I chose it....LOL.
That`s my real name, that is why I picked it.
My User name is the same just about everywhere I needed one. Most people think it is a Wild and Crazy guy...NOT!
I chose my user name becase I live in Washington State
I love all things Wild, Flowers, Animals, Nature etc. (Yes, I have been know to get wild on occaision too)
And I am just 1 person of many millions in the world.
Pretty simple once explained...Hope this will give you a better picture of the WaWild1...HEE HEE
What a great thread! I took the time to read the post in Part 1 & 2 as well as this one. I got a kick out of some of them, it almost makes it seem as if I know you all. Mine is pretty boring, I live in Alabama and I am Sharon. I am also known as Spiderflower on some sites ( Not that I go anywhere else much anymore!)Don't know why I didnt use that one here. Thanks for starting this thread :-)
Well, Portulaca is one of my favorite little plants and I always have them growing everywhere. In my neck of the wood they're known as MossRose, and when I chose a name for my greenhouse and nursery business MossRose seemed the most logical, and logically I could choose no other suitable name for myself on DG.
Chose my name for the obvious reason. I love flowers and poppies in particular. And when I saw there was a blue poppy that was it...Had to be my new name.....
This thread has been so much fun to read! Loved seeing how everyone came up with their names.
My real name is Julianna, but I've always been called Julie. Growing up, I always envied all my friends for having neat nicknames. I never had one, nor did anyone ever give me one. But eventually, when I was 35, friends started calling me 'Jules'. Nothing original, but I was somewhat tickled about it anyways.
Then one day, a bunch of friends and I were all at a restaurant, waiting to be seated, having a few drinks at the outside bar with a live band. They played a song by "Jewel", and we sang along. (That must have been after the second Margueritas ... lol) A young girl (8-10yrs?) came up to me and asked me if I was the singer 'Jewel'. She even asked for my autograph ... LOL. Anyways, after that I was honored with another nickname ... Jewel.
So ... that's how the name jules_jewel came about. :D
Psilo is short for Psilostemon which is my favourite hardy geranium. Unfortunatly, when I came to register psilos seeds I also found the word psilo had links with halluciangenic drugs and mushrooms!! Not very beneficial to a site that also sells opium poppies!!!! :)
Hi all, though I seldom post I check in daily to see what my favorite forums are up to and tonight I decided to just soak up DG for a while and I found this thread.
It may sound sappy, but my friends at church turned "Joy" into Joyous because they said that I always seemed full of joy and yes, some friends call me "Joyful" so I answer to all three names plus some! But how else can you feel but joyous when you are out in you flowers putting around. I was tickled when my name wasn't taken and use it when ever I can on line. I have really enjoyed reading about everyones names makes us seem like family.
Always stumped at trying to choose a handle, I first came here with seeds of the wild tiger lily, lilium columbianum to offer in trade. ;-)
Julie
ahh it's my name. not flashy but it works. and i answer to it. unless my grandmother is talking to me then i answer to anything
credon- my grandfather
leland- my father
doug- my little bother(yes i spelled it right) and not so little any more
brian - my bf
annd finaly "ooh you know who you are" usualy after she has gone threw all of them but troy
Lol Troy I know the feeling my MIL calls me all my SIL's names and x SIL's names and my nieces and her grandchildren. Heck I get confused sometimes what my name is around her. It's funny sometime she will say Heather ( which is my daughter) and both of us look. She gets mad at us for that. Heck we don't know who she means. lol
Troy, I would say the same thing, (Oh, you know who you are) after saying half their names. They didn't like it, especially if we were out in public.
LOL! Oh my gosh, I'm in the same boat -- I was "Angela, Jessica, which one are you??? Monica!" And it drove me crazy! But you know what's bad? I do it to my own kids now!!!!!!
We mothers just have too much on our minds! (yeah, that's it, lol)
I had a very special friend that gave me the nickname "Terry-from-Kentucky." Mark died three years ago unexpectedly. I shortened the nickname to tcfromky and use it for all things name related. Thanks Mark for the neat nickname!
Hubby is Leonard and I am Joann, hence Lenjo, nothing very clever. He is my everything so I took his name and tacked it onto mine.
Don't know how I managed to miss this thread! It's a great one!! Thanks for keeping it alive!!!
Well, Shirley is my given name. If you see a picture of me or I get a chance to meet other DG'ers, you would definitely know that I was named for that adoreable movie screen star from the 1950's. I have always had the same naturally blond curly hair as did my namesake, Shirley Temple. I also added the number "1", as well as "md", since I'm the first Shirley in MD to sign up at DG. Some folks thought that "md" stood for doctor, sorry to disappoint any one!
Ah, and mine is quite simple also. Two of my favorite things, violas and birds. Birdwatching that is. Ya don't have to spell it all out tho, just say Hi to Vi! (Good thing it was before my love of columbine started, that really would be a mouthful!)
Edited to add that I love my DG name--it IS who I am!

Three years ago we reactivated the local Sierra Club group to take on local environmental issues and try to protect and preserve what we have here in Northern Michigan, and I have been the chairperson ever since. My son, Christopher, who is 13, started calling me "the Sierra Woman"....so that seemed like a good one for me. My birth name is Monica.
Well...I love trees.
Mike
Oops...forgot to add a (c:
Mike
My name is Ginger and the last name starts with H hence Ginger_H. If I had it to do again I would probably be Brindle in honor of one of my beloved Greyhounds. sniffle On the subject of calling ones kids by the other kids names..been there done that, but even worse I have been known to call them by the names of my dogs!! Now that's really bad. LOL
I have enjoy reading all 3. ok i guess its my time.i once lived on the river and they got to calling me the riverrat. the 2 came because there where all ready 2 on here, all though i have not see them. i guess i could have used my real name Nina, cause there not to many of us with that name out there.
nina
My moniker has nothing to do with growing the fruit. It's part of my last name. My real name's DEBORAH but always called DEBBIE my whole life. Pretty dull, huh?
Love this thread! I wonder if all the previous posters are still watching it?
Like some others have said, I was trying to use one name that I could remember for several different sites. Being a little wary of giving up too much information... I just thought of my favorite rose, a Maggie, which I call Maggiemoo. (Much to the horror of my son, yes, I have actually named my plant. Hey, how else will she know when I'm talking to her, specifically?)
My real name is Mary, and to confuse things, I've been called Buffy from the day I was born. Nice to meet all you folks!
Hi everyone. I chose Prudence because it's not a common name and because I wanted to call my daughter by that name. My other half wasn't keen. We called my daughter Cassandra Ruby Tuesday in the end. My real name is Sue.
Fun to read through this thread again as I get to know people better. Mine is boring - had to find a user name, and went with my first initial and last name - something I do on other sites because it's easy to remember. I thought of changing it at one point, but it's also helpful for folks to know who I am when receiving an email.
here is the question of the day....
DORI__________________________?
Inquiring minds want to know.
maybe this has been since answered, now I'm eager to know!
since I am a brick short of a load most of the time I just used my name. I guess it has to do with being computer chalanged and some one asking me what to use for a name . I probably would have used Headweeder but way to many letters to strike.
Weez I don't think you have lung problems its just wheez is easier for me to navigate just like shoe is you know who, and Bad is guess who?,I hope no one is offended maybe I better try to stop that habit but those real long names that are sometimes not made up of logical{ if I follow any logic} strings of letters are hard for me to remember and I continualy botch them . Those screen names are perfectly logical to the creator but some times us dull guys stumble over them. Ernie
Ernie - anything over a certain number of letters is bound to be abbreviated. We're that way - no one should take offense.
:)
whats the question?
Dori pori pudding pie!!!
Nutcase - what is Dori short for....I read the whole dang thread, hoping I'd find the answer.... :)
