Status of fixes and to-dos as of January 15

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Hi Terry ~
Something strange just happened after I posted my previous post. Skip To New is suddenly taking me to an empty page with the page numbers 1-5 at the top of the page, but no posts underneath, just the space to write a post.

I'll try rebooting to make sure it's not my computer going wonky.

Edited: Okay, never mind. This time it worked and I didn't reboot. Maybe my pixels got all mixed up while I was trying to "beam up" a message to DG. :o)

Seeing your last post at the top of page 6, nuts, I wonder if the Skip to New did that because your post was the last of page 5.

It's very possible that's what happened, Chilly. But don't you think it sounds much less exciting than "my pixels were scattered all over the universe when I 'beamed' up to DG?" :o)

Zen_Man ~ Please don't misunderstand my intent. The point I was making is that it's easy to do. I never said it was acceptable or right. ... All I said is we need to accept that it happens and make our choices based on that while being as careful as we can be or choose to be.

Google was just an example I used because it was mentioned in several previous posts. I wasn't implying it's specifically Google. It can be someone outside of Google joining DG and then posting to Google...
Hi nutsaboutnature,

I agree with you. There may be nothing to prove that Google was guilty of any wrongdoing by posting or linking pictures that were originally from Dave's Garden. But somebody somewhere along the line was guilty of copyright infringement. Unfortunately we have all become so accustomed to such Internet infringements that we are desensitized.

I keep large master copies of the photos that I post, in Nikon's RAW format (NEF), so that if I ever need to prove ownership, I can. Only I have possession of those large versions.

When I clicked on skip to new it took me to pg 6 but there were posts on page 5 I hadn't seen. Glad I checked but I wonder what's wrong with the skip to new?

Now I have two "bitter clingers" (threads I'm watching, have looked at, but then won't drop off the home page listed of updated threads):

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1405192/

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

I "unwatched" both of these threads, and they now don't show up on my home page.

I've rewatched the ones I'd like to monitor, and taking a look and returning doesn't cause them to stick.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Sometimes has to be done 3x- unwatch to watch. Not sure, but usually something else is being done in the fixing dept. Skip to New is probably going to last Post Made- not last Post You looked at.

Terry, I clicked watch on two threads this morning and neither one showed up in my watched threads.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Will they show up if nobody has posted anything since you last viewed the thread? I know they wouldn't before all these wonderous "improvements".

No they shouldn't show up if there are no new posts but both threads had new posts.

If photos are posted in PlantFiles, Google has the ability to index them. If they are ONLY posted in a subscribers-only forum, where non-subscribers cannot enlarge them, then I'm not sure how Google would index them, but I can ask. I'll need some examples to research and create a ticket for the techs to work from.

...Issue number 2: I tried typing that on the thread, "Changes to the Forums" when I discovered another problem. There was the standard Post a Reply to this Thread, but when I clicked on the Preview Post button, it took me to a page that said, "This thread has been locked for replies." I see no indication that this was the case.
I reported the same problem earlier in this message thread. Not identifying Locked threads as "Locked" is clearly a bug.

Obviously they should not dangle a Message Entry box in front of you in a Locked thread. They should also label as "Locked" the Thread Titles in the Thread List pages. There should also be a "floating" LOCKED THREAD label that sits above the "floating" BACK TO TOP button.

Terry, are you seeing this message? This problem needs to be added to the "To Do" list.

Well, to be honest, this is not a change from how we've always handled "locked" threads (which are different from a thread "closed" by a member, such as in the trading or ID forums...in those cases, the thread does get "CLOSED" added to its title, even though any member can continue to post to it.

Threads locked by an administrator only show as such if you attempt to post to it. I agree it's somewhat counterintuitive and we can ask the techs to change it, but it's not a bug.

My particular question about photos was just that; a question and not meant to add fuel to the fire. I am particularly referring to photos only posted on Orchids, a subscriber forum, that appear on Google images. It would be a bit much to back tack but when I run across something I will let you know. In addition, people should be aware that images of themselves, published on subscriber only forums, and under their user name might appear on Google images as well.

Lake Stevens, WA(Zone 8a)

Hmmm, I wanted to mark my thread in Plant ID Forum as "solved", but I can't figure out how to do it.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

This is really odd. I have ONE thread in my thread watcher that is not updating... I've read the most recent post, returned to the home page several times, and it's still on the "watched threads" list as if there's a new post (which there isn't). I've refreshed the page, reloaded the browser, even restarted the computer. Just now I clicked on another thread to catch up on it, and when I returned to the home page it was no longer on the "watched" list (as expected), but this thread from the MAG forum seems stuck there: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1412931/?page=2#post_10195152

Ottawa, KS(Zone 5b)

Hi critterologist,

This comment may not be applicable, but technically a thread is on your "watched threads" list if that is the way you checked it, even though no new replies have occurred there. The question is, when you hit Home, does it show up there?

There have been some issues with watched threads not updating or not going away after they've been read. Some people have had luck by clicking the "watch/unwatch" button several times. Maybe it kind of resets things?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'll try resetting things that way, nuts.. thanks.

And yes I am referring to the "watched threads" list on my home page that shows threads I'm watching that have new posts.. but thanks for clarifying!

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

My views are still inconsistent. Some threads show many responses and no views. Others show a view count that is days old while people are actively posting. I have set and reset.

Good news is that the few symbols I've added to posts are not wiping out the post.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

We have reported the problems with thread behavior, including:
1. lack of accurate "view" count
2. watched/unwatched thread behavior (I think this may be due to a "featured thread" function that isn't working properly - I will be trying to get some clarification on that today)
3. lack of closed/open tools on threads in the trading and ID forums

As soon as we get a status update on the next batch of fixes, I'll start a new thread in this forum and bring everyone up to speed.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks for the update and, again, more birthday wishes coming your way.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Thanks! Let's head here to continue the conversation: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1414587/

As a side note, I've locked this thread, so I'm not trying to play catch-up with two different threads :-).
