Best/Worst - 2024 Round Robin

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Edited to add - This is a 16" center Finished Size requirement for the Round Robin!!

This thread is for those in the "Best/Worst What did I learn today" chat thread who are doing a quilting Round Robin in 2024.
Post your pictures, questions & comments here.
We will follow the progress of each quilt, and when it's been sent to the next person on the list.
So we have Betty, Pat, Linda Kay, Misty, Sharon & myself. This is a total of 6 and we now have enough to do this Round Robin.

Here are the instructions:
Everyone will do a 16" center to begin with - this will be the Finished Size

1st round-start with an unfinished center-everyone sends theirs to the next person on the list
2nd round -everyone adds a 2" border to the quilt they are sent. Send to next person on list.
3rd round - everyone adds a 3" border and sends to the next person
4th round - everyone adds a 4" border
5th round - everyone adds a 5" border
6th round - everyone adds a 4" border and then sends back to the next person on the list who will actually be the maker of the center (the owner).
All of Sharon's rounds will go to Betty's address.

As you finish a round, the next person on the list will always be consistent; you'll be sending each quilt to the same person. So by the time you finally get to the last round, you'll have worked on the quilt that belongs to the person you've sent to all along.
Each round can be appliquéd, pieced, plain fabric or embroidered if you wish. It's up to you to decide what you can do and what you think goes well with the theme of the quilt.

I will edit the first post as we need to. Feel free to comment, and once you've decided on a center, tell us the theme of it and we can start pulling out our material in advance. When you've finished your center, post a picture of it.

ORDER OF SENDING CENTERS (hope this is "clear as mud" lol )
Susan sends her center to Betty (Sharon)
Betty (Sharon) put 2" & 3" borders on. Betty, sends to Linda Kay
Linda Kay (Misty) - put on 4" & 5" borders & sends to Pat
Pat puts a 4" border on
Pat then returns the center to Susan

Betty's center - Sharon put a 2" border on, then send to Linda Kay.
Linda Kay & Misty put 3" & 4" borders on, then send to Pat.
Pat puts 5" border on and sends to Susan.
Susan puts a 4" border on, and returns Betty's center to her

Sharon (Betty) sends her center to Linda Kay (Misty) who'll put a 2" and 3" borders on & send to Pat.
Pat will put a 4" border on, and send to Susan
Susan will put a 5" border on, and send it to Betty.
Betty will put a 4" border on, and it's returned to Misty.

Linda Kay's center sent to Misty
Misty puts a 2" border on & sends it to Pat
Pat will put a 3" border on, and send it to Susan
Susan will put a 4" border on, and send to Betty
Betty & Sharon will will put a 5" & 4" border on, and return Linda Kay's center to her

Pat's center will go to Susan to put a 2" border on.
Susan will send to Betty (Sharon) to put a 3" & 4" borders on.
Betty (Sharon) will send to Linda Kay (Misty) for 5" & 4" borders
Linda Kay (Misty) will return Pat's center to her.

Edited to add - this is for a 16" finished center!

Looking forward to it!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Here's the God's Eye that I'm making. I don't have the black butterfly material anymore, so it will be a slightly different one, but still basically black around the outside. The blue is more turquoise, and creamy yellow, too. It will be interesting to see what people add to it! When I finish the actual block, I'll post a picture.

Thank for the thread. I will have to decide what my center will be.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Linda Kay, she'd be more than welcome. I think we should keep it to 6 people total, otherwise it will take longer to get to everyone in the group.
Speaking of which we need to decide how long each person will have to add their border before sending it on
I know that it sometimes takes awhile to go through borders between Canada and US.
In Canada, the post office (on the 1st Tuesday of some months, not every month) will give free shipping if you set up a business account. You just need an email address. I'm going to set one up to send to Betty.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

WOW, wouldn't that be cool! Free shipping. Good luck Susan.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

apparently I'm also able to send to the US, too - free shipping. It's not a regular thing, so if it is offered in January for instance, I may have already shipped in November. There is no rhyme or reason for when they offer it.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

LOL, that is crazy Susan!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Updated the list of joiners

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Sounds good, give a date, and list of names, in order that we send to.

Everyone send me your address in a message please.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Ok,

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I lost track of this thread because no one's been posting.

I found out today that I only get free shipping to Canada (every Tues in Oct), and 5%off shipping to the US.
I'll make sure to have my center block ready to send to Betty. Betty - found your address, so I guess I'll send to you?!?!

If I get this right, one person will do all borders on each of our blocks, so last person getting blocks has to use most of the fabric

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

That was Pat's suggestion - one person do one of each width of border, but then that means one person is responsible for all of one quilt. The way I've taken part before is what I would put (for instance) a 2" border on each person's center, person 2 would do 3" border on each person's center, and person 3 would do a 4" border on each person's center, etc.
I realize this means person 1 doesn't have to use much fabric, while the second last person on the list would use the most (5" border).
Pat's suggestion would have each of us using the same amount of fabric which sounds fair, but then each of us would only have one center to work on, and it wouldn't be a "Round Robin" because it wouldn't go "around" to everyone, just stay with one person.
Ideas or suggestions???

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Why don't we send them to each other like a clock rotation. Susan send to Betty, 2 different border put on there, Betty, can send to me, and I to pat. Pat can send to you, and keep the rotation going, till they are all back home. That way we all put on different borders. I don't know how to keep one person from doing the same size border, since Misty and I, as well as Betty and Sharon will be mailing together.
Maybe we can mail it separate and in different direction?
I am open for suggestions.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

To be fair to those who want to vote either way, I will keep to what I said about the rotation, in my first (edited) post and we'll make a final decision on Thursday the 19th.

Linda Kay - I think the list you posted about who sends in which order, would work well.

Tell me something - would you rather do a block swap, instead of a Round Robin?
I'm ok with either. If we did a swap, it would be more stash busting, and we'd have more join us - maybe have 4 more, to a total of 10?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I wouldn't mind doing a block swap, but where are we going to find 10 ladies? If we do blocks, maybe we could each do 2 or three in the colors each wanted? That would make a decent throw size?
I think last block swap we each picked the block and colors we wanted?

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

I did not see Linda's suggestion about the order,

Each person sends their center to the next person on the list.
1st person puts a 2 inch border on and sends it on.
The person #1 sent to (person #2) adds a 3 inch border to that center and moves it on.
Person #2 now forwards it to #3 who adds 4 inch border and moves it on to #4.etc. After the last person gets their border on, it gets returned to the original creator.

I would be happy to organize a block swap after this Round Robin is done. I have generally organized it such a in a manner that each person picked ONLY their colors but the creator choice the block pattern. That was done so newbies could create within the sewing ability. I think it would not be difficult to get 10, we each reach out to someone who lives in our hometown or former swap members. I would strongly prefer 12 inch blocks. If it's ok with everyone, I'll set this up later, AFTER the swap, UNLESS you WANT to incorporate that WITH the RR to save postage.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I found a God's Eye pattern for a 12" block and I don't mind using it as a center. I thought it only came in a 20" block, so I'm happy to have found this one. It comes in 16", 12" or 8" sizes on this pattern.
Incorporating the two types would be nice. So, it would be one center with 6, and a swap with 10 people. Using the 12" block with 10 people would give us a nice size of lap quilt. The RR, if you added to it as I've done in the past, would make a nice bed quilt size (used one as a shower curtain).
I can think of one person (neighbour & friend) that would join us in a swap. She's a beginner quilter. If not her, I have other friends who'd love to join. Also, I hadn't asked Thunder if she wanted to join.

So, 12" center for the RR, and 10 of the 12" blocks for the block swap. What does everyone want to do - both together, or one at a time, or choose one or the other?
Time to vote lol If you only want to do the block swap, Pat could organize that.
If we're sending 9 blocks (one to keep for our own quilt), for 6 people it could be sent with the Center, but for 4 it would have to be sent separately as they're not "in" the RR.
I would then make 11 centers of the same, or 1 God's Eye & another type (10) for the swap.
I don't mind doing them together..

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I would suggest keeping the block swap separate, with others outside DG, it might get confusing.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Updated the 1st post to add the order of sending for the Round Robin.
We haven't talked about how long to keep a block before sending it on.
Suggestions?
I'm able to ship to Canada for free, every Tues in Oct. Of course there will be other opportunities to ship for free, just don't know which months yet.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Is 2 weeks long enough?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I'm thinking that a 12" block for a single center seems to be a bit small. If this were a swap, then that's the perfect size. My thought is that a center should be the most prominent part and stand out. Now, maybe not 20", but 15" and larger? I'm going to suggest a 17" block.
We need to have the same size, though.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I think the center could be a large block or a panel. Just depends on what we want for the center. 2 weeks should be plenty time to get your borders on.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

yes, exactly my ;thought, Linda Kay - the larger center would be more prominent. The last time I did this I did a panel. It was a rectangle 15 1/2 x 24 1/2. This was my butterfly center.

How about a 16" finished size center? I have the pattern for a 16" God's Eye..

I agree - 2 weeks is sufficient.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Tried to erase but no can do

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

When do we start mailing out?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

ok Betty, Pat is going to do a block swap after this.
In the meantime, make a 16 1/2" center (which will become a 16" finished center) for this, and give it on to the next person (Sharon) who will add her 2" border, and send it on to Linda Kay (as it shows in the list below)

Betty - you just have to look to see what the last border was, to see what you'll be adding, for yours & Sharon's border. If you see a 3" border, you'll add a 4" border, etc.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

When will we be starting?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I have my center cut out, but need to get a new sewing machine (mine's broken) to piece the God's Eye, then I'll send it next week to Betty & Sharon to put the 1st two borders on (2" & 3").

The rounds include adding borders of various sizes: a 2" border in the first round, a 3" in the second, a 4" in the third, a 5" in the fourth, and finishing with a 4" border before returning to the original maker. Feel free to share pictures, questions, and themes for your centers as we get started!

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Hello ehsanbinwilism, I don't think we have met?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

ehsanbinwilism isn't someone I know.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

They are brand new to DG. Just signed up on the 23rd.
Don't know why they copied and pasted your post Susan.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Hurray, I finally figured out how to load the bobbin in my new-to-me Kenmore 14 sewing machine lol It's a bottom-loading one, and it's been a LONG time since I've used one of these. It's portable, heavy metal, with a handle. BUT I'm sure it will last longer than the plastic Brother machines! Only cost me $65 at the local thrift shop. Tonight I'll piece the God's Eye & send it to Betty with the next free shipping (Tues, I believe). The Post Office is closed for Reconciliation Day on Monday. The 1st is a Tuesday, so this will be good :)

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I had to manually wind my bobbin. There's no bobbin spindle on this machine...?!?!?!

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

You might look to buy a bobbin winder.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Please don't send me your centers yet - I'm returning this sewing machine (I have a 15 day return policy). I can't work with it at all. It jams, and I can't get the tension right either.
I'm going to see about getting another one this week.
