Monarchs will go as high in the container as they can. It doesn't mean it has to be a tall container though. We used ones only 8 inches. We put in fresh milkweed every day. Also sprinkled a few drops of water just in case. As soon as they go to top and "J" up (they'll be attached by then). no need to put in leaves. Try not to disturb the container after this, they don't like too much jostling.

I am here and so far behind in posting. I have read all of the posts but always get on here to late to put any thought together. So I am sitting on the back patio, sweltering in about 98 degrees and wondering why I am still out here. But to stubborn to go inside.

I have laundry to do and the kitchen to straighten up after fixing Vern and the animals their brunch. Vern always has brunch because he gets up to late for breakfast.

I had a wonderful time in Newport Beach, CA. Not a place to go if you have problems with hills or steps. Whole area is built on cliffs and hills above the ocean and to get to the ocean and beaches you hike down and climb out. By the time I got to the top I knew how out of shape I actually am. I can walk 10 miles on level land. 50 stairs just about did me in.

I went with my daughter and her family and my son's 5 year old joined us. So the grandchildren ranged from 23 to 5. The older grandchildren carried everything to the beach so grandma only had to get herself there.

Vern's daughter did her normal sh**. She decided what I fed the dogs for breakfast and dinner was hogwash and only fed them dry food. And Vern just stood by and let her. She did them no harm but she will never watch my animals again. And all the food I purchased for her father was still in the fridge. I asked about the food and that was when Vern told me about the dogs. Fast food or canned soup seemed to be the menu. And she bought her new boyfriend for the first 3 days and they stayed at a hotel down the way. She was already gone when I got home Saturday evening. I decided to fly home and then took a cab home. She knew I was coming and had already moved to a friend's home and left town the next day. Told her dad she was just to busy to stop by on Sunday to say goodbye. But she did get over $1600 from her Dad because she was broke.

So if I ever do go on another trip, she will not be the house/Vern/animal sitter. And it was her idea.

I think I would love Sauerkraut soup.

I can just about sew a button on if I take my time. Same with baking. I am a good cook but baking is a science and I measure very little.

Karen, cross post. I sent it because I did not want to lose it.

I am getting ready to go inside. Every time Betty says something about mowing her grass, I get tired. I can garden for hours but mowing grass is a thankless task.

I came outside last evening early, around 7pm, and cutback some roses and crinium. The sun is behind the mountains by that time but still plenty of light to work in the garden. Tomorrow I am going to plat some lettuce, spinach and green beans. Winter vegs here. I should get a few good pots of beans before they freeze but the lettuce will grown all winter. I just need to remember I am planting for a few and not an army.

I saw the photo on Facebook and thought of Linda.

My son lives in Spokane and is an Internist. He is being over run with patients with breathing problems because of the smoke from the fires. He says his eyes are burning all of the time. They are actually asking for volunteers to help with the fires. We are getting some of the smoke all the way down here in the furthest southern part of Nevada.

Had sad news when I got back from California. One of my loan officers that worked for me over 15 years died from leukemia. He was in his mid 50s and had been battling it for 3 years. Had a bone marrow transplant and they thought he had licked it. Then all of a sudden he got really sick, they rushed him to Scripps and he died there. He was married to a good friend of mine. She is my age. No fair. Young husband and he dies.

Betty, Roger's Garden in Newport Beach, CA has some beautiful granite slab fountains. If you sold your car you might have enough money to buy one. They are beautiful but I could not believe the prices.

Katie, hope all is well with you.

Susan, there are some pretty sophisticated space heaters manufactured these days. Little pricey but probably cheaper than installing a separate heating unit for downstairs. But the owner should pay for them, not you. You have got yourself in quite a mess and not going to be easy with the landlord living above you.

I cannot believe you guys are getting cooler weather. We are still close to 100 degrees. Should be cooling down in about a week.

Hugs to you all. Sorry I got so far behind. I will try to stay more current.

But one thing good did come from my visit, I looked real good to Vern when I got back. There are many things I do for him, he did not even know about until I was not there to do it.

Oh Marilyn, I want some. I bought some corn in California. $0.65 an ear but it was outstanding.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Wow - WHAT a quilt to make, Karen - easy? yikes........ not for me - looks like 150 to 200 tiny pieces, and this is ONE block?
Sharon - the law says they cannot use portable heaters.

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm thinking I would probably like sauerkraut soup. I like sauerkraut and I like dill pickle soup.

Mmmmm that corn looks wonderful. Our local farm market has the most wonderful corn. I could eat off of their veggies every night..

No Susan it's the whole quilt. I think I'll be OK with it. as long as I don't try to work on it when tired.

Sharon, as lovely as your vacation was bet you are glad to be home, from sounds of it Vern is thrilled to have you back..his daughter sounds like a piece of work! Smiling at the granite piece, nope, too expensive for my blood

Joyce, last time you visited you sold mushrooms for spending $$$.. What kind if stepping stones are you making?

Mouth watering "M" corn is $6.99 doz, still a cheap meal

Sauerkraut soup, hmm never heard of it..no Joyce you don't have to make it while you are here. Lol

Karen, dill pickle soup?i must lead a sheltered life, another I never heard of

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

Dill pickle soup is a Polish dish. We stopped in a favorite restaurant many years ago, first time I heard of it. Server brought me a sample and I was hooked.

(thunder)Wildwood, FL(Zone 9a)

Karen, you could do it. Just like anything else, takes a bit of practice, have to start out with a very simple block, work your way up.

The quilt is for my son Kyle, the Navy guy. Getting married in January. Himself, fiancé, and her son, all love Harry Potter. The blocks are all based on things from the books, and movies. They all also love to read, sew the bookcase, I thought , was a great thing.

Hope Y'all are having sweet dreams, I'm about to join you.

Victoria Harbour, ON

I'm terrible at trying different foods Karen, I'd have passed on trying out..not very adventurous so miss out out on a lot of yummy's.

Couple of quilts that Dianne did were beyond having patience, got to give credit to those who have that patience, one quilt took her a year, not for me but I sure admire those who can do it like Thunder

Wonder what happened to Judy, she was going to tell us all about her travels?? Hope all was well when she got home

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

And, it's morning .. into another week of cooler temps, and, as always .. busy days ..

LARGE Polish community here in TBay ... when we are near one of the chuches on a Wednesday or a Thursday .. we usually stop by for fresh PEROGIES and cabbage rolls .. just too good ..
Must admit though, have never tired sauerfkraut soup .. do buy sauerkraut perogies though ..

Good to see you posting Sharon and Joyce and Jean

DS is coming over this morning sometime .. left his phone charger in my car ..
Must see if there's anything on my 'Hunny Do' list that he can tackle.

Take care

~M~

Waving, to LK, Barb, DIanne, Judy, Bev everyone :-)

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone.

77 here, but it will warm up quickly. Supposed to be 102 today.

Betty, did you get any pictures of those beautiful quilts?

Verona, ON

Waving to everyone.

I don't know where yesterday went. I did a bunch of little things around the house and then it was 6 pm. All week I have mixed up days... every day when I woke up I thought it was the day ahead. Until I check the computer I was convinced it was Sat.

My eyes are all screwy this am and then I usually get a vertigo spell. So am planning to NOT going to Kingston.

Hope to be back later.

Do something nice for yourself ladies.

Good Morning, Dear Friends!

The soup was delish! Yum, yum. I'm thinking I might like the one from the restaurant a little better. The kraut seemed smaller. Maybe the put it in the blender a little or chopped it up a bit. I'll try that next time. I was right. Bill wouldn't try it!

So what a fun wonderful time getting caterpillars! I ended up with 11. Now this morning I've spotted 10 more. Karen, do you think there would be room in there for all of them?

Thumbnail by joycet Thumbnail by joycet Thumbnail by joycet Thumbnail by joycet
Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

I wasn't expecting all the poop they made overnight!!! LOL!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Joyce how long will you have to mother them?

Dianne hope the blurred eyesight isn't a sign of vertigo, how is it this morning..furries will be looking for their morning walk, are they patient when you can't take them?

Lindakay, we walked from bedroom to bedroom then into her sewing room, I was so busy looking that I didn't..I'll drop in another day and do so.

"m" we are alike, there is always a 'to do' project waiting should one of the boys drop in lol

Not doing much this morning..
Did a wash and filling bobbins should I decide to quilt..looking at the piece and not sure how I shall quilt it, have to not rush into it and think of how I want to quilt it. Unusual for me to be so patient.

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

I loved the lake pictures...and the corn picture.mim so sad that we didn't get any corn from the 14 rows I planted. I'll be careful how I use the rest of my frozen from last year!!

Betty, I've never done this before. I don't know how long it will take. I heard that butterflies born here will come back next year. I wonder if that's true.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

This might help.

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

Wow 21 caterpillars? What are the dimensions of the container? They make huge amounts of large poop. Fortunately, it won't be long before they go into change mode. It will take about 10 days for them to transform. You will see the Chrysalis become translucent and will see the butterfly inside, You will know they will soon emerge, It will take a while for them to pump up their wings. I put in a little sugar water or juicy fruit for them and then release them. Te coolest part is they will usually sit on your fingers for a bit before they fly away.

mulege, Mexico

Problems with the a/c and I'm very depressed. Exchanging emails with the seller who is, not surprisingly, blaming me. katie

Victoria Harbour, ON

Sounds like a fun thing to do!
Joyce do you have them in captivity because there are so few that survive in your region or just for the experience.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Sad to hear thatKatie..
Did you not try the a/c before purchasing? With your heat I can understand it's enough to be depressed about.

Cleaning up sewing tables this morning and packaging left over fabric from the quilt top I just made and thought if I did put them away that is where they would stay so been working on strips, easy and relaxing process, think I will have enough for a good size throw, even double

How is your sewing going Karen?

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

It's going Betty, making me crazy, but going.

mulege, Mexico

It's a split a/c, not a plug-in. Katie Needs to be professionally installed.

Kinda neat :-)

I love that quilt.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Talk about nifty "M"
Am sure one of us will be thinking about doing it..especially nice in a memorial quilt.

Katie could that be the problem and not the mother board??maybe you should try electrician and see..more cost though

Finished all my strips, not much fabric left which is good
Was thinking of leaving them out and sewing together from time to time

I visited neighbor Barbara who knew when she saw my face that something bad had happened. We had a good talk and I came home to follow-up. Wrote to Craigslist. Not sure if they will do anything but it's one thing I could do.

Now I'm working on my letter of thanks to the IRS people who helped me. It's also my last hope of getting someone to look at the misbehavior of my retirement association.

Barbara is ten years younger than I with a similar situation. She had dengue fever for three months last year and is still tired a lot. Similar to my situation from the breast cancer. We compare notes and encourage each other to hang in.

As I was leaving, I noticed a flowering vine on a neighbor's fence. It's a Hawiian wood rose, not only blooming but with ripe seeds. I immediately took a few seeds. I have a plant that I grew from seeds but it hardly ever blooms. I'll see how this one does.

hugs, katie

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

Unfortunately buying a used item is buying a pig in a poke. They don't come with a warranty. It might have been running just fine when sold. It would be nice if he gave you at least a partial refund, but he is under no obligation to do so.

mulege, Mexico

The problem is that he told me it would run on 220 and it doesn't. Misrepresenting, even if accidental, is not acceptable.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Katie, I had to Google that plant name. I found it is a member of the morning glory family, they have fuzzy seeds?

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

That is a different case Katie. If it comes down to it, you would have a case in small claims court. You might tell him that, could shake loose a refund.

Victoria Harbour, ON

No recourse here either, Craigslist is 'user beware'
Can only hope that the vendors aren't crooks
With a try tough Katie if it puts your mind at ease.

Going to grab something quick for supper, already cooked just need to heat in micro, hot bath and early night

Gals coming tomorrow so I will have to get up early and tidy up..did sew all day, 1/2 done putting strips together, other 1/2 will have to wait till tomorrow

Plight rain, listening to it I'm sure will act like a lullaby.

If I don't fall asleep there is always iPad games

Sorry to hear about your ac probs, Katie....... buyer beware is so miserable, but often true.... dammit

21 monarchs? wow - will be lovely when they have their "coming out party" :-)

Betty - pretty colours on that quilt! It looks so like the baby quilt I'm making for our DGS Marshall - now, if I can only have room to sew again...... :-(

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

"M", I saw that quilt on Facebook tonight. It belongs to a Georgie Claassen? Someone else shared the picture.

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

A new friend has joined and will be hosting a Snowflake block swap.. Come see.

Morning all,

You have been busy "M". Now both your wallet and Zoey will be pounds lighter!
Costly for the grooming isn't it and you have 3. Yikes, there goes your allowance.

A light rain throughout the night and it's starting up again

Garbage at roadside, had to go to the store for the extra bag tag and while I was there a man was buying bingo tags, been forever since I've played to decided to buy cards, think it's at 8pm tonight..maybe I will just win the $2,500 jackpot..

Gals will be here shortly, won't be long after they leave will be napping

Took a Tylenol 3 when I went to bed last night, eased aches/pains for a bit, woke up at 1:00 and had to take another, of course I was wide awake so decided if I couldn't sleep id get up for a bit,
Finished the quilt top, cleaned the craft room, hot bath then fell into a deep sleep and got up at 7:30

Best I go make the coffee
