Terry? Voting forum graph is misbehaving...

Quote from coleup :
Thanks Terry, maybe it will help.

Wish I could help on the Read More/Read Less. Every thread I read now has this. I'm on Firefox 2.0 and Mac OS 10.4. Yes, really!

There is also an 'unresponsive script' that hangs up every page as it loads.. When I click to cancel it. my page position shifts back to posts predating the last round of changes early Dec and then I scroll down from there.thru ones I have already read to any ;new' I'm not able to identify which script, but it loads near the beginning or end of final 'read Daves garden before new page completes. Don't recall ever having gotten this script to complete by waiting for minutes or overnight.

Do you have Safari? Can you try it and see if you still encounter the same problem? I'm guessing there's a reason you're still on Mac OS 10.4 and haven't upgraded?

I've noticed that the date/time stamp for posts is off. I just posted and went back to check it and it says that I posted it 5hrs ago...

edited to add: Just checked this one and I see that it shows that I posted it 4hrs ago.

This message was edited Dec 30, 2015 11:11 AM

edited to add: ^^^ The edit shows a time that is one hour off of my time.

Hi JuneyBug,

That's a good comment. I hope DG addresses it. That raises the question of time zones. The time stamps should specify what time zone applies, if a "time of day" is specified. That isn't relevant when the time stamp merely states how long ago the message was posted like, for example, "one hour ago.".

I am in the Central Time Zone, myself, if that is ever relevant and, I notice it is relevant in the "message was edited" line at the bottom of this message. The time given there agrees with my time in the Central Standard Time. So, it should say Central Standard Time or CST in my "message was edited" line. It probably should say Eastern Standard Time EST in your message.

I notice that in Terry's top-of-thread message that she lists Date/Time Stamp as "fixed" and, as you have pointed out, that isn't completely true, and should be addressed.

ZM

It looks like your time zone is off by an hour - when I went to your member page, it indicates the time is 5:34 pm, and should be 4:34 pm, yes? That is a setting in your remember preferences - we don't control what time zone you choose.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

I wonder if folks remember to go in and change their time zone when Daylight Savings Time begins and ends. I don't know any web site that can do that automatically for you.

Yes, it is..I will nudge them.

I sometimes forget to change the time on my member page when the time changes in Spring and Autumn. I noticed this autumn, right after we went back to standard time, the times all seemed off by an hour (when the posts were still showing times). That reminded me to go in and change back to Central Standard Time.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

SSGardener: Can you turn your phone horizontally? I have an app for my newspaper and have to do that or I get the same cut off effect you are seeing with the phone vertical.

Dover AFB, DE(Zone 7a)

I didn't get a notice that more posts had been made on this thread, so I had to look it up. That is ridiculous and makes the site pretty unusable. I hope that gets fixed quickly.

I wouldn't have remembered to change my time when Daylight Savings Time began and ended, but that doesn't have anything to do with the Date/Time stamp on my posts.

June, we still have to click on the eye/watch at the top to make sure threads show up for us.

I too have an iPhone 6 and just tested this thread with it, using the standard Safari browser. I can read it vertically or I can flip my phone sideways to read it horizontally. From either orientation, I can use my fingers on the screen to pinch it smaller or expand it to enlarge the text. Bottom line - it seems to work fine for me; I can ask the techs to recheck it, but it may be something in your settings.

Once you posted to the thread, it should have gone on your watched threads list.

Were you checking the "Home" page or the main Forums page for an update? We know there is a lag on the Home page, and it isn't syncing everything, and while they're fixing that, I've encouraged people to use the main Forums page to check for updates.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Terry, even though I comment on the threads I post in, they do not show up with new post unless I click on the watch thread.

If I hold my phone in portrait orientation it won't wrap righ, but if I rotate to landscape style it will wrap and break between words correctly.

I recently tried to post to a thread and it would not take. My posts kept disappearing over and over again.

To try to keep things manageable, here's a new thread so we can keep track of the still remaining issues. Here's what I know has been fixed, and what is outstanding:

Fixed:

Auto thread watcher - if you post to a thread, you *should* be automatically watching that thread, unless you have your preferences set otherwise.

Today, I noticed that threads I post to do not automatically become watched. I had replied to a handful of new ones and they did not show up. I double checked my preferences and the option is marked.

I am trying to remember what I have read earlier. I think Terry mentioned there might be a bit of a lag as to when they are updated on the homepage. ?? I am still finding this page loading very slowly, so do not use it very often.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Ughhh...

1) Terry, this thread didn't get automatically "watched," even though I commented on it. Can the techs turn this back on as the default option instead of having us "watch" each thread that we comment on?

2) It seems like others are also having the word-wrapping issue that I'm having, so it couldn't possibly be an issue with just *my* phone.

The wrapping issue is fixed when I rotate it to landscape format, but I don't read or type on landscape mode. I find it really tiring to read that way. It's not exactly "improved usability on mobile" if you're forced to read on landscape setting.

3) When you "skip to new," it actually skips to the last comment you read previously, not the newest comment. This is not a big issue (and sometimes helpful because you're reminded of the conversation), unless the last comment you read was at the bottom of the page, which means the "new" button doesn't actually take you to the new comment. You have to click on the "next" button to go to the top of the next page see the new comment. So confusing!

4) The "back to top" button on iPhone 6 Plus Safari is not showing up. I think it used to show up, but now it's a blank circle (square?). It still scrolls to the top when you click on it, though.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

You should see "unwatch" if you are watching the thread. Like FB used to be eons ago....very confusing. I think all my threads are updating but I'm not sure. Some are but some may not be.

I have a little square that works to go back to top arrow is iffy. iPad safari.

I rarely use the Forums page, only if i need to go to a forum that I do not "watch" - one of my Favorites.

I do not like the additional threads at the top, I go to the Forums page to find Forums, not Unread threads or recent threads.

I am also finding I am spending less and less time on DG, used to be hours a day. now i'm down to really 1 thread I spend time on, i'm just finding it's not "fun" like it used to be and much more tedious. This is one "change" I am not getting used to, not liking all the "issues" that are continuing.

I'm hoping things level off, and issues corrected - I've got about 4 months til i have to renew. Hopefully no more major upgrades....

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

On your homepage the forums may not show updates but if you click on the forum name it will take you to the forum. This way is much faster.

I'm finding my way around but I'm really surprised that much more testing wasn't done before this was put online...it makes DG look stupid..not a great way to get new subscribers or keep old.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

I just noticed at the very top of this thread (and, apparently, other threads too) are 5 white boxes (top right). There's nothing to indicate what they're for so one-by-one I clicked on them. Most were for things like Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest (which I don't use), but one was for Bookmarking.

What happened to our Bookmark icon? And for people that do use Facebook, etc., where are those icons?

I assume it's just a glitch that the techs are aware of, but I thought I should mention it.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Nutsaboutnature, the icons are missing on my laptop as well as my phone.

On my phone, they show up as white squares. On my laptop, there are colored squares inside white squares.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

The up arrow is simply a snowy dot on my phone, has been for 2 days, haven't looked to see if other things are missing their markings for the spot they hold.. yeah the bookmark, quote, edits are half missing but working. Definitely something thats just going to take awhile to get fixed..

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Ssgardener ~ glad to know the missing icons aren't only on my computer. I use a desktop so it's not just smaller devices.

As others have mentioned, I also prefer just the list of DG forums on the forums page. I can find updated forums by looking at the forums list and my personal list of watched forums and threads is on my home page.

For me the other forums and threads on the top of the forums page is just excess that I scroll right by.

The forums page is still loading slow for me too.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

I do not find this an improvement for iphone or ipad. I have the same problem someone mentioned above. I have an iphone6 plus and it wraps the words in a very awkward and hard to read way. I also prefer to use my phone in portrait mode and have it locked in that mode. I can't see any improvement at all. In fact it is a step back. Rather than using my iphone I wait until I am at home and use my latop to check my threads and post. It requires many more clicks than in the past to post and the find threads you are following. I don't like all the extra stuff at the top. I am still concerned about the privacy of the threads. Can non subscribers read the member only threads??????

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't think DG could have improved what we were accustomed to for so long. I don't believe the dragon would have survived much longer and given its best to us. None of the cellphones view the same places alike. I expect a bit more time for the changes to settle and become repaired- some of these issues happening now many of us have already seen in pAst years. I also have preferences in the devices I use, for many different reasons, and will be glad when the holidays are over for work to progress.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

> I expect a bit more time for the changes to settle and become repaired-

Kittriana, I could not disagree more. It is ridiculous for a website of this size -- and a website that charges a fee! -- to use ALL of its members as its beta testers, instead of doing the beta testing behind the scenes to work out the kinks, and only then rolling out he changes.

This is an incredibly poorly done site update, no matter what kind of metric you use.

I visit other gardening websites on my phone and I've never had such issues viewing the pages on my phone.

And this is their second update in two years, and *the exact same thing happened* the last time, with a horrible initial update which literally took months to fix. How is this acceptable?

At the last poorly done update, we were told the techs were located in India. If that's the case, they haven't been on vacation at all. But no matter where the techs are located, the corrections should have been made *before* rolling them out to the masses.

Frisco, TX(Zone 8a)

We are talking about updating the website where I work. I am making note of all these issues to discuss with my tech gurus so the same thing doesn't happen to us. It's hard to believe there are this many problems with this update.

Bedford, VA(Zone 7a)

I went through the previous pages but didn't see any comments about an issue I have been having -has anyone else lost their "home" icon, at the top of the page next to "Guides and Information" when they are in a forum thread?

The Daves Garden logo itself is a Home link - has always been, by the way, Sometimes things are still there, but like ghost ink, you can't see them, chuckl. Yes, but now I have a little man who has a drop down bar with a lot more options on the top right screen. I expect the Home forums page will become new as well at anytime...

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Sorry guys - I was out of town over New Year's and I'm catching up.

Here's what I've noted from the posts made since I last posted:

1. The icons at the top (the ones for social media and bookmarking) have gone AWOL and the up arrow is not working on iPhones.

2. The "Watch thread" function is not working properly, as it requires you to opt-in, instead of adding it to your list when you post to it.

3. Text-wrapping in portrait position on iPhone6 is not wrapping words properly. Any problems from Android or other iOS versions? ZM, did I see you post you're experiencing the same problem with an Android phone?)

4. Skip to new should take you to the first unread post, rather than the last read post.

5. Group blast messages are not working properly.

Anything else new (or just now spotted) that I should add to the list?

I feel I should point out that while there's absolutely nothing wrong with having people in India (or any other country) work on a website, our techs are in California, at Internet Brand's main headquarters. Not sure where that misinformation came from, but it wasn't true two years ago and it isn't true now :-).

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

When we make a post, and then go to top of thread to go back home, the home button is missing.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

I don't think the Home link is missing for everyone. I haven't had any problems with a missing Home link, but I use a desktop pc.
